Ellicottville kicks off new year with ‘Winter Blues Weekend’ By Deb Everts
Chase the winter blues away and jumpstart the new year at Ellicottville’s Winter Blues Weekend. The popular blues and jazz-packed weekend kicks off Friday, Jan. 17 and continues through Sunday, Jan. 19. Barb Pump, project development manager for the Chamber, said the “Winter Blues Weekend” event was started in 2001 as a way to bring people to Ellicottville after the holiday season. People looking for something to do this time of year will find some of the hottest blues musicians performing live at a number of Ellicottville establishments throughout the village all weekend. Participating restaurants and bars include Madigans, Public House of Ellicottville, Finnerty’s Taproom, Balloons Restaurant, The Gin Mill and Villaggio. Presented by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Land Rover of Buffalo, the free event will give visitors the opportunity to enjoy great live music performed by over a dozen artists. Guitarist and singer/songwriter Maria Aurigema will bring her gutsy, harddriving original blues to The Gin Mill on Saturday night as she takes the stage at 8 p.m.

Holiday Valley Resort and HoliMont are islands of snow in an otherwise green landscape after recent warm, rainy weather. Skiers and snowboarders darted down ski slopes through the weekend and were skiing again on Monday, according to Holiday Valley marketing director Jane Eshbaugh. Holiday Valley held The Cleveland Race for 100 skiers on Saturday and Sunday, Eshbaugh said. “How do we keep the snow?” she asked. “We made a ton of it in mid-November and again in mid-December. We made snow again last Wednesday when the temperatures dipped into the single digits.” Snow is often stockpiled so it can be moved to areas where it is needed. Eshbaugh said Holiday Valley mountain crews have made more snow at this time of the season than in previous years. Monday marked the 42nd skiing day this

Plans for the Town of Ellicottville Bicentennial celebration are on track for the events of 2020. In preparation, the planning committee has met every month throughout the past year and started the new year off with a meeting Jan. 7. Organizer Dawn Westfall said there are three main events scheduled for the Bicentennial Celebration — Winter Carnival in March, the Town of Ellicottville’s Birthday Party in April and Old Home Week in July.
Westfall said Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival, March 14-15, is going to be part of the kick-off celebration and the first bicentennial event of the year. It will include the annual Mardi Gras Parade in the village on Saturday evening featuring floats with a historical theme. On Sunday, the popular costume parade will take place on the slopes of Holiday Valley, along with other weekend activities. “On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a reception from noon to 3 p.m. at the
