LAX to the MAX Welcome to the Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival

A three-day festival celebrating all things lacrosse is coming to Ellicottville this weekend, as players from both sides of the border will have the opportunity to complete throughout the village and beyond.

Those competitions will include a college scrimmage, as St. Bonaventure University will play John Carroll University at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bonnies’ first scrimmage.

That game is scheduled to be placed at Ellicottville Central School.

The St. Bonaventure coach, Randy Mearns, is a new Ellicottville resident.

Elsewhere, teams ranging from the boys youth category through to the master’s divisions will vie for the chance to win all across the Ellicottville area,

Cattaraugus Community Action (CCA) will host its seventh annual Empty Bowls Dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 at its Lighthouse Soup Kitchen, 25 Jefferson St. in Salamanca.

Created by the Imagine Render Group, Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. These simple dinners consist of various soups and are held across the United States; local area artists create bowls that are then sold to the public to serve as a reminder of what their neighbors may be sitting down to nightly.

Tickets to the event, which are available for a $10 donation, include a simple dinner of soups and salad prepared by the culinary arts students of CCA’s Food For Thought program and one of the locally created artisan bowls.

Event organizers said CCA’s Lighthouse Soup Kitchen serves thousands of meals to children, adults and senior citizens each year and also distributes thousands of food boxes through the food pantry to those in need.

All proceeds from the Empty Bowls Dinner will help support CCA’s Lighthouse Soup Kitchen in its effort to fight hunger in the community.

National Alpaca Farm Days • Sept. 29 & 30

Local Farms Ready to Celebrate All Things Alpaca

Several local farms will join other alpaca farms across the country to observe National Alpaca Farms Days, Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept.

30.

During the weekend, families will have the opportunity to visit the farms where they can get up-close to alpacas for a hands-on experience.

Visitors can learn about the animals and their history, how to raise them, their fleece and the products made from it.

Alpaca farm owners will be happy to offer tips and suggestions to visitors who might be interested in beginning their own small alpaca operation.

People will learn the cost of having an alpaca, the babies (cria) and the tax benefits.

A Slice of Heaven Alpacas, in Randolph, will be open Saturday only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Alpaca Farm Days event. Owners Mike and Sue Bean will offer tours of the alpaca areas where people can see their animals.

Now in their seventh year of alpaca farming, they have a herd of 36 that is about to become 37 because, according to Sue, they are waiting for one of their alpacas to give birth anytime now.

“By the time Alpaca Farm Days is here, we’ll have a little baby (cria) on the farm. We only have one baby this year, so we’re very much looking forward to this one. It’s from two special alpacas that were breed to produce a special combination, so we’re hoping this one is something pretty fabulous,” she said.

The Beans enjoy educating visitors about these amazing, beautiful, gentle animals and the products made from their fleece. She said they will be happy to offer tips and suggestions to visitors who might be

interested in beginning their own small alpaca operation, much like how their own farm began.

“Most people don’t know what alpacas are or what they produce. At the Alpaca Farm Days event, they learn the cost of having an alpaca, the tax benefits and they get to see and touch the animals,” she said.

While visiting the farm, visitors can check out the Simply Natural Alpaca Gift Shop on the premises where they can sign up for drawings to win a $25 and $50 gift certificate and can take advantage of some in-store specials.

Refreshments will be available including chili, cider, donuts, hot dogs, and coffee with all proceeds going to the Randolph Community Cupboard.

A Slice of Heaven Alpacas is located at 11144 Pope Road, in Randolph. Regular business hours for the gift shop are Monday and Tuesday from 4-6 p.m.; Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to Helen, they will have alpacas available for viewing and touching. They’ll talk about the alpacas during an educational tour and their gift shop, Sugartown Farms Store, will be open.

“We’ve been in the business about 14 years and we currently have 55 alpacas in our herd,” she said. “We have seven cria and there will be an area where the visitors will be able to see the the moms and their crias.”

Sugartown Farms, located on the edge of the village of Ellicottville, is open weekends and weekdays by appointment year-

round. The farm store offers a wide variety of quality alpaca apparel including socks, hats, gloves, sweaters, and scarves. It also features a selection of handmade heirloom quality bears, blankets, and soft, fleecy toys for a very special

with games hosted at the Village Park, at the school and at the new Chamber of Commerce sports fields at the bottom of Holiday Valley Road next to Holiday Valley Realty.

No ordinary breed of lacrosse event, the festival is organized by the legendary Rhino Lacrosse Company, founded and run by former professional lacrosse player and U.S. national team player Ryan Powell together with business partner Mike Riorden.

“We call our events festivals instead of tournaments with good reason, because they aren’t just lacrosse competitions,” Powell said. “They’re unique experiences for players and family members alike that have a passion for lacrosse.”

Powell said Rhino’s events have a different vibe, with everything from food trucks to clothing and jewelery vendors, wooden lacrosse stick making demonstrations to fun zones and live music.

Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce executive director Brian McFadden said the tournament couldn’t take place at better time.

“We’ll have our chairlift running, so families can go to the top of the mountain, whether it’s to enjoy the great views or to have a picnic by the lake,” he said. “It’s probably the most comfortable time of the year as well. Not as hot as the summer months, but still a great time to enjoy all of the outdoor patios and live music we have in town.”

Compared to last year’s tournament involving 39 teams, based on current registrations, it’s predicted between 50 and 70 teams will attend this year’s event.

Additionally, Ellicottville will be unveiling a brand-new outdoor recreation center, The Chamber Fields at Holiday Valley, with two additional playing fields for a total of eight fields for this year’s tournament.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS Legal Eagles Attend Their First Day of County Government

ECS Looking For New Elementary School Principal Board Approves New Student-Led ESPRA Magazine

Two Ellicottville students made their first trek to the County Legislative Building on Sept. 12.

This building, home to our district attorney Lori Rieman, also houses the prestigious County Government program. Offered as a replacement for ECS’s Participation in Government course, County Government allows students a first-hand view of the Cattaraugus County legal system.

Ginna Hensel and Meganne Chapman, our Ellicottville attendees, get to spend every Wednesday at the County Building with students from across the area. For the entirety of the fall semester, this driven group of dynamic minds led by Mr. Butler, a retired teacher from Olean and CubaRushford, will organize mock governments, stage debates, and attend county legislative meetings.

Affectionately named “County Gov,” this program is perfect for future lawyers and paralegals, as well as individuals with a passion for government and political science.

After her first day, Ginna Hensel was ecstatic.

“It was more than I ever thought it could be,” she told me. “I've been looking forward to County Gov since the 7th grade. Both my parents did it and it's something I always knew I'd excel in.

The information I learned and the bond built with my debate group on the first day were incomprehensible. At the end of the day, we had connected on a whole new personal level that none of us thought would be made for a month. It's almost as if we were old friends catching up on life.

That's what happens when we get opportunities to meet with like-minded individuals under the instruction of a passionate teacher. I already know that when County Gov is over I will walk away with memories and experiences that I will hold onto for the rest of my life. I look forward to the opportunity to making memories, learning, and opening doors I didn't think were possible. After such a lifechanging and eye-opening first day, I can't imagine what will come next.”

Meganne Chapman was equally excited. “I was nervous and excited about the first day,” she said, “not knowing who I was going to meet or what schools were going to be there. Once we did a few icebreaker activities, I was able to meet new friends and reconnect with ones I hadn't seen in a long time.

each and every one of us. We split into Liberals and Conservatives and started working on our first debate. I look forward to next Wednesday when we continue to prepare for the upcoming debate and every Wednesday thereafter.”

Though Meganne is planning to be an engineer and Ginna a lawyer, County Gov is eye-opening for anyone and everyone. When they turn 18, these women will be first at the polling booths.

“Understanding how government works, even at the county level, makes the process of voting so much less scary,” says Ginna. “Only 43 percent of young people vote. After all I’ve learned, I’m fixing to change that statistic!”

Ginna and Meganne are just two in an entire generation of young people enthusiastic to learn about government, appreciative of our legal system, and who possess the smarts to change America.

The Ellicottville Central School District is again searching for an elementary principal and curriculum coordinator after William Delity, who was assigned to the post in August, returned as elementary teacher at the district.

The school board on Aug. 30 called a special meeting to accept Delity’s resignation from the elementary principal position, which he had been appointed to by the board two weeks prior. He was reassigned to his position in the fourth grade.

“He decided he wanted to remain a teacher and we honored it,” said Superintendent Bob Miller. “It was his decision.”

Delity confirmed that on Wednesday, stating he asked and received permission to go back to the classroom.

“Truly, the classroom is where my heart is and where I best serve our students,” he said in an email.

“I am blessed to work with a supportive BOE, administration, teaching staff and community.”

The district posted the opening on its website Sept. 5, where it will remain for a month, Miller said.

In the meantime, Miller is acting as elementary principal with the help of several staff members, including middle and high school principal Erich Ploetz.

Delity, a 1985 Elllicottville graduate, has been a longtime member of the Ellicottville elementary school community, serving as a teacher for 28 years.

He started as a fifth grade teacher before moving to fourth grade eight years later.

The elementary principal vacancy at Ellicottville came about following the resignation of former principal Connie Poulin.

IN OTHER BUSINESS at the school board’s meeting on Tuesday, the board approved ESPRA Magazine under the supervisor of Ploetz and teacher Marie Davis. The adoption came following a presentation by two students, Louisa Benatovich and Ginna Hensel.

The magazine will be a quarterly publication that, according to the girls’ presentation, will “be a real glimpse into ECS student life.”

The publication will include students’ original works including articles, essays, photos, cartoons, poetry and more.

The 16-page publication will be printed by the Olean BOCES at a cost of $222 per issue, a cost that Ellicottville Rotary has agreed to donate, according to the girls’ presentation. There will be 300 copies printed each quarter.

Other student leaders of the magazine are Allison Calarco as treasurer and Samantha Van Wicklin as secretary. The first publication is expected to go to print the week of Oct. 29 for distribution on Nov. 6.

IN OTHER BUSINESS: • Nathan Opferbeck, a certified public accountant with Buffamante Whipple Buttafaro P.C., presented the board with the district’s 2017-18 external audit.

Although there were a handful of minor citings, no major issues were discovered, he said. The board approved the audit later in the meeting.

• The board accepted the resignation of athletic director Karl Schwartz, effective Oct. 20.

The next meeting of the school board will be held at 7 p.m.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS Young Eagles Boys Soccer Team Off to Hot Start

The Ellicottville boys soccer team is off to its best six-game start in years, but perhaps the best news, given the Eagles’ youth, is this could be just that: a start.

The Eagles (4-1-1) have already tied last season’s win total (4-12-1) and more than half of their members (eight of 15) are only sophomores.

“We're still pretty young, but last year they were all freshmen, (now) most of them are sophomores,” Eagles coach Matt Finn said, “so I think it is that one more year of getting older and bigger and stronger and everything else and there are eight sophomores and five of them start already. Last year they were freshmen and they were starting. So we're still pretty young, only four seniors and three juniors.”

Finn credits the work his

players do outside of the high school season for the year-to-year improvement.

“It's what they do in the offseason,” he said. “A lot of these guys play for Buffalo teams or Buffalo Soccer Academy and (WNY) Flash and all that, so that helps a ton.”

What have they learned?

Finn thought he saw it on Saturday, when the Eagles came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat a visiting Class AA school, Jamestown.

“They've learned how to come back and never be down and just fight through,” Finn said. “I really think that's the difference. I think they realized a 2-0 deficit, they can come back as long as they put it together. They're doing a lot of good things right now.”

Junior Jack Snyder leads the Eagles in both goals (four) and assists (five) through Saturday, while senior Mike McGuire has

five points (three goals).

“At the beginning of the season I looked at a couple of them and said 'You're going to have to get close to 10,’” Finn said. “‘We probably won't have a 20, 25-goal scorer. If you get 10 and you get 10 and you get 10, we can have a good season.' But right now we're pretty balanced.

We've got three, four, five, somewhere in that range for a bunch of guys. It's nice.”

Ellicottville was projected to move to Class C this season due to change in the state’s classification guidelines, but it de-merged the team after it had no members from West Valley and returned to Class D status. Finn said he hasn’t had boys soccer players from West Valley since 2015. Section 6 has just five Class D schools, so the Eagles hope to return to the championship after winning it in 2013 and 2015, last making the finals in 2016.

Finn still thinks the team has room to improve, but it will get a chance at CCAA East power AlleganyLimestone on Tuesday.

“If we can possess it a little bit better, that will be fantastic,” Finn said.

“But we've got a big test on Tuesday with Allegany.

Health & Fitness: Fall is a Super Season for Shaping Up, Experts Say

How many New Year’s Eves have you spent sipping champagne and vowing to get more fit in the coming year?

And how many times have you failed to follow through?

“Dec. 31 over a drink is too late to set goals and make promises,” says Justin Price, owner of The Biomechanics, a personal training and wellness coaching facility in San Diego, Calif. Fall, on the other hand, is a great time to start a fitness program because “you’re going to create good habits for the holiday season and the upcoming winter months,” says Price.

Here are some ways to start making the most of the season. And who knows? This year, you might be in great shape before that New Year’s Eve party rolls around.

Take advantage of the weather. Fall can be a treat for the senses: the crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin carving, a gorgeous canopy of fall foliage and the crunch of leaves underfoot. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures.

“Walking, hiking and cycling are all awesome in the fall,” says Todd Durkin, MS, fitness coach and owner of Fitness Quest 10 in San Diego, Calif. Discover park trails and take in some new scenery, whether you’re walking, biking or in-line skating, he suggests. Or, if you live near the beach, get out and play volleyball, throw the Frisbee around, or play a vigorous game of fetch with your dog.

“It’s a great time to do beach activities because it’s so much less crowded,” says Price. If you’re near a lake, try kayaking or canoeing for an excellent whole-body workout and a great change of pace. And remember, it doesn’t have to seem like exercise to be a great workout.

Integrate exercise into your life. You already know the

obvious suggestions: park farther away from your destination; take stairs instead of elevators; take a walk during your lunch break. Here are a few that are less obvious: If you’re spending the afternoon taking kids to soccer practice instead of reading a book or visiting with another parent, “why not walk around the outside of the field while they practice,” suggests Price. “Or (if you feel comfortable) warm up and cool down with the kids.”

Try “walking meetings” like those Price and his colleagues at Biomechanics often hold. We go for a walk, we brainstorm, and we figure out who’s going to take what responsibilities,” says Price.

“Things get achieved much more quickly,” he says, and everyone feels better for doing it.

Otto to Host Second Annual Harvest Festival

The Otto Volunteer Fire Department Associate Members are sponsoring the second annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 22. The event begins at noon and will continue until 5:30 p.m. at the Otto Fire Hall, 9099 Jark Road.

Proceeds from the festival will go toward the restoration of the Madora Ball Historical Museum. The building was originally a church built in 1861 and currently houses a number of artifacts showcasing Otto’s history. It will be open to the public during the festival.

Serving will start at 12:30 until gone.

Once again there will be a baked potato bar, breaded pork chops and an assortment of vegetables for those wishing dinner.

Complementary ice cream tickets will be available for those making a meal donation.

Remember the 30-day rule.

“It takes about four weeks for the body to adapt to lifestyle changes,” says Price. That’s why people who give up on their fitness programs tend to do so within the first 30 days.

So, if you get out of work and the sun is already too low for an outdoor adventure, join your local gym or sign up for fitness classes for either before work or after. Be consistent and on task for one month. By then, you will not only feel your body changing, but you will see your body changing.

So, when the alarm goes off in the morning and it’s darker and colder, don’t roll over and hit the snooze button. “Try to stick with a program for a month,” Price says. “After a month, behavior patterns will have adapted and it will be much easier to stick with it after that.”

Robert Ott, a forester/ecologist, will be on hand to talk about forestry and ecology as well as answer questions concerning both topics.

There will be a shuttle bus from the Lutheran Church parking lot to take visitors to the museum and to the downtown area during the festival.

Organizers point out this is a family event with no alcohol. The theme this year is the area’s agriculture and history, making it a fun and educational day as well as a fundraiser for the museum.

A staple event in the city for decades, all are invited to the 41st annual Salamanca-Seneca Falling Leaves Festival with events happening all next weekend.

The festival is held daily from Friday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Sept. 30 in Jefferson Street Park and the surrounding downtown area.

This is the third consecutive year that a group of community volunteers who have been involved with the festival many times has organized the Salamanca tradition.

Begun as a way to promote the culture of the Seneca Nation of Indians — as well as the relationship between the Nation and the city of Salamanca — the three-day event will have a cultural aspect with demonstrations of Seneca arts, food and entertainment.

Since the volunteer organizers took over, the festival has received support each year from the city and Seneca Nation, as well as from local businesses and organizations.

With smart investing going into the attractions of the festival, each year has grown with this year promising to be the biggest yet.

Attendees of the festival have the opportunity to experience Seneca culture and heritage and enjoy a view of the beautiful fall foliage covering the surrounding hills from the heart of the city.

Friday night will kick off the festival with Empire State Wrestling under the big tent in Jefferson Street Park. At 5 p.m., the men and women wrestlers of ESW will jump in the ring for a free and familyfriendly show.

Afterwards, attendees will have the opportunity to meet their favorite regional wrestlers.

Admission to the festival is free, as are many of the activities offered for children and their families. There will be free carnival rides on Saturday and Sunday open at noon as well as face painting, balloon animals, a bounce house and a petting zoo.

On Saturday, the food and crafts vendors will open their stands at 11 a.m. Local vendors will have a smorgasbord for hungry attendees, including Indian tacos, fry bread, BBQ, curly fries, steak sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, bloomin onions, kettle corn, cupcakes, pizza, chili and more.

For shoppers, check out the stands offering stretch bottle art, Rustic Originals, Tupperware, jewelry, Native

American puzzles and jewelry, baby clothing, crocheted items, Avon, Rhubarb Alpaca items, goats milk soaps, watercolor paintings and other local items.

Festival attendees should prep their eyes and ears for some live entertainment Saturday under the big tent with three unique acts. The familyfriendly Happy Days Band are to play at 1 p.m. followed by the Cold Spring Indian Dancers doing an hour of traditional Seneca dancing at 3 p.m.

While the performances go on, the organizers said they plan to keep activities going during Saturday, including the eating contests and bed races, which are back again this year, as well as a new addition this year: a caricature artist.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, the artists will draw attendees portraits for free thanks to sponsorship from the festival committee organizers. After 4 p.m., portraits will have to be paid for.

Also new this year is a chili cook-off, which will take place Saturday afternoon.

Those with a chili recipe that is unique, hot or packed full of flavor are encouraged to enter. Judges begin the tasting at 4.

After the chili cookoff judging is complete, the Porcelain Busdrivers will take the stage for the Saturday night Festival Dance beginning at 5 p.m., which will be in the park this year for the first time.

On Sunday, all are invited to a community church service at 10:30 a.m. in the park, hosted by several area churches. Vendors will then open at 11 followed by carnival rides at noon.

The highlight of the day will be the grand parade, which starts at 1 p.m.

Units will head out from near the Dudley Hotel down Main Street and then up Broad Street to Triangle Park.

After the parade, Three of the parade’s musical units — the Hitmen, the Marilla Band and Northcoast Brass — will be performing under the tent for about an hour, playing approximately 20 minutes each.

Finally, at approximately 3 p.m., several lucky contestants have the opportunity to win some big bucks with a wind tunnel money machine, sponsored by Seneca Gaming. To have a chance to grab all you can, tickets will be sold during the weekend and drawn Sunday afternoon.

The Rotary Club of Ellicottville recently made a special presentation to the Alley Katz, a group of volunteers who plant and maintain the flowers and plants in the village. The plaque (right), which reads “In appreciation of all the past, present and future Alley Katz for a beautiful Ellicottville,” is located in the village park near the gazebo. Submitted photos.

Ellicottville Rotary Celebrates the Alley Katz

John Weismantel, the Rotary Club of Ellicottville President, made a special presentation to Debbie Yantomasi and a small group of the Alley Katz, of a bronze plaque recognizing the group for their great work in Ellicottville.

The Alley Katz are a group of volunteers that plant and maintain the flowers and plants in the village making our village look so great. They also decorate the gazebo with a tree and lights during the winter season.

John said that the Rotary Club loves their beautiful work and want to insure that their “labor of love” is recognized with this special plaque placed in the planter in front of the town hall. The Rotary Club also provides funding for this great group yearly to insure the Village is beautiful for our residents and visitors year round. “We feel that the Alley Katz do a great job for the Village and our Rotary Club feels privileged to help with their work,” said John. “We know that the extra donations made by individuals, businesses and organizations provide a supplement to the funding from the Village and the Town.” The Rotary Club and their Foundation provide funding and help to a number of our local organizations every year.
