We • We always like to celebrate the opening of new businesses in our community, so it’s no secret that having two of them recently announce their opening plans is great. Both Lifepath Yoga Center and Soul 2 Sole Dance Studio are featured on the front page of this week’s edition, and we commend both business owners for making plans to open their doors downtown. • Although it was sometimes difficult to hear over the traffic, the ceremony that dedicated Zoar Valley Road as Honorary American Legion Drive allowed for a great opportunity for important public officials to visit Springville. That includes Mark Poloncarz and John Mills, two of our elected officials, who got to see firsthand the busyness of South Cascade Drive. • It’s time for the Erie County Fair! We hope you have been enjoying Jolene’s look back at the fair — including the article on the front page this week — and have learned something new about one of our favorite summer events. And don’t forget to stop by all the attractions at the fair in Hamburg — you might even see Jolene helping out in the Historic Building! Have good news to share? Email us at info@ springvilletimes.com or stop by our office at 65 E. Main St. in Springville.

An armed suspect was shot by two Erie County Sheriff’s Office deputies during a confrontation Sunday evening at Country Fair at the corner of South Cascade Drive and Route 39, the sheriff’s office reported. Nicholas Krencik, 34, with addresses in Ashford and Collins, was identified as the suspect during a press conference held by the sheriff’s office on Monday afternoon. Authorities have been told by medical professionals he is expected to survive following surgery at Erie County Medical Center. Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard said on Monday that Krencik’s motivation is still unclear. “Our investigation into his mental background and his criminal background are continuing,” he said.

Unveiling American Legion Drive

This week, we continue to look at the history of the Erie County Fair. In 1867, the fair was once again held in Springville. The newly-formed Ladies Department, under the supervision of officers chosen by the women of the society themselves, displayed “everything which tends to make a home pleasant.” By now, there were several types of sewing machines being displayed, as well as a fine specimens of house and church organs. Prizes of $8, $5 and $3 were authorized for “the team that shall plow ¼ an acre the best and in the shortest time.” Heartening to the farmers across the land was the news of the founding of the Grange, a national fraternal association designed to protect farmers’ interests. On Jan. 9, 1868, there was a historic society meeting. The Hamburg Driving Park Association offered the “Society” the use of its new half-mile track and grounds, located between Abbott’s and White Corner, with office buildings and seats — free of charge if they would hold the next fair on the grounds. Some of the people who were present were
