SOUTHWEST, NEW YORK (October 15th, 2021) – Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Program (SWNYDLFC) is hosting two pasture walks, scheduled for the last week in October. Join CCE on Monday, October 25th from 12pm – 2pm in Holland (Erie County) at Kramer Farms, LLC. Then, on Friday October 29th from 1pm – 3pm, they will be at Heaven Scent Farm in Bath (Steuben County). These programs are free to attend but registration is required to accurately plan for materials and for notification purposes.

Leading the pasture walks will be Cornell Cooperative Extension staff including: Fay Benson, former dairyman and current Cornell Small Dairy Support Specialist; Katelyn Walley-Stoll, Farm Business Management Specialist; and Amy Barkley, Livestock and Beginning Farm Specialist.

They will walk these two pasture-based dairy farms in SWNY to discuss pasture

Top Honors for High-Achieving Middle-Schoolers Nineteen outstanding scholars at Silver Creek Middle School were feted on a recent morning (Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021) during a National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony in the district auditorium.

These top Black Knights were lauded for their scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship during a socially distanced ceremony in front of their parents/guardians.

The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by high school NHS member Jade Bouvier followed by a welcome and introduction

by SCMS Principal Eleanor Payne.

“Our chapter is proud to have been inducting new members since 2018 and with today’s ceremony indicates the continuing emphasis on excellence that we represent for our school and community,” said Payne. “Throughout the year, members of our chapter serve as role models for other students. We hope this will serve to remind you

of the standard of excellence you are charged with as a member of one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious student’s recognition programs.”

After the overview of the five components of membership of the NJHS, the inductees recited the NJHS pledge.

Yanna Mott discussed scholarship, Riley Herling talked about service, Jade Bouvier gave an overview of leadership, Tabitha Shevlin went into detail about character and Karissa Buchanan defined citizenship.

The inductees were then introduced individually and presented with pins and certificates while remarks by staff were read aloud by cur-

rent NHS members.

THE VITAL ROLE OF A CANCER SUPPORT NETWORK The moment a person is diagnosed with cancer can elicit a variety of emotions. Fear of what’s to come is a common reaction to such a diagnosis, and some people may feel alone upon learning they have cancer. But no cancer patient should face their diagnosis and treatment alone. In fact, a strong support network can be vital to patients’ recoveries.

According to Weill Cornell Medicine, recent changes in the healthcare industry have shifted the burden of care from the hospital to the home. That underscores the importance of a strong support network. Many of the challenges cancer patients face in the months after diagnosis will be new, and patients can expect a range of emotions.

According to Breast Cancer Now, a charitable organization that funds one-third of breast cancer research in the United Kingdom, women may experience emotions such as shock, anger, disbelief, anxiety, and sadness after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Having loved ones there to help them make sense of those emotions and stay positive as they navigate their way through the treatment process is essential.

In addition to providing emotional support, loved ones of breast cancer patients may need to take on additional roles as they help their friends or family members face the challenges that lay ahead.

Because of the industry changes noted by Weill Cornell Medicine, cancer caregivers and support networks may need to prepare themselves to take on the following roles, each of which is vital to cancer patients’ survival.

- Monitor the disease: Support networks may need to keep track of how their loved ones’ disease is progressing and if there are any complications from treatment.

- Manage symptoms: Breastcancer.org notes that

treatment causes severe side effects in many women. Such side effects may include nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, pain, arm swelling, shortness of breath, and skin irritation. Thankfully, most of these side effects can be treated.

In addition, Breastcancer.org notes that most side effects ease up after treatment is completed. In the meantime, support networks may need to help patients manage those symptoms, performing a host of tasks to make their loved ones’ lives easier. For example, patients experiencing shortness of breath may be incapable of performing chores around the house. In such instances, members of a support network can tackle those chores until their loved one bounces back.

- Administer medication: Breast cancer patients may be too overwhelmed to handle their own medications, so support networks can take over this important responsibility for them.

- Assist with personal care: Some patients may experience fatigue after treatment. In such instances, support networks can help patients maintain their personal hygiene.

Support networks can be vital to helping cancer patients overcome their disease and navigate their way through successful treatment regimens.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted 988 as a new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline, starting July 16, 2022. Customers must continue to dial 1-800-273-TALK to reach the Lifeline until July 16, 2022.

In order for 988 to work in the 716 area code, 10-digit local dialing must first be implemented.

What will be the new dialing procedure?

To complete all local calls, you will now need to dial area code + telephone number. This applies to all calls within your area code that are currently dialed with seven digits.

Who will be affected?

Anyone with a telephone number from your area code will need to make this change from 7-digit local dialing to 10-digit local dialing.

When will the change begin?

Beginning October 27, 2021, you must dial 10-digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only 7-digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be com-

pleted as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.

Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route your call to National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.

What will you need to do?

In addition to changing the way you dial local calls, all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that are programmed to complete calls to 7-digit local numbers will need to be reprogrammed to complete calls to 10-digit numbers. Some examples are life safety systems or medical monitoring devices, PBXs, fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates, speed dialers, mobile or other wireless phone contact lists, call forwarding settings, voicemail services and other similar functions. Be sure to check your website, personal and business stationery, advertising materials, personal and business checks, contact information, your personal or pet ID tags, and other such items to ensure the area code is included.

What will remain the same?

Your telephone number, including current area code, will not change.

The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the dialing change.

What is a local call now will remain a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed.

You will continue to dial 1+ area code + telephone number for all long distance calls.

You can still dial just three digits to reach 711 (relay services) and 911 (emergency services).

Any 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, or 811 services available in your community can still be reached by dialing their three-digit codes.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can still be reached by dialing 1-800-273TALK (8255).

of still life and clothed figures, these workshops are designed to expand your creativity by drawing from life. Southtowns artist/instructor Jennifer Koury will demonstrate use of varying line weights and value washes. Participants will be instructed and encouraged to combine several different

In order for 988 to work in the 716 area code, 10-digit local dialing must first be implemented.

What will be the new dialing procedure?

To complete all local calls, you will now need to dial area code + telephone number. This applies to all calls within your area code that are currently dialed with seven digits.

Who will be affected?

Anyone with a telephone number from your area code will need to make this change from 7-digit local dialing to 10-digit local dialing.

When will the change begin?

Beginning October 27, 2021, you must dial 10-digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only 7-digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be com-

pleted as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.

Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route your call to National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.

What will you need to do?

In addition to changing the way you dial local calls, all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that are programmed to complete calls to 7-digit local numbers will need to be reprogrammed to complete calls to 10-digit numbers. Some examples are life safety systems or medical monitoring devices, PBXs, fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates, speed dialers, mobile or other wireless phone contact lists, call forwarding settings, voicemail services and other similar functions. Be sure to check your website, personal and business stationery, advertising materials, personal and business checks, contact information, your personal or pet ID tags, and other such items to ensure the area code is included.

What will remain the same?

Your telephone number, including current area code, will not change.

The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the dialing change.

What is a local call now will remain a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed.

You will continue to dial 1+ area code + telephone number for all long distance calls.

You can still dial just three digits to reach 711 (relay services) and 911 (emergency services).

Any 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, or 811 services available in your community can still be reached by dialing their three-digit codes.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can still be reached by dialing 1-800-273TALK (8255).

Artists and would-be artists alike are invited to explore new art techniques in a series of upcoming drawing classes. Springville Center for the Arts is offering a weekly multimedia drawing excursion inside Art’s Café dining area.

Using a combination

of still life and clothed figures, these workshops are designed to expand your creativity by drawing from life. Southtowns artist/instructor Jennifer Koury will demonstrate use of varying line weights and value washes. Participants will be instructed and encouraged to combine several different

Gowanda Sports Report

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity football team was at Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Oct. 15 for a non-league game. Gowanda ran up a 26-0 lead by halftime. From there, they were able to roll on to a 48-32 victory. Five players scored for Gowanda on the night. Quarterback Maddox Browning went 11/13 through the air for 307 yards and four touchdowns.

He also had a rushing touchdown with 12 carries for 81 yards.Receivers scoring for Gowanda were Noah Vogtli (five receptions/180 yards/2 TD) and Noah Geiger (four receptions/132 yards/2 TD).

Harlee Conklin led the Gowanda rushing attack with 13 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown. Gavin Phillips had a single carry for 30 yards and a touchdown. The Gowanda defense was led by Aiden Ackley who had 9.5 tackles. Browning also figured prominently on defense with 8.5 tackles.

“We were able to get things done through the air and on the ground,” said Gowanda coach Tyler Thompson. “Being able to get things done through the air really made us a multi-faceted team.” Prior to the game, Thompson had indicated that the team was the healthiest it had been in the better part of a month, but they had not yet escaped the injury issues that have followed them for the past several weeks.

Both Phillips and Geiger left the game hurt that night.

The Gowanda Varsity girls volleyball team opened their week at Silver Creek on Oct. 11. Gowanda won the match in three straight games, 25-13, 25-19 and 2516. Gowanda was led by Jill Gernatt with 17 assists, two kills, one ace and one dig.

Other players of note include Cameron Nagel (six digs, three aces, two kills and one assist), Gao:wisa:s Stevens (four kills, three aces and three digs), Holland Browning (five digs, two aces and one kill), Mary Denea (five aces, two kills and one dig), Ella Luther (seven digs) and Hailey Fort (three kills, one ace and one dig).

The team hosted Salamanca on Oct. 15. The first game of that match remained close up to a 5-3 early Gowanda lead. With the score tied at 5, Gowanda went on an 8-point run to 13-5. They slowly expanded that lead to a 25-10 win.

In game two, Salamanca had an early spurt that had them up 4-2. That grew to 10-5 before Gowanda began to mount a comeback, eventually tying the game at 10.

The score would continue to tied through 14-14. Though progress was slow, Gowanda continued to expand the gap to an eventual 25-19 win.

Gowanda was up 2-0 in the match and game three was skipped. Officially, it was recorded as a 3-0 match win with game three showing as 25-0.

The Gowanda/Pine Valley Varsity boys soccer team played Cassadaga Valley/Falconer on Oct. 13. CV/F scored nine minutes into the game for the only score in the opening half. G/PV’s Wayne Libby scored ten minutes into the second half to tie the game. Noah Frontuto was credited with an assist. Two minutes later, CV/F scored to go back up 2-1, the final score.

The team hosted Salamanca/Cattaraug us-Little Valley on Oct. 14. G/PV’s Matthew Hostetter made the first score with assist by Jack Sheldon.Midway through the half, the combo of Libby and Frontuto put G/PV up 2-0. After S/C-LV’s only score of the game at 36:50, Libby went on to score 10 seconds later, with three minutes left in the first half, and then again three minutes into the second half. Assists on those goals to Hostetter and Frontuto. A little more than midway into the final half, G/PV scored one final goal. This time it was Brendan Butcher with assist by Christopher King. That left the final score at 5-1.

The boys closed out their week with a non-league game Oct. 16 at Jamestown.

Two minutes into the game, Noah Frontuto put G/PV out in front with assist to Darwin Westlund. Twelve min-

utes later, Westlund scored moving the score to 2-0 with Ryan Waterman getting the assist. Westlund scored again just short of halfway through the final half with assist to Owen Ward. The 3-0 score stood until there was 10 minutes left in the game when Jamestown scored to spoil the shutout.

The Gowanda/Pine Valley Varsity girls soccer team hosted Ellicottville on Oct. 12. Down 5-0, G/PV’s Rhianna Bibeau scored in the last minute in the first half.

The teams would score twice each in the second half for a 7-3 final score. Scoring the final two goals of the game for G/PV were Margaret King with assist by Mattison Cadle and Alexis Tunstall with assist by Sarah Kruszka.

The girls soccer team was at Randolph on Oct. 13 to close out their regular season. This time they found themselves down 3-0 in the first half followed by a scoreless second half.

The Gowanda cross country teams competed at Falconer along with Olean on Oct. 12. As a team, the boys finished second with a score of 47. Falconer was first with a score of 21 and Olean third with 56. The girls team results saw Gowanda with a score of 47, Falconer at 26 and Olean at 58. Top finisher for the Gowanda girls was Calie Hudson, 2nd overall, at 23:00. Kailyn Farner had a personal best time of 23:50.

The Gowanda trap team released their complete Week 2 results with Gowanda still in first place as a team. Team members Tyler Smith ranked 7th, TJ Ackley at 19th and Logan Lukonaitis at 23rd in the state rankings.

In addition to these shooters, other team members ranked in the conference for Week 2 were Daniel Humphrey (12th), Adam Golden (12th), Daniel Humphrey (16th), Sam Larimore (21st) and Alex Pachucinski (24th).

In Week 3, the team greatly expanded their hold on first place, scoring 875. The team scored 756.50 in week one and 755.50 in week two.

Signs your gutters are in need of repair Fall is a great time to tackle projects around the house.

The weather each fall allows homeowners to make improvements to their homes’ exteriors without worrying about extreme heat or cold, while interior projects like painting are made easier because homeowners can open the windows to allow for proper ventilation.

Fall also marks a great time to prepare for upcoming projects that can make winter work that much easier. For example, fall is a great time to take stock of your gutters so you can address any issues before leaves begin to fall or the first snowstorm touches down.

Compromised gutters can contribute to water issues in basements and adversely affect a home’s foundation if not addressed immediately, so it behooves homeowners to learn the signs that gutters are in need of repair or replacement.

- Gutters hanging off the home: Gutters were once installed predominantly with spikes. However, many industry professionals now install gutters with hanger brackets. Why the change?

Spikes loosen over time, leading to the gutters hanging off the home. That can contribute to serious issues if left untreated. Gutters hanging off the home need not

necessarily be replaced, but rather secured to the home, ideally with hanger brackets instead of spikes. Brackets hook into the front of the gutter and are then screwed into the fascia of a home. A professional who specializes in gutter repair can perform this task relatively quickly, and it’s an inexpensive yet highly effective solution.

- Gutter separation: Gutters that are no longer fastened together can leak and contribute to issues that affect the home’s foundation, siding and appearance.

Clogs and the accumulation of debris can cause gutters to separate because they are not designed to hold too much weight. Replacement of separated gutters may or may not be necessary depending on how big the problem is and the condition of the existing gutters. If replacement is not necessary, separated gutters may be remedied by securing the joints, another relatively simple and inexpensive fix.

- Peeling exterior paint: Paint that appears to be peeling off of your home may indicate that water is seeping over the edge of the gutter closest to your home.

When that happens, water is coming down the side of the house, causing the paint to peel. In such instances, replacing the gutters is often necessary.
