Late Wellsville softball coach Frank Cady to be remembered BY KATHRYN ROSS ` — Plans are afoot to honor the late Frank Cady at Tuller Field, where he spent years coaching the Wellsville High School varsity girls softball team. Highway Superintendent Dean Arnold said that by agreement with the village, the town is responsible for the maintenance of parks and athletic fields while the village retains ownership of the property. As a result, any plans for the fields or parks go through both the village and town boards. Cady, who passed away in February 2017, coached and mentored hundreds of girls. The plan proposed and funded by the Cady family will add enclosed batting cages and raised practice pitching mounds to the Tuller Field complex. Cady’s accomplishments while coach of WHS softball include seven Section V championships in nine years; a New York state record of 58 consecutive wins, including the 1994 Azalea Championship; and seven Expressway Conference titles, including a streak of 41 consecutive wins. Several of his athletes went on to the collegiate level, including five at Division I, two at Division II and three who earned Collegiate AllAmerican status. Many of his former players are involved in local softball as coaches, supporters and players. While the matter has to go through the village board for approval, the town board gave its enthusiastic support to the endeavor. In regard to parks, the town also learned that the Lagoon Field Park is in need of repairs or replacement. Arnold told the board he has

made temporary fixes to some of the equipment but warned those repairs are not permanent. He also told the board that replacement parts are no longer available for the equipment there and said, “It would cost around $7,000 to replace the system.” The town has also received an additional $87,000 in Consolidated Highway funding from the state. Arnold said the additional funding will allow the town to replace 3.5 miles of road on Niles Hill with a fiber base, oil and stone this summer. The department already has plans to replace roadway on Miller Road, West Hill Road and Tarrantine Boulevard at the airport. From Councilwoman Patty Graves the board learned that talks concerning the service contract with the fire department are underway with the new officers and village officials. “We had a joint meeting with everyone concerned that was very successful and we hope that we will be able to make the compromises needed to satisfy everyone’s concerns,” she said. “We are currently investigating some legalities and will meet again in two weeks to start negotiations.” The town has been without a fire contract for over a year. Earlier in the year members of the board expressed their concern with the contract with Alfred State College’s Building and Trades Department for students to construct the new highway building, due to possible COVID-19 restrictions. Some proposed putting the project out to bid in case the students would not be able to perform. It was tabled for two months. At Wednesday’s board meeting Supervisor Shad

Alsworth said he had spoken to the head of the department Jeff Stevens earlier in the day. “Jeff Stevens enthusiastically confirmed the start of the project in the fall semester (August) and expressed that the project includes the diversity that they are
