On Monday, Aug. 21, a solar eclipse will occur— the first time in almost 40 years that any part of the continental U.S. has experienced a total solar eclipse. While this scientific event will be best seen in its totality along the path from Oregon to South Carolina, Western New Yorkers will still be able to witness a partial solar eclipse. According to www. buffaloeclipse.org, “A solar eclipse happens when the moon, as seen by us on Earth, passes directly in front of the sun. Once each month, the moon makes a complete orbit (or revolution) around the Earth. The changing angle of sunlight on the moon causes

the waxing and waning of the moon’s phases. “...Even though the sun is much larger than the moon, the two bodies are at just the right distances to make them appear to be the same size in our sky. This means that the bright yellow disk of the sun,

known as the photosphere, can be blocked revealing the sun’s atmosphere which is called the corona. When this happens, a beautiful ring of light appears, the stars are visible in the middle of the day, birds stop chirping because they think

The regular meeting of the Town Of Concord Board was held Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, at the town hall. Highway superintendent Dennis Dains was absent. The meeting opened with the floor being given to Erie County Legislator John Mills. Mills was making his regular visitations to board meetings. A major highlight was that he reported that Route 240 from Holland Glenwood to Foote Road would be finished ASAP. The county moved the equipment from the work on See Town Board page 6

Farm Stands

Buy local. Eat fresh! No problem. One of the many perks of living in the Springville area is the endless supply of fresh produce available. And while the very tastiest ear of corn, crispiest, crunchy cucumber or juice-dripping-down-your-

face tomato is the one grown in your very own garden, that little farm stand up the road on the corner is really just as good. (And a lot less frustrating when you realize the bunnies ate all your beans again, or maybe that’s just me.) While many areas in WNY

boast large farmer’s markets filled with local farmers and vendors, we are lucky to have the old standby, Gentner’s Commission Market (located at 341 West Main Street, Springville) right in our backyard every Wednesday. Everyone knows you can find a bit of magic hidden at the flea market portion of the auction and if you are in the market for farm animals and fresh eggs, look no further. One of the other bonuses of this one stop shopping experience is the multitude of fresh produce offered from farms located all over WNY. Oh and let’s be real, where else can you purchase a bag of peaches and a real live peacock? See Farm Stands page 3

The Waite Building today. When it opened in 1910, the first floor housed the Post office and Simon Bros. Clothing store, the second floor was used for manufacturing Anti-Dolor products and the third floor was a music hall. The Springville newspapers reported on July 4, 1910 that several orchestra members provided music all day long in the new Waite Hall. By Derek M. Otto

At the town board meeting last week, Legislator John Mills gave an update on the legislative agenda that the county was working on. Not

surprisingly, the county was working on ways to combat the opioid epidemic in Erie County. Mills mentioned that it was actually dentists that were the

Officer Mike Kaleta was absent. The meeting started off with Liz Melock asking the board to approve Adam Tillinghast as the part-time

caretaker, or light maintenance worker, to replace Lester Dunn. The board approved the hire with the job starting Aug. 15. Trustee Moriarty asked if the job was in budget.Melock replied that the job was in budget, but due to more maintenance work involved the job pay was increased and the hours reduced. The board was asked to approve the application for Springville-Griffith Institute’s annual homecoming parade. With the approval, Mayor Krebs noted that SGI will also file the event permits as well.
