“Tuscan Moon,” Ellicottville’s favorite upscale, end-of-summer dinner party, is back again.

As one of the most anticipated cocktail parties of the year, the fundraiser will take place Saturday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. at John Harvard’s Cabana Bar & Pool Complex at Holiday Valley.

This year’s events is sold out.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ellicottville, this event features a delicious assortment of food, live music and auctions.

The party starts with great hors d’oeuvres from Katy’s Café and Katy’s Fly-In, John Harvard’s Brew House and Villaggio served by student volunteers from Ellicottville Central School (ECS).

Additionally, students from University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s Hospitality Program will be helping in the kitchen and at the food stations this year.

Familiar faces to the ski and snowboard community in Ellicottville are opening a second location in East Aurora in the longtime home of an established ski shop.

The husband-and-wife team of Miguel Azcarate and Kimberly Reading, owners of Mud Sweat ‘n’ Gears on Monroe Street in Ellicottville, recently purchased the former Aurora Action Sports/The Ski Rack on Main Street in East Aurora and plan to open the location at the end of this month.

The purchase came following the retirement of Aurora Action Sports’ previous owner, Dale Schaefer.

“We really looked at the East Aurora community and the southtowns and thought it was kind of a nobrainer,” Reading said about purchasing the store. “We just saw huge potential. I think the demographics seem to fit well with our business model.

Outdoor things to do this weekend

1. Make branch sculptures at Griffis Sculpture ParK This summer, Griffis Sculpture Park will host free outdoor activities every Saturday at noon, and this weekend, guests can enjoy creating unique branch sculptures. Afterwards, park goers can also take in the 250 sculptures that reside throughout the trails of the park, making it the United States largest outdoor sculpture park.

EARS to Offer Adoptable Pets at Sunday’s Cocktails and Canines

As one of many foster families who works with Empire Animals Rescue Society (EARS), a rescue based in Salamanca, I’ve seen first-hand all the work and countless hours of volunteer time that goes into saving animals.

Since my family began fostering for them about three years ago, we have had about 20 dogs come and go from our home (OK, so two of them stayed!). Each dog has a story. Some have come from high-kill shelters in Kentucky, taken the “puppy express” up to the southern tier, which is a network of drivers who each take a car-full of animals along a specific leg of the journey, and then pass them on to the next person. Some have come from bad home situations right here in WNY. Some have had their owners pass away and are left homeless. Whatever the reason they have ended up with EARS, they are welcomed, loved and placed with a foster family until they can be matched with their person and their

forever home.

Residing with a foster family instead of being at a traditional shelter allows the potential adopters to get some great information before they make a decision. Fosters are able to give many more details such as habits (Do they do well in a crate?

Are they house trained?), behavior (Are they good with other dogs and cats?

Do they like younger kids?) and personality (Do they like to snuggle? Are they high energy?) There are so many factors to consider and having that reliable information from the foster family can help in finding just the right pet.

EARS volunteers not only coordinate with a large network of foster families, but they also organize entire “fixing” days when they take car loads of animals who are in their care to be spayed or neutered at local vets.

Since they also have a presence at many other local events, sometimes there are two events going on simultaneously. For instance, at last weekend’s Allegany State Park Beach Party, where EARS had a table set up and several adoptable pets, it was also a day to take other animals to be fixed, so organizers

of both had to figure out which animals were going where and who was taking them.

People ask me all the time, “Aren’t you sad when they get adopted?”

Of course, we get attached to some of them. But seeing them light up someone else’s face and seeing that instant bond when someone meets their new dog for the first time makes it all worth it.

Over the years, I’ve become Facebook friends with many of the people who have adopted our fosters, and get to see them grow up. Just last week, a friend of mine who adopted our foster dog Hugo (and who sends me pics of him all the time!) sent me a picture of another one of our foster dogs, Lacey, who was adopted by someone I didn’t know, saying they were at a pool party and got to talking and realized they both got their fosters from us! Another one of our fosters was adopted by our neighbor, and another one was adopted by my sister. So, many times, saying goodbye just means “I’ll see you at your new home!”

If you are in the market for a new pet, EARS always has many puppies, kittens, dogs and cats available. If you get your application filled out ahead of time and approved, when you find “the one” it’s a quick process.

Thinking about adopting? On Sunday, Aug. 26, Cocktails and Canines will be held at the Ellicottville Distillery (5462 Robbins Rd., Ellicottville) from 2-5 p.m. This is another great opportunity to meet many adoptable animals, talk to their fosters and learn about how you can adopt.

Plus, you can check out the distillery, who offers corn and apple distilled vodka and corn distilled whisky, made from locally grown produce.

Town of Little Valley to Celebrate Bicentennial EBC to Introduce Commemorative ‘1818’ Vienna Ale for Event

The town of Little Valley is celebrating its 200th anniversary with some oldfashioned fun mixed with education about the town’s history.

The public is invited to the bicentennial celebration, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Aug. 26.

Organizer Jillian Koch said 17 crafters and vendors are scheduled to be set up from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday at Bicentennial Park on the corner of Erie and 8th streets. She said they range from food vendors and clothing to handmade items and maple syrup — a little bit of everything.

And, Ellicottville Brewing Company will be introducing a commemorative Vienna Ale “1818” for the celebration.

Koch said Case Cutlery has arranged for an antique knife appraiser from Virginia to be at the event, so she encourages people to bring their antique Case, Kinfolk or Cattaraugus

cutlery to be appraised.

Local bands and solo acts are scheduled to perform intermittent, live music in the Park Gazebo from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. At 9 p.m. that night, more bands will continue at Hughes Hotel Bar & Restaurant and Bear Brick Bar & Restaurant.

The United Methodist Church will host a pancake breakfast on Saturday at 9 a.m. and, afterward, the Congregational Church will host a quilt show and have historical memorabilia on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Linda McCubbin, director of the Memorial Library of Little Valley, said the library will have a hot dog stand and a book sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

She said the Cattaraugus County Museum has lent historical memorabilia that will be on display at the library until Sept. 30.

Among the memorabilia is an original poster from 1899 advertising the Cattaraugus County Fair when Teddy Roosevelt, then governor

of New York, attended the fair and delivered the annual address to local residents.

“Historical readings began at the library in May and will continue to the end of the year,” she said.

“On (Friday) Aug. 24 at 7 p.m., Brad Lockwood will be speaking on the knife industry in Little Valley.”

To pay tribute to the trolley system that once ran through the village, a free tour via trolley will be available from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Narrated

by Brad Lockwood, local author and historical enthusiast, the tour will travel throughout the village to showcase the Town of Little Valley’s history. Pick up and drop off location will be at Park Place.

The Alumni Room at the former building of Little Valley Central School on Rock City Street will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

An open house will be held at the Little Valley Fire Department from noon to 6 p.m. with more historical pictures on

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, the Citizens Advocating Memorial Preservation (C.A.M.P.) will host the 33rd annual Reunion of Descendants of the 154th New York Volunteer Infantry on the grounds of the Memorial and Historical Building at the corner of Court and Seventh streets.

The reunion event will include the unveiling of a miniature replica of the regiment’s Gettysburg monument.

The bicentennial parade kicks off at 3 p.m. Sunday with Grand Marshall Lester Bishop. McCubbin said the parade will assemble at the fairgrounds at 2:30 p.m. and proceed down Court Street to Main Street, where it will take a left and go to Railroad Avenue to 3rd Street, then to the fire hall.

The bicentennial weekend will end Sunday with a closing ceremony at the Little Valley Volunteer Fire Department at 3:30 p.m. when State Senator

Catharine M. Young (R-Olean) is scheduled to present the Town of Little Valley with a proclamation to commemorate its bicentennial.

Koch said the Bicentennial Committee is very excited to host this event. They hope area residents will be able to attend and enjoy the showcasing of the town’s history.

“We would like to thank the community and our local businesses for their support and participation in this event. I feel that having the community involved in the planning phase we are able to have a little something for everyone,” she said.

“We are all looking forward to this event and hope our residents find it interesting and entertaining.”

ECS NEWS & SPORTS Newly Minted Seniors Attend ECS Ice Cream Social

With the school year just around the corner, Ellicottville seniors are gearing up for their final year at ECS. At the Senior Ice Cream Social on Aug. 20, the class of 2019 took their first true steps on the long road to graduation.

After indulging in some delicious ice cream, the crowd filled out their last Code of Conduct agreement and listened as the first guest speaker took the stand.

Middle and High School Principal Erich Ploetz prefaced the evening with a few words of advice. “This year will be the fastest one of your scholastic lives,” he said. “Make sure you don’t let life distract you from the joy of it. Before you know it, you will right back in this cafeteria, trying on caps and gowns.” It was an alarming thought for many.

Next up was Carolyn Bauer, the resource teacher and yearbook advisor.

An enviably organized woman, she has the senior yearbook process down to pat. Starting junior year, she begins to remind the senior class of important deadlines and costs associated with the senior section of the yearbook.

From senior bust shots to student biographies, she makes sure this yearbook shrine to seniors is absolutely perfect. Though for yearbook staff, it is the most painful section of the yearbook, and Bauer runs a tight ship. “Because none of us,” she reiterated that night, “want our yearbook in August.”

Seniors Mal Chamberlain, Sierra Maybee, and Linnea Jimerson standing in front of their brand new lockers Guidance counselor Tammy Eddy took the time to explain (and warn) of the impending amount of work awaiting seniors their final year. Applications have to be filled out, SAT scores sent to colleges, and transcripts forwarded to accredited institutions.

School cost has to be calculated, FAFSA IDs created, and early decision dates adhered to. To help with this, Eddy’s door is always open for any questions or concerns. The school is also hosting a financial aid night on Oct. 9 to further assist families in the process.

Lastly, class of 2019 advisor Matt Finn, along with co-advisor Dave McCann, addressed the crowd. “Senior year comes with a lot of costs,” Finn addressed the parents, “and I will make sure to let your children know as

ahead of time as possible.”

He encouraged the group to make the most of their last year by attending senior nights for sports and participating in school functions. He vowed to use Remind (a school communication app) to remind the seniors of any upcoming deadlines or fun activities.

Seniors are also in charge of graduation, prom and a senior trip, which requires a lot of agreeing on the class’s part. “This class has a lot of different personalities,” said Finn.

“It’ll be hard for us all to agree on something.”

Currently, senior class president Meganne Chapman is working on a trip to Ocean City and Baltimore.

Superintendent Bob Miller has borne witness to dozens of ice cream socials in his years as a school

administrator. “My favorite part of the whole senior process,” said Miller, “is watching them graduate.

To see the look on their faces, knowing that their hard work has paid off, is the most rewarding part of my job. The look of joy on someone who walks across that stage, someone who in 9th grade didn’t think they’d make it, is electrifying. I can see some of that excitement in this class already.”

Senior locker selection, a competition of Olympic caliber, followed the information session.

With a little shoving, everyone (more or less) got the locker they wanted.

Newly-printed schedules in hand, the senior class of 2019 left the building with an air of excitement and nervousness. Who knows what senior year would unfold?

Two Ellicottville Graduates Receive CRCF Scholarships Two recent graduates received scholarships for Ellicottville Central School students from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Lisa Krotz received the Kristen Hintz Memorial Scholarship Award for $1,000.

This scholarship, which came under Foundation management in 2017, is named in memory of Kristen Nicole Hintz, who was a senior at Ellicottville Central School and at the top of her class when a tragic auto accident cut her life short Lisa Krotz in 2000. A leader in her class, she was a multi-sport athlete who always gave her best and persevered through difficult situations. Her kindness touched all she met.

Students applying for this scholarship must include an essay that describes and explains what characteristics and qualities he/she possesses that makes him/her deserving of this scholarship, Kirklind Kaleta including information that reflects the how he/she demonstrate kindness and perseverance, qualities for which Kristen was known.

Krotz will attend the University at Buffalo to study biomedical sciences.

Kirklind Kaleta received the Paul and Mary Janowicz Memorial Scholarship for $500.

The Janowicz’s son-in-law and daughter, Paul and Elizabeth Hanson, established the Paul and Mary Janowicz Memorial Fund with the foundation in 2014.

Each year, the fund makes possible a scholarship for students at Ellicottville Central School, where Janowicz served as a bus driver. The Paul and Mary Janowicz Memorial Scholarship is given to graduating seniors who demonstrated academic excellence and plan to attend a two- or four-year college.

Kaleta will study engineering science at Jamestown Community College.

Father, son reconnect over writing Holland’s memoir

Wally Holland wanted to get his lifetime’s worth of remarkable stories on print.

Good thing he had a writer for a son.

The product of many hours on the phone between Wally Sr., in Ellicottville, and his son, Wally Jr., in Cambridge, Mass., “Dear God, What's on the Second Floor?: A Memoir” went for sale on Amazon on July 5 and is currently listed at $13 in paperback.

At 282 pages, it’s a brisk read through Holland Sr.’s 84 years on earth, from growing up in Manchester, England and evacuating during World War II to his life in Ellicottville, where he resides and currently works as the oldest soccer official in New York State.

“I don’t remember much of the city before the war,” Holland writes early in the book. “I was five when the war began, and six when the bombings began in Manchester — by the time I was old enough to remember home, I’d left.”

In between Manchester and Ellicottville, well, a lot happened.

The book’s back page summary reads: “In the last eighty-four years, Wally Holland has learned a trade, tended bar, masqueraded as a horseman, dodged the occasional wedding engagement and stray bullet, appeared to no great acclaim in film, tangled with a handful of belly dancers, compared jumpsuits with a Beatle, became implicated in at

least one tavern brawl with a wee man named Tichy, flaunted (and then lost) a marvelous head of black curly hair, semibefriended an astronaut, been evacuated from one war and volunteered for a second, come quickly to terms with more than one armed and hostile British subject, and disagreed with a swan over a baguette.

“He has two sons, three grandsons, and no complaints.

“He is presently the oldest soccer official in New York State.

“This is his memoir, perhaps the most eagerly anticipated literary work of the last hundred years.”

As cheeky as that last line sounds, Holland Sr. insists he never approached the project seeking fame or recognition.

“It was never a blownup affair like 'Please pay attention to me,'” he said.

“It was none of that crap.

It was just something that I never realized and even now it's just dawning on me, I never realized that when I consider the people I have met, for instance working with the top comedians in England in the ‘60s and I was just a waiter in Cabaret. But they would use me as a foil, 'Excuse me?' 'Yes, sir.'”

From volunteering to fight in Korea (he never saw conflict while stationed in Japan), appearing in a movie with Alan Ladd, working for British European Airways (BEA), going on the Love Boat, meeting George Harrison and Pattie Boyd and

meeting his wife, Kathleen, who passed away in 2002, Holland had so many stories that acquaintances often suggested he write his life story.

“It's so much, what has happened to me,” he said.

“Getting into why I wanted to do the book, (it's that) so many people in the bars had said, 'Wally, you've got to do a book, because it's so interesting if you're telling the truth.'”

But Holland, having evacuated home at a young age, had only four years of school growing up.

His sons, however, work as a writer and attorney, respectively.

After starting work on the project, Holland turned to his son to help complete between 18 and 24 months ago, Wally Jr. said.

“He had been working with a writer in Ellicottville and for a variety of reasons, they weren't able to complete the project,” said Holland Jr. “We'd been talking about it and he was expressing (that he was) upset and he was disappointed that he wasn't going to be able to (go forward) and I offered. I'd finished working on my last book and had had a bit of time and I thought, oh, I could take a couple of months and finish this for him. And uh, that turned out to be a grotesque underestimate of the amount of time it would take.”

An MIT alum, Wally Jr. has written several fiction and non-fiction books, including one for the 33 1/3 music series on Phish’s A Live One. He said the

writing process started with recording hours of phone calls of his father’s life recollections in storytelling form.

“The first thing I told him was I wanted it to be in his voice and not mine,” Holland Jr. said. “My writing style is very, very different certainly from my dad's speaking style and you know, the same as my own speaking style, is very different than his.

“So the idea was I wanted to get as close to his way of telling stories as possible, both in terms of the structure of individual sentences, even the voice, but also in terms of how he connects stories.

“The book is in roughly chronological order but at some point it started to make sense to present them at times not so much disconnected as kind of meandering. They meander because his memory meanders. He's remembering being a boy and my dad, he's 84 but he has unbelievably vivid memories of almost 80 years ago and memories that are clearly very present for him, but they're also connected up with a lot of other memories from between now and then.”

The son recorded stories he may have heard growing up, but never in such detail, if at all.

“I haven't lived home for more than 20 years, so I see my dad at most a couple weeks a year,” he said. “So I didn't realize this when I took the job, but the most wonderful thing about it

was getting to finally hear in detail these stories that will let me understand my dad as an adult instead of, you know, when I was a boy.”

Holland Jr. said he particularly enjoyed hearing his father’s recollections of his mother as “the belle of the ball.”

“She was funny and sparkling and she's the center of every party,” Holland Jr. said. “And I just think of my mom as an English teacher who played the organ in church, and read every book in the public library and kept the family afloat financially.

“So that experience is so distant from my experience of her. It's been ... it's been an extraordinary

opportunity, a real gift to be able to work on it.”

The book is dedicated to Kathleen.

“Lucky is a word that should be on my tombstone, even to be this age now,” Holland Sr. said.

“I'll be 85 next birthday (April 8), it's very fortunate to be that way.”

Likewise, Wally Jr. is thankful for the opportunity to help his father relive his vivid memories.

“Everyone who can do a project like this with their older relatives, it is a gift to be able to do so,” Wally Jr. said. “I'm so grateful and I wish everybody had a chance to do something like this with a parent.”

EPD Officer-in-Charge: Busiest Summer in His Career

The Ellicottville police officer-in-charge told the town board last week this has been the busiest summer of his career in Ellicottville and will be putting three officers on duty on Saturday nights.

In his report during the Aug. 15 town board meeting, Auge also urged the board that the open container law, which was waived for the Jazz & Blues Festival earlier this month, either be on or off.

When there are part-time guys in Ellicottville, it is hard to keep them all properly informed, he said, adding he has no opinion on which direction the town or village goes but said they need to make a decision.

Auge also advised the board on a moveable electronic radar sign in the village, possibly on Jefferson Street, which can also display messages such as “thank you” or “slow down” depending on the speed of the vehicle in relation to the speed limit.

Also at the town board meeting last week, engineer Niles Pierson said commuters should look for construction and detour signs for culvert replacement on Poverty Hill Road, which will be closed for two to three days the week of Aug. 27.

The information came following the acceptance of bids for the Poverty Hill and Witch Hollow culverts from D&H Excavating for $29,999. There are still some easement concerns but those should be cleared up quickly.

Pierson also advised the board that the town/village should apply for the New York State Environmental Facilities Grant. The grant would allow for many of the updates that need to be made in the water infrastructure improvement project. The board approved two resolutions necessary to proceed with the application: one determined it a Type 2 Action under SEQR and a second which established a public hearing for Sept. 4.

Also in his report, Pierson advised the safety manual is complete and the Ellicottville Engineering website is underway. There will be heavy equipment training for all Department of Public Works employees.

Pierson also spoke more about the data hosting company Wendell Engineering for the town/village GIS/asset management system. It would cost $9,212 for the first year, which covers the initial GIS licensing and data hosting, and also included training for the GPS/GIS handheld transmitter. After the first

year, it would be $4,967 per year for data hosting and licensing. The board approved the bid.

The board also approved a raise — with the condition the village board also agrees on it — for Bob Scharf to $38 per hour following a request from Pierson. His compensation is covered under the Engineering Grant.

Pierson advised that the Box Culvert project on Golley Drive is complete.

He advised the county was instrumental in the project with man power and equipment.

The board asked Pierson how he has liked being here the past six months.

Pierson stated that he and his family are getting settled into the area and the job has been challenging but rewarding, and he is looking forward to the future in Ellicottville.

Scharf thanked the county for all of their help on the Golley Drive Box Culvert. Next there was a motion to purchase a JCB 110W Excavator; there was a second and ayes carried.

Scharf advised this one is much more agile than our current 2005 excavator. It is

smaller and quicker as well.

During the town supervisor’s report at the beginning of the meeting, the board approved the Intermunicipal Water Contracts and the Land Bank Agreement with Cattaraugus County.

Currently, the town has no homes in the program.

The board also accepted the resignation of Jack Kramer from the Town Zoning Board of Appeals.

The resignation comes after 40 years on the board.

The board thanked him for his service over the four decades and regretfully

accepted the resignation.

In other business at the meeting, the board learned: • the EVGV Trail Board is currently looking into two grants, a DOT Tap Grant and the Ralph C. Wilson Grant; • there are nine headstones in Jefferson Street Cemetery that will be repaired in early September.

The Bryant Hill Cemetery is being evaluated before September.

The next regular meeting of the Ellicottville Town Board will be held at 6 p.m.

The Ellicottville Village Board accepted a new bond resolution for the water system project and discussed adding pickleball lines to the tennis courts during a special meeting Wednesday morning.

Natalie Ann Hicks Natalie is survived by three daughters, Janice (Christopher) McCabe of North Tonawanda, Kristina (Lucas) Shufelt of Springville and Kaitlynn (Daniel) Scott of Henrietta. Also surviving is a brother, Larry Kent of Ellicottville; and one very loved grandson, Kurtis Benjamin Shufelt; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Natalie is also lucky to have many friends who were very dear to her heart.

Besides her parents, Natalie is predeceased by a brother, Michael Kent.

Friends called Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2018) at Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St., in Little Valley. Funeral services were held Wednesday (Aug. 22, 2018) from the funeral home. Burial was in Maples Cemetery.

ELLICOTTVILLE — Natalie Ann Hicks, 58, of Ellicottville, passed away Friday (Aug. 17, 2018) following a courageous battle with cancer. Natalie passed in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family.

She was born Nov. 30, 1959, in Springville, daughter of the late Clarence and Barbara (Simko) Kent. On Aug. 11, 1979, she married Paul Hicks, who survives.

Natalie was employed as a department manager at Walmart in Springville for many years.

Natalie always loved the company of others. She would enjoy a glass of wine, attending concerts with friends and weekend getaways. Even more so, she loved vacations on the beach.

$200K in State Aid Coming to County’s Youth Bureau State Sen. Catharine Young, R-Olean, announced $200,000 in state funds for youth development programs at the Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau.

“This is an investment in the future,” Young said. “In my view, there is nothing more important than investing in education and opportunities for the next generation, which is why my Senate colleagues and I will always fight to support the Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau and youth boards across New York State.”

Young said the funds will help the many programs offered by the bureau, including academic skills programs, career preparation classes, anti-violence initiatives, mentoring opportunities, substance abuse prevention, healthy eating and healthy living instruction, among many others.

“The Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau is a fantastic resource for young people, empowering them to build bright

futures,” she added. “The youth bureau gives children and young adults the education and skills they need to become leaders in our schools and communities, helping them achieve academically and personally.”

The stations were purchased with funds from the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) Improving Health in People Living with Disabilities Grant. The funding was awarded to 10 communities nationally, including two in New York state: Cattaraugus County’s Healthy Livable Communities Consortium and Syracuse.

Grantees targeted policy, system or environmental changes that foster healthy eating, physical activity or tobacco prevention and reduction with a principal focus on people with disabilities.

This is the first occasion that charging stations have been used in New York State Parks, according to officials.

“We are very pleased to receive these new

accessibility enhancements on behalf of Allegany State Park,” said Jay Bailey, regional director of the Allegany Region of New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “These devices will further promote accessibility here in the park and hopefully add to the overall positive experience that our patrons have during their visit.

“These new wheelchair charging stations will be placed at high use patron areas adjacent to accessible trails,” he added. “We are committed to making Allegany State Park welcoming to people of all abilities.”

Dave Elder said they have done this acoustic show exclusively at some private parties. Elder and Joe Rozler play acoustic guitar with a bit of accordion, while Mark Dixon, drummer and vocalist, plays a Cajon drum. Cappelli said the auction items donated by the local community will provide great bargains for the extensive silent auction and short, live auction. According to Cappelli, the Rotary Club of Ellicottville has two foundations — Youth and Family Support. He said all the funds they collect at the door and the auction go into their rotary foundation for both.

He said the annual gourmet dinner fundraiser benefits the community with a number of local programs including the Food Pantry, Women’s Shelter, medical emergencies, various ECS student programs, many library programs, kids Halloween Party and many more local causes.

“This fundraiser supports most of the local programs by the rotary and started 13 to 14 years ago as ‘Another

The couple officially took ownership of the East Aurora store, located at 669 Main St. next to the Aurora Theater building that also houses Fowler’s Chocolates, in early July. The past several weeks have been spent completely gutting the building, including tearing up the carpet and ripping out the ceiling.

“It’s been a work in progress,” Reading said from inside the store on Monday. A lot of the detail and finishing work still needs to be completed, but Reading said much of the major construction is finished.

The two Mud Sweat ‘n’ Gear locations will be similar in terms of branding, product selection and service, Reading noted, although they won’t be exact replicas of each other. The product mix will be different, she said.

However, like the Ellicottville location, the store in East Aurora will be a fullservice ski and snowboard shop with specialty gear and accessories. They also plan to offer seasonal and daily rentals, tuning services and boot fitting.

Azcarate and Reading will oversee the operations at both locations with the help of general manager Pat Wallace. Page Nowicki, who has been full-time in the Ellicottville location since 2013, will

manage the East Aurora store.

Azcarate said he expects the store will have 7 or 8 seasonal employees, with some of them previously employed with Aurora Action Sports.

Opening during Labor Day weekend will give the Mud Sweat ‘n’ Gears location in East Aurora great timing to enter the upcoming ski and snowboard season, Reading said.

“In Ellicottville, we really start gaining traction around Labor Day and then from there it just keeps building until the season starts,” she said.

The store plans to host special sales from Sept. 6 to 9 — including during Taste of East Aurora on Saturday, Sept. 8 — as a way to introduce themselves to the East Aurora community. No date has been set for a grand opening celebration, but one could come closer to the ski season.

Reading said the store’s fall hours will likely be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“I just see tons of potential and lots of opportunities for us,” Reading said. “We are excited. We want to hit the ground running and do the best we can.”
