Happy Homecoming!

We It’s Homecoming week in Springville, which means school spirit in the forms of togas, face paint, sports and all things purple and gold. We were happy to catch up with this year’s three Hall of Fame inductees and learn about their time spent at SGI. This week, we also introduce you to this year’s Homecoming Court, who you’ll also get to see in Friday’s Homecoming parade. Don’t miss them, the numerous class, team and club floats, and most likely, a good supply of candy, as the parade winds through town, starting in the front of the high school and ending by Pop Warner Field. After that, the Varsity football game takes place as our hometown Griffs take on Albion. The Springville Times is proud to cover all of SGI’s sports and all of SGI’s athletes, and inside this issue, you’ll find our Fall Sports Yearbook, featuring the many hard working athletes and coaches in our community. Thank you to all the local people and businesses who supported this. Go Griffins! Have good news to share? Email us at info@ springvilletimes.com or stop by our office at 65 E. Main St. in Springville.

Who remembers Guy K Protector? Well, he was a famous race horse owned by the Dewey Dygert family from Springville. He got his name from a comprised combination of his owners names of Dr. Guy Kane and the colt’s sire, Protector. Guy K Protector traveled the country and into Canada, breaking racing records and making headlines. When he was a 4-year-old horse, he made his 1952 debut a smashing one when he swept the dashes of the $3,000 Buffalo Athletic Club Trot. Dewey said Guy K was more than just a good bargain to him, he was his closest friend. There is a story that one particular race, Dewey didn’t like how Guy K’s trotting action was and thought it best if he took him out of the race, but before he decided to do that, he thought maybe he would change Guy K’s shoes. So off he went to Curly’s blacksmith shop, and

On Thursday, Sept. 20, Mercy Flight unveiled a new Bell 429 helicopter, which is joining their life saving fleet. The unveiling ceremony, held at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital’s hangar, featured numerous speakers and a “fly over” of the new helicopter. “It’s a very special day for us,” said Margie Ferrentino, executive vice president of Mercy Flight. Guy K got a new set of shoes, entered the race and set a personal best record that evening. Another story that was shared about the great horse was when Dewey would walk him around to cool him down after a race and he would put the lead shank over Guy K’s back and would run and hide in one of the empty stalls. Guy K would search each stall until he found Dewey. Others in the area learned of this little game and soon they would gather to watch the game between horse and man. The official racing colors were green and white and Dewey drove Guy K in every race except one.
