Bear harvest in 2020
0, Eden put together their own nine-play scoring drive. They fi nally scored on a 1-yard run that had been set up with a 26-yard passing play. A er a successful extra point kick the score was 12-7. Springville came right back with a 5-play scoring drive. They would score from the one a er a 24-yard run fell just short of the goal. That score came in the early minutes of the second quarter. Another missed try for extra points le the score at 18-7. Eden scored again in the next series. A er 11 plays they were on the Springville 43. From there, they completed a touchdown pass. Adding the point a er, the score had closed to 18-14 with 6:14 to play in the half. Three plays into the next Springville drive, an intercepted pass gave the ball back to Eden. Four plays later, they turned the ball back to Springville on downs. Eden got the ball right back as they recovered a muffed snap on a 2nd and 10 play. It took Eden just three plays to score with a touchdown pass. They would miss the extra point, but had taken the lead 20-18 with 1:21 le in the half. With Gowanda sports teams idle during the Easter break, the game of interest for Panthers fans was the April 9 contest between Eden and Springville. Gowanda opened its season with a 28-0 loss at Eden and will be at Springville April 16. In this week’s game, Springville had the ball fi rst starting on their own 29. A er a motion penalty set them back on the fi rst play of the game, they gradually worked their way to the 46 with a series of short runs. Then, runs of 30 yards, 22 yards, 9 yards and 10 yards set them up for a fi nal touchdown run from the 5. The holder on the extra point had trouble handling an off-target snap leaving Springville up 6-0 a er the fi rst series. Eden started their fi rst series on their own 15. A er picking up just five yards on three straight passing attempts, they punted the ball back to Springville. A nineplay drive took Springville to the Eden 17 where a lost fumble ended the drive. On the next play, an Eden pass was intercepted and returned for a second Springville touchdown. This time they would fake the extra point kick and try to pass for extra points. Gowanda Mural Project continues in second summer BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The week a er Easter saw the Gowanda Mural Project’s fi rst mini-murals of 2021 underway. A er one year, the Gowanda Mural Project has quickly become one of the community’s most popular cultural activities. What started as a simple artistic beautification project has quickly captured the hearts and minds of the community. The Mural Project core
owned by Gabel Brothers Furniture, is occupied by Tammy’s Unique Boutique. In five separate paintings, the images of Bear, Snipe, Deer, Wolf, Beaver, Hawk, Turtle and Heron are displayed.The artwork was designed by Gowanda art teacher Heather Rydzik. Hunters in Ca¡ araugus County shot 47 black bears in 2020, five fewer than the year before, according to a state Department of Environmental Conservation report. Twenty-eight of the bears killed in Ca¡ araugus County were shot with a shotgun, while there were 19 successful bowhunters. The towns of Great Valley and Coldspring took top honors with six bears shot in each town in 2020. Hunters shot five bears each in Allegany and Napoli. There were threebears shot in Hinsdale and South Valley and two bears each in Ashford, East O¡o and Yorkshire. There was one bear killed in Carrollton,Conewango, Ellico¡ ville, Humphrey, Leon, Machias, Olean, O¡o,Perrysburg, Portville and Randolph.
