Gowanda holds 135th commencement Friday

Thursdays, Downtown returns to Springville SPRINGVILLE — The village of Springville will again be fi lled with music when the Thursdays, Downtown concert series returns on July 1.

Heritage Park, located on Factory Street, will set the stage with live music, local vendors, food trucks and SPARK! in the Park free art making activity beginning at 7 p.m. Opening acts begin at 6:30.

A wide range of music

will be presented this year.

July 1 will open with Artsapalooza!, a touring theatrical show by Springville Center for the Arts, followed by local favorite Springville Jazz Orchestra.

July 8 brings country music by The Steam Donkeys. July 15 features Buffalo Silver Band lead by local musician and conductor Bill Cocca.

Indie folkgrass group Smilo & The Ghost will per-

form on July 22. Fans of roots rock will enjoy Chris Ra ie & the New Rebels on July 29.

Tango fans will enjoy Buffalo Tango Orkestra on Aug. 5. Bring your dancing shoes on Aug. 12 as Rose & The Bros bring zydeco to please all ages. The fi nale will feature the internationally known Slavic Soul Party! on Aug. 19.

Gowanda Sports Report

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The No. 4 Gowanda Panthers Varsity baseball team hosted No. 5 Randolph June 21 for a Section VI Class C quarter-final playoff game June 21.

Gowanda was up 4-2 a er the 1st inning. Randolph rallied in the 2nd, but were still outscored by Gowanda moving the score to 9-5 a er two. The Panthers fi nally managed to shut down the visitors in the top of the 3rd before adding further to their lead. Runs scored by Drew Shull, Gavin Phillips and Blake Herman put Gowanda way out in front 12-5. Each team gained single runs in the next inning. The margin remained the same into a 15-8 fi nal.

The next stop in the playoffs took Gowanda to No. 1 Clymer/Sherman/Panama at Panama on June 23. The

hosts came into the contest boasting an 11-0 record including a playoff win over Frewsburg. The game was scoreless until the 5th inning when Gowanda’s Tyler Smith got things going with a deep le field double.

A Maddox Browning hit that was misplayed at 1st allowed Smith to score. CSP answered by tying the score at one. John Ondus broke the tie in the next inning with

a deep le home run on one out. Gowanda added a pair of runs in the 7th for a 4-1 win.

Gowanda moved on to face No. 2 Portville on July 26 in the fi nals. Like the previous match-up, Portville came into the game unbeaten at 13-0. A er two scoreless innings, Gowanda managed to pull ahead 2-1 in the 3rd. Portville tightened

Salutatorian Zoey Kota remarked about the year just passed and how the class had persisted through every guideline and regulation set down by the CDC and Governor Andrew Cuomo to a¢end school.

“Today we are taking the fi rst major steps towards being independent and, hopefully, functioning members of society,” she said.

Valedictorian Kayla Forthman urged her fellow graduates to take a moment to catch their breaths, look around and enjoy this moment because it will be gone in an instant.

She spoke about how fast the school years had flown by and told the class she hopes this

moment is everything they hoped for.

Forthman also thanked her family for all their help and support along the way.

The class was urged to remember “we are not the COVID class” adding we “are the Class of 2021” and “the world isn’t perfect.”

David Smith, assistant principal for grades 5-12 and Gowanda Mayor, recognized the Class of 2021 and the seven members of the class who were headed into the military, along with those in a¢endance who were past or present military were recognized.

Smith quoted the lyrics of Semisonic’s “Closing Time,” noting that he knows this class as well as anyone having been with them from middle school watching them grow and mature.

“You have a choice when faced with obstacles, you can leave your life a mess or turn the mess into a message,” he said. “You can either be bi¢er or be¢er, not both.”

To close the ceremony, Class President Ashton Francis and Treasurer Emma Luther led the class in the Turning of the Tassels.

The score stood at 4-2 into the m bo om of the fi nal inning as -Portville loaded the bases on two outs. In dramatic fash-ion, Gowanda relief pitcher Gavin Phillips struck out the next Portville ba er to finalize the win. Pitcher John Ondus was credited with tthe win, accumulating 11 rstrikeouts against 3 hits and 3 walks. Ondus also led the Gowanda offense ba ing 3 for 4 with 1 run and 2 RBIs. Scoring the other Gowanda runs were John Smuda, Drew Shull and Blake Herman.

June 21 was a big so ball day at Gowanda. A line of heavy thunderstorms that rolled through the area in the early a ernoon made several so ball fields unusable that a ernoon. Both Fredonia

and Springville had their home playoff games relocated to Gowanda, which has a new artificial surface. Fredonia faced Royalton-Hartland at 4:30 followed by Springville taking on Olean at 6 p.m. Gowanda’s Varsity so ball team also benefited as their away game at Chautauqua Lake was played in Gowanda at 8 p.m. Fredonia picked up an 11-0 win in their game. In a game that was tied at 1 in the 5th inning, a late Olean surge carried them past Springville, 11-3.

In the nightcap, Gowanda’s leadoff ba er, Addison Kota, started out on 1st base a er being hit by a pitch. She reached 3rd on a Cameron Nagel bunt and came home on a Zoey Kota sacrifice fly.

In the bo om of the 1st inning, Chautauqua Lake batters were retired 1-2-3 leaving the score 1-0 a er one. In the 2nd inning, Chautauqua Lake started their move by striking out all three Gowanda ba ers. They then picked up two runs of their own. A er a scoreless 3rd inning, Chautauqua Lake got the bases loaded with two singles and a walk on one out. All three of those runners would score, bringing the score to 5-1 at the end of

the 4th inning. A er picking up two outs in the 5th, Gowanda started to mount a comeback. Holland Browning, who had been called up from the JVs for the game, walked. Then Addison Kota hit a double that brought Browning home. Kota, in turn, scored on a Cameron Nagel single. That brought Gowanda closer at 5-3. A er a scoreless 6th inning and again on two outs, Gowanda was in the same situation that spawned the previous surge. Addison Kota was at bat. She pounded a shot straight up the center of the field. It headed straight for the pitcher like a bullet. The pitcher reflexively moved to block the shot and the ball stuck in her glove ending the

game.

CCAA East 2 has named Tyler Thompson Coach of the Year and Zoey Kota as Player of the Year. Kota also made the 1st Team All-Stars along with her sister, Addison, and Abby Valone. Ella Luther, Cameron Nagel and Wassy Stevens were named to the 2nd Team and Honorable Mention went to Hailey Fort.

Sports Report continued from 3 0-15 on the season. Gowanda wasted no time taking control of the game as Miya Scanlan scored just 1:46 into the game on Gowanda’s fi rst venture into Salamanca territory. Two minutes later, Scanlan’s goal total was four.

By 7:02 into the game, the score was 9-0 and Chloe Luther, Scotia Snyder and Crissa Scanlan also had scored

for Gowanda. One and a half minutes later, Salamanca finally got on the board. They would score again just over two minutes later as the score moved to 16-2 at the end of the fi rst half. The second half saw Gowanda add four scores to three for Salamanca for a 20-5 fi nal.

Leaders for Gowanda were Miya Scanlan (7 goals, 3 assists), Chloe Luther (5 goals, 2 assists) and Crissa Scanlan (3 goals). Marla Warrior had three of Salamanca’s five scores.

The win brought Gowanda into a fi nals match-up at No. 1 Eden. Gowanda wasted no time as Miya Scanlan scored just 28 seconds into

Following that presentation, the Gowanda team was presented with the championship plaque and banner. Each member of the Gowanda team also received t-shirts indicating they were Sectional champions.
