There’s Nothin’ Like a County Fair It’s here and it’s everything you expected! The Cattaraugus County Fair got off to a terrific start on Monday and the anticipation is building for the big weekend ahead. Animal shows, amusement park-style rides, displays and competitions are features every day, of course, and all are included with the purchase of a general admission ticket ($10). But the excitement reaches fever pitch as the grandstand events (for additional fees) get started. On Friday, make your way to the grandstand to watch the Monster Mash Monster Truck Rally featuring BIGFOOT, Overkill Evolution, Higher Education, Bounty Hunter and Scarlett Bandit, plus the Kids Power Wheels Demolition Derby. It all starts at 7:30 p.m. but get there by 6 p.m. and hang out with the drivers and their vehicles for a pit party. On Saturday at 1 p.m., make plans to watch the same rigs compete again at another Monster Mash Monster Truck Rally, and then at 6:30 p.m., get ready for the USA EastSanctioned Big Rig Truck Pulling Series & Pro Stock Tractor Pull with 20,000 lb. semis, street legal semis and 4x4 trucks competing. Then celebrate the last day of the fair with the “World’s Largest Demolition Derby” (Sunday at 5 p.m.). Of course, the air will be filled with the aromas of the best fair food around, so come hungry and go home happy. See the fair schedule on page 9. Tips Up Restaurant is closing after 36 years and it’s the end of an era, to be sure. For owner Judy Roush, though, it’s also the start of her retirement, and for that she is grateful. “I’ve worked hard all my life, putting in 60-hour weeks at the restaurant. This business is very rewarding, but it also can be tiring,” she said. “I plan to take the next years to enjoy life and relax a little.

It all started in 1980 when Judy and Ken Roush purchased the former Herbie’s Derby at 32 Washington Street in Ellicottville. At the time, there were only a few other restaurants in the area – The Depot, the Silver Fox, the Birdwalk, and the former Crystal Palace and The Barn. At first they created a tavernstyle restaurant that catered to a wide assortment of folks – See Tips Up page 4

Welcome to Blueberry Season! By Colleen Mahoney

Blueberry season is back, and despite the dry summer, the harvest is good. With a handful of local blueberry farms in the area, spending a day picking the sweet and tart fruit is as easy as blueberries are delicious. According to the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council,

the blueberry season runs from April to October, with peak picking in the summer months. In Western New York, blueberries are most active from Aug. 1 through Sept. 10, says the New York Harvest Calendar. Locally, farms from Allegany to East Otto offer you-pick opportunities for See Blueberries page 9
