SCA to host Plaster Figure Sculpture class

Spirit of Gowanda nominations due July 12 GOWANDA — Area residents have until July 12 to submit nominations for the 2021 Spirit of Gowanda awards, sponsored each year by the Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce.

Three awards — business, service and student recipients — will be honored at the annual Spirit of Gowanda awards dinner scheduled for Oct. 9 at the Gowanda Moose Club.

Nomination criteria for the business award include leadership in the business

Central School District.

While the chamber sponsors the award and ceremony, the recipients are nominated by the Gowanda community. To help select the deserving honorees, submit a wri en nomination to the Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce, including the nominee’s name, which award it’s for and a listing of their accomplishments, memberships and or other information.

Past recipients are not eligible. Only wri en nom-

SPRINGVILLE — Springville Center for the Arts is offering a two-part workshop, “Study of the Human Form: Plaster Figure Sculpture,” on July 13 and 14 from 6-8:30 p.m.

Stacey LeChevet will lead the class in discussing proportions of the human form and dynamic poses.

Students will then create a wire armature that will be used as the “skeleton” on which to build upon using additive sculpting methods with plaster.

All materials are included for $42, $38 for Springville Center for the Arts members.

Stacey LeChevet has been teaching high school art for nearly 30 years.

LeChevet took a mixed media class at Springville Center for the Arts when it was still on Main Street. It was the spark that reignited her own artist journey. Since that time she has had her work in a number of shows, and has completed a number of public murals.

FeedMore WNY aims to increase SNAP participation among older adults FeedMore WNY is expanding its efforts to assist older adults in applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – formerly known as food stamps. The hunger-relief nonprofit is one of 40 organizations throughout the country to receive a $50,000 grant from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) to enhance access to SNAP for qualifying low-income older adults through community-based outreach and enrollment initiatives.

FeedMore WNY uses NCOA’s free online BenefitsCheckUp® tool at www.BenefitsCheckUp.org to screen older adults with limited income for SNAP eligibility.

The initiative aims to help at least 40,000 older adults nationwide enroll in SNAP. “We’ve heard from older adults and our local partners that accessing and paying for food is a critical need right now,” Josh Hodges, NCOA chief customer officer, said.

“Food, on average, is the second highest household expenditure for people aged 60+, and too o en they have to stretch their food budget in order to make ends meet.

That’s where SNAP can help.”

Even before the

COVID-19 pandemic, more than 9.8 million older adults in the U.S. experienced food insecurity, meaning they lacked consistent access to adequate, nutritious food.

Today, those numbers are quickly rising. SNAP is the nation’s most effective and widest-reaching anti-hunger program. Research by Center for Budget and Policy Priorities shows that participation in SNAP reduces food insecurity overall by 30 percent, yet the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that only 48 percent of eligible older adults ages 60 and older participate in the program.

“We are proud to be part of a SNAP enrollment initiative that has the potential to help tens of thousands of low-income older adults improve their health and fi nancial security,” Lauren Merriman, FeedMore WNY SNAP outreach coordinator, said. “FeedMore WNY has a strong history of helping aging community members in need. In fact, 31,500 older adults relied on our organization for nutritious food last year. We are confident that increasing SNAP enrollment with BenefitsCheckUp® and other proven outreach methods will have a profound effect on older adults in West-

ern New York.”

FeedMore WNY has been performing outreach through its Mobile Food Pantry distributions, member food pantries and home-delivered meal sites, as well as partnering with older adult independent living complexes, COVID-19 vaccination clinics, grocery stores and other entities to reach qualifying older adults. Silver Creek Class of 2021 Graduates From hybrid to remote and masks to health screenings, it was only fi ing the Silver Creek Class of 2021 adapted one last time to celebrate the end of a year like no other.

On Friday (June 25, 2021) Black Knight graduates and their families gathered on the high school football field for the 69th annual commencement ceremony. The evening’s festivities began with a traditional processional of the 65 graduates and the National Anthem performed by the Senior Chorus.

Prior to Silver Creek High School Principal Thomas Buczkowski’s address to the crowd, Stevie Cook recited the Ganö:nyök, a traditional Seneca Opening to a ceremony.

Considering how the 2019-20 school year ended and this year began, having everyone together to celebrate one of life’s milestones was appreciated by everyone in a endance.

“I believe there isn’t another class that could have handled this situation with be er grace and dignity than we did,” said Joseph Bowers, Class of 2021 Treasurer and Valedictorian. “And dignity doesn’t come easy when all of your locker supplies get dropped off in a garbage bag on your porch!”

Levity aside, Bower reflected on the year that was and how he hopes his fellow classmates carry themselves as they move forward in life.

“Something I’ve found unbelievably fascinating is how quickly the pandemic has managed to somewhat dehumanize our interactions. How it has seemingly upset the balance of life.

We can accomplish most of our tasks with li le social interaction – from Internet shopping to drive-throughs to Zoom and Teams meetings. This trend was already establishing itself, but the pandemic exponentially modified the curve,” he said, noting Albert Einstein once said it has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity. “Can you imagine what he would say today? … There is a need for interaction, a need for kindness, a need for thoughtfulness, and a need for acceptance, and these should not be undervalued.

Thankfully, I believe that we are be er than that in our SCCS community and family. I believe we recognize the need for support and kindness. I believe we understand the value of relationships.”

Bower ended his message by challenging each of his classmates to continue to be ambassadors of positive change in the world and to lead by example and to foster kindness, thoughtfulness, and acceptance.

“The fi nal line to Albert Einstein’s quote from earlier is ‘I hope that someday, our humanity might yet surpass our technology.’ And, as a future Engineer, I couldn’t agree more,” Bower said.

Graduation speakers also included Salutatorian Ellen Decker, who asked her classmates to live every moment and enjoy doing the things they love, and Louis Pagano. A ’77 graduate of SCCS, Pagano went on to earn his master’s degree in engineering management and work for Eastman Kodak in Rochester where he served for 16 years in the technical support department. For the

past five years Pagano has worked as an executive vice president of Schulte Hospitality Group, which manages 170 hotels in the U.S. and Europe and 25 restaurants.

“There are lots of measurements on how people leave their mark on life.

What you will truly be measured on is not how much money you earned or how large your house is or how many toys you have amassed but rather the size of your heart. Did you make a difference in someone’s life?” Pagano said as he addressed the Class. “Were you a good person? Were you there when people needed you? Did you show compassion, did you lead or push through tough times? I am talking about you leaving the world a better place because of you.”

Following Mr. Pagano’s speech, Silver Creek Central School District Board of Education President Stephen Boothe presented diplomas to the graduates.

“The past 15 months have challenged my philosophy of never wishing time away,” Mr. Buczkowski said. “We wanted our lives to be normal but while we wished this to go away time was passing us by. Although we may never endure another pandemic there will be other challenges that lie ahead. Try to fi nd the positive during those times, reflect and fi gure out how you can get out of it. You do have control over your path in life.”

American Rescue Plan Grant program to strengthen outreach to businesses in underserved communities

Erie County DOH Vaccine clinics scheduled for two community events ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) will be set up two community sites in Buffalo on Saturday, July 10 to provide COVID-19 vaccinations. These clinics will offer single dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine for ages 18 and older, and the fi rst dose of the Pfi zer COVID-19 vaccine series for youth ages 12-17.

On April 2, 1821 New York State officially recognized Erie County. A er the American Revolution, the Holland Land Company purchased 3.2 million acres of land from the Seneca nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois). In 1808, New York organized the western-most land as Niagara County. By 1821, the population had increased so much that Niagara County was split. Erie County, the land south of Tonawanda Creek, consisted of ten towns and the Buffalo Creek Reservation. Today, Erie County has twenty-five towns, three cities, two tribal territories and a population of approximately 920,000.

Erie County has ties to several U.S. Presidents.

Millard Fillmore practiced law in East Aurora before serving as President. He returned to Erie County and helped establish the University of Buffalo, Buffalo General Hospital and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society. Grover Cleveland practiced law in Buffalo before becoming Erie County Sheriff, Buffalo Mayor and Governor of New York. He married Buffalo’s Frances Folsom.

In 1901, President William McKinley was assassinated at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo and, on September 14 of that year, Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in at the Wilcox Mansion as the nation’s twenty-sixth President.

Once heavily-forested frontier, the region changed as the Erie Canal brought prosperity and made the Niagara Frontier one of the largest shipping and rail centers in the country. Erie County is home to numerous inventors and inventions such as the Ball Jar, Barca Lounger and air conditioning all originated in Buffalo. Wilson Greatbatch developed the implantable pacemaker in Clarence, and Bell Aircra was one of the nation’s largest suppliers of aircra during WW II. Erie County boasts many major works by both local and national architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, H.H. Richardson, E.B. Green, William Wicks, and Louise Bethune. Famous writers like F. Sco Fitzgerald, Mark Twain and Lauren Belfer have all called the area “home”. Erie County has also given the world Fisher-Price toys and the chicken wing.

Governor Signs Opioid “Lockbox” Bill On June 29th, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law legislation establishing an opioid se lement fund and advisory board to ensure that se lement monies are directed toward substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery.

The legislation, which was cra ed by A orney General Letitia James in close coordination with NYSAC to ensure the settlement monies are used for treatment and prevention of opiate abuse, and not “replace

existing state funding.”

The bill also creates an Opioid Se lement Board, which will include 21 appointees, seven of which will come from a list of nominees submi ed by the New York State Association of Counties. The Board will provide evidence-based recommendations to the Legislature to help the state appropriately fi nance initiatives to prevent and treat substance abuse disorders.
