The Ellicottville Distillery recently released its 18-month old bourbon whiskey both commercially and to the general public earlier this month. Chief Distiller Bryan Scharf said he wanted to get the bourbon to the two-year mark before his next release, but a lot of people have been asking for it so he decided to do an 18-month release on March 16. “The distillery had a limited run last September at the one-year mark,” he said. “We had probably 100 bottles out and it sold very well and very quickly within two months.” The bourbon is getter closer to the two-year mark, Scharf said, which he’s shooting for to do a full release in late September, which would also be the distillery’s three-year anniversary.

Former Ellicottville mayor Northrup recounts 93 years of outdoor adventures By Eli Phillips
To describe Edna Northrup as “adventurous” would be a gross understatement. Her tenacity for exploration and living life to the fullest can, and should, be described as limitless. The Allegany State Park Historical Society hosted the guest speaker this past Saturday, March 16 in the park’s “Camp Allegany” classroom. There, Northrup spoke on her many accomplishments throughout life, most notably her ascent to the base camp of Mount Everest at the spry age of 84. Born in Buffalo in 1925, Northrup’s love for the outdoors began at an early age with a passion for skiing. She recalls many trips into Ellicottville to hit the slopes, and it was there she met both her husband, Dr. Bill Northrup, and Lillian Congdon, also an accomplished skier.
The duo even published a book in 2002, “For the Love of Skiing; Our Story of Skiing in Ellicottville,” which highlights some of her and Congdon’s fondest memories in ski country. The Northrups had six children all together, including best-selling author Christian Northrup, and Olympic Skier Penny Northrup. Edna Northrup spoke about experiencing heartache, and persevering through the passing of several of her family. “Then my life changed, of course like everybody else in their life: somebody had to leave.” She recalled the pain of losing both her daughters, Cindy and Bonnie, as well as her husband Bill. Despite those hardships, she continued to blaze her own trail through life, and at 60, ran in and won the election for mayor of

Photo by Rick Miller Miles of blue plastic tubing connect about 850 taps on maple trees at Blesy Maple on Henrietta Road in Ashford. The tubing leads to a tank in the shed that houses the motor driving the vacuum system.
The first maple sap was a long time coming this season. Cold temperatures locked the sap in the trees. Last week, Brandon Blesy boiled his first run of sap into delicious amber syrup. The smell of maple syrup bubbling in the gas-fired evaporator filled the sugar shanty on Henrietta Road in the town of Ashford. Located just off Route 219, the Blesy Farm has a couple of woods full of maple trees. “We’ve got about 850 taps this year,” Blesy said as he watched the sap. “I added 250 more taps this year all on tubing. The weather has been so cold, I didn’t tap until last week.” Several miles of tubing wind through the woodlots collecting sap flowing from the trees
