Concord Town Board Sets Budget Upcoming Events Hearings

Springville Oktoberfest Sept. 30

By Alicia Dziak

It might still be September, but the excitement of Oktoberfest is right on the horizon. Springville’s very own German celebration is set for Saturday, Sept. 30, from 2 to 11 p.m. at Fireman’s Park. This 12th annual event, held rain or shine, features food, music and fireworks, and if that’s not enough to get you in the door, there’s much more. A sizable selection of German food includes sausages, brats, burgers, sauerkraut, German potato salad and pretzel rolls. And of course, craft beers will be on tap, along with local wines. “The festival really is all about the food and drink,” said Springville Area Chamber of Commerce Director, Jennifer Weber. “This year, we added a few new beers to the dozen we offer on tap. And our

board members are already hard at work in the kitchen making homemade sauerkraut and boiling and peeling potatoes for the pounds and pounds and pounds we will be serving. It’s an impressive (and very tasty) sight to behold.” Music by The Springville Jazz Band, The Frankfurters, Mumbo Gumbo and Joe Wagner will have guests dancing or singing along. Feed your competitive side by entering the Best German Costume, “Apfel” Dessert or the second annual Running of the Weiners contests. From 2 to 5 p.m., enjoy the Southtowns German Car and Motorcycle Show.

For those of you wondering why Oktoberfest is held in September every year, Weber explained: “Actually, Oktoberfest in Munich starts in Mid-September and goes until Oct. 3, so we are following in line with the traditional festivities! It’s been held the last weekend of September here in Springville as a tradition.”

that have created a remarkable surge in the agribusiness industry over the past two decades. If you think you know all there is to know about alpacas, think again! Although it’s wellknown that alpaca fiber is very warm and hypoallergenic (it doesn’t have wool’s lanolin, which is an allergen to some), did you know that it’s also naturally flame resistant? Even better, alpaca fiber is also water resistant: it can wick away moisture, which makes it great for close fitting garments, like socks, and accessories that get exposed to rain and snow, like hats and scarves! Although alpaca farms have

The 2017 Homecoming Varsity football game between the Griffins and the visiting Depew Wildcats didn’t go quite as planned. As per usual, the stands were packed tight enough to make one question themselves “where does personal space end.” The standing room throughout was also congested with the happy smiling faces that make our town special—the family-like atmosphere that can only to be found in Springville. The unity of the town is also apparent on the field, as the Griffins walked onto the

people working on the build, those two have spent countless hours at home and at the Heritage Building prepping and building. So happier days will be coming. Those words though were penned by a man of national fame and will be one of the highlights of the Heritage Building displays when it opens to the public. The man was none other than Jack Yellen: the sports writer turned lyricist that chose the Town of Concord as his own. Many know him for his catchy lyrics and national prestige as president of ASCAP, the organization that protects copyrights and royalties of singers and songwriters. However, he spent the majority of his life here in Concord as a

EMERLING

The regular meeting of the Town of Concord Board was held Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017 at the Town Hall at 86 Franklin Street Springville. The meeting opened with public comment where Mary Jane Miess continued her

advocacy of the seniors in the town. She has had concerns that the five day lunch program has been reduced to four days. She still had concerns that the seniors did not have adequate information given to them. She furthered the advocacy by mentioning the need for more transportation resources for seniors in Springville. She reminded the board that a full time director is still needed at the senior center. Matt Mayer asked the board if they have supported the Buffalo Niagara Partnership in looking at the possibility of Amazon locating a headquarters in WNY. Gary
