HoliMont Hires New General Manager In February, HoliMont General Manager Dave Riley announced his retirement, after 18 years. The Board of Directors started its search for a new leader and after a few weeks of interviews, they found their man.

Ed Youmans was hired in May and the club members and staff couldn’t be happier. Youmans comes to HoliMont with over 34 years of ski industry experience.

In 1984, Youmans got his start as a lift attendant and hasn’t looked back since. He has held key positions with ski areas in the East and West, most recently as Vice President of Mountain Operations at Purgatory Resort in Durango, Colorado.

With a strong background in ski operations both in the office and on the slopes, Youmans hopes to share his knowledge and mentor the staff

An evening of Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, wooing Lady Ann will be presented in a delightful performance under the stars when William Shakespeare’s “Richard III” is performed at 8 p.m. Aug. 10 at the downtown gazebo in Ellicottville.

The free performance, sponsored by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce and the

Tri-County County Arts Council, will draw on the talents of the Shake on the Lake Shakespearean troupe of Silver Lake.

Brian McFadden, executive director of the Ellicottville Chamber, said the troupe has been bringing the “bard’s pieces to Western and Central New York since 2012.”

One of the hottest tickets in town featuring an up-and-coming country music star didn’t disappoint Tuesday, as Kane Brown performed to a sellout crowd at the Cattaraugus County Fair.

While casual country music fans may recognize his two most well-known hits, “What Ifs” and “Heaven,” plenty of those in attendance knew his deeper tracks and sang along in a high octane show that never lost its momentum.

“There’s no better place to be on a Tuesday than Little Valley, baby,” he said to a crowd after his first few songs, including “Used to Love You Sober,” one of his first hits before he even signed a record deal.

Brown has risen through the early ranks of country music stardom, courtesy of an avid Facebook following, by performing covers by Chris Young and George Strait before writing his own material. For an artist with a relatively short career and little time on stage, Brown seemed like a natural — interacting often with the crowd by grabbing fans’ hands and telling stories about his life in rural Georgia.

“The Cold Spot” featured one such story, a tribute to the name of his greatgrandfather’s business that closed after big-box stores took over in the area. Upon his request, cell phone flashlights lit up the area in a tribute to his great-grandfather while he performed it.

He also performed a handful of tracks off his upcoming album, including “Home Sick” and “Short Skirt Weather,” the latter of which he referred to as a

part-two to Tim McGraw’s “I Like It, I Love It,” which was a childhood favorite.

Also part of the concert was a myriad of noncountry songs — including “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy and “Ms. Jackson”

by OutKast — that for a few moments seemed to turn the concert into a dance club.

“His style is definitely not completely country,” said Diane Spring, of Allegany, before the show.

“He looks a little different.

He is definitely his own.

He broke out of the mold of country, which is nice. His voice is amazing.”

She had front row seats — which turned into standing room only positions right in front of the stage — along with her sister, Donna Stady, and five other family members and close friends.

Stady, who has attended the last several concerts at the fair, said she was first made aware of Brown by her daughter, Amanda, who has been a fan since Brown was covering songs on Facebook.

“She listens and I just listen right along,” she said, noting she landed the front row seats by waiting in line

at the fair’s office when tickets first went on sale.

Opening for Brown was Smithfield, a duo from Texas comprised of Trey Smith and Jennifer Fielder.

“We got to say to say, growing up in Texas, Trey and I never knew there were so many country fans in New York,” Fielder said.

“There are, aren’t there?

You guys are proving us wrong tonight.”

Along with a handful of originals — including “Nothing But the Night,” a song that has gotten airplay on SiriusXM’s country station — the band performed a collection of covers.

Fielder explained she comes from a country music background and Smith has roots more in rock ‘n’ roll, and their covers verified it by alternating between ’90s hits by Aerosmith, Shania Twain, Goo Goo Dolls and Faith Hill.

The country music entertainment continued Wednesday when the Charlie Daniels Band visited the fair grandstand stage for the first time since 2007.

Health & Fitness: Boxing Seminars

Take ‘A Talk on the Wildside’ at the Nannen Arboretum

The public is invited to enjoy a personal encounter with wildlife when Hawk Creek Wildlife Center presents “A Talk on the Wildside” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Nannen Arboretum, 28 Parkside Drive in Ellicottville.

Admission is $5 and children under 5 are admitted free.

Refreshments will be served.

Hawk Creek Wildlife Center was founded in 1987 and is located in East Aurora.

The center’s mission is to educate, empower and preserve so all will thrive together. They inspire minds to become environmental stewards and conserve wildlife to fulfill the circle of life for generations to come.

Visitors have the opportunity to meet an eagle up close and learn about its habitat, behavior, diet and breeding.

The center houses a diverse, global collection of raptors, mammals and reptiles.

Through educational programs, they instill respect for nature and her laws and promote stewardship of the planet. In addition, they support endangered species through their collaborative partnerships and vital breeding programs.

This program is another in the series of educational programs offered by the Nannen Arboretum.

Recently, a gentleman named Joseph Backus dropped in at my studio.

Joseph is a boxing instructor from Little Valley and was interested in providing Boxing Seminars to boys and girls ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-15 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during the month of August at the Ellicottville Village Park.

Sessions for ages 5-7 will be held from Aug. 6 to 10; ages 8-10 will be held from Aug.13 to 17; ages 11-13 will be held from Aug. 20 to 24; and sessions for ages 1415 will be held from Aug. 27 to 31.

I thought this was an amazing idea. My youngest son, Niklas, used to box in Salamanca and absolutely loved the hard work and training that went along with this sport. Niklas was only about eight years old and never once “boxed” but instead, he learned discipline and respect from the practices. He looked forward to working hard and was drenched with sweat

each time I picked him up.

Niklas only stopped because that gym shut down and relocated.

However, I know boxing for kids is a controversial topic. Professional medical bodies call for its outright banning while fighters and trainers argue that the benefits of boxing far outweigh any risks.

If you’re a parent and can’t decide if you should let your child learn boxing, this article is designed to present facts fairly so you can make an informed decision.

Much of boxing training is focused on bag and mitt drills, body-weight exercises, jumping rope and jogging.

Kids don’t spar frequently (if at all), and there’s no expectation for them to fight.

If and when sparring takes place, it has to be approved by their coach, take place under supervision and while wearing headgear, gum shield, groin guard and sparring gloves. Parents should also be reminded that sparring isn’t fighting.

The objective of sparring is to practice new techniques and styles on a moving target. Power is reduced to around 50 percent and when combined with the protective equipment worn, sparring rarely results in injuries.

Even without ever stepping foot into a ring,

the vigorous training and challenging nature of boxing leads to kids developing incredible confidence in themselves.

Boxing is a great confidence builder for kids that have low self-esteem as a result of bullying. Through the small wins in training, these kids build their confidence while learning how to defend themselves.

As a consequence, they’re no longer an “easy target” and find they get in fewer fights in the playground and on the street.

Boxing can play a huge part in shaping an individual’s character, especially when they’re young and highly impressionable. The values learned in boxing continue to have a positive influence on a person’s life regardless of whether they continue the sport or not.

There is no doubt that boxing has an aggressive nature – it has its roots in fighting, after all. However, the purpose of Joseph’s seminars is not to promote fighting, but instead to educate our youth on the elements that make a strong boxer and human being — respect, discipline and a strong work ethic.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS ECS Students March to Their Own Beat

She stood, feet bare, ankles encircled in jingly bells, proudly admiring the fold-out tables covered with her collection. She had placed them there with the help of her granddaughter; each drum, tambourine, and rain stick a story yet to be told. Her purple-feathered earrings coloring the beige of the Ellicottville Memorial Library’s activity room, she awaited 4 o’clock with the excited impatience of the truly passionate.

Based out of Olean, Faith Tanner-Thrush specializes in drum circles.

From corporate retreats to community workshops, Tanner-Thrush uses her love of rhythm to unite, educate, and inspire. That day, Faith readied herself for the group of boisterous ECS students that comprise the Ellicottville Young Writers’ and Illustrators’ Club. Quiet but commanding, Faith described each drum with the care of a loving mother. The hoop drums, pieces of hide stretched

over a cross-section of sticks, were a big hit among the students. Their favorite, a beautifully painted mid-size drum, was made from the skin of a true buffalo. Faith explained the history of the tambourines, rain sticks, and djembes, allowing each child to sample its sounds. The most interesting piece was an envelope of steamed bark filled with stones.

Now hardened, it rattled hauntingly.

Cross-legged in a lopsided circle, the students took their percussion equipment and banged away, as loudly and as quickly as possible.

Without speaking, Faith slowly thumped a heartbeat on her hoop drum. The group followed suit, and soon, they were singing and playing along to “The Habitat Song.”

Jackson Kruszynski, having attended all of the Library’s summer workshops so far, was particularly enthused with the drumming. An avid percussionist himself, Jackson brought his own snare drum to contribute

to the cacophony. “Today was definitely my favorite workshop,” said the fifth grader, “because I got to show off my passion and talent.”

Aaron LoGiudice, a seventh-grader and trumpeter, was obsessed with the hoop drum. “It’s just so loud, and deep, and awesome!” he screamed while hitting the drum with all his might.

After the noise died down, Faith had the time to answer some questions about her passion. “I started drumming to reconnect with my heritage,” says Faith, who has Native American roots.

“It was a solo practice at first. At the time, I was working at Camp New Horizons teaching traditional weaving and beading classes. Then, they asked me to do some drumming workshops. It was the perfect opportunity to expand my hobby.”

She went on to say, “I love to drum because it’s a chance for me to reconnect to the heartbeat and the Creator,” she continues.

outdoors, to feel connected to the Earth.”

Faith added that now whenever she travels, she looks to expand her drum collection instead of purchasing “touristy” souvenirs. “I have pieces from all over the world,” she says.

Faith, also known as She Who Hugs A Lot, uses her classes to spread her love to the world. “The kids always teach me new things,” she smiles. “They always have new rhythms, new ways to listen and

play.”

This workshop, facilitated by the Ellicottville Memorial Library and the Rotary Club, was the third in a series of six this summer.

Designed to tie into the “Library Rocks” Summer Reading Program, the workshops invoke the musical creativity of all who attend. “So far we’ve crafted homemade guitars, used everyday items to make drums, and participated in our very own drum circle. Abby

DeChane also came in to teach us the basics of guitar-playing,” says Katie Benatovich, workshop leader. “I love to see what our young minds can cook up.”

“These workshops aren’t just to tickle the creativity bone,” says Benatovich. “They’re also meant to bridge gaps, inspire communication, and teach teamwork. These workshops are influencing and shaping the young leaders of today and tomorrow.”

It’s Showtime for NY Seniors in Big 30 Classic

The Franklinville/ Ellicottville football team’s then-undefeated season ended in November at New Era Field, but as it turned out, the Titans’ coaches weren’t done yet with six seniors.

F/E coach Chad Bartoszek and staff got one more summer with six recent graduates from a senior class he refers to as “the first Titans,” as they entered high school as freshmen in the first year of the Franklinville/ Ellicottville varsity and junior varsity football merger. Those six — quarterback Brock Blecha, running back Griffin Chudy, wide receiver Austin Grinols, defensive tackle Walter Woodarek, defensive end Dakota Olson and cornerback Deric Leiper — are all set to play in Saturday’s 45th Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic, formerly the Don Raabe Charities Classic, in Bradford, Pa. For Bartoszek, who will coach his sixth season (fifth under the merger) this fall, the timing couldn’t be better to serve as New York’s head coach for the first time.

“They’re all doing a great job,” Bartoszek said of the six Titans. “It’s been cool to have them one more game.”

Bartoszek coaches the NY offense, while assistant Mark Blecha handles the defense. Fellow F/E assistants Harley Butler and Jason Marsh, the former Salamanca head coach, help with the lines and Aaron Hill, a former SHS assistant who works for USA Football, helps the defensive backs.

Bartoszek said the chance for coaches to work in groups who only play one way (only offense or defense) has been the greatest unexpected benefit in his first practices with the team. But teaching terminology has been the biggest challenge so far.

Brock Blecha and Frewsburg quarterback Trent Gray will lead the two offensive units, which typically alternate every other series under the Big 30 format. F/E’s Big 30

representatives essentially got a four-year head start on the playbook for Saturday’s game, while the rest of the roster learned the Titans’ terminology.

“Having Brock and a couple of our Titan guys there makes things easier,” Bartoszek said after practice Friday, July 27, in Salamanca. “They’re able to help the others and they’re able to jump right in. It’s second nature for them. But Trent Gray is capable. He’s going to be He’s going to be running his own group, running his own team and he’s definitely stepping up. It’s just I feel for those new guys that have got to go through this all over again and re-learn things in two weeks. We’re trying to be patient but we’re moving at a really quick pace as coaches.”

Gray, the son of longtime Frewsburg coach Terry Gray, who led the New York squad for the 2014 Big 30 game, played his senior year in the new Randolph/ Frewsburg merger.

“I’m real proud of the way that Trent’s handling it,” Bartoszek said, “because he has the toughest position of anyone on the team right now because he has to run as a quarterback in a brand new offense and he has to know everything. All the other players have to know a little bit, but he’s gotten everything. And he’s handling it like someone who’s got a job to do.”

Bartoszek liked what he saw when he first met the team for Big 30 Media Day in May and that’s translated through two-plus weeks of practice.

“It’s a fun group,” he said. “We have athletes all over the place. We’re getting a little thinner in terms of our numbers, we’ve lost a few guys, but overall, a real fun group, coachable group. We’ve been having a good time at practice, competing. I still don’t think the realization that we’re going to play a game here in a week has hit them yet, but I think maybe next week they’ll start to realize it’s about time to go.”

Salamanca will have two representatives in the NY roster, wide receiver Nick Johnson and linebacker Braden Siebert.

From Cattaraugus-Little Valley are four players: wide receiver Austin Baker, guard Andrew Minnekine and defensive ends Scott O’Donnell and Tim Ulinger.

For one game, groups of former high school rivals join together on Saturday looking to take back a victory against Pennsylvania’s seniors.

“The guys are having fun together, I know that,” Bartoszek said. “It’s cool to go to these different schools, get meals, do all that stuff. I do know you can just see it, guys who work all day in the heat and then they’ve got to drive to practice. Some of these days can get long on them just like it is for the coaches. So we’ve had a couple dog days here where you can tell the kids are doggin’ it, they’re all working and doing different things. But they’re coming together, though: football brings you together.”

Other notes on Saturday’s game: • Saturday’s festivities begin with the annual Big 30 parade at 2:30 p.m. through Bradford, starting on Davis Street then proceed down Main Street to Mechanic Street. A tailgate party begins at 3:30 in the Parkway Field lot, gates open at 5 and kickoff at 7. Tickets are $7 for all.

— Pennsylvania referees are set to work this game, as the crew alternates each year with New York.

Pennsylvania will also be the home team, on the press box side of the field, after winning last year’s game.

• No alcohol or tobacco will be permitted on school grounds, including the parking lot and Callahan Park.

• Advance tickets are available at Man’s World and Northwest Savings Bank, both are on Main Street in downtown Bradford. Members of the Big 30 committee will also have tickets for sale.

CTE Cosmetology Students Tour Ellicottville Salons

Last week, the Ellicottville CTE BOCES cosmetology class toured Ellicottville salons, including the Ellicottville Salt Cave, The Edge Salon, Reflections, Oasis, Johnny the Barber, Rustix and Enix.

Instructor Tracy Guntrum explained that students need 1,000 hours to be licensed in New York State, and that even if they never miss a class, they still need additional hours. Because of this, the Center offers an optional 17-day/90 hour summer session, and some of this time is used to expose the students to salons. Prior to the Ellicottville tour, students were in

Springville checking out five salons there.

Guntrum said that the shop owners, managers and stylists had to go through the same training as the students, and that it’s a great learning experience. “It opens their eyes up,” she said, “It’s nice for (the students) to meet owners and stylists and to hear them reiterate what I tell them.” She added that it’s also a good opportunity for networking, as students must also take part in an internship.

CTE students hail from many area school districts, including Ellicottville, Springville, Randolph, Catt-Little Valley, Salamanca and Franklinville.

He said when Shake on the Lake performed “Romeo and Juliet” last year for the first time in front of the community at the gazebo it was wellreceived. McFadden said the acting group use costeffective, green production practices and have been known to use refurbished and repurposed items in their productions.

“Shake on the Lake also helps sponsors find ways to make performances low-cost to offer a higher accessibility to quality performances,” he explained. “The organization’s goals are creating a fun, familyfriendly, outdoor production of Shakespeare to high artistic standards.”

McFadden said the event is not intended to be a fundraiser, rather it is hoped to provide an evening of classic theater for the community.

night in the summer for six weeks,” he added. “This (Shake on the Lake) is one thing that we added last year that we really liked. We got a great crowd last year.

“We’re very underserviced in this community for this kind of thing,” he said of Shakespeare productions. “We get lots of music, lots of bands and arts and crafts, but we really don’t have this type of performance here.”

He said that can be attributed to the lack of an indoor venue in the community to accommodate such a performance.

“But outdoors at the gazebo is wonderful — especially when it’s dark out,” he continued. “Doing it in the evening is nice, too, because they down-light it on the grass so it’s really cool. Their version is a little bit irreverent — this isn’t the version you see in Carnegie Hall.

“This is really meant for the average person to enjoy Shakespeare,” he commented.

Tina Hastings, executive director of the arts council, said the agency is “again happy to co-sponsor” the event with the Ellicottville Chamber.

“These types of public art events are such a great opportunity for small communities to experience live performances and come together as a community to celebrate the vibrancy that art brings to our lives,” Hastings remarked. “I was able to attend last year’s presentation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and everyone loved it. Tri-County Arts is pleased to be a part of bringing the Shake on the Lake Theatre Company to Ellicottville this summer for what is sure to be another wonderful night.”

On a final bit of advice, McFadden asks visitors to bring blankets, chairs and picnic baskets to make the evening more comfortable and complete.

Benefit Planned for West Valley Graduate Following Mid-May Accident

As a 2009 West Valley graduate continues to recover from a mid-May car accident that has her still at Erie County Medical Center, a group of friends have organized a benefit to help pay for her medical costs.

Lindsey Thomas, a district manager at Vector Marketing, was T-boned on Broadway Road in Alden on May 18, according to her mother, Brenda Thomas.

“She’s a miracle and she’s come a long way,” her mother said during an interview last week.

The early days at ECMC included Lindsey enduring a coma for about two weeks.

The accident necessitated surgery to remove a clot from her brain, and Lindsey suffered a lacerated spleen and broken pelvis.

Now she’s been in physical therapy for the last three weeks and questions remain about her eyesight after recently enduring some blurry vision.

“She’s got a long way to go and we still have to figure out what is going on with her sight, but other than that she is doing pretty good,” Brenda said. “She has recognized everyone who has come in. That’s a miracle in itself.

“She is here, that’s all that matters,” she added.

“One day at a time. We have some good days and then we’ll have a setback.”

About 50 miles south of ECMC, Lindsey’s friends have organized a benefit from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the West Valley Fire Hall on Route 240. Scheduled to be in attendance are Jake and the Fat Man BBQ, live music from Nick Kody and Lydia Herren, a 50/50 raffle, a Chinese auction and more.

“With many surgeries and obstacles to overcome, (Lindsey) is projected to remain in the hospital for many weeks if not months,” some details on the event’s Facebook page read. “Help us grow the funds to help her on her road to recovery and help aid her through finding her new normal.”

Tickets are $12 at the door for food. The meal includes pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and coleslaw. There are also $10 pre-sale tickets available for large ticket giveaway items that include a Kenmore Grill package, adirondack glider and 55-inch TV, among other items.

Brenda repeatedly thanked all of those who have shown support during Lindsey’s recovery and said she “thinks it’s helped Lindsey 100 percent because knowing she still has everyone who cares has made a world of difference.”

“All the prayers helped and having everyone say such wonderful things has really helped her,” she added. “We really, really appreciate it. It’s all for Lindsay. She has a long road ahead of her.”

There is no definite timetable as to Lindsey’s stay at the hospital.

Lindsey had recently opened her own office in Fredonia and was working on getting an apartment there. Her family, with whom she had recently resided, lives in Delevan.

In addition to the benefit, there have been two online donation efforts that have raised more than a combined $19,000. They both still remain open — one on Facebook is called “Help for Lindsey” and the general public is invited to the GoFundMe drive by visiting gofundme.com/support-forlindsey-thomas.

Dave Elder explains that they have done this acoustic show exclusively at some private parties. Elder and Joe Rozler play acoustic guitar with a little accordion, while drummer and vocalist Mark Dixon plays a cajon drum. Unplugged and mobile, they will be able to come to guests’ table for special requests, adding to this memorable for the evening.

This event includes an expansive array of entrees provided by the best restaurants in the area.

Supported by both Sysco and US Foods, the local chefs will try to impress guests with their signature dish served at their individual stations. This year’s Italian theme menu is way over the top with many culinary surprises to treat those who attend.

A great Antipasto table, a seafood medley from John Harvard’s and seafood lasagna from Myer’s, as well as The Silver Fox’s Tuscan pork, are just a few of the 15 stations guests will enjoy. Attendees can eat as much as they like but should save room for the dessert table, where Watson’s Chocolates surround the extra special cakes, cookies and tarts created by chef Tom Kneeland.

Everyone loves the extensive silent auction, as there is always a great bargain to be had, and the live auction usually features Sabres tickets, Bills tickets and Cutco knives, as well as many more great bargains.

Sky High is made up of three components: the Aerial Park, the Climbing Forest and the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster.

The Aerial Park, the largest of its kind in New York state and third largest in the U.S., combines a series of platforms and bridges built in a four-acre section of the woods near the resort’s Tannenbaum Lodge. The Aerial Park includes 142 platforms, 170 elements and 43 ziplines, with the tallest platform at 68 feet and the longest zip line measuring 350 feet. Those ages five and up can enjoy the Climbing Forest, which is like a 3D version of a rock wall, and only one of three in the country. There are 10

trees outfitted with colorcoded climbing holds and the difficulty ranges from very easy (yellow) to very challenging (purple). Each climber is fitted with a harness that is clipped into an Auto Belay system.

Once a climber reaches the top of the tree at up to 45 feet, they just let go and the belay system slowly lowers them to the ground.

There is also a kids’ area with two trees where the youngest climbers can climb about six feet up and climb back down.

Be CCLAA’s Guest at ‘Beauty and the Beast’ This Weekend

A tale as old as time is being told by the Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association (CCLAA) starting this weekend with their performance of “Beauty and the Beast.”

The CCLAA and a cast of area performers will bring Disney’s 1991 film to life at the Ray Evans Seneca Theater starting Aug. 3 with this stage production of the classic story during six performances over the next two weekends.

“Every theater company needs to do something every year that is very popular,” explained Todd Wager, the show’s director. Last summer CCLAA did the popular show “Grease” followed by “Pippin” this winter, which he said is a lesser known production.

“We have to do something to balance it all out.

Something for everybody,” he said. “When you do a Disney musical, you have to do ‘Beauty and the Beast.’”

Based on the story by French novelist GabrielleSuzanne Barbot de Villeneuve published in 1740, “Beauty and the Beast” tells the story of a prince transformed into a beast who seeks to return to human form by earning the love of the girl he has captured in his castle.

As one of the most well-known musicals and movies by kids, Wagner said they had nearly 80 people audition for the show, many of which were completely

new to theater.

“For the first time since I’ve been here we actually had to turn people away,” he said. “But it’s great to see that kind of turn out.”

However, between the cast, crew and orchestra, about 80 people are still involved in the production, Wagner said, which makes it CCLAA’s biggest show since “Ragtime” in 2010.

“Right from the beginning it’s been very easy. Just say the rules, regulations and consequences, and everyone has cooperated,” he said.

“Especially since we have such a good balance of veterans and new people, so they know how it works around here.”

Different from previous years, Wagner said the rehearsal schedule went to one less day per week but they stayed one hour longer each night.

With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, the musical showcases songs such as “Belle,” “Be Our Guest” and “Beauty and the Beast” all played by a 25-person-plus orchestra.

“The highlight for me has been how amazing the orchestra is,” Wagner said.

“I’d say it’s probably the best orchestra we’ve had in here.”

To accommodate the size of the orchestra needed for the sound they wanted, the crew removed the first three rows of seats in the house.

Wagner said conductor Ruth Fuller will essentially be in the middle of the

orchestra with musicians in front of her and behind her, including a large section of strings and tipinis that will stand out.

“You want that sound, that big Broadway sound,” he explained. “Even the big orchestras on Broadway now aren’t this big.

Musicians are expensive, so it’s a privilege to see this type of orchestra.”

Among the more challenging aspects has been completing the large, intricate castle set, which includes an upper walkway across the stage and a double staircase.

“It was finally built a couple days ago,” Wagner said. “It went from a heartshaped staircase to a circular staircase. We had to have the right person to be able to build it and know how to with math.”

Because of the popularity of the show and having to remove three rows of seats, Wagner said it’s likely some of the shows will sell out and suggests pre-ordering tickets online or showing up to the theater earlier than normal.

“It’s every child’s dream to find that right one and fall in love,” he added, “and Disney does it best.”

“Beauty and the Beast” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3, 4, 10 and 11 and at 2 p.m. Aug. 5 and 12 at the Ray Evans Seneca Theater on Main Street.

ASPHS’s Anderson Award

The Lance Anderson family and the Allegany State Park Historical Society (ASPHS) recently announced Walter Muchowski Jr., of Hamburg, as the winner of the sixth annual Anderson Award. Muchowski served in the United States Army from June 1976 to June 1979 as a helicopter repairman.

The award will be

presented to Muchowski at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 during Allegany State Park’s hootenanny at the amphitheater on the Quaker side of the park. Along with his immediate family, he will be able to enjoy a weeklong stay at a time of his choosing during this summer’s camping season.

Don Block, vice president of ASPHS, said the award is in memory

of Lance Anderson’s late father, Dade Anderson, who was a park ranger at Allegany for 36 years and the namesake of the park’s Anderson Trail. He said it’s for a chosen Disabled Veteran from any branch of service who has served from the Gulf War to current wars. It’s open to all United States disabled veterans, male and female, with families.
