The annual event quickly spread throughout the nation as communities held their own memorial gatherings. In 1971, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor soldiers who died during all U.S. conflicts. Unofficially, at least, Memorial Day also represents the first official weekend of summer. And, according to some, it marks the season when it’s OK to wear white pants and shoes again — but only through Labor Day weekend!

Gowanda Harley-Davidson All About Family

By Jeff Martin

It’s difficult to think just about motorcycles when visiting Gowanda Harley-Davidson. Family owned and operated since 1947, Gowanda H-D is every bit a destination

place as are the towering cliffs of Zoar Valley surrounding it. Tim McKeever, marketing manager, said its location is one of its biggest draws. “The destination here is worth the journey,” McKeever said recently from his office. The facility, located at 2535 Gowanda Zoar Rd. has been expanded 14 times. The original space, a barn no bigger than most two-car garages, is still part of the complex and visitors can glimpse history, specifically photographs of its founders, John and Babs (Marilyn) Reid. The business is currently in its second generation of family operation and is in the process of transferring to its third. That’s important to remember, McKeever said, because many dealerships, and businesses in general, aren’t so family oriented. “It really is a big deal to us and to the Gowanda See Gowanda Harley-Davidson page 3

The ECS community voted Tuesday to approve the 2013-14 school budget of $10,891,507 by a vote of 186–50. Voters also approved resolutions to lease two school buses (186–51), and to provide funding to the Ellicottville

Memorial Library (157–80). The election for three new board members resulted in the election of Roger Spell and William (Bill) Murphy to five-year terms beginning July 1, and Leonard (Len) Zlockie to a four-year term to fill out the remainder of the term left

vacated by the resignation of Aimee Kilby. Zlockie was sworn in during the Tuesday evening board meeting and immediately took a seat at the table. Before receiving election results, the board began See ECS School Budget page 6

Mansfield’s Work on Westmont Ridge, Highway Barn Continues

The new development at HoliMont’s Westmont Ridge and the new highway barn were the primary topics of discussion at the Monday, May 20, 2013, meeting of the Town of Mansfield’s board of directors. The first 700 feet of roadway

into Westmont Ridge from Route 242 is owned by the Town of Mansfield (the rest is owned by HoliMont). The road, newly named Ridgeway Road, starts out on an uphill grade and then drops to a fairly steep downhill. HoliMont has volunteered to have Northrup Construction’s subcontractor,

Coldsprings Construction, establish a sub-grade for that section as it works on the rest of the roadway. Mansfield’s Highway Department will take over completion of the road in stages as appropriate after that has been completed. Mansfield Supervisor Bob See Mansfield Board page 4

Relay For Life Returns

Ellicottville Comes Together to Take a Stand Against Cancer

If you have driven through the villages of Ellicottville or Little Valley lately, you have probably noticed large purple ribbons tied to tree trunks and telephone poles.
