Get Your Scare on Nightmare Hayrides

As Nightmare Hayrides on Sommerville Street celebrates 28 years, it continues to find new and innovative ways to scare the many attendees that come by year after year.

This year is no exception, with a new feature to be added out on the hayride. But don’t expect to know what it is before you ride, says Karen Kent, who co-owns the business with her husband, John.

“We don’t want people to know about it until they get out here,” she teased. “It should be a lot of fun and it should scare them.”

Hosted at the same location as the Ellicottville Championship Rodeo, the Nightmare Hayrides on Sommerville Street will begin Friday, Sept. 28 and continue on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through Oct. 28.

The experience includes a 25-minute tractor-drawn hayride, a haunted wooden maze, a haunted barn and a vortex tunnel.

“Every year we change things around,” said Kent. “In fact, it’s never really the same even night after night. A lot of times

the haunters decide they want to do something different each night. It’s a lot of fun.”

The hayride haunts include a full cast of clowns, witches, chainsaw men, scarecrows and anything and everything in between. And because several of the characters are meant to be frightening, Kent emphasized that the experience it best for children 12 and up.

Admission to the hayrides is $20 per person; 5 and under are free. The hayrides will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 29 through Oct. 29, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. with the last ride running at 9:30. No reservations are needed.

She said she’s busy all weekend at the site, which doesn’t have reliable internet access, and it’s difficult to respond to messages via email or Facebook on the day of the events.

A consignment auction presented by the Cattaraugus County Agricultural Society is being planned for Saturday, Oct. 6 at 9 a.m. the county fairgrounds.

Consignments accepted include field and garden tractors; horses and animal supplies; farm, construction, horse-drawn and municipal equipment; new furniture, quilts, sheds, farm tools, tack, ATV’s, utility side by sides and snowmobiles.

Participants can drop off their items between noon and 8 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 4 and between 8 a.m. and noon on Oct. 5.

No used household items will be

accepted. There will be a 10-percent commission for items $1 to $1,000 and a 7-percent commission for items $1,001 and up. Cash or good checks accepted day of the sale.

There will be a breakfast, lunch and baked goods made and served by local Amish to benefit their hospital fund.

Ellicottville Ghost Hunt Scheduled for Oct. 12

John Koerner, founder of Paranormal Walks, author, professor and historian is inviting the public on Oct. 12 to join him for the haunted 1829 Ellicottville Town Hall ghost hunt.

Registration starts at 8 p.m. at the gazebo. A lecture on haunted Ellicottville and the history of the town hall and museum will follow at 8:30.

At 9 p.m., ghost hunters will break up into small groups to gather evidence at the town hall, United Church of Ellicottville

and the Ellicottville Historical Museum.

Groups will reassemble to examine evidence.

Then at 10 p.m., the groups will take a 7-minute walk to the Jefferson Street Cemetery to visit a few graves.

The cost is $20, and organizers said half of the proceeds will go to the Ellicottville Historical Society.

National Alpaca Farm Days • Sept. 29 & 30 Mager Mountain Among Locals Celebrating National Alpaca Farm Days Slice of Heaven Alpacas in Randolph, Sugartown Farms in Ellicottville also participating

Tucked in the hillside on the outskirts of Little Valley is Mager Mountain Alpacas owned

by Paul and Sue Mager.

They invite the public to visit their farm for National Alpaca Farm Days on Saturday, Sept.

29 and Sunday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

During the open house, people can learn all about the history of alpacas, alpaca farming, and they’ll have hands-on opportunities. Local fiber artist Nancy Blessing will be demonstrating yarn spinning and fiber processing throughout the weekend. There will be tours and a viewing area where visitors can see the three new babies (crias). They will also enjoy the farm’s So Soft Gift Shop with lots of yarn and quality alpaca goods. There will be a free drawing for an alpaca garment to recognize the weekend event.

Paul said their alpacas are quite friendly, so people can get up close and personal with them and watch the babies run around and play.

He said a cria was born earlier this month and it’s a rare rose gray, which is very difficult to get.

According to Paul, only seven-percent of alpacas are gray and, among them, even rarer are the rose grays.

“We get a lot of pleasure from working with the animals and watching the babies.

They hit the ground running so, for the first three or four months of their lives, they run around and play and jump in the air. It’s called ‘pronking’ when they leap in the air with all fours and sometimes twist,” he said. “They chase each other like they are playing tag and it’s very amusing to watch.”

The Magers have owned and operated Mager Mountain Alpacas for 16 years. Paul said they have been raising alpacas longer than anyone in the local area — so long that most of their herd was born on the farm. He said their animals are not afraid of humans and are more friendly than the average alpaca. Their alpaca farm is a popular destination for school children eager to have a handson experience with the animals.

According to Paul, when they first started their farm and people came, some had never

heard of alpacas. He said the first thing they would ask was, “what do you do with them?” He said now people know about them and understand what they are for because there are a lot of alpaca farms around.

“We currently have 23 alpacas including four babies [crias] and two llamas that tend to be a little protective of the alpaca they guard,” he said. “If we leave the one llama in the area and she sees the alpaca go over to the fence to visit people, a lot of times she will get between the alpacas and the people, spit and carry on. If she’s being naughty, we sometimes have to separate her from the rest.”

Paul and Sue really enjoy meeting people — both those who come to the farm to see the animals, as well as those who have bought alpacas from them. He said they really specialize in mentoring new farms in learning how to handle the animals and they try to mitigate any issues that can come from new people trying to handle an alpaca that isn’t naturally friendly.

“Ours are very friendly because Sue is very hands-on with them as soon as they are born,”

he said. “She weighs them everyday to make sure they are gaining weight and everything is fine.They’ve gotten so they are not as afraid of people as alpacas’ natural nature is, which is to fear people.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Bertrand Chaffee Hospital is sharing this reminder to the residents in its service area, from Gowanda to Bliss and Colden to Ellicottville, that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Last October, Bertrand Chaffee Hospital converted from digital mammography system to 3D mammography (digital tomography) thanks to funding from the New York Statewide Healthcare Facility Transformation Program. With 3D mammography, a series of images are taken to create a three-dimensional picture that has more detail and definition.

The American College of Radiology recommends annual mammography screenings for women between the ages of 40 and 74 along with clinical breast exams. Ask your primary care physician or gynecologist about a screening schedule that is right for you based on family history and other risk factors. When breast cancer is diagnosed in its early stages, the treatment options and chances of survival are much greater.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS A Sweet Surprise for Back-to-School Season

Ah, back to school.

This early September time represents a variety of emotions for a variety of people. Toward the end of the summer, every student hears the off-handed comment from their parent: “I can’t wait until September.” The empty nest means an opportunity to have some time for oneself, even if only for eight hours of the day.

Students dread the coming workload, the inevitable

piles of stress that grow and grow until finals week and then summer comes again.

The ECS Student Council took it upon themselves this year to sweeten the beginning of the school year for all students in an elaborate project involving over 800 individually-packaged Subway cookies. On Tuesday, Sept. 18, a handful of students both in and out of Student Council met about an hour before the start of school to put each of the cookies in

plastic bags, with small messages included. In an effort to account for all dietary needs, cookies without dairy, eggs, and gluten were included, and Swedish Fish were given to the kids with other needs.

That morning during everyone’s first period class, each elementary classroom was greeted by a few Student Council members, back-to-school Santa Clauses, giving out cookies. The event served as a chance for Student Council to build

their reputation with the elementary kids; the majority of students, with cookies in hand, enthusiastically agreed that they would like to join Student Council when they’re old enough.

Whether because of the cookies or because of excitement about the club itself, I suppose we’ll never know. Because of the different schedules for every high-schooler and middle-schooler, cookies were also handed out during lunch to make sure everyone got a chance to

share in the fun.

The “Student Council Sponsored-Cookie Day” found its way all the way up to the administration of the school. Erich Ploetz, ECS principal and Student Council advisor, was especially satisfied with the turnout. “I believe it was a light-hearted and enjoyable welcome back gift for all students on campus,” Ploetz commented. “I want to thank our Student Council president, Ginna Hensel, for establishing the idea and seeing it through.”

Hensel shared in the excitement. “A success!” she confirmed. “Eight hundred cookies later and the whole school was grinning ear to ear. But StuCo couldn’t have done it without the help of the volunteers; they deserve a round of applause for bagging each individual cookie. It was a little bit of a bumpy road to

Cookie Day but seeing the elementary students cheer as we delivered their cookies was well worth it!

Special thanks to Ashlee Bapst, the district manager of Ellicottville’s Subway, for donating 450 of the total cookies to Student Council! I really hope to have created a longstanding tradition here are ECS.” If a tradition is something Hensel hopes to achieve, she just may have done it with this event.

A week later, people are still buzzing about Student Council and their cookies.

My own sister, a sixthgrader, is overwhelming in her excitement to join the organization as soon as she can. Few things can bring a true smile to students in the first few weeks of school as they settle back into the schedule, but the myth has been confirmed: cookies make everything better!

FOOTBALL Franklinville/Ell. 28, Portville 7 PORTVILLE — On a field battered by a fierce downpour that caused a long delay, Franklinville/Ellicottville found its footing in the muck.

The Titans (2-2) scored 21 consecutive points in the fourth quarter, including a 65yard dash by Logan Frank, to break away from Portville (1-3).

The game was delayed an hour and 30 minutes following the first quarter.

Jordan Grinols produced two touchdowns on the ground and paced an F/E running attack that piled up 254 yards. Tyler Clear added another score.

Emma McCarthy had four blocks and a team-best 13 kills and Madi Smith served up five aces as Allegany-Limestone ultimately hung on for a hard-fought 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 19-25, 25-22 triumph in a CCAA East meeting Monday.

The Gators snapped a four-match losing streak to improve to 3-6 while Ellicottville fell to 2-6. The Eagles dropped a 26-24 first-set heartbreaker that could have changed the landscape of the match before eventually staging their comeback.

“The girls said after this game that it was the hardest and best they’ve played all season,” Eagles coach Katie Auge said.

“We also decided that in every game we dug ourselves into a hole. When we did win, we had to fight pretty hard from behind.”

Ellicottville had a handful of standouts, including Linea Jimerson with 17 kills and six aces and Makenna Smith with 28 digs. Jenna Hadley had 16 assists and nine digs, while Malory Chamberlain added three aces, two kills and nine digs in the loss.

Jack Snyder’s big junior year continued last week with a two-goal game against Portville as he helped the Eagles’ boys soccer team beat the Panthers 4-0 on Thursday, Sept.

20. Through Tuesday, Sept. 25, Snyder leads the team in both goals (seven) and assists (six) as the Eagles are off to a 6-3-1 start (4-1-1 in CCAA East).

OBITUARIES

Rev. Bede Fitzpatrick OFM 1922-2018

RINGWOOD, N.J. — Rev. Bede Fitzpatrick, OFM, of Ringwood, a native of Ellicottville, N.Y., died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2018) at The Holy Name Friary in Ringwood.

Born Francis Bernard Fitzpatrick, on July 13, 1922, in Ellicottville, Fr. Bede was one of seven children born to William F. and Loretto Kelly Fitzpatrick.

He was a 1938 graduate of Ellicottville High School and a 1943 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he played football as a running back on the freshman team.

As World War II was starting to escalate, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was soon commissioned as a lieutenant assigned to the amphibious force in Japan.

His responsibilities included coordinating landing crafts at several battle sites, including Iwo Jima and the war’s largest battle on the sea, the battle of Leyte. He was honorably discharged in 1946, when he returned to Ellicottville to work for his father at Fitzpatrick & Weller.

Soon after his return, Fr. Bede was drawn to the Franciscan priesthood and in 1950 was received into the order. He professed his final vows in 1954 and was ordained in 1955. His interest was in missionary work and he subsequently began a 55-year career in Japan, first as a student learning the language and culture; then in 1961 beginning an assignment as Superior of St. Joseph’s Friary at Roppongi; and later as the first

pastor at the newly opened Franciscan Chapel Center. In 1971 he facilitated the introduction of Marriage Encounter in Japan.

His official retirement and return to the United States was in 2013, to St. Anthony Friary in Butler. Of his long career, he is quoted upon retirement as saying “ … I am grateful to God, to the Order and to the Japanese people. I feel just fulfilled, done my job, so at 91, it’s time to retire.”

He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Widger of Great Valley, N.Y.; a brother, Dana Fitzpatrick of Ellicottville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four brothers, William Fitzpatrick, Jess Fitzpatrick, Joseph Fitzpatrick and an infant twin brother to Dana, Daniel Fitzpatrick.

A funeral mass was celebrated Sept. 15 at St. Anthony Church, Butler.

A memorial mass was celebrated Wednesday (Sept. 26, 2018) at the Friary Chapel on the St. Bonaventure campus, preceded by a visitation at the chapel.

Burial followed in the Friar’s plot at St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Franciscan Friars Holy Name Province, 144 W. 32nd St., New York, NY 10001-3202.

This year there has been an increased emphasis on quality in terms of merchandise and food vendor products and each vendor must have a physical product to sell. (No more companies selling contracts etc.) Merchandise vendors have submitted photos and full descriptions of their products and their booth, while food vendors have been contacted to discuss their menus. In both cases, booth appearance is being improved with many vendor applications not being accepted.

Better emergency vehicle and pedestrian traffic flows and reduction of vendor parking in the village is also a priority. The Chamber has designated two

private lots and paid for parking passes for all vendors with penalties for non-compliance.

While security within the Village has improved dramatically over recent years, concerns were raised regarding stricter enforcement of open containers and increased street patrols in the surrounding residential area.

These issues were brought to the attention of the Ellicottville Police Department by the Special Events Committee and adjustments have been made.

Sculpt Yoga Coming to Core Performance

Core Performance is looking to offer a new and innovative fitness class called Sculpt Yoga. Sculpt Yoga is a total body workout designed to exercise every major muscle group fusing yoga, weight training, cardio, and plyometricstyle movements to focus the mind and body. The addition of cardio and weights makes Sculpt Yoga an atypical yoga class, setting it apart from other fitness classes.

The class will be taught by Dr. Joe Stahlman, who recently moved here with his wife, Fileve, from Indiana. They are the new owners of Tickletown in Humphrey. Joe holds a Ph.D. in anthropology,

and works as an anthropologist and an archaeologist. In his many roles, he employs what he learns about people and culture to make positive change. In the last 10 years, he has been an avid yoga practitioner. In 2012, he became a Hatha Yoga teacher. A few years later, he discovered group fitness classes and has been going ever since. This past year, he became certified to teach Sculpt Yoga fitness classes.

Joe describes his Sculpt Classes as “a vigorous, but safe yoga practice. A huge benefit of this style of workout is that it provides the opportunity for BOTH the advanced and beginner yogis to develop the muscles needed for an athletic and safe yoga practice (or

whatever other activity you might do). Typically, people who take Vinyasa yoga classes tend to be flexible and muscle strength tends to be a secondary focus of their practice. Sculpt helps strengthen the muscles surrounding and supporting the joints.”

Joe’s classes are an ideal way to cross-train for all sports because of his emphasis on cardio and strength training. According to Joe, “Practitioners will sweat away the stress of modern living. In a matter of minutes after the first song you will drip with sweat!”

A Guide to Safely Removing Fallen Leaves

Raking leaves is a chore many people immediately associate with autumn.

Even though raking seems like a simple activity, it’s still possible to be injured while removing leaves from the yard.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center advises that pain from outdoor leaf chores can range from strained back muscles to twisted knees.

Blisters on the hands and sunburn are other potential side effects. Many people do not realize that raking is a thorough cardiovascular workout. Individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease or those who have recovered from surgery may not be well enough to rake leaves.

Here’s how to make autumn leaf removal more of a breeze when the job is done safely.

• Pay attention when using a leaf blower. Be cautious not to point an operational blower in the direction of people or pets, as debris can be blown about and cause injury.

• Stretch out before raking leaves. Warm up muscles beforehand so they are less likely to cramp.

UPMC experts suggest taking a short walk prior to raking to stimulate circulation.

• Use proper raking form.

Much like snow shoveling, one should emphasize proper posture when raking,

with legs slightly bent and weight distributed evenly.

Hold the rake handle close to the body and keep one hand near the top of the rake for better leverage.

• Use the proper gear.

A leaf rake fans out like a triangle and comes in various widths. Choose a lightweight material that can be easily maneuvered. A metal rake is for stones and dirt and shouldn’t be used for leaves. To get between bushes, a smaller version of a leaf rake, called a shrub rake, should be used.

• Wear protective gear.

When raking or leaf blowing, protect your eyes against debris. You also may want to use a mask to prevent inhalation of leaf mold and other particulates.

Gloves can protect hands from blisters.

• Follow manufacturers’ directions. Read the instructions for powered leaf blowers, and never modify the device in an unauthorized way.

• Use a tarp and lift wisely. Rake leaves onto a tarp that can be dragged to a garbage pail or to the curb for municipal pick up. For those who must lift bags of leaves, do so by bending at the knees, not from the waist.

• Wear sunscreen. Protect skin from the sun. Even though temperatures are cooler in the fall, this does not mean the sun’s rays

are any less harmful. Also, take breaks to rehydrate frequently.

• Use a secure ladder.

When removing leaves from gutters, be sure the ladder is sturdy and secure. Consider having a friend serve as a spotter, holding on to the ladder to offer greater security. Do not overextend to stretch for leaves.

If at any time during leaf clean-up you feel sharp or dull, incessant pains, stop working. Listen to your body’s signals and start the task anew the next day or when you feel better.

Race season continues this fall, and what better way to burn off some calories than gathering friends and family and joining in? Whether you’re in it to win it or just for the camaraderie, hitting the pavement or hitting the trails this October will surely be memorable!

Fall Fest weekend in Ellicottville means many traditions for thousands of people—why not make the annual 5K one of your traditions while at the largest EVL festival of the year? On Saturday, Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m., head to Holiday Valley for a 5K race on area roads held during Fall Festival Weekend. Compete for awards in 5-year age

groups, great post-race party and great door prizes.

The following day, mountain bikers have their turn during the annual Fall Festival Mountain Bike Race. Racers in several different classes from several surrounding states compete for awards and prizes in a fun and challenging course filled with challenging climbs, amazing single-track and fun/challenging downhill sections. Pre-register or head down on race-day to register.

The EVL Half returns to the Village Oct. 27. You’re sure to be entertained by

costumed runners while heading through the streets of EVL. Custom medals are given to half marathon finishers, and shirts go to those participating in the 5K and half.
