Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet throughout Western New York. The goal is to make Shakespeare approachable for audiences of all levels of Shakespearean knowledge. This is Shake on the Lake’s second visit to Springville. Last year, the company performed Twelfth Night for a full house at Springville Center for the Arts. Due to the rain, the production was held inside. This year, the company hopes for an outdoor show, weather permitting! The mission of the festival is to entertain, engage, and enrich those in the community by creating professional theater productions in a natural outdoor setting to inspire audiences to envision new creative

Stock Up During National Blueberry Month By Alicia Dziak

It’s the height of berry season in Western New York, which means time to stock up on all that fruity goodness. Besides the obvious tastiness of blueberries, these tiny, juicy morsels have the highest antioxidants of any fruit, and just one cup provides a good amount of fiber and vitamin C without packing in a lot of calories. While July is officially National Blueberry Month, there’s still plenty of time left in the season, and many berries are available to be picked locally through late August. Enjoy fresh berries now and get enough to can and freeze so you can enjoy the taste and health benefits all year round! See Berries page 4

Higher Education

By Derek M. Otto

A recent visit to the Lucy Bensley Center in Springville had me thinking about a unique bust that is on one of the book cases there. It’s not of anyone internationally renowned, like the other one they have of Ben Franklin. This bust is of David Cochran, the son of Samuel

Cochran. Why is there a bust of Mr. Cochran? After he left Springville, he pursued an educational career first at Fredonia Normal School and then at Albany Normal School. It was there he ended up in administration and became the school’s president. A few years later, he took the position of President of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, which today is known as NYU. It is always nice to have a Springville connection in something prominent as the president of NYU. At one point, Springville was going to be the premier spot for higher education, internationally. With college starting in a few weeks for many, it is interesting that

Fiddler’s Green Country & Bluegrass Festival July 29

The Concord Historical Society, a non-profit organization in Springville, is sponsoring the Fiddler’s Green Country & Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, July 29 in downtown Springville. Activities are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. From 1818 until about 1834, Springville was actually known as “Fiddler’s Green” due to many fiddlers playing almost nightly in the village green. For this year’s Festival, there will be eight bands playing six hours of continuous music from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at both the Gazebo in Fiddler’s Green Park and also on the porch of

the 1890’s Historical Society General Store known as the Concord Mercantile. Open Jamming will also be held in the new Gazebo in Heritage Park on Franklin and Factory

Streets. Again featured this year will be horse drawn shuttle rides between the Gazebo music area and the Mercantile music See Bluegrass Festival page 6
