The Beach Bucket List

A Sprague Brook Summer

By Alicia Dziak

There’s nothing quite like a day at the beach in the summer months. Whether you like to splash in the water or stay on shore building sandcastles or collecting sea glass, the beaches of WNY offer something for everyone this summer. Lake Erie Beaches Head to Lake Erie for endless views of the water and hours of fun in the sun. Woodlawn Beach State Park, at S-3580 Lakeshore Road in Blasdell, offers a beautiful, one-mile long natural sand beach with panoramic views. Woodlawn Beach supports a diversity of wildlife habitats including one of the finest freshwater sand dune areas remaining on Lake Erie. WNY Filled With National History, Patriotism

By Elizabeth Riggs

We all know why the fourth of July is such a special date in American history — it’s the day our country was founded by our forefathers. But what Western New Yorkers may not know is that we share a home with several other historic sites that also have an impressive significance in our nation’s history.

In East Aurora is the only remaining site of our 13th President of the United States, Millard Fillmore. On Shearer Avenue, you will find his small, clapboard house where he lived with his wife, Abigail, until 1930 when they moved to Buffalo. Fillmore was born in Cayuga County in 1800, and began studying law when he was 18.

He preferred a small practice to a larger firm, so he moved to East Aurora and was the town’s only lawyer. In East Aurora, Fillmore rose to prominence, eventually elected the State Legislature and climbed the ranks from there. While many would imagine a presidential home to be grand and extravagant, Fillmore’s home truly defines the term “humble beginnings.” Fillmore’s home, located at 24 Shearer Avenue in East Aurora, is open for tours from June through October on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1-4 p.m., or by private appointment. Visit the Millard Fillmore House website, www. millardfillmorehouse.org or See WNY History page 4

Catch an Outdoor Movie This Summer By Jennifer Weber

As with most events in Western New York in the summertime, there’s never a lack of options available for entertainment. For those who love movies, there’s nothing like a nostalgic, memory-making night under the stars at one of the area drive-in theaters. Head to the nearby Delevan Twin Drive In, at 11771 Route 16 in Delevan, and take in a movie double header. Prices are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for kids ages 4-12 and free for 3 and under. For more info, visit www.delevandrivein.net. The Transit Drive-In located at 6655 South Transit Road in Lockport shows movies on four different screens every night of the week See Outdoor Movies page 4

If you’re looking for a great and nearby way to enjoy all summer has to offer, check out Sprague Brook Park, located at 9674 Foote Road, right off Route 240, in Glenwood. This Erie County park was acquired by using state and federal aid programs to assume title to more than 2,200 acres of parkland (including Eighteen Mile Creek, Beeman’s Creek and Larkin Woods) in May

1963. In Feb 1964, Erie County bought 86 acres of land for expansion in the Towns of Sardinia and Concord for $1,500. So just what is there to do at this hidden gem? With numerous hiking and biking trails, there are plenty of locations to explore the great outdoors. Plant life includes American Beech, Hawthorn, See Sprague Brook page 3

A LOOK BACK: Dealing With the Wild

Nib Ellis with the last known wolf in the Town of Concord. By Derek M. Otto

With summer is well underway, the residents in the village of Springville and the Town of Concord are dealing

with a taste of the surrounding wildlife. Bear sightings and numerous fox and raccoons making their way into the village are making life a little more interesting for our residents. Years ago, the wildlife was part of daily life. Over time, farms developed and overhunting led to the decrease of bears and other creatures being seen in and around the village. Hunting still is a great sport in the area, especially for deer and turkeys, but little is heard of the old pastime of coon hunting. A friend recently told me of a story of his neighbor on Henrietta Road that would have coon hunts. Men would gather on Friday or Saturday

Concord Announces Comprehensive Planning

By Derek M. Otto

On Wednesday, June 28, The Town of Concord held a public information meeting on the Comprehensive Plan for the town. The comprehensive plan is the guiding document that helps the town government make decisions on the major issues affecting the town and allows it to guide future growth and development and is the basis for the zoning laws governing the town. This was the first of several public meetings of the planning committee and Wendel Consulting firm of Williamsville, NY. The planning committee is made up of town board members, residents, and consultants from Erie County. Ken Zittle, Ed Heary, Sr., Ed Heary, Jr., Bill Gugino and Clyde Drake represent the town; Maralea

Ortiz , Bruce Luno and Leanne Voight represent Erie County. Wendel presented and explained the purpose of the plan and responded to residents’ concerns over future proofing and creating a sustainability plan for the town. The master plan would help the town in developing zoning laws concerning green energy, access to technology and the preservation of historical significant areas of the town. At the meeting, school board members, business leaders and concerned citizens were well represented. Even though some issues brought to light by citizens were not necessarily town issues, they included: the senior center, access to parks and better facilities at Community Park, use of existing networks, access of emergency services

at Craneridge and outlaying areas of the town and public transportation. The consultants from Wendel gave residents time to write and address concerns on several maps of the town as well as voice concerns. Officially the meeting was called to start at 7 p.m., as per the legal announcement made by the Town Clerk Darlene Schweikert. Many residents that showed up at 7 p.m. found that the meeting was already in session and missed out on the clarifications and reasons for the plan. Another public meeting is planned for September. Project information will be posted on the town website http://www.townofocncordny. com and further comments can be sent to Concord@ wendelcompanies.com.

Letter from the Editor

When I was a kid, I loved the beach. There was nothing like being at the ocean, jumping over huge waves. As I got older, I preferred laying out on my beach towel trying to get my pale skin to turn into something resembling a tan. To this day, being by the water still puts me in an instant good mood. While we don’t live near the ocean, I really think that being by any body of swimmable water is the next best thing. We’re lucky to have so many awesome beaches to choose from, and I still make it a point to take myself and my kids to a few of them every summer. Just last weekend, we were able to spend a few hours on Quaker Lake at Allegany State Park exploring the water by kayak and then stopping at the beach to swim. We take annual Lake Erie beach trips with our Springville friends and spend even the smallest moments of free time at the creek at Sprague Brook. If you’re like me and think being by the water is synonymous with summer, check out the article on page 1 and also the community calendar for events and concerts coming up that will make you so happy to be living in WNY. Further on the subject of President Fillmore, he was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, a historic 269-acre cemetery with a variety of historic monuments, mausoleums and sculptures. Forest Lawn also has several famous permanent residents, including Fillmore, singer Rick James, Community Activist Stephanie-Lady Smothers and Inventor Lawrence Dale Bell. Each year, from June through October, Forest Lawn has a full schedule of guided tours in their infamous trolley, many by theme. During the winter months, the cemetery hosts their famous Sunday in the Cemetery Concert and Lecture Series in the historic Forest Lawn Chapel. For more information on Forest Lawn, visit their website: www. forest-lawn.com. Another registered historic monument in the state of New York is the Buffalo History Museum, which was built in 1901 as the New York State Building for the Pan American Exposition. This world fair is now primarily remembered, unfortunately, as the location of President William McKinley’s assassination. Though many of the exposition buildings were later torn down, Historical Society remained and today is home to more than 100,000 physical objects and over 200,000 photographs and 20,000 books which help shape our understanding of Western New York’s story. For history buffs, the Buffalo History Museum also has major collections on the Holland Land Company, U.S. President Millard Fillmore, Seneca Indians, Buffalo Bills, the Pan-American Exposition, the Larkin Company, and much more. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $2.50 for children 7-12. Veterans admission is

Further on the topic of President McKinley, the only known marker of his assassination is a boulder placed in a grassy median on Fordham Drive in Buffalo. Also related to the unfortunate assassination of President McKinley is the Theodore Roosevelt Inauguration Site, located at 614 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo. The site is the only National Park Service site in Western New York, and the place where Roosevelt took the oath of office on Sept.14, 1901 immediately after McKinley’s death. Originally built in 1839, it was the home of Ansley Wilcox and his wife Mary Grace Rumsey at the time of inauguration, but the building was originally constructed as the Buffalo Barracks in an effort to ensure border security due to tensions between the U.S. and Anglo-Canada at the time. The site is open year-round by guided tours only, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on weekdays and 12:30 p.m. on weekends, until 3:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, $4 for children 6-18 and free for children under 5. their website: www.trsite.org. Speaking of Roosevelts, Springville natives, did you know that native songwriter Jack Yellen penned “Happy Days Are Here Again,” best remembered as the campaign song for Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s successful 1932 presidential campaign? According to Time Magazine, it gained prominence after a spontaneous decision by Roosevelt’s advisers to play it at the 1932 Democratic National Convention, and went on to become the Democratic Party’s “unofficial theme song for years to come.” While there are surely many, many more ties to our nation’s history in Western New York, these are great starting points. So, get out there and add a little history, education and patriotism to your adventures this summer! Will Lowry is a guitarist/singer-songwriter who hails from Western New York. He began playing guitar during the folk music revival of the 60’s. For a time he moved onto electric guitar as rock music emerged, spending a few years developing his skills as a rock and blues guitarist. In 1971 he moved to the Boston area seeking a band of like-minded musicians. While living in Massachusetts he studied classical guitar in Cambridge. Will moved home to Western New York the following year at the invitation of an established band. Eventually his path brought him back to the acoustic guitar, playing solo acts as well as with other performers. Will recorded his first album in 1979 entitled MYSTERY. This album was followed up by Come Away, In Your Presence and Fragments. His most recent album, Colours & Lines was released in November of 2016.

July 17 – 21

Jess Chizuk – Compelling, vivid stories from the heart told emphatically by graceful vocals, accompanied by little more than an acoustic guitar. These are the building blocks for most of Jess Chizuk’s songs. The young singer-songwriter has her musical roots firmly divided between both old folk tunes and new indie music, and the result of this combination is her truly captivating writing. It has been garnering the attention of audiences in her hometown of Buffalo NY and beyond. Drawing on life experiences, honest stories, and the city she calls home, her music is soulful and truly genuine. This award winning songwriter already has an impressive catalog of accomplishments at only 22 years old. Aside from supporting national artists like Howie Day, Davina and the Vagabonds, and Dylan Jakobsen, Jess was the recipient of the Best Original Solo Act award at the 2015 Buffalo Music Awards, the winner of the 2014 Yellen Foundation Songwriting Contest, winner of the Folk category at the Smoky Mountain Songwriting Festival Songwriting Contest, a semi-finalist in the 2015 Songwriter’s Serenade Contest in Morovia TX, and a top five finalist in the singer/songwriter category of the Great American Song Contest – a contest receiving submissions from nearly 2000 songwriters worldwide.

July 24 – 28

Davis & Eng Band - Mark Davis and Steve Eng are two longtime friends and musicians from the Jamestown, NY area. In 2012, they teamed up to form the musical duo of Davis & Eng and bring you a variety of music from Duke Ellington to Tom Petty. Steve is an award winning finger style guitarist and is also a local guitar and banjo instructor. Mark is an extremely gifted musician having played electric keyboard and the banjo. July 31 – Aug. 4

Keith James is an accomplished pop singer-songwriter from Buffalo, NY. His soulful vocals and infectious stage presence have landed him success not only on the local stage, but the national as well. Since then he’s gone on to do special events for the Buffalo Sabres, Bills, and many others in great local and regional venues. So keep an eye (and ear) out for Keith’s solo, duo, and full band act, you won’t be disappointed.

Aug. 7 – 11

Ken Hardley is a musician, entertainer, and socialite from Upstate New York. A lifetime dedicated to restless explorations of a variety of musical and literary mediums makes Hardley a performer of broad musical taste and perspective. nights and, with their dogs, would head into the woods and chase raccoons. When the dogs treed the coon, the men shook the trees and the coon fell, where it was hit over the head. The coon was bagged up and taken for its pelt. They’d put the coon in a back room of the house and went to go fetch more coons. Well on the one occasion that my friend talked about, the coon came to. The room was a mess when the gentlemen came back. It’s something you would not do today due to the risk of rabies and treatment of animals is far different than just a generation or two ago. The conversation led to talking about Zoar Valley and its most famous resident, Norbert “Nib” Ellis. Ellis had lived down in Zoar Valley and was known as the “hermit of Zoar Valley.” Based on the stories I have heard over the years, he was more like a Grizzly Adams. He wasn’t much into newer technologies as they developed, but he was sociable and well liked by most who talk of him. He was even considered a ladies man! Not necessarily a hermit.

Ellis was fond of the hunt and his house was full of pelts and stuffed animals. His house was a place that was falling in around him except for his kitchen— his old wood fired cook stove was his source of heat. His chickens had free run of the place. For the midtwentieth century, this was a bit odd, sort of like Ma and Pa Kettle. Ellis was known for being generous. At one time, he had hired a cook for the winter months. It seems that Nib hired a street dweller from Buffalo and gave him the winter job. When the weather warmed, the cook would go back to the streets of Buffalo. An odd set up, but it worked for Nib. A local newspaper wrote about him in the 1960s, giving him the title of Hermit of Zoar Valley. However, it was Nib that would have his picture taken with the last known wolf in the Town of Concord in 1950. He was one of the last great frontiersman in Concord. Do you have a story about Nib? Please share it with us on our Facebook Page.

Descendants of 154th New York Volunteers to Hold Annual Reunion in Springville

Descendants of members of the 154th New York Volunteer Infantry, a Civil War regiment raised in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, will hold their annual reunion at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 15 at Fiddler’s Green Park at Franklin and North Buffalo Streets in Springville, weather permitting. Should it rain, the reunion will be held in nearby Goddard Memorial Hall at 86 Franklin Street. The 154th New York—known as the Hardtack Regiment—was raised in the summer of 1862 and participated in many of the great campaigns and battles of the war, including Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chaattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign and Gen. William T. Sherman’s marches through Georgia and the Carolinas. Mark H. Dunkelman of Providence, RI, the author of six books and dozens of articles on various aspects of the 154th’s history, will preside at the reunion, as he has every year since their inception in 1986. Dunkelman is the great grandson of John Langhans of Ellicottville, who served as a corporal in Company H of the 154th. Stories and relics of his ancestor inspired Dunkelman’s interest and led to a lifelong work as regimental historian. To date he has connected with more than 1,270 fellow descendants of members of the 154th. This year’s reunion will commemorate the regiment’s veterans in the postwar era. The program will explore how they remembered their service in the organizations they joined, the monuments they erected, the reunions they held, the trips they made to their old battlefields, the relics they preserved and the memoirs they wrote. Anyone descended from a member of the 154th New York is encouraged to attend the reunion,m which is free and also open to the public. Descendants are asked to bring photographs and relics of their soldier ancestors to be copied and added to the regimental archives. Each attendee will receive a souvenir ribbon. For more information, contact Mark Dunkelman at (401) 369-0637 or email nyvil54th@aol.com, or visit www. hardtackregiment.com.

Bertrand Chaffee Hospital has announced that a new, upgraded CT (computerized tomography) scanner has been installed in the Imaging Department. The CT scanner, commonly referred to as a “cat” scan, takes a series of x-ray images from different angles to produce cross-sectional images of bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside the human body. These studies show greater clarity and detail than a single x-ray image, and can typically produce images of the abdomen/pelvis, head/brain, sinuses, chest, neck, orbital cavities (eye) and spine. CT angiography can also scan the arteries and veins throughout the body. “This equipment has a faster

scanning time, lower radiation dose and higher image resolution,” said Imaging Department Manager Lisa Smith. “A particular benefit of this scanner is its advanced cardiac screenings, which will support our Heart Center patients.” BCH’s CT scanner is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and participates in the “Image Gently” program. This CT scanner complements the other imaging and radiology services at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, including digital mammography, bone density, nuclear medicine, x-ray, MRI and ultrasound. A Summer to Remember at ASP By Alicia Dziak

Summer means peak season at Allegany State Park (ASP) and peak season means a full schedule of activities to be had! Head to the largest of New York State’s parks and enjoy 65,000 sprawling acres of outdoor fun. While cabins must be rented for a minimum of seven nights this time of year, camp sites can be reserved for fewer, and there are many to choose from. To check out what’s available, visit www.reserveamerica.com. You can also head to the park for the day. ASP’s naturalist-led daily programs make learning fun. Enjoy nature walks and scavenger hunts, learn about plants and animals and discover cool places in the park. Ten new programs have been introduced this year, like Wetland Walks, Night Hikes and Team Challenge Games. For more info, visit www.facebook.com/alleganystatepark or pick up the schedule at either rental office inside the park.

Cazenovia Park. Competitors traverse a 4-mile adventure run while navigating over, under and through obstacles including a climbing wall, cargo net, monkey bars, hay bales, slip ’n slides, mud crawl and many more – until the finish line is crossed and the party with Finn begins! 1st wave starts at 9 a.m., and the 9:30 wave is the only chip timed and competitive wave. Visit www.finnmccool4mile. com for more info. Also on July 15 is the Insane Inflatable 5K at Knox Farm in East Aurora. In the Insane Inflatable 5K, a towering, albeit bouncy, staircase looks down on runners—and that’s just the first obstacle. After clambering up one side and sliding down the other, contestants face a series of difficult grownup bounce houses with intimidatingly cute names. In Tangled Up, for example, a bramble of tubes catches runners in a rubbery maze. Likewise, S.O.S. has a 2.5-story pile of slides that leaves one feeling dizzy and disoriented. The whole thing climaxes at the Finish Line, which features rubber wrecking balls, a human pinball machine of colorful bumpers, and a rope ladder. Afterward, everyone gets to head to the Insane Midway to enjoy carnival games, live DJ performances, and food and beverages. For info, visit insaneinflatable5k.com. On Sunday, July 16 at

10 a.m., the Run Jimmy Run Charity 5K will take place at Coca Cola Field, 275 Washington Street in Buffalo. The race benefits the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY in remembrance of Jimmy Griffin. Race and 1 mile walk registration includes Buffalo Bisons Ticket vs. Scranton/WB, 1:05 baseball game, Commemorative T-shirt (for the first 500 registrants), Jaguar Chip-Timed Bib provided by ITS Buffalo Time, post-race party with lunch, beer and beverages and swag bag. Visit www. runjimmyruncharity5k.com for more info. On Sunday, July 23, at 9:30 a.m. the EVL-9 and EVL-4 Trail Runs return to Ellicottville. Choose from 9.7 or 4.2 mile courses on the trails in and around Holiday Valley, with 100 percent of the course being off-road trails, including ski area access roads, single track trails and tight-twisty downhills throughout Holiday Valley and state lands. These races are part of the Eastern Grip Trail Running Series, and help support the Heart Animal Shelter. All entrants are invited to the Holiday Valley Pool after the awards ceremony for the EVL-Trail Run Pool Party. 1/2 price pool entry coupons will be given to those intersted at the race. For more info, visit www.heartrateup.com. On Friday, July 28 at 7 p.m., the Springville Stampede makes its way back to SGI

Visit sites.google.com/ springvillecsd.org/stampede/ home for more info. On Saturday, July 29, take part in the annual McGreevy Run to honor all of our HEROES is our way of honoring Lt. Michael McGreevy who was KIA on 6.28.05 as a part of Operation Redwings. Mike was a 1993 graduate of Portville Central School and he was one of the standouts in both morality and drive. A scholarship was set up in his memory to be given to select students who live their lives in the manner in which Mike did. The goal of the race is to give all proceeds to the scholarship fund which gives back to the students of PCS. For more info, visit runsignup.com/Race/NY/ Portville/ TheMcGreevy RunforallofourHEROES. Letter from the Editor My family and I spend a lot of time at Allegany State Park year-round. Most recently, we booked a four-night stay over the holiday weekend at the Red House loops, where we upgraded our site this season with string lights and a new camping sign. I’m always impressed at how much there is to do at the park, and time flies by way too fast when we’re there. (Of course, we wake up much later than we do at home, so we don’t exactly get an early start.) I love that there are so many options for exercise, so you get in a workout without it seeming like work. Right before our trip, we bought kayaks, and enjoyed time out on both Quaker and Red House Lakes. We took the dogs for a walk along the paved bike path, then left them in the camper while we biked the same path. We walked up to Bridal Falls, and explored France Brook and Bay State Roads, then caught the fireworks at Quaker Lake before we headed home. If you’re looking for an escape to the great outdoors this summer, I encourage you to take the short drive from Ellicottville to this gem of a park. Check out the article on page 1 to learn about some of the great happenings there this summer. - Alicia Dziak, Editor, Springville Times and Ellicottville Times

platform at 68 feet and the longest zip line measuring 350 feet. For rates and to make reservations, visit www. holidayvalley.com/summer/ sky-high- adventure-park/. Those ages five and up can enjoy the Climbing Forest, which is like a 3D version of a rock wall, and only one of three in the country. There are 10 trees outfitted with color-coded climbing holds and the difficulty ranges from very easy (yellow) to very challenging (purple). Each climber is fitted with a harness that is clipped into an Auto Belay system. Once a climber reaches the top of the tree at up to 45 feet, they just let go and the belay system slowly lowers them to the ground. There is also a kids’ area with two trees where the youngest climbers can climb about 6 feet up and climb back down. For rate info, visit www. holidayvalley.com/summer/ sky-high- adventure-park/ climbing- forest/. The Mountain Coaster takes riders up the hill in their own car and lets them control their own speed on the way back down. Cool off this summer at HV’s three-pool complex, open daily through Labor Day. Splash into a kiddie pool, a lap pool and an activity pool, featuring a diving board and slide, play a variety of poolside games, like giant Jenga or Cornhole, or grab a frozen drink from the Cabana Bar. The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce presents the newest edition of the Gazebo Series, sponsored by CCSE Federal Credit Union. • Aug. 3: Lady Rush & the Vinyls • Aug. 11: Shake on the Lake, presented by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. Performances start at 8 p.m. On Sunday, July 16, 10,000 Maniacs will perform the entire “In My Tribe” album, which Rolling Stone named one of the “100 greatest albums of the 1980s,” at Griffis Sculpture Park. Celebrating their 35th year as a band, 10,000 Maniacs continues to make albums and sell out shows throughout the country. Jim Donovan & Sun King Warriors will bring their danceable rock/world beat sounds to the stage. Jim Donovan was one of the founding members of Rusted Root. Erie, PA touring performer Tyler Smilo will open the concert at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance (www.eventbrite.com), $25 day of show. Children 12 and under free. Music starts at 2 p.m. The concert will feature music, activities, artists, food

There will be a shuttle service that will help attendees get to the concert area. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs. For even more live music, mark your calendar for July 28-30 when Jazz & Blues Weekend returns to Ellicottville. See the article on page 1 for more info.

Visit the Millard Fillmore House website, www. millardfillmorehouse.org or call 716-652-8875 for more information. During the

winter months, the cemetery hosts their famous Sunday in the Cemetery Concert and Lecture Series in the historic Forest Lawn Chapel. For more information on Forest Lawn, visit their website: www.forestlawn.com. Veterans admission is free. Visit their website for more information at www.buffalohistory.org.

Originally built in 1839, it was the home of Ansley Wilcox and his wife Mary Grace Rumsey at the time of inauguration, but the building was originally constructed as the Buffalo Barracks in an effort to ensure border security due to tensions between the U.S. and AngloCanada at the time. The site is open yearround by guided tours only, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on weekdays and 12:30 p.m. on weekends, until 3:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, $4 for children 6-18 and free for children under 5. For more information visit their website: www.trsite.org. Speaking of Roosevelts, Springville natives, did you know that native songwriter Jack Yellen penned “Happy Days Are Here Again,” best remembered as the campaign song for Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s successful 1932 presidential campaign? According to Time Magazine, it gained prominence after a spontaneous decision by Roosevelt’s advisers to play it at the 1932 Democratic National Convention, and went on to become the Democratic Party’s “unofficial theme song for years to come.”

While there are surely many, many more ties to our nation’s history in Western New York, these are great starting points. So, get out there and add a little history, education and patriotism to your adventures this summer! For more great ideas on historical daytrips and sites to see around the Western New York area, check out the Visit Buffalo Niagara website: www.visitbuffaloniagara.com.

ASP

Continued from front page

Through mid-July, Allegany State Park’s Environmental Education Department will offer hikes to view the rare Synchronous Fireflies – once thought to exist in only a handful of places in the world. The Photinus Carolinus species, also known as the Synchronous Firefly, flashes only from late June to midJuly. In 2012, the Firefly International Research and Education Team came to study the local firefly species, and confirmed its existence in the Branch Creek area of Allegheny National Forest. After lead naturalist, Adele Wellman, and other volunteers and naturalists from Allegany State Park received the training necessary to identify the species, the park naturalists looked in similar habitats and were able to identify the Synchronous Firefly for its first confirmed sighting in New York State. For information on other programs, please check Allegany State Park’s activity

schedule at www.facebook. com/alleganystatepark , or call (716) 354-9101 ext. 232. Sally’s Hootenanny has begun for the season! Join Sally Marsh for this ASP tradition—a weekly sing-along at the Quaker Amphitheater, Thursdays at 8 p.m. Weekly artists-inresidence will perform concerts throughout the week throughout the summer. Performers include Darrell Porter, Will Lowry, Jess Chizuk, Davis & Eng Band, Keith James, Ken Hardley, Sean Patrick McGraw and Katy Webster. Head to Red House Lake or Quaker Lake and rent a kayak, SUP, canoe or paddle boat and explore the water. Or sit in the sand and enjoy the beaches. Free Tai Chi classes will be offered Wednesday and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Quaker Bathhouse. Register by calling (716) 354-2182. Quaker Lake will also be the site for the annual Rock the Park celebration on July 21, with live music by Jess Chizuk

and Playing with Monsters and local vendors. The annual Beach Party will be held at Quaker Beach on Aug. 18, with music by Keith James and Sean Patrick McGraw and Kevin McCarthy, as well as face paitning, kids’ activities and fireworks. Enjoy free outdoor movies at the Quaker General Store several nights a week. Pick up the schedule at either rental office inside the park. Of course, if it’s less scheduling you’re after, take your pick from miles of scenic hiking trails on varying terrain throughout the park. Climb Thunder Rocks, explore Little Ireland, visit the Fire Tower, go fishing in Science, Red House or Quaker Lakes, or grab a bite on the patio of the Park Restaurant. ASP is a haven for outdoor summertime fun. And since it’s just a short drive away, why not plan a trip or two or 10 there this summer? You won’t regret it!

“The Silent Corner” by Dean Koontz

“I very much need to be dead.” These are the chilling words left behind by a man who had everything to live for—but took his own life. In the aftermath, his widow, Jane Hawk, does what all her grief, fear, and fury demand: find the truth, no matter what. People of talent and accomplishment, people admired and happy and sound of mind, have been committing suicide in surprising numbers. When Jane seeks to learn why, she becomes the most-wanted fugitive in America. Her powerful enemies are protecting a secret so important—so terrifying—that they will exterminate anyone in their way.

As August approaches, Great Valley native Priscilla Snider is closing in on a personal challenge—taking part in the Empire Ride, a seven-day cycling adventure across New York State to support cutting-edge cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The ride goes from New York City to Niagara Falls, from July 30 to Aug. 5. According to Snider, “This is more than just a bike ride. I am participating in a 500+ mile adventure across New York State to fight cancer.” Snider noted this is a huge personal challenge and while she did complete a 500-mile trip across Virginia, that was in 1976 when she was 20. “Everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by cancer, and this is my opportunity to change the state of cancer research for good,” Snider explained. In February 2012, Snider was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. She feels very fortunate that her body responded well to chemo,

Ellicottville police are actively enforcing town and village trash laws and have fined people for illegally dumping in private dumpsters. Under Environmental Conservation law, fines can be $1,500 or more for illegal dumping. Please read and follow rules below: Village of Ellicottville The Village of Ellicottville provides regular curb-side garbage and recycling pickup every Monday. Recyclable materials (clear glass containers, recyclable plastic, cardboard, paper and cans) must be separated from regular refuse. Trash may be put on the curb no sooner than 24 hours before pickup. If you miss the Monday pickup deadline, you must take your trash to a nearby Cattaraugus County Transfer Station. Persons seen dumping trash in private dumpsters or on someone else’s private property may be ticketed and fined $1,500 or more by police or authorized Village personnel. When holidays fall on a Monday, pickup will be the following day. Major garbage (e.g. furniture, appliances, etc.) pickup in the Village occurs on the last Monday of January, April, June, July, September

and November. Major garbage may be put out no more than 72 hours before pickup. Please confirm major pickup dates with the Village Clerk at (716) 699-4636. Lawn and gardening brush removal by the Village takes place ONLY on May 9, 2016 and June 13, 2016. Residents are responsible for arranging for brush disposal at all other times. Town of Ellicottville The Town of Ellicottville does NOT provide trash service to residents. Trash and recyclables may be taken to a Cattaraugus County transfer station.
