Changing lives on the slopes with Holiday Valley’s Adaptive Ski Program By Ginna Hensel Holiday Valley, a resort beloved by locals and travelers, focuses on fun, leisure, family and inclusivity. The resort is well known for its progressive and highly effective alpine ski lessons, but is also home to another ski program — the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program. The Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program (LASP) was founded by a group of Holiday Valley Ski Patrollers to honor their friend, Bill Lounsbury. Lounsbury lost his leg to cancer, but that did not stop him from skiing as he taught himself to ski with one leg. From there, the LASP was born, where instructors are specially trained in adaptive equipment and methods. In the first year, the program only had a couple of instructors with a total of 32 lessons. Today, the program has expanded to about 40 instructors who teach approximately 250 lessons each season. The LASP is beloved by both travelers afar and locals. One of those locals is Charlie Hensel, a student at Ellicottville Central School and a student of LASP for nearly 12 years, who is larger than life itself. Charlie started out in a child mountain man sit-ski — essentially a bucket seat with a ski on it. Now, he uses a ski slider, which is

Ellicottville area one of the snowiest in the nation

Photo by Ashley Baron According to msn.com, Cattaraugus County is the snowiest county in New York state, which is good news for skiers and snowboarders at Ellicottville’s HoliMont and Holiday Valley, located almost in the exact center of the county.

As far as snow, Mother Nature has been easy on us the past couple of weeks, while no doubt the time for much more of the white stuff is coming. For those who love hitting the ski slopes at our nearby resorts, we recently learned a bit of information to remind us of our place in the annals of snow in New York state. A local reader recently pushed an online item to us that many will find interesting: Cattaraugus is the snowiest county in New York, according to msn.com, and Ellicottville is right in the center of it. Indeed, the online feature listed the snowiest counties of each state (including Florida) based on weather data from the past three winter seasons.

Whether three feet of snow is on the ground or not, Cattaraugus County’s 350 miles of snowmobile trails couldn’t open until Dec. 18, the day after Big Game Muzzleloading Season ends. With a recent stretch of warmer, rainy weather, it doesn’t look like the trails will be opening again any time soon. However, volunteers from the county’s 10 recognized snowmobile clubs tried to get as much of the signage in place on the trails using four-wheelers before New York’s Big Game Season opened Oct. 1. With Allegany State Park’s nearly 100 miles of groomed

snowmobile trails, Cattaraugus County offers more than 450 miles of trails. Just add snow. And grooming. They will come. Cathy Hill, president of the Cattaraugus County Federation of Snowmobile clubs, was the longtime snowmobile trails coordinator for the county. It was a lot of paperwork, especially getting landowner permission each year. Hill has been a member of the Snow Bounders for 25 years. The club was formed in 1969. A lot of things have changed since then. The changes have become even more pronounced in the past 10 years. The biggest changes have been
