MAYVILLE, NY – Silver Creek Central School recently donated to the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County to assist the Alliance with its efforts to raise awareness about suicide prevention and support services available in our region.

Coming together as a school, staff at Silver Creek Central School use a long-standing tradition and raise money to donate in a variety of ways.

Staff proclaim one day of each week as Casual Day where they collect and donate money to wear casual clothes in place of professional work attire.

When speaking with Shannon Karcz, middle school secretary and coordinator of Casual Day, she said, “Many of us end up wearing Buffalo Bills’ clothes, but some also show Black Knight pride by wearing school colors.” This Black Knight pride encompasses the idea of giving to others.

As a school we are aware of the mental health needs of the community and

often times the money goes to a family in need of financial support.”

This particular casual day occurred on September 10, 2021 during Suicide Prevention Month. In true Black Knight pride, the staff decided to use the money raised on this day and donate it to the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County.

Carri Raynor, Coordinator of the Alliance said, “It was really special to open this donation as it was unexpected and opened on Giving Tuesday.

These acts of generosity embody the mission of the alliance and contribute to efforts that support families who survive a loss. There are many ways to make a difference in our community and we thank Silver Creek Central for doing their part. We know that stigma is a barrier for many and one of the ways we can reduce fear is by normalizing help seeking by having authentic conversations around mental health. Reach out to loved

ones, friends and neighbors and ask them how they are doing. There are many resources in our community that can be healing and hopeful and we encourage everyone to check in on themselves and others.”

If you are struggling from the loss of a loved one to suicide, there is a local support group every second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Western New York Independent Living names Lafayette Williams “Employee of the Year” A disability human services and civil rights advocacy organization that employs over 2,100 individuals in 14 Counties in New York State, Western New York Independent Living, Inc. (WNYIL), has named New York Connects Independent Living Outreach Specialist Lafayette Williams as the recipient of the Joanne Wozniak Employee of the Year Award for 2021.

At a gathering of staff, volunteers, and friends of the WNYIL Family of Agencies, earlier this year, New York Connects Region 1 Coordinator Amanda Pinter announced the Award with this tribute to Mr. William’s selfless efforts: “Over the last year, this staff member was determined to make public education a priority to ensure consumers knew we were still open and here to help. When face-toface tabling events were not an option [due to the pandemic], they hung flyers and put brochures in places people were still going -- like groceries stores and clinics. This staff member not only made sure people knew about us but was also dedicated to ensuring their

consumers had what they needed. Weekly check-in’s if necessary and delivering loan closet items to help with whatever issues arose. Word-of-mouth traveled across the community and soon people were stopping this staff member in the grocery store, asking for help. They stayed positive and true to our mission this past year. With that said, I am proud to introduce the 2021 Employee of the Year, Lafayette Williams.”

A member of the Beaver Clan in the Seneca Nation of Indians. Mr. Williams resides on the Cattaraugus territory, and is the first Native American to receive WNYIL’s Employee of the Year Award.

The Award was named for Joanna Wozniak, who was one of the Agency’s senior Counselors when she retired, shortly before passing away, a few years ago.

Randolph Mammoth returns to Cattaraugus County Museum The Randolph Mammoth, one of the most complete examples of its species ever discovered in New York state, returns to the Ca araugus County Museum and Research Library as the centerpiece of a new fossil exhibit.

On the a ernoon of May 19, 1934, workers using a power scraper to dig a pond

at the State Fish Hatchery near Randolph made a startling discovery. They unearthed what was later identified as the skull and tusks of a Columbian mammoth; a particularly rare fi nd for our region. In the days that followed, much excitement was generated in the area as thousands of locals flocked to

the dig site to witness the unearthing.

Dr. C.A. Hartnagel, the assistant state paleontologist sent to Randolph to oversee the excavation, stated at the time that it was the fi rst fi nd of its kind in the state and of great scientific importance.

Celebrations continued from 1 Melody and Ally, got things underway performing as “Finding Dimes” in the front window of Gabel Brothers Furniture as they had for several past Christmas In Gowanda events. With a pair of speakers positioned in front of the store, the girls sang Christmas songs, along with a bit of commentary. An additional speaker, provided

by Gowanda’s Flash Falcon Sound System, was located near the Hollywood Theater allowing the music to be heard through an extended part of the downtown area.

After their performance, Melody commented that one of the event-goers mentioned he had heard them walking up the street and was surprised to see them singing live in the window. He told her that he initially “thought it was a radio broadcast”. The speaker near the theater provided recorded Christmas songs for the duration of the event.

With its marquee recently reinstalled, the Hollywood Theater was a major point of interest as a backdrop for family photos.

Besides showings of Christmas movies for children, the theater also sold chances for their Marquee Raffle and a Chinese Auction.

Winners are expected to be announced Dec. 11.

There were long lines for the horse and wagon rides operating from the parking lot on the north side of West Main Street. A similar line was seen on the south side of West Main for the police car and fire truck rides.

Over the course of the afternoon, there had been several people inquiring about the tree lighting ceremony and asking the location of Chang-Hu Park. It became apparent there were a number of visitors looking to be a part of the annual ceremony. After going through the extended period of being distanced and remote, this chance to come together as a community was something many couldn’t resist.

During the ceremony, a Gowanda high school choral group sang carols while the crowd gathered. Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce President Nick Crassi thanked those who helped to make the event possible.

Crassi informed the crowd of a structure fire that diverted some of the vehicles that would have been in the Christmas parade.

It was also noted supply chain issues had impacted to event’s fireworks finale.

The display had doubled in

price, so the display ended up being particularly expensive.

Gowanda Mayor David Smith welcomed the in-person crowd “not hiding in our homes,” complimenting the Gowanda community.

Dave Gabel, known as “Mr. Christmas” for his primary role in the Gowanda tree lighting ceremony, is the pastor at the Gowanda Assembly of God. “Last year we couldn’t meet here because of COVID,” he said. “This year we’re here together again.”

As people were heading back downtown for the Christmas parade, a couple more fire trucks, previously intended to be part of the parade, were seen heading through town covered in

Christmas lights to assist at the fire. Eventually, the remaining units left for the parade did proceed through the downtown area. With several trucks missing, there were gaps in the parade.

As each unit came though, Smith provided commentary.

Shortly after the conclusion of the parade, everyone moved to the far eastern end of West Main Street to watch the fireworks display in the sky above Cattaraugus Creek.

This old-fashioned traditional celebration of Christmas was originally started by Heather McKeever when she served as mayor of Gowanda. For the past several years, the event has been taken over by the

and shipped to Albany, where it would spend several decades on display at the State Museum.

The Randolph Mammoth is one of the most complete mammoth specimens ever found in New York State; most other mammoth material is fragmentary, o en consisting of just a tooth. It is believed to be a Columbian Mammoth, considerably rarer in our region than the Wooly Mammoth. Both tusks together weigh about 150 lbs. The skull weighs about 200 lbs. When living, the mammoth probably stood about 14 feet high at the shoulder.

In 2011, the State Museum began loaning the original tusks and a cast of the skull to museums around the state to display. It fi nally returned to Ca araugus County in 2016, where is remained on exhibit at the County Museum for nearly two years.

Now, the museum plays host to the mammoth once again, as it opens a new fossil exhibit that features specimens representing eras spanning from the Paleozoic to the Pleistocene. Several items in the new display appear courtesy of generous loans from the State Museum and the Buffalo Museum of Science.

How to reduce reliance on big-box retailers

Big-box retailers span the globe. Though WalMart, Target and Lowes may offer great deals, there’s often nothing unique about big-box stores. Proponents of Main Street also note that big-box stores can’t provide the small business charm that can make local neighborhoods special.

Balance is everything, and that even applies to shopping. Big-box retailers can feature in consumers’ shopping plans, but there’s a place for small businesses as well. The following are some strategies to reduce reliance on national chains.

• Look at the alternatives first. Shoppers may look to big-box stores because they know what to expect and are familiar with their

goods. But exploring smaller alternatives fi rst can turn up some pleasant surprises.

Take walking tours of the community and make note of which stores are available.

You might just uncover a hidden gem.

• Prioritize quality, not quantity. Big-box retailers frequently turn to foreign-made products and can offer very low prices because the huge amount of merchandise they sell enables them to negotiate lower bulk prices from suppliers. Mass production of products may result in lower-quality merchandise. Small businesses may pick and choose their stock, ve ing items before the customer even does his or her research.

• Ask for recommenda-

tions. Reach out through social media for recommendations on small businesses in the area. Find out where others are shopping and what they have to say about certain companies. You may not have certain establishments on your radar and may be pleasantly surprised at the competitive prices and outstanding service provided by local businesses.

• Shop in person. There’s no denying the convenience and all-hours capabilities of shopping online. However, it denies shoppers the experience of going into a store and browsing for products and ge ing a true feel for their sizes and quality. Modern consumers are no doubt familiar with the tedious nature of returning online

items that fell short of expectations. Such experiences are significantly less common when shopping in-store, particularly at small businesses.

• Competition keeps prices lower. Big-box retailers may offer good deals, but over time those prices may rise as national retailers command more control of the market.

A competitive marketplace encourages businesses to offer lower prices to a ract customers. By shopping a variety of stores, customers can further this healthy competition across the board.

Big-box retailers need not be ignored. However, consumers can balance their spending at big-box stores and small businesses so they do not become entirely reliant on national chains.

ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) is announcing additional Erie County COVID-19 vaccine sites. A full and updated schedule is available at www.erie.gov/vax, and appointments are strongly suggested. Everyone ages 5 years and older is eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Booster doses are strongly recommended for adults age 18 and older who completed the primary Pfizer or Moderna vaccine series at least six months ago, or received a single Johnson and Johnson vaccine at least two months ago.

Starting Tuesday, December 7 through December 30, ECDOH will offer Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines (first, second or third dose; booster doses; Pfizer pediatric doses for ages 5-11) at the following locations

from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.: Tuesdays: Delavan Grider Community Center, 877 E. Delavan Ave., Buffalo, NY 14215 Wednesdays: Chestnut Ridge Park, 6121 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Orchard Park, NY 14127 Thursdays: Como Lake Park, 2200 Como Park Blvd., Lancaster, NY 14086 Fridays: Orchard Park Fire Company, Central Station, 30 School St, Orchard Park, NY 14127 (12/10 and 12/17 only; no clinics Christmas Eve Day and New Year’s Eve Day) And, Mondays starting December 13: Ellicott Creek Park, 1 Ellicott Creek Park Drive, Tonawanda, NY 14150 These are in addition to the COVID-19 vaccine site at SUNY ECC South, open

ECDOH clinics will welcome walk-ins during the final two hours of each of these clinics.

In collaboration with Buffalo Homecare, Inc., COVID-19 vaccine is available at 490 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, NY 14202 and 5847 Transit Road in East Amherst. These sites are open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays and weekends; extended hours may be announced.

Appointments are posted at www.erie.gov/vax. Buffalo Homecare sites accept walkins until 4:30 p.m.
