Gowanda Is My Home

Submissions open for Downtown Springville Art Crawl SPRINGVILLE — Springville Center for the Arts is accepting artwork submissions for the juried annual Downtown Springville Art Crawl. The deadline to submit is Saturday, May 1. This one-night art event places artwork in small businesses along Springville’s East Main Historic District and visitors stroll from location to location during the free event. The art crawl takes place Saturday, June 5 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. In addition to fine art work, this year’s event is looking for musicians and performers to play interspersed with the artwork, arts installation proposals, arts demonstrations and fine crafters looking to table in a sales area. A small “pop-up shop” marketplace will feature small business owners that do not yet have a storefront space. Community organizations interested in setting up a table to promote their

activities are also sought. To submit artwork, artists are asked to email images of their submissions and an entry form to SCAArtSubmissions@g mail.com. Five original pieces of any medium may be accepted. There is no restriction on size or age. If accepted by the jury, artists will be notified and work must be delivered ready to display by May 29. A submission form and details are available at crawl. springvillearts.org. Performers, community organizations and others interested in participating should call the center at (716) 592-9038 or email SCAArtSubmissions@g mail.com. The event will follow all current COVID-19 safety guidelines and is therefore subject to change. The art jury this year includes Gerald Mead, Cindi O’Mara and Richard Stamps. Gerald Mead is an independent curator, art collector and arts writer who

GOWANDA – A beautification effort is planned in the village Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Local residents are warmly encouraged to volunteer to clean up trash along walking routes and beyond. Tyler Bettker, a local third-grader recently taking a walk with his mom Susan Covert-Bettker, noticed trash strewn along their path and said “We need to pick this up,” inspiring a grassroots community clean-up It turns out that spring has sprung some flowers, but has also unveiled the garbage that has accumulated during winter. The weekend after Earth Day, which is observed annually April 22, is an ideal opportunity for the public to pitch in at the “Gowanda Is My Home: A Community Clean-up.” The sites recognized for cleaning include: Creekside Park, North Water Street along Cattaraugus Creek and, under the Aldrich Street bridge Those interested should stop by Jesse’s Home & Gifts, 53 West Main St., during business hours to sign up your group for the

Gowanda mayor will donate this year’s $8,000 salary to non-profits

GOWANDA — Mayor David Smith said during his recent state of the village address that he will donate his $8,000 salary to non-profit organizations in the village. Among the recipients will be the Gowanda Hollywood Theatre, the Gowanda Free Library, the Gowanda Fire Department and the Gowanda Ambulance Department. “I believe I am a public servant,” Smith said during his address, which also inArt Crawl continued on ........... page 3 cluded a presentation of the

Meanwhile, Smith said one of the most important projects that the village has worked is the Thatcher Brook Flood Mitigation Project, which is now entering the design phase. Flooding from Thatch-

Addressing the state of the village, Smith cited steady improvement in Gowanda’s fiscal stress designation. In 2015, the village’s des-
