GOWANDA – Disney’s “Winnie the Pooh KIDS,” a heart-warming musical production based on the classic characters of A.A. Milne and the 2011 Disney animated feature film, will be presented by Gowanda Middle

“Frozen” series.

Our 30-minute adventure begins in the Hundred Acre Woods where Winnie the Pooh is once again on the hunt for his favorite snack – honey! As he continues to search, he meets up with his good friends, Tigger, Piglet,

SPRINGVILLE — The Springville Center for the Arts is beginning a community ecobrick project with a meeting May 19.

What is an ecobrick? To put it simply, an ecobrick is a plastic bottle packed with plastic waste. The intention is to keep plastic out of landfills where it could leach into the soil and water. The result is something unexpected.

Ecobricks can be used to build structures ranging from chairs and garden beds to houses. The ecobricks are held together by either silicone or cob, both eco-friendly and inexpensive building materials that allow the structure to be disassembled if needed and the ecobricks

reused for other projects.

Cassandra Nason, an intern at Springville Center for the Arts, designed the project as part of her master’s degree in Critical Museum Studies at UB, and as a way to merge her interests in community engagement, public art and environmental issues. The goal of the project is to gather enough ecobricks to create a raised garden bed in the village of Springville.

Interested in making an ecobrick? People of all ages are encouraged to participate in this community project by creating their own ecobricks right at home. Instructions detailing the process can be found on the Global Ecobrick Alliance website, as

GMS Perform continued from 1 Rabbit, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and Owl. The friends soon discover Christopher Robin has been captured by a mysterious creature, named The Backson! Getting ready to save their friend, the animals learn valuable lessons about teamwork, dedication and the importance of friendship.

Preparations for this musical theatre experience are in full swing at GMS. Volunteers are busy making costumes, creating honey jars and other props, as well as building the Hundred Acre Wood. The music rooms, classrooms, auditorium and hallways have also been alive with lines, lyrics and choreography these past few weeks in preparation for the upcoming show. The middle school performers are excited to share the happiness and joy that is sure to come with this musical to families and community members in this time of difficulty and uncertainty.

“Throughout this pandemic, everyone, myself included, has gone through a time where they have felt alone, distant and disconnected from everyone,” says teacher and musical director Adam Bett. “When choosing the show for this year, I wanted one that featured the talent we have in our program but as well as one that would help to begin to heal and bring our Gowanda community together. Since EVERYONE knows and grew up with the beloved characters of the Hundred Acre Wood, this show was perfect to bring us all together!”

Bett can’t wait for the community and families to see the results of the students’ hard work and dedication during these trying times.

“These students have not only managed to successfully navigate all of their remote school responsibilities, but have also stayed positive role models in the classrooms,” says Bett. “To say they have a lot on their plates would be an understatement. With not having a live audience this year, plus the logistics of keeping all of our cast and crew safe during this pandemic, this musical experience has provided us with many unique challenges we have never

encountered, which include reduced amount of rehearsals due to lack of transportation, professionally recording the audio and video of the entire show separately, the need for simple costumes that can be easily put on without dressing rooms, and lastly, the need for every actor to be masked at all times.

Our team has faced these challenges head on, working intensely to put on the best musical experience for our students and community that we can.”

Principal Todd Miklas pointed out the tremendous energy level of students involved with the musical experience.

“For those involved, their commitment has been extensive in the hours each student and staff member have dedicated to making sure this is the best performance to date,” says Miklas. “It is great seeing their smiles and enthusiasm as they head on down to practice. I continue to be impressed with our student’s pride in our school and the opportunities and activities that they have available to them, such as the musical.

Truly, the key here is Mr. Bett and how he builds up the production, launches it, organizes it, communicates all the particulars, and simply directs many, many moving components from within the production to external, in simply making things come together; absolutely amazing work by this passionate educator.”

“Winnie the Pooh Kids” will be streamed exclusively online Tuesday, May 25, 2021, and Thursday, May 27, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. (The same recording will be streamed both nights.) Virtual attendees are encouraged to think

of it as going to the movie theater. The production will promptly begin at 7:00 p.m. and continue until it is finished. Unfortunately, there is no option to rewind or go back if families join late.

To help bring families together, “Family Tickets” will be sold this year for $10 and will give your family access to view the production on one device with as many people in your immediate family as you wish. If you want or need to view the production on multiple devices, you may purchase as many tickets as needed. Please keep the health and safety of your family in mind when purchasing tickets.

Mr. Bett will also be hosting a “Curtain Up Facebook Live” event 30 minutes before the production on May 25 to talk about the production and recognize the 8th-grade actors who will be performing in the last musical of their middle school careers.

The narrators for this year’s musical theatre experience are Aiden Carroll,

Helena Wallschlager will be performing the role of “Queen Honey Bee” while Emma Golden will be “Queen Bumblebee.” Singing and performing the roles of “Rainbow Chorus” include Hayleigh Hooper, Sara Lillie, Cynthia Schukraft and Maddison Smith.

Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo Announces Grant Awards from Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Legacy Funds BUFFALO, NY – The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo announced that 90 Western New York organizations received more than $2 million in grant awards from endowment funds created to carry on the legacy of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Established in 2016, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation created the Legacy Funds at the Community Foundation to provide support to areas that were important to Mr. Wilson during his lifetime: Caregivers, Community Assets, Design and Access, and Youth Sports. Schools in Cattaraugus County prep for May 18 budget votes School budget votes, set for May 18, will be held at every school district in the region.

If any budgets are defeated by voters — a relatively rare occurrence since the imposition of the state-mandated property tax cap in 2011 limiting large jumps in tax levies — district officials will decide whether or not to bring an amended budget to voters on June 15 or to adopt a contingency budget with mandated reductions in spending. If voters turn down the amended budget, a contingency budget would then go into place.

Budget figures were provided by districts. Enrollment figures came from the state Department of Education’s annual Basic Educational Data System report on enrollment.

Gowanda Sports Report

The Gowanda Varsity volleyball team hosted Pine Valley on May 3 for back to back matches. The teams agreed on a best two of three format rather than the usual best three of five normally played. The first match was quite close with Gowanda coming out on top two games to zero by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.

Leading the Gowanda effort in the first match were Zoey Kota (15 assists, 1 kill) and Miya Scanlan.(12 kills and 1 ace). While the first game in the second match continued close until ending in a 25-22 win, the final game was a 25-5 blowout. In the second match, Kota tallied 16 assists, 1 kill and 1 ace. Scanlan contributed 12 kills and an ace.

The next day, Gowanda hosted North Collins (8-0) for another 2-out-of-3 double header. In the first match, Gowanda would score the first two points of the first game, but North Collins rallied to tie the game at 3 on the way to taking an 11-5 lead.

That advantage grew to 22-13 before Gowanda began a comeback. They would close the gap to 22-18, but that was the best they could do. North Collins scored three of the next four points to take a 25-18 win. Game 2 started out close with single-point leads being exchanged up to a North

Collins 6-5 lead. A 5-point Gowanda burst moved them into a 10-6 advantage. North Collins pushed back into the lead by a score of 18-15.

The teams evenly split the next fourteen points giving the visitors a 25-22 win in the game and a 2-0 match 1 win. Game 1 of Match 2 was very much like the game just played with the exception that North Collins began to pull away a bit sooner. They won by a score of 25-17. The final game was closely contested up to an 8-8 tie before North Collins slowly began to pull away to move the score to 14-9. From there, the teams split the next 22 points giving North Collins another 2-0 match win by a score of 25-20. North Collins continued unbeaten through the rest of the week.

They ended the regular season 13-0 making them the 1 seed in Class D in the playoffs.

May 5 was Senior Night at Gowanda as the volleyball team hosted Cattaraugus-Little Valley for their last home action of the season. Before the warm-ups, seniors Zoey Kota, Emma Luther, Miya Scanlan and Abby Valone were acknowledged along with their parents. The match that followed saw Gowanda take a 3-0 win.

All three games ended with the same 25-14 score.

Scanlan had 13 kills and an ace in the game. Kota was credited with 19 assists and

5 aces.

These two teams met again May 7 at Cattaraugus as Gowanda closed out the regular season. The first game at Cattaraugus was much closer than the games at Gowanda. Although C-LV was up 15-12 mid-game, it would be tied at 15 and 16 before Gowanda gained a slim lead at 21-17. C-LV rallied to

tied at 13 through 15. From that point Gowanda took charge outscoring the hosts 10-2 for a 25-17 win.

Down 2-0 in the match, C-LV quickly reversed a 2-0 Gowanda lead to go up 5-3.

They would stay either tied or ahead until they opened up a 23-16 lead. Gowanda battled back to tie the game at 24 and 25. After C-LV scored

close to 21-20.The score was 22-21 when Gowanda hit for three straight points and a 25-21 win. Game 2 started out all C-LV at 5-0. Gowanda would tie the score at eight before moving into a single point lead. The score was also

Gowanda ended the season with a record of 11-3 in CCAA East making them the 5 seed in the C2 Section playoffs.

fore turning the ball back to Springville on downs.

Springville lost 20 yards due to penalties and a bobbled handoff in the backfield before punting the ball back to Gowanda. After unsuccessful drives for both teams, Gowanda took possession on their own 16. They would move as far as the 49 before an incomplete 4th down pass gave the ball back to Springville.

This time, Springville quickly moved down the field. A Gowanda off-sides penalty eventually set them up for a 10-yard touchdown run. That moved the score to 21-0. With time running short in the half, Gowanda quickly took the ball from the 50 to the Springville 35 with a 15-yard Gavin Phillips reception. They would have

got off two running plays before an errant hike went deep into their backfield.

Gowanda recovered the ball on the Springville 35. It would take Gowanda just four plays to reach the end zone from there. Springville answered on the next series, boosting their lead to 28-6.

On the next play, a Gowanda turnover gave them the ball back on the Gowanda 30. five plays later, they scored again. The extra point failed and the score was 34-6 deep in the 4th quarter. On Gowanda’s last drive, they would reach the Springville 15 before losing the ball again. Springville ran out the clock driving from their own 20 to the Gowanda 20 as the game ended.

DEC and State Parks encourage campers to use local firewood while enjoying the outdoors With the start of the 2021 camping season underway, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Erik Kulleseid today encouraged campers to use local firewood and follow New York State firewood regulations to help prevent the spread of invasive species. Untreated firewood – firewood that has not met the state’s heat treatment standard – can contain invasive pests that kill trees. To protect New York’s forests, untreated firewood should not be moved more than 50 miles from its source of origin.

“Using local firewood is an easy way to help protect our forests from invasive pests and diseases,” said Commissioner Seggos.

“Moving untreated firewood is one of the main ways invasive pests spread to new areas. I urge all campers to help stop the spread of invasive species and protect the places we love by leaving untreated firewood at home and using firewood from local sources.”

“We all have a role to play in protecting our parks and forests from the risks of invasive species that can be carried on firewood,” said Commissioner Kulleseid.

“By leaving their firewood at home and using only local sources, campers can help slow the spread of disease and protect our precious natural resources.”

Many people take campfire wood from their backyards or neighborhoods as they head out to a favorite camping spot, not realizing the wood may be hiding the eggs, larvae, spores, adults, or even seeds of invasive threats. Hitching a ride on infested or infected firewood allows these pests to spread faster and farther than they could have on their own. A variety of invasive species can be transported on firewood, from wood boring beetles and defoliators to fungi and diseases.

New York State firewood regulations: •Prohibit untreated firewood from being brought into New York State from other states or countries; •Prohibit untreated fire-

wood grown in the state from being transported more than 50 miles from its source or origin; and •Require that people carry source, origin, or treatment documentation whenever transporting firewood.

The origin of the wood is where it was grown. Anyone that cuts firewood for personal use is required to fill out a Self-Issued Certificate of Origin (PDF), available on DEC’s website. Producers of untreated firewood for sale must obtain wood grown

within 50 miles of their business but may then declare the business as the source of the firewood. Examples of the source documentation (PDF) are also available on DEC’s website. Consumers purchasing untreated firewood should make sure the source is clearly labeled to know how far the wood may be transported.

“New York-Approved Heat Treated/Pest Free,” and can be moved without restriction. Heat-treating to this standard has been proven to kill insects and diseases that may be in firewood. Kilndried only means the wood was heated to dry it out so it will burn well, but it may not have reached 160 degrees Fahrenheit for 75 minutes.

Purchasers of heat-treated firewood are encouraged to look for the appropriate label indicating the wood meets the standard. Pressure-treated firewood should never be

burned.

Quarantines for individual invasive species, such as oak wilt and the Asian longhorned beetle, may further restrict the transport of firewood in specific areas.

As quarantines are lifted, expanded, or tightened, the firewood regulation will continue to remain in place.
