ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) has confirmed 99 new COVID-19 cases for July 29, 2021, resulting in 496 new COVID-19 cases within the past seven days.

Based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicators for community transmission, Erie County is now considered to have substantial COVID-19 transmission, with a case rate of 54 new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days.

In line with CDC recommendations for areas experiencing substantial COVID-19 transmission, starting Saturday, July 31, anyone who enters an Erie County building or facility must wear a face mask. This applies to all employees, vendors and visitors, regardless of vaccination status. Employees who enter other non-County owned buildings while on-the-job must wear a mask in those facilities as well. ECDOH and the CDC each highly recommend all owners of private establishments open to the public require mask wearing for all employees, guests, and patrons.

“Even with significantly fewer diagnostic tests being done, we have seen a sharp increase in new daily case totals,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein.

“Regardless of vaccination status, wearing a mask is one way to reduce the risk of disease transmission. We continue to recommend that people stay home when sick and get a diagnostic test if you experience symptoms or are a close contact of case.”

“There are people in our county who are highly vulnerable to serious illness or death from a Delta Variant COVID-19 infection, especially unvaccinated people, children who are too young to be eligible for vaccine, and immunocompromised individuals,” said County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “The preventive and protective measures – including vaccination – we take now will have a direct impact on the trends we see in new cases over the next few weeks. There is no better time to get vaccinated, as the available vaccines are safe and effective at preventing serious illness and death. Please do the right thing for your family, our community and our country: get vaccinated.”

Whitcomb backs NY Sheriffs Assn. call for Cuomo to resign The New York State Sheriffs Association on Aug. 6 called for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign, a move supported by Cattaraugus County Sheriff Timothy S. Whitcomb.

“The shocking and credible allegations of serious, and possibly criminal, misconduct by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, as revealed in the recent report from Attorney General James, cause us great concern,” the Sheriffs Association said in a statement.

“One of our most important duties as sheriffs is to support, and seek justice for, victims of sexual harassment and assault. We know firsthand how difficult it is for such victims to come forward in a normal case.”

The association’s statement said “it is hard for us to imagine how difficult it was for Gov. Cuomo’s victims to speak out against one of the most powerful men in the country — especially since he is known for ruthless and brutal retaliation.

“Gov. Cuomo hypocritically championed the rights of women to be free of sexual harassment in the workplace, while violating those

very rights in the most gross manner. He loudly called for the immediate ‘canceling’ of others accused of similar acts — often less credibly accused — and yet he demands that we ‘let the process play out’ for himself.

The sheriffs association said Cuomo should “do the right thing” and resign now to spare his victims and the citizens of this state a protracted and public re-telling of the incidents.

“If the governor does not promptly resign, we call upon the Assembly to do its duty and promptly impeach him,” the association said.

“To fail to do so will be failing these courageous victims and will discourage other vic-

tims of other powerful people from coming forward in the future.”

The sheriffs also encouraged the Assembly to “put into concrete action its oft-professed concern for victims of sexual harassment and assault.”

MEANWHILE, in a joint statement released Aug. 6, 41 county Democratic Party chairs called on Cuomo to “immediately resign.”

The Times Union of Albany reported that the statement came less than 48 hours after the party’s state chairman, Jay Jacobs, made the same call. ”We support President Biden and all our elected officials in their call for Gov. Cuo-

Cuomo has spent the week bunkered down as the state Assembly’s Judiciary Committee has announced it will proceed to wrap up its broad impeachment inquiry and potentially proceed with a formal impeachment proceeding that could see Cuomo removed from office at least temporarily as a trial convenes in the state Senate with that chamber’s lawmakers and the judges of the state Court of Appeals sitting as jurors.

ERIE COUNTY, NY – Erie County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein and representatives from the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) Office of Epidemiology met today, August 9, with a group of school leaders from rural, suburban and urban school districts, including Erie 1 BOCES and Erie 2 BOCES. The purpose of this meeting was to hear about school leaders’ experiences with COVID-19 health and safety guidance during the last school year and this summer.

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) announced last week that schools should look to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations and their local health departments for COVID-19 guidance. “This is a welcome opportunity for ECDOH and schools to move forward together with practices that reduce the risks of COVID-19 transmission in school settings, and maximize student and staff time within classrooms and extracurricular activities,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale

Burstein. “The school leaders’ insights are valuable for our school team to hear, and we discussed use of face masks, physical distancing, return to school protocols, transportation and lunch settings.”

ECDOH will review this feedback as it compiles COVID-19 recommendations for k-12 school settings for this upcoming school year. ECDOH will also consider recommendations from the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in developing that guidance.

There is no set timetable for any ECDOH school recommendation announcements. However, ECDOH recognizes the extreme time constraints that schools face in creating policies and operational plans, and communicating with parents and families before September. ECDOH will share any guidance with school leaders and the general public as soon as it is available.

Benton Named Football Coach at Dunkirk Gowanda resident Mark Benton was recently appointed to the position of head varsity football coach at Dunkirk High School.

Benton began his football coaching career at Dunkirk back in 1978 as the Marauders placed second in the old Southwestern Conference.

He has since coached at six different schools and was the Director of Football Operations for NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly’s company from 19881996. Dunkirk opens their season at Kenmore East on September 3.

Try These Free Great Lakes Teaching Resources from New York Sea Grant: ENVIRO-TIME Reading Lists, Lake Sturgeon and Freedom Seekers Curricula ITHACA, NY— New York Sea Grant is providing teachers with new educational resources for the coming school year. The resources include a compendium of environmentally themed reading lists for pre-K to 12th graders, a curriculum connecting Underground Railroad history with the Great Lakes environment, and the recently-released Lake Sturgeon Intermediate Curriculum with supplemental hands-on teaching tools.

These resources, and others are freely available through the Great Lakes Ecosystem Education Exchange clearinghouse on the New York Sea Grant website at www.nyseagrant.org/gleee.

The 59-page Enviro-Time Storytime: Recommended Environmental Reading Lists for Children Pre K-12, 2nd Edition from New York Sea Grant is designed to connect readers and read-aloud listeners in the Great Lakes, and beyond, to the local and global environment. More than 48 books were carefully selected to highlight diversity in the coastal sciences, books by and about indigenous North Americans, environmental activism for kids, sustainability, sturgeon conservation, and Great Lakes stewardship.

The Freedom Seekers: The Underground Railroad, Great Lakes and Science Literacy Activities curriculum for teaching New York State’s Underground Railroad-related environmental connections is the result of a collaboration by Great Lakes’ Sea Grant offices, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, Niagara Falls City Schools, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, The Park School

of Buffalo, and the University of Buffalo Department of Environment and Sustainability. In addition to Great Lakes Literacy Principles, this resource incorporates environmental justice education approaches to teaching about local history.

New York Sea Grant created the Lake Sturgeon Intermediate Curriculum as part of a suite of resources focused on the conservation of one of the Great Lakes’ largest and longest-living native fishes. DHS Announces upcoming animal rabies immunization clinic MAYVILLE, NY — The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Public Health has announced a free rabies vaccination clinic will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Town of Ellington Highway Garage on E. Main St. (Route 62) in Kennedy, NY. Vaccinations will be provided free of charge to all dogs, cats, and domesticated ferrets three months of age and older.

The Town of Ellington will sponsor the event. Dr. Mary Sales will be the attending veterinarian.

Unvaccinated people must wear facemarks. Please follow all COVID and social distancing measures established by the Town of Ellington. Pet owners must bring previous rabies vaccinations records for each animal receiving a shot to ensure proper and effective vaccination; clinic staff will confirm previous rabies vaccinations records. All dogs must be on a leash (small dogs may be in a carrier). All cats must be in

carriers.

New York State Public Health Law requires each dog, cat, and domesticated ferret over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies and county residents are encouraged to be responsible pet owners by having their pets vaccinated. Pets are able to receive the rabies vaccine when they are 3 months of age.

Rabies is a very serious disease of warm-blooded animals caused by a virus.

Racoons, bats, skunks, and foxes are common disease carriers. The virus is transmitted to humans and animals through saliva an dit can enter the body from a bite, scratch, scrape or open cut. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system and can cause brain swelling and ultimately death within days of the onset of symptoms.

Erie County Activities Scheduled At The Erie County Fair Erie County has planned a full schedule of activities and displays for the Erie County Fair, which will run through August 22 at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg.

The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) will have its mobile RV unit stationed next to the Expo Hall each day, offering COVID-19 vaccine. Pfizer vaccine will be available for youth ages 12-17, and Moderna vaccine for adults ages 18 and older. Parental consent is required for individuals under 18 years of age.

Anyone receiving a COVID-19 vaccine

from ECDOH at the Erie County Fair will receive food and drink vouchers ($10 value) for use at participating concession stands at this year’s Erie County Fair.

Representatives from the Erie County Departments of Veterans Services, Environment and Planning, Senior Services, Parks and Recreation, Social Service and Health, the Office for People with Disabilities, and the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library will be set up in the Marketplace Building.

County Officials Recommend Public Wear Masks and Get Vaccinated MAYVILLE, NY — On August 11, Chautauqua County Officials provided an update on the novel Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) in Chautauqua County.

As of August 10, 2021, Chautauqua County’s statistics are: • 93 active cases of COVID-19, which includes 14 new cases with: • 8 cases in 14701 (Jamestown) • 1 case in 14048 (Dunkirk) • 1 case in 14062 (Forestville) • 1 case in 14733 (Falconer) • 1 case in 14738 (Frewsburg) • 1 case in 14775 (Ripley) • 1 case in 14781 (Sherman) • 214 cases under quarantine; and • 5 positive patients hospitalized in Chautauqua County.

To date, there have been 9,211 recovered cases, 159 deaths, and 9,463 total confirmed cases since the pandemic began.

The County is also experiencing an uptick in cases this month. Since August 1, 2021, there have been 119 cases of COVID-19 in Chautauqua County. Of those cases, 84 cases (71%) were unvaccinated individuals, 25 cases (21%) were fully vaccinated individuals, 2 cases (2%) were partially vaccinated individuals, and 8 cases (7%) had an unknown vaccination status.

“Although the uptick in cases does not indicate a particular hot spot or cluster of cases in the county, we are seeing some breakthrough cases here,” said Christine Schuyler, Chautauqua County Public Health Director.

A breakthrough case is when someone who has been vaccinated against COVID-19 still gets the virus due to strain variants as the virus evolves or mutates.

“The Delta variant has not been confirmed in Chautauqua County through genetic sequencing because local labs do not have that capability. However, the recent spike in cases, the rise in the number of breakthrough infections, and consultation with state experts leads us to believe that the Delta variant is spreading in our community,” said Schuyler.

County health officials stressed that although no vaccine is 100 percent effective at preventing illness in vaccinated people, vaccines are effective in preventing severe disease, hospitalizations and death.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is a critical tool to bring the pandemic under control,” said Schuyler. “Although variants, including Delta, are having a slight impact on the ability of vaccines to guard against mild disease and infection, vaccinated people are still three times less likely than unvaccinated people to contract Delta, making it much harder for them to spread it to others.”

Erie County Department Of Health plans free, drive-thru rabies vaccination clinics for September ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) has opened registration for free rabies vaccination clinics on Saturday, September 11 in Orchard Park and Saturday, September 25 in Cheektowaga.

Saturday, September 11 the clinic is from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Erie Community College South located at 4041 Southwestern Blvd., Building 7, Orchard Park.

On Saturday, September 25,the clinic is from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Erie County Emergency Services Training and Operations Center located at 3359 Broadway (Near Union Road), Cheektowaga.

Appointments are required and a limited number of appointments are available.

Individuals who are unable to access online registration may call (716) 961-6800 during business hours to schedule an appointment.

Jocelyn Mesch lives on a small dairy farm in Collins, NY with her parents and 4 younger siblings. Jocelyn is currently being homeschooled through her sophomore year. She is active in the Erie County 4-H livestock program with dairy, market beef, and market swine, and actively participates in the 4-H Teen Ambassador program, which works closely with the Farm to School program. Jocelyn enjoys outdoor activities that involve working with her animals, hunting, and can be found sketching or painting in her spare time. Jocelyn is truly honored and excited to serve as the 2021-2022 Erie County Alternate Dairy Princess.

She looks forward to promoting the dairy industry and being a voice for farmers throughout Erie County.

Pet owners must make an appointment in order to attend these clinics. No walk-ins will be accepted. Dogs, cats and ferrets three months of age and older are eligible for a vaccination. Up to three pets will be accepted per appointment. Pet owners are asked to bring proof of vaccination with them to the event in order to receive a three-year vaccination certificate; otherwise, a one-year certificate will be given. Pet owners should limit the number of people in the vehicle.

Face masks or cloth face coverings will be required at all times, and physical distancing will be strictly enforced by clinic staff.

ECDOH thanks the Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society, the Medaille College Veterinary Technology Program, the SPCA Serving Erie County and Erie County SMART for providing volunteers and support in coordinating these free rabies vaccination clinics.

You know, I think I have been shy most of my life. As a young child, it was not easy for me to interact with older folks. In fact, it was not really easy to interact with strangers, even those of my own age. Perhaps, it had something to do with the fact that I was farm boy in rural country- side and opportunities to relate with “new comers” were few. In fact, experiences with a broad range of social activities were few, other than with family and neighboring youngsters.

And thus, in my small world, interactions with neighboring folks was a comfortable setting during the days of my early youth.

And so, life moved on.

It was January, and I completed eighth grade one-half year early. This rather timid farm boy went from a small rural oneroom school house to the large Central High School nearly twenty miles from my home.

I entered ninth grade in the middle of the school year. Most of the other students were “Village youngsters,” who had “always been there” as a group. Student social groups had already been well established.

When I entered in January, the students were half way through their ninth grade studies. I started the ninth grade with the hope of catching up to the others. Right there, as I saw it, made me different from the others.

You know, I saw myself as a farm kid who just did not quite belong. More or less like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. I was a quiet student, just trying not to make any waves or maybe hoping not to be noticed. Someone has said, “It’s easy to mistake shyness for coldness, and silence for indifference.” How true that can be. The days turned into weeks, and being shy was no advantage. I so wanted to be accepted by the others.

Through these early experiences I found that fundamentally, all of us are social creatures. Our group community may be small, but “belonging” seems to be what matters.

You know, when in the company of others, our thoughts seem to construct a mental map. We construct in our thoughts, what we think other people may be thinking of us. And, by so doing, we focus... in our minds... the direct spotlight on ourselves.

You know, I believe that people react to what they believe to be a reality.

I believe the fundamental cause of shyness rests on where we place our focus.

If our focus is on the reactions we think we produce in others about ourselves, it can become over powering. In fact, we risk over-analyzing every thought, word, and deed of our own doing, and thereby, we almost disable ourselves by painful self-awareness. With that being the focus, shyness takes over and can become a stifling impediment.

True, I have been a shy person most all of my life. However, I have found, when one has a real concern for others, and we place our prime focus on others and their needs, we thus, ignore our own concern about how others may view us. We really find genuine momentum for a warm and giving relationship for and with others. I call this concern for others “compassion”. Therefore, compassion becomes the paramount emotion about what one deeply feels. It is with that focus, that the spotlight on self-awareness becomes sharply diminished, and shyness begins to fade into oblivion. Ah yes, it is the needs of others, that really count. I have found THIS works every time: “do unto others, what you would have others do unto you.”
