Cheers! Salud! Slainte! Prost! No matter how you say it, this weekend will celebrate fine craft beers and regional wines. As it is every year, the ever-popular 10th annual Beer and Wine Festival at Holiday Valley is already sold out, but don’t dismay. You can still join the merriment at the sixth annual Brew Master’s Dinner on Friday evening, Nov. 8. The beer and foodpairing event, will feature the unbelievable flavor combinations of nationally recognized craft beers and classic seasonally focused, locally sourced cuisine. The event is an informal and intimate meet-and-greet, and brewers will be on hand to discuss each beer with you and explain the pairing decisions. New this year — food items will be grown and purchased from within a 60-mile radius of Holiday Valley and will be served at five food stations. “We’re really excited about the Brewer’s Dinner this year with local fresh foods,” said Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director of Holiday Valley. “This is a direction we’re heading for John Harvard’s, too. Ellicottville Sports Round-Up
Eagles Varsity Sports Teams Produced 2 Wins and 2 Losses by Todd Palmatier
Ellicottville Varsity Volleyball finished a fine season on the heels of their state title, although they lost in the semifinals to Randolph. They are only losing two players next year— seniors Courtney Scanlon and Kayla Dunkleman, who both put in great seasons for the Lady Eagles. The remaining squad will return for the 2014
season. Ellicottville Varsity Football moved up a division this year from DD to D, and although they did not make it to Ralph Wilson Stadium this year, they had a lot of positives come out of the season. The Eagles, under their first-year coach, Chad Bartoszek, beat back some larger schools this season. The team played many of the games without key players who their we injured, but still found ways to win were or be competitive with larger teams. The ou outlook for football looks great as we move fo forward and continue to grow in popularity wi the youth in Ellicottville. Senior with fo football players Corey Tomblin and Dylan Pa Paprocki were recognized by Section 6 and Cr Fit Football during two home games Cross See ECS Varsity Sports page 8

Change Makeup of Mansfield Board Voters Approve Casino Proposal
By Jann Wiswall
Voters throughout New York State decided for the controversial ballot proposal to authorize up to seven staterun casinos. In Mansfield, the final determination of winners depends on the results of absentee ballots, which will not be counted until early next week.
The casino amendment won by a statewide margin of 57 percent. In the 55 districts in Cattaraugus County, however, 59 percent of voters were against the proposal. All other counties in Western New York, including Allegany, Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming Counties, also voted against
the gaming measure. In Mansfield, Patriot Party candidate Gregory L. Meyer likely will take a seat on the board in January. He received 119 votes, or 27.1 percent of votes cast. Patriot Party candidate Larry A. Johnson, with 111 votes, and incumbent Republican candidate James See Election 2013 page 9
Ellicottville Veterans Day Celebration at Town Hall Let Us Never Forget What They Have Done By Mary Fox
Veterans of the United States Military are everywhere. You can recognize them by their ball caps, bumper stickers, license plate emblems or pins on their lapels, all of which they display proudly. Two days a year, we publically show our gratitude
to the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces. On Memorial Day in May, we remember the men and women who died while serving. On Veterans Day, we celebrate the service of all military veterans. Veterans have served during wartime — WWII, The
Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa — and during peace time all over the world. The armistice ending World War I between Germany and the Allied Nations was signed on Nov. 11, 1918, at 11 a.m., See Veterans Day page 4
