MARCH 29 - APRIL 4, 2013

WNY One of the Most Beautiful Places on Earth for Fishing Trout and Steelhead Season Opens April 1 Fishing: The activity of trying to catch fish. Techniques include hand gathering (better be really quick), spearing, netting, trapping and angling. It’s an ancient practice dating back more than 40,000 years from man’s days as a huntergatherer, where fishing was a major source for providing food, to today’s mode of fishing as a way to relax or provide sport. Western New York provides some of the nation’s best fishing for trout, steelhead, bass, pan fish, bluegills and other freshwater fish. Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties alone offer 34 stocked trout streams, 18 more wild trout streams, and 14 lakes and ponds, all open to the public, and all within 30-45 minutes driving time from Ellicottville. Maps of these locations are available free and online from the Department of Environmental Conservation. An annual fishing license can be purchased by anyone, 16 years old and older, for $29. Best WNY steelhead fishing runs from March through May, each spring. Streams are full of fresh fish and ones that have completed spawning and are dropping back to the lake where they’ll spend the summer. These fish are hungry, very aggressive and are excellent fighters. They’re not only great fun to catch but are found in some of the most beautiful places on earth. In stocked streams, most bridges receive trout yearlings at every stocking, usually once or twice per year in the spring.

tournament after winning the State competition at Binghamton University on March 23. They’ll be traveling to Michigan State University in East Lansing to compete with 800 teams from around the world from May 22-25. The ECS team, composed of seniors Eric Oliverio and Patrick Snyder and juniors Izzy Brown, McKenzie Robinson, Emily Timkey and Chris Wojtowicz, was coached by Caitlyn Keller and assistant coach Megan Westfall, another junior. They will reprise the humorous performance they created that addressed a problem called “It’s How You Look at It.” Teams were instructed to show how a character acts “normally” in his/her own environment, but “oddly” in another character’s setting, and Ellicottville Team Members: Emily Timkey, Mckenzie vice versa. The performance had to include a scene change and a “meter” that indicates the Robinson, Christopher Wojtowicz, Patrick Snyder,

Public Meeting Held on HoliMont Sidewalk Project By Jann Wiswall

HoliMont hosted a public meeting for area residents on Friday, March 22, to learn more about the new sidewalk that will be installed along Rte. 242 from HoliMont into the Village of Ellicottville. The long-awaited project, which was originally proposed by HoliMont, the Town

and Village of Ellicottville, and others as far back as 2006, is scheduled for completion by the State Department of Transportation (DOT) by summer 2014. As outlined at Friday’s meeting, the project already has begun, with plans and renderings available for people to review and ask questions about. Once drawings and plans are finalized, DOT will begin the time-consuming process of acquiring land that falls into the category of “eminent domain” with owners of property along the sidewalk route. About 25 property owners will be monetarily compensated for the land that is “required for public improvement” by the State. The appraisal process for that land is underway, noted DOT representative Ken Kuminski, and negotiations will be held privately with each property owner. The DOT expects to have the acquisition process completed by January 2014.

With almost three feet of natural snowfall over the last two weeks and more on the way, Holiday Valley’s President Dennis Eshbaugh announced Tuesday that the resort will extend its season for an extra week, through April 14. “Not only do we have a deep base with wall-to-wall coverage, but the snow surface itself is in ideal mid-winter, packed-powder condition. We are happy to add a week to this already great season.”

As of mid-week, the resort reported an average base depth of 17-56 inches, with six quad chairlifts and 40 slopes open. Three more lifts will be open Easter weekend and the resort will extend hours to 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday evenings. At this time, Holiday Valley plans on operating five lifts and more than 30 slopes from April 1 through April 7. April 7 was the original target closing date for the resort, but revised plans are to operate one lift and 12

slopes from April 8 through April 12, then add lifts and slopes for the final weekend of April 13 and 14. “All of our plans are dependent on weather,” says Eshbaugh, “but the forecast is calling for scattered snow the rest of this week, sunshine over the weekend, then one more cold-air mass early next week with temperatures two to four degrees below normal.”

WestMont Ridge Approved By Board of Directors

By Jann Wiswall

The WestMont Ridge project at HoliMont officially is a “go” following approval by the Board of Directors at its meeting on March 15. Within 24 hours of the very successful auction held on February 23, 18 of 31 available lots were sold for a total of $2.754 million. According to

Board Chair Al Mahar in a letter to HoliMont members, the money from the auction “will exceed our costs in building the roads and sewers” and other utilities to prepare the site for construction of homes on those lots. The auctioned property and the remaining 13 lots represent Phase 1 of a two phase plan for

HoliMont. Phase 2 involves adding significant amenities and upgrades to the resort, including new slopes in the Sunset area and a new lodge. It also includes a multi-unit condominium; “Park & Pipe” terrain with lighted, nighttime hours; a new beginner-friendly ski area; a state-of-the-art See WestMont Ridge page 7

Mansfield Highway Superintendent Resigns

By Jann Wiswall

Gary Hahn has resigned his elected position as Town of Mansfield Highway Superintendent. The resignation was effective Saturday, March 23. Hahn, who was serving in his second term as

Superintendent, delivered his resignation letter in person to Town of Mansfield Supervisor Bob Keis. The resignation comes after a dozen or more Mansfield residents attended

the March 18 meeting of the Town Board of Directors to express their concern about the perception that Hahn had not been doing his job since September or October of last See Mansfield page 9
