WORCESTER, MA – Anne-Catherine Schaaf of Westfield, majoring in Classics and Studies in World Literature, has been inducted into the Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society at College of the Holy Cross, the Jesuit honor society founded in 1915. Schaaf is one of 30 new inductees this year, who exemplify the society’s values
of excellence in scholarship, loyalty and service. Selection to Alpha Sigma Nu is one of the highest honors that can be given on a Jesuit campus. Candidates for membership are selected from the top 15 percent of their class, and from this group membership will be awarded to only four percent. Alpha Sigma Nu, the only
honor society permitted to bear the Jesuit name, encourages its members to a lifetime pursuit of intellectual development, deepening Ignatian spirituality, service to others and a commitment to the core principles of Jesuit education. Alpha Sigma Nu is one of 19 honor societies on the College of the Holy Cross campus.
Holiday tradition returns to SUNY Fredonia FREDONIA – After more than a year of unprecedented times, the State University of New York at Fredonia is welcoming back a 50-plus year holiday tradition, the Hanging of the Greens. Taking place in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room on Dec. 2 between 6 and 8 p.m., campus and community members are invited to partake in a variety of activities: creating crafts, watching musical performances and the lighting of a 20-foot holiday tree. The event is free with an optional cost for a build-a-bear activity. A variety of student clubs will engage in kid-friendly activities and SUNY Fredonia faculty and staff often bring their children to campus to experience the winter-themed festivities. Families have returned year after year to engage in the countdown leading up to lighting the tree, eating holiday-deco-
rated cookies, enjoying student-run a cappella groups performing, and more. Hanging of the Greens is “a great way for the community, students, and staff to celebrate the holidays together,” Elizabeth Shearer, president of the Spectrum Entertainment Board, said. Organized by Spectrum Entertainment Board and Campus Life, the Hanging of the Greens tradition began Dec. 2, 1970 — a day after the Williams Center, formerly known as the Campus Center, was opened. The community-oriented event has become one of SUNY Fredonia’s longest-running traditions and serves as a slice of holiday spirit.
