Slip down a slope at the annual Penguin Paddle fundraiser By Deb Everts People who love winter fun and want to help with a worthy cause come to Holiday Valley each February to carry on the “Penguin Paddle” tradition that benefits the resort’s Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program. This year’s event takes place Saturday, Feb. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Yodler slope. Registration for the Paddle is $1 and is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the base of Yodeler. The slide begins at 1 p.m. The highlight of the day is the slide where competitors of all ages don garbage bags and helmets, then slip down the slope of Yodler on their bellies, “penguin-style.” Heats are divided into age groups from age 4 to adult. Another option is a mixed doubles race where participants take to the slope in a two-person bag. Hundreds of participants and spectators enjoy a fun-filled day with lots of laughs, a silent auction, raffles, great food and beverages. Raffle tickets and Penguin Paddle buttons will be on sale all day at Yodeler. Winners will be announced at the end of the races. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. They can be purchased from any LASP instructor or on the day of the event at Yodeler until the drawing at 3 p.m. Winners

Holiday Valley named Buffalo’s Best Ski Resort By Kellen M. Quigley

Everyone in Western New York knows how great hitting the slopes at Holiday Valley can be, but the 60-year-old ski resort recently received some recognition for its quality in the region and across the country. On Jan. 21, a poll from WIVB Channel 4 Buffalo revealed that the public chose Holiday Valley as Buffalo’s Best Ski Resort. “Thank you so much,” Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at Holiday Valley, told Channel 4. “We’re very proud of this.” Eshbaugh said while Holiday Valley is a ski resort during the winter

months, it’s also a top tier summer resort with a golf course, adventure park and more. “It’s a great place for families,” she said. “Families can come together and ski together here and have a great time.” When asked why she thought Holiday Valley was voted Buffalo’s best ski resort, Eshbaugh said the size of the resort and the variety it offers are big factors. “There’s 60 trails altogether, 13 lifts, lodging right here on the slopes,

Photo submitted The Ellicottville Historical Society is excited to have its 13-star American Flag back and restored, just in time for the town’s bicentennial this year. The 8-foot-long flag, stretched across an 8-foot dining room table, was in very poor condition, as seen by the faded fabric and tattered edges.

A 13-star American Flag has been restored and is back in the possession of the Ellicottville Historical Society. Its origin is a mystery, but experts say it’s a Civil War recruitment flag, dated 1861 to 1865. Carolyn Litchfield-Bauer, secretary for the historical society, said the flag’s return to the society began in October 2018 when she and her husband, David, were having dinner with friends, Mike Weishan, and his wife, Eileen. Weishan, who is

treasurer for the Ellicottville American Legion, asked Bauer if the historical society would like their flag back. Bauer said she had no idea what flag Weishan was referring to, so he told her about an old flag that had been hanging in the legion for years. He said it was not in the greatest shape and it belonged to the historical society. Intrigued by this flag, Bauer took the information to the board and they were intrigued as well. “Nobody knew of such a
