Public to get a peek at Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater April 19

“Not much has changed,” Harris said. “That is the true hallmark of preservation.

Seats are in place, original carpeting has been duplicated, murals and ornate plaster have been cleaned and restored and the beautiful deep, burgundy curtains have been hung.”

Harris and the board of Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater know there is more to do before the restoration project is complete, but are eager to welcome the public “to see all the progress that has been made and to hear our plans for the future.”

Visitors are asked to wear a mask and social distance during your tour of the theater.

“Everything has been delayed by COVID,” Harris said. The iconic Hollywood Theater marquee that is being restored with LED lights was delayed when the Chinese plant that made the sockets was told to make personal protective equipment due to the pandemic.

Now, the marquee is expected to be reinstalled by early summer, Harris said.

It’s too hard to predict a date

GOWANDA — The Historic Hollywood Theater on the village’s Main Street will celebrate its 95th birthday on April 19 with tours open to the public as the decades-old theater preservation project nears an end.

The nearly $5 million restoration of the movie theater, built in 1926 by Richard Wilhelm, was begun in 1997 after the building was damaged by water. The theater had closed in 1992. The Gernatt Family purchased the property and donated the building “For decades, board members have been restoring the theater one historic phase at a time,” said Deb Harris, grant and project administrator. “Paying close attention to detail, the theater looks and feels just the way it did in 1926.”

It is the only theater in the county to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The guided tours will take place from 4 to 6 p.m.

There are 660 seats on the floor of the theater, slightly fewer than the original seats, Harris said. The aisle stands were able to be used — so the aisles look the same — but the seats were duplicated, if somewhat wider. More than 200 seats are in the balcony.

When Harris turns up the theater lights, the depth of the restoration work is apparent. It probably hasn’t looked this nice since the 1970s. The dome in the center of the ceiling changes colors. Murals on either side of the stage have been lovingly restored. The deep burgundy color of the stage curtains, which had to be custom-dyed, set off the entire room.

“This is breathtaking,” she said. “We’re on the 10 yard line” as far as the project goes. So far, the Gowanda Area Redevelopment Corp., and later Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater Ltd., has received grants and raised and spent more than $4.5 million. That doesn’t count the matching funds and

Gowanda increased their lead again, now to 2016. With the score at 23-21, Randolph pulled again to within a single point. An errant Randolph serve put Gowanda back up by two at 24-22. While the Cardinals managed to win the next point, they could not take back-to-back points and

The Gowanda volleyball team got things underway on March 30 hosting the Falconer Golden Falcons in a non-league game. In game one, Falconer opened up an initial 3-0 lead only to have Gowanda come back and pull ahead 5-4. The Golden Falcons tied the score at 5 before the Panthers scored the next three points. That production was matched by Falconer to re-tie the game at 8 points each. A final Gowanda push brought them to within a point of Falconer at 18-17. The Golden Falcons answered running up 7 straight points to win the first game 25-18. While Falconer scored the first point in the second game, Gowanda quickly surged to take a 4-1 lead. The Golden Falcons battled back to tie the score at 5 before pulling into an 11-7 advantage. Gowanda answered by shrinking that to 11-10. Falconer pushed back moving their lead to 19-13. The Panthers slowly clawed their way back again to eventually tie the game at 24. After several fiercely contested points, Falconer finally succeeded in scoring the back-to-back points needed to claim a 28-26 win. Down two games to none, Gowanda jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in game three. Falconer eventually managed to tie the score at 6 points. The score would be tied from 7 through 11 before the Golden Falcons were able to finally take the lead. They went on to stretch that lead to 17-12.

Their advantage wavered between three and five points before Gowanda closed to within two at 21-19. Falconer scored three of the next four points to win the game 25-20 and the match 3-0.

The next day, Gowanda hosted Randolph in their first league competition.

Gowanda started out the first game running up a 6-0 score. Randolph came right back to tie the score at 6. The lead would go back and forth before the Cardinals moved into a 15-11 lead. They outscored Gowanda 10-3 from that point to win the first game 25-15. In game two, the Cardinals took an early 3-1 lead. The Panthers then tied the game at three and surged into the lead. Gowanda took an 8-point advantage at 14-6 and maintained that margin until the score was 17-9. The Panthers took the next three points moving the score to 20-9 on the way to a 25-12 win in game two. With the match tied one game each, game three started out very tight. The lead would swing a point or two in favor of either team while standing tied at 2, 4 and 9 points before Randolph moved out to a 15-10 lead. Two Zoey Kota unreturned serves led the way to Gowanda closing the gap to 15-13. The Panthers kept the deficit to two or three points until the score was 18-16 in favor of Randolph.

The Cardinals nailed down the next six points taking game three 24-16. The match now stood at Randolph 2 and Gowanda 1. The Panthers needed to win the next two games if they were to win the match. Gowanda took the early lead in game four and eventually increased that to 8-3. The Cardinals worked back to within two points at 10-8. Gowanda continued re-building their cushion to eventually move the score to 22-14. While Randolph had managed to tie at two points each early on, they were never able to take a lead in SHOP the game. Borrello: $212B state budget driven by ‘progressive activists’

State Sen. George Borrello said New York state’s $212 billion budget for the new fiscal year is an “example of what happens when government spending and policy is dictated by progressive activists.”

Borrello, R-Sunset Bay, said he voted against the final version of the budget because its level of spending and increase in taxes isn’t needed after New York was allocated $12.5 billion in the federal American Rescue Plan and the state will see higher-than-expected revenues.

Gowanda Recreation Spring Programming Begins The Village of Gowanda Recreation Department will begin their spring programming with an adult recreational softball league and co-ed youth soccer. Both programs will be held at Gateway Park on Palmer Street and are free of charge.

The Softball league began on April 6 and will continue once a week on Tuesday nights through the end of November. Players must be at least 18 years of age to participate. The games begin at 6 pm each week. All

equipment is provided by the Recreation Department.

The youth co-ed soccer program for students in grades 1-8 that reside in the Gowanda Central School District will begin on Monday, April 26. The program will run for five consecutive Monday nights through May 24. Students should bring their own water and wear rubber spikes if they have them. Organist Dennis James will bring his organ to the theater for a series of silent films to raise funds to restore the theater’s 1923 Wurlitizer organ, Harris said. On Oct. 9, James will play the organ to the silent film Phantom of the Opera with Bela Legusi.

Theater audiences will hear all this through a stateof-the-art Bose sound system, Harris pointed out.

One thing they plan to bring back to the theater this year is Theater Camp, Harris said. Out of necessity, it was held virtually last year.

“They are anxious to get in here this year with curtains that work,” she smiled behind her mask.

“I didn’t want the theater’s 95th birthday to go by without showing the public how good she looks,” Harris said. “Visually, it’s just so stunning. She deserves to be celebrated.”

CA BOCES psychologist earns honor from NY group OLEAN– Michael Wales, a school psychologist for Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES, is the School Psychologist of the Year for Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Allegany counties through the New York State Association of School Psychologists.

Wales, whose career in school psychology spans more than 30 years, is completing his sixth year with CA BOCES, primarily serving the Scio and Whitesville school districts.

He evaluates students for learning and behavioral needs, conducts pre-school screening assessments, provides counseling to students and serves on district committees on special education and accommodating student needs. He also helps school

districts collect data regarding students’ academic and mental wellness needs and provides professional development presentations to teachers and school support staff on a variety of topics.

Prior to joining CA BOCES, Wales was a school psychologist and CSE chairperson for a Steuben County school district for 25 years.

He has been an adjunct instructor for the Graduate Division of Counseling & School Psychology at Alfred University for 25 years, while also teaching undergraduate psychology courses at Alfred State and Empire State colleges.

“I am grateful to NYASP for their support as well as CA BOCES and the school districts I serve for giving

me the opportunity to continue to fulfill the purpose of school psychology,” Wales said.

Broadband Data Collection Consumer Information In today’s world, it is critical that families and businesses across the country have access to broadband. As work, education, healthcare, and many other activities have moved online, broadband is no longer nice to have. It’s need to have for everyone.

In order to better determine where high speed internet services are currently unavailable, they need precise, accurate, and up-to-date broadband mapping data.

The FCC’s Broadband Data Task Force is developing the necessary tools to gather this information. This is a complex, data-driven effort that will involve building new systems, process, and supporting materials.

These new tools will enable the FCC to create maps that display fixed broadband availability for individual locations and mobile broadband availability with more accuracy. The program will also provide a way for consumers, as well as Tribal, state, and local governments, to challenge and improve the accuracy of the maps by sharing data with the FCC. More accurate maps will enable broadband funding programs to

target support for broadband services to the areas most in need.

The Commission is working hard to develop these new tools as quickly as possible.

1 cup chopped green onions 2 cups heavy cream 9 ounces of your favorite pasta Combine the seasoning mix ingredients thoroughly in a small bowl.

Heat olive oil in a 12-inch skillet over high heat. When oil is very hot, add the prosciutto, cauliflower, mushrooms, carrots, and zucchini. Add the butter and, as it melts, stir in the garlic and the seasoning mix. Stir in asparagus tips or snow peas and green onions. Stir well and cook just until the vegetables are crisp-tender, about 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the cream and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to medium and cook until the sauce has thickened a bit, about 3 minutes.

Cook the pasta according to package directions; drain.

Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, toss well and remove from the heat. Serve immediately.

IN OTHER NEWS, the Gowanda Panthers football season opened April 1 amid snow flurries that covered the ground.

Gowanda got the ball first, but after bobbling the opening kickoff, the Panthers were starting out on their own 11. They were able only to pick up 21 yards to the 32 before being forced to punt. A low snap on the kick left gave the Gowanda kicker no option but to just cover the ball. Eden also had a rough first series. A penalty on the first play left them 1st and 15 from the 28 to start out. After gaining only three yards, they would turn the ball back over to Gowanda on downs. Four plays later, the Panthers failed on 4th and 1, giving Eden another shot from the 34.

Eden closed out the quarter with a drive that went one play into the 2nd quarter. This time they would fail on 4th and goal from the 7. Another Gowanda four and out brought them to a 4th and four punt from the 7. An 18-yard punt that sailed out of bounds at the 27 gave Eden another great drive start. They would only gain a net 2 yards before giving the ball back to Gowanda. Three penalties more than offset the gains the Panthers made in that series. They were forced to

punt again, this time on 4th and 31. Eden got the ball on the Gowanda 41 and threw a touchdown pass on the next play. An extra point kick gave them a 7-0 lead with 3:21 left in the first half. After the following kick-off, Gowanda was starting out on their own 35. On their first play, a Gowanda pass attempt was batted up and back towards

the quarterback. An Eden rusher who had been racing towards the Gowanda quarterback was in perfect position to grab the batted ball.

Already deep in the Panthers backfield, it was an easy run to the end zone. Eden was up 14-0 with 3:15 still left in the half. The next Gowanda series was just two plays old when a missed handoff from quarterback to runner

Starting on the Gowanda 37, Eden had three straight incomplete passes before connecting for a touchdown on 4th down. With 1:41 in the half, it was now 21-0. A kickoff return from the 25 to the 40 set the Panthers up for their last shot in the half.

This time, they made steady gains mostly on the ground.

With 35 seconds left in the half, Gowanda crossed the 50-yard line with a 15-yard run. That was the first time in the game that the ball had been on the Eden side of the field. The Panthers got as far as the 12 before time ran out on a 2nd down play.

Eden got the ball first in the second half driving from their own 42 to score again. This time on a 1st down run from the four.

Gowanda managed to pick up four first downs in their next series. The highlight of that drive had been a 4th down pass from the Eden 42 that was deflected up into the air before being grabbed by the Gowanda receiver at the 15. On the next play, a Panthers 4-yard run ended with another lost fumble. Eden, starting on the 11, would again go four and out gaining just seven yards. The Panthers had the ball on the Eden 18. On third and eight, the Gowanda quarterback ran straight down the field to the four before another lost fumble ended a Gowanda drive. An subsequent Eden drive started from the 4 ended with a quick kick from the 3 on 3rd down. Gowanda’s last possession started at midfield and ended on the Eden 38. With only 1:28 left in the game, Eden was happy to just run out the clock to close out their win.

NYSEG, RG&E customers reminded to call 811 before digging

SCA awarded funding to complete theater renovations The Springville Center for the Arts has been awarded funding to complete the renovations to the Carol Mongerson Theater – the sanctuary of the former Baptist Church.

In order to utilize this funding, they need everyone to be informed and part of the process. They are asking all members, volunteers, and active patrons to attend a meeting on Wednesday, April 14 at 7:00p.m.

You may attend in person at the theater, social distancing will apply, or join online via a Zoom meeting.

April is National Safe Digging Month and with warmer weather approaching, New York State Gas & Electric (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) remind homeowners and contractors starting any projects that involve excavation or digging to have underground utilities marked to prevent damage.
