Gowanda Is My Home

Submissions open for Downtown Springville Art Crawl SPRINGVILLE — Springville Center for the Arts is accepting artwork submissions for the juried annual Downtown Springville Art Crawl. The deadline to submit is Saturday, May 1.

This one-night art event places artwork in small businesses along Springville’s East Main Historic District and visitors stroll from location to location during the free event.

The art crawl takes place Saturday, June 5 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

In addition to fine art work, this year’s event is looking for musicians and performers to play interspersed with the artwork, arts installation proposals, arts demonstrations and fine crafters looking to table in a sales area.

A small “pop-up shop” marketplace will feature small business owners that do not yet have a storefront space. Community organizations interested in setting up a table to promote their

activities are also sought.

To submit artwork, artists are asked to email images of their submissions and an entry form to SCAArtSubmissions@g mail.com.

Five original pieces of any medium may be accepted.

There is no restriction on size or age. If accepted by the jury, artists will be notified and work must be delivered ready to display by May 29.

GOWANDA – A beautification effort is planned in the village Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Local residents are warmly encouraged to volunteer to clean up trash along walking routes and beyond.

Tyler Bettker, a local third-grader recently taking a walk with his mom Susan Covert-Bettker, noticed trash strewn along their path and said “We need to pick this up,” inspiring a grassroots community clean-up It turns out that spring has sprung some flowers, but has also unveiled the garbage that has accumulated during winter. Gowanda mayor will donate this year’s $8,000 salary to non-profits

GOWANDA — Mayor David Smith said during his recent state of the village address that he will donate his $8,000 salary to non-profit organizations in the village.

Among the recipients will be the Gowanda Hollywood Theatre, the Gowanda Free Library, the Gowanda Fire Department and the Gowanda Ambulance Department.

Gowanda Sports Report

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI The last week of the delayed 2020 winter sports season saw either the boys or girls teams in Section 6 playing every day.

For the girls, quarter finals started March 22 when No. 7 Gowanda Panthers traveled to the No. 2 Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds for what would be Gowanda’s last action of the basketball season. It was a close game for a good part of the first quarter. Gowanda’s Miya Scanlan hit a 3-pointer right away to give the Panthers a 3-0 opening lead. Chautauqua Lake quickly narrowed that to 3-2. Miya’s sister, Crissa Scanlan, put Gowanda back up by three before the Thunderbirds mounted their first challenge of the game, finally moving into an 8-7 lead. The lead bounced back and forth until Gowanda held their last lead of the game by a single point, 13-12. From that point, the Thunderbirds turned it up, scoring eight straight points to take a 20-13 advantage into the second period. In the second and third periods, Chautauqua Lake outscored Gowanda 18-7 and 18-9, respectively. With the game out of reach, 56-29 going into the final quarter, the game had mostly downgraded to practice for the bench players. Chautauqua Lake would only generate six points in that last period to nine for Gowanda leaving Chautauqua Lake on top 62-38 at the final buzzer. Miya Scanlan led the Panthers with 11 points including three 3-point scores.

After a reasonable amount of success in the early going, Gowanda again had fallen into a scoring slump marked by a very low shooting percentage from the floor. This was very reminiscent of the home game with Randolph where the Panthers had controlled the game for the better part of the first three quarters.

With 2:43 left in that game, Gowanda held a 40-26 lead.

The Panthers would score only four more points in the rest of the game, opening the

door for Randolph to come back for a 57-44 win and allowing them to remain unbeaten. That same Cardinals team would face Chautauqua Lake in the semi-finals on March 24. A 53-40 win in that game and a 56-52 win over Frewsburg in the finals gave Randolph a perfect 18-0 season and the Class C title.

The Gowanda boys basketball team did slightly better than the girls team in the playoffs. In a relatively low-scoring game, No. 8 Gowanda lost to No. 1 Riverside at Grabiarz School of Excellence in the quarter-finals on March 22. Still, it was a close game with Gowanda only falling just 10 points short, losing 49-39. Riverside advanced to the finals with a 94-86 win over Portville. They would eventually lose in the finals to Tapestry Charter 93-72.

AS APRIL begins, football, volleyball and the competitive cheer squad will all be in action for Gowanda in the second part of the delayed fall sports season.

Spring football promises to be an interesting “once in a lifetime” experience that has been eagerly awaited in the village. The team will be under the guidance of a new coach as Tyler Thompson has taken over the team.

The district also commented this week that they are “so excited” for the upcoming volleyball season with 49 girls registering for the team on the first day of sign-ups.

In other local sports news, Gowanda girls are having a major impact on the JCC Swimming team.

On March 22, Jamestown Community College posted a 122-75 win over Genesee Community College.

Two Gowanda girls played a significant part in that victory. Megan Stang went three for three in the meet. She took first in 1650Y Freestyle (23:20.01), 500Y Freestyle (6:48.19) and 200Y Breaststroke (3:06.88). Her 500Y Freestyle time was a

Mayor continued from 1 er Brook is a longstanding threat to residents and businesses in the village, but an agreement involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the state Department of Environmental Conservation calls for a $10 million diversion structure to remove that threat forever.

“I’m very happy about it,” Mayor David Smith said earlier this year. “My number one initiative since taking office in 2017 has been to eliminate the threat of flood-

ing from Thatcher Brook.”

The most recent serious flooding in 2009 caused $90 million in damage and destruction. It also forced the Tri-County Hospital to close.

That $90 million would be closer to $120 million in 2020 dollars, Smith said.

The diversion ditch — both above ground and a large underground culvert — would be automatically opened by rising water and the speed of the flow.

It would divert water from Thatcher Brook at the steel deck bridge on Hill Street in a channel following the railroad tracks, discharging directly into Cattaraugus Creek.

“This project will eliminate the flood plain and

eliminate the need for residents to purchase flood insurance every year,” Smith said in January. It will also increase property values by 23% to 25%.

“It will divert the floodwaters before it flows through a major portion of the village,” Smith said.

“Even in a 200-year rain event, there would be no catastrophic flooding like we’ve had in the past.”

Smith said the Army Corps of Engineers will pay 65% of the $10 million price tag, with the Department of Environmental Conservation and the village splitting the remaining 35%.

The village has a $1 million state grant obtained several years ago by former

State Sen. Catharine M. Young and a healthy budget surplus to pay its share of the project.

The $10 million Thatcher Brook Flood Mitigation is part of a total $18.5 million of project support that Gowanda will be receiving. The Waterfront Development will receive $2.5 million of that number, which helped improve Gateway Park and the Hollywood Theater.

Regarding the 2021-22 budget, Smith said that the village will be slightly reducing its tax levy for the year, by 0.03%. The increase will result in a 1.38 percent tax increase in Erie County.

In Cattaraugus County, due to equalization rates, there will be a 0.08% tax decrease.

Concord Senior Center News

Now that things are opening up & more people a being vaccinated – the Concord Senior Center has added some new events/activities.

The center will be having Stay Fit Lunches five days per week with the exception of the third Wednesday of the month which is Red Cross Blood Day. The center is also introducing a new item, meal punch cards. Each person will receive a punch card and for every meal attended, they will receive a punch.

Each person with 10 punches on their card will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card. Reservations are required for meals. Another new item to be started is University Express Lectures.

The lectures will be available via Zoom.

Garden Club will be resuming the second Monday of the month starting at 1:30pm.

er, the center is hoping to acquire corn hole boards and set up a few teams. Interested parties should contact the center. Also with warmer weather comes picnic season, which means grilling on the grill. Have something particular in mind, contact the center and they will do their best to accommodate.

Free Train Ride and Sunrise Service GOWANDA– Trinity UCC of Gowanda announces a special event to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Morning at a “Sunrise Service” on April 4, 2021. This service will be held on a hill top and transportation to the service will be complementarily provided by a New York & Lake Erie Railroad train departing from the Gowanda Depot, 50 Commercial Street, Gowanda, NY at 5:30am, April 4th.

Boys State is a week-long program that immerses high school youth (currently com-

pleting their junior year) in citizenship and leadership training. They learn the practical aspects of government as it exists in New York State, and come to recognize that the individual is integral to the character and success of government.

The 2021 American Legion Boys State program will be held virtually this year

from June 27-July 1, 2021.A richly rewarding and educational program where the selection serves as testimony to a participant’s character and leadership skills and is an experience recognized by employers, U.S. service academies and university admissions boards as an indicator of strong leadership and character traits.

Creek, during business hours through Saturday, April 17, 2021. But please make sure to mention they are donations for the junior/senior class prom at Silver Creek. Springville Center for the Arts is seeking Artists and Craftspeople As recipients of the “Play Everywhere Design Challenge” run by KABOOM!, the Springville Center for the Arts is seeking to commission metalsmith, artists, masons, and more to create the interactive elements of their Arts Mini-Park.

The Arts Mini-Park will be

geared toward children and incorporate discoverable play and art elements, built by local artists and craftspeople from the community. The future home of the Arts Mini-Park is a shaded 10 by 100 foot space between the arts center building and Franklin St.

Landscape architect Joy Kuebler will hold an informative presentation Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 7:00p.m. at the Springville Center for the Arts or virtually via springvillearts.org.

Cattaraugus County Veteran Services to conduct April sessions Steve E. McCord, director of Cattaraugus County Veterans Services, will be available to discuss Veterans Affairs benefit laws, the healthcare system or other concerns or questions veterans and their families may have.
