No Summer Vacation for Construction Crew at SGI
We
BY RICH PLACE Isn’t it nice to get back into the swing of things? We took a drive up to the Springville High School on Tuesday afternoon and it was a flurry of activity, with fields full with either games or practices. All that came after what sounded like a great day of school — especially judging by all the first day photos that were sent in! That’s what makes communities like ours great. In a small town, we take pride and are grateful for so many people willing to share snapshots of their kids’ first day, knowing a lot of others in our community will recognize them. Thanks for sending them in, and be sure to check out our gallery of submissions on pages 10 and 11. And things are looking good all around the Springville school campuses as the result of the ongoing work from the recent capital project. The new Pop Warner Field sign will welcome a new era of football when the home opener is played on Friday, and we hope we’ll see you during the celebration that night! Best of luck to all our school administrators, teachers and other faculty, bus drivers and more who keep our schools running day in and day out. And good luck as well to our students as they begin another school year. Have good news to share? Email us at info@ springvilletimes.com or stop by our office at 65 E. Main St. in Springville.
Although it was summer vacation at Springville these past few months, the activity around the school campuses told a different story, as officials said an average of about 80 workers were on site daily just to work on the capital project. The goal was to get major portions of it completed by the first day of classes on Tuesday and ensure Pop Warner Field would be ready for the first varsity home football game on Friday. Mission accomplished, even if it meant wrapping up those items in the days leading up to Labor Day weekend. See Capital Project page 3

Zabawa Scores Four in Season Opener
The Springville Griffins opened their 2018 varsity football season with a 51-8 loss to Maple Grove on Friday night, but a solid start from their junior quarterback and his breaking of a 36-year school recorded provided some consolation. Making his first varsity start, quarterback Nick Emmick’s touchdown pass in the fourth quarter not only avoided the shutout but was his 16th completion of the night, breaking the old school record of 15 set by Mark Nugent in 1982. “That was a bright spot to have a junior quarterback break a 36-year school record,” said head coach Rob Valenti. “That is something we are using as a benchmark going forward.” He said the Griffins varsity squad had a total of 17 completions throughout

BY ALICIA DZIAK Last week Wednesday, the Varsity team headed to Holland to play under their lights at their recently-reopened middle school. Unfortunately, due to lightning, the game never got started and is rescheduled for Friday, Sept. 7 in Holland. On Friday morning, they headed to Alden. The game got off to a rough start, going down 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of play. From there, Springville was able to rally, with Grace Zabawa putting four goals in net for the Lady Griffs, two assisted by Kelsey Zabawa, with Erin Schneider

Simon Brothers Clothing Dressed the People of Springville BY JOLENE HAWKINS
Looking back to one of the great stores that we had in Springville, many will remember the Simon Brothers Clothing store. Who shopped there for back to school clothes and shoes? Or for a wedding? A special event? Well, let’s learn how it all started with a dream of two young boys, barely into their teens, who emigrated from Russia in 1900. Maurice and Carl Simon, with the help of money given to them by family members in Buffalo, bought packs and set out on foot to peddling pins, notions, socks, shoestrings and handkerchiefs, covering the area from Boston to New Oregon. For six months, they walked and sold during the day and spent nights at farms and homes, learning and enjoying the customs and the people they met in their new country. During this time, they saved up enough money to buy a horse, along with a wagon, and for the next four years continued to peddle their expanding line of wares throughout the bumpy

trails of southern Erie County and Northern Cattaraugus County. In 1904, they were able to set up a permanent store in Springville on Main Street, providing the Village with children’s, women’s and men’s clothing and accessories all under one roof, in three separate stores fronts. Carl Simon retired in 1951, while his brother Maurice retired in 1968, and his sons, Howard and Robert carried on the tradition of the store. Howard went directly into the business in 1935 after graduation from Griffith Institute. He had served his apprenticeship, helping at the store, from the age of 12, by washing windows, stocking shelves and sweeping the floors. He moved on to buying clothes and managing the women’s and children’s Department. He married Jessie Herr and they See A Look Back page 8
