It’s Ellicottville’s 2018 Jazz and Blues Weekend!

Whether you like your music with a southern flavor or Chicago-style, there’s something for everyone as all of EVL’s hot spots offer a full lineup of entertainment Friday through Sunday.

The Gin Mill, at 20 Washington St., will feature the Blue Lite Blues Band on Friday, and Oreo Rodeo’s funk and groove style on Saturday.

Balloons, at 20 Monroe St., will host electric blues guitarist Hayden Fogle Friday evening, followed by funky, jazzy, rockin’ guitarist extraordinaire BD Lenz on Saturday.

At Finnerty’s Tap Room, at 5 E. Washington St., you can catch Aron Cole on Friday at 7 p.m., Rockabilly Steve and BR3 on Saturday at 4 p.m. and The Rig at 9 p.m. Sunday.

July 2020 is Goal to Merge Town & Village Water

The July meeting of the Town Board opened with a Public Hearing regarding Local Law No. 3 - 2018. This is a Local Law override the tax levy limit for fiscal year 2019. There were no members of the public in attendance to comment. The PH was left open for anyone who may stop by during the meeting. Next, there was a motion to approve the minutes of June 2018 meeting; there was a second and ayes carried.

There was a motion to pay the Town bills on distribution report #07-2018; a second and ayes carried.

Supervisor’s Report: Regarding the Intermunicipal Water Contracts, there have been slight revisions by the Town/ Village Engineer, Niles Pierson. This consists of combining the purchase and maintenance agreements into one contract. The Town will purchase 7.5 million gallons from the Village for

Opening day of the 176th annual Cattaraugus County Fair is less than a week away.

The “big guns” this year are Tuesday and Wednesday night when Kane Brown on Tuesday and The Charlie Daniels Band on Wednesday are set to country rock the fairgrounds.

Brown sold out the track seats and bleachers in a record 15 minutes, according to Kristina Charlesworth Golden, and the 2,500-seat grandstand sold out in less than a week.

There are still track, bleachers and grandstand seats for Wednesday night’s Charlie Daniels Band show, Golden said.

Daniels has visited the fairgrounds as

recently as 2002 and 2007, she added.

Fairgrounds admission is required to attend the concerts.

“A lot of younger kids have gotten into country rock and country crossover music,” Golden said.

Continued from front page $25,000.00. Pierson advised that if we were to instantly merge, the rates could confuse people and he wants to ensure a smooth transition. The goal is for a complete merger by July 2020.

Town Supervisor Matthew McAndrew advised that he attended a Data Management Webinar.

This would manage the data for the new GIS System for the Town/Village. This GIS System will track all of the assets for the stormwater management system, sewer, water and more. This will be useful in budgeting a future maintenance of our systems.

Currently, Allegany County uses this program, along with a handful of other municipalities in New York State. Pierson will reach out to them for their opinion.

Pierson advised that he plans to start with Sewer and Water assets, but can eventually enter Highway Department information with vehicles, equipment and buildings which will aid in better data driven decisions. There was an update on the status of the Downtown Revitalization

Initiative; McAndrew advised that we should know by the end of the month. The Consolidated Funding Application Grant is being put together now and Town/Village Planner Gary Palumbo is working on a budget for the project.

This is a 75/25 grant which means that 75 percent of the projects would be paid for by the grant and the remaining 25 percent would be paid for by the Town and Village. This is a joint grant the Town and Village is working on together to get. It is due on July 27. Last in this report, there was a motion to accept; a second and ayes carried.

There was a motion to accept the Clerk’s, Justices’, Building Inspector’s, Planners and Police Reports; there was a second and ayes carried.

Police Report: Officer Don Auge advised that everything is going great and the new hire continues to impress him and is doing a good job. The Explorer vehicle has been repaired and is back on the road. The Tahoe vehicle went in for recall work and should be

back on the road quickly.

Next, Officer Auge advised he had been contacted regarding a sale on solar powered speed monitors.

These are the signs that alert drivers as to their speed.

The TB has looked into these before and asked if is possible to get portable ones. They noted this could aid in slowing down traffic on the Jefferson corridor of Route 219 to which members of the community complained last week that drivers were making too much noise. This is due to the condition of the road and the numerous pot holes.

Officer Auge is going to investigate further.

Engineering Report: Pierson is working on a Safety and Health Manual for the Department. There are renovations going on in the Public Works Building.

This includes new floors, paint, ceiling tiles, lockers, a smart TV, conference table and new electrical circuits for the future servers that will provide the file sharing for the town and village.

The bid for the work came in at $28,500.00 from JC Construction, a Minority and

Woman-Owned Business Enterprise, which helps the Town/Village meet certain parameters of how the Engineering Grant monies must be spent. There was a motion to accept the bid; a second and ayes carried.

Next, Pierson spoke more about the data hosting company for the GIS system. It would cost $9,200.00 for the first year, which covers the initial GIS licensing and data hosting.

Also included training for the GPS/GIS handheld transmitter. After the first year, it would be $4,000.00 per year for data hosting and licensing. McAndrew asked if we would own the data should we ever choose to use another company, Pierson advised we would own the data. Last, the Department of Health flagged the water system for automatic chlorine shut off valves. This is the second time it has come up. Also the pressure reducing valves need to be replaced and Pierson should have a quote soon.

and they need to get the drainage plan for Holiday Valley Road done. The department installed two driveway culverts and will be patching Irish Hill and Jackman at the end of this month. Also, Scharf has heard that the State may potentially redo Route 219 out to Holiday Valley Road.

New Business: There was a motion to appoint John Burrell as Marriage Officer for a four year term; there was a second and ayes carried. There was a motion to accept the resolution to divide the Engineering Grant money with the Village; there was a second and ayes carried. There was a motion to add Pierson to the Retirement Resolution; a second and ayes carried.

Old Business: Regarding the Ellicottville-Great Valley Trail, the committee is now looking into village routes.

These would go along the Arboretum, creek on Elizabeth and the Village/ Town Park. Kody Sprague would like to have part of the trail on his property and is willing to donate toward the project.

There was a motion to close the meeting; a second and ayes carried. The next meeting of the Town Board will be Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Town/Village Hall.

CTE Cosmetology Students Volunteer at Hunter’s Hope Symposium

Students from the Cosmetology Program at the Ellicottville Career and Technical Center (CTE) volunteered at the 2018 Hunter’s Hope Family & Medical Symposium held July 18-22 at Holiday Valley Resort.

Accompanied by instructor Tracy Guntrum, three cosmetology students who will be seniors this fall were onsite at Creekside Lodge from 9 a.m. to noon July 20, where they offered mini-salon services for the visiting children.

The services included painting nails, braiding hair and hands-on activities where the kids could actually play with the hair

on the mannequins — comb the hair, brush it and learn how to braid. The kids also tried doing nail art on artificial nails.

Guntrum said the Hunter’s Hope families come from all over the world and there are a lot of sick children there, but a lot of siblings and other family members come as well. The cosmetology activity is just one of many things they can do to have fun and feel good.

“Last year when the cosmetology students did this, we found that the kids preferred to do the services themselves instead of having them done for them,” she said.

According to Guntrum, the main goal for the

cosmetology class is to educate them into an entry-level position as a cosmetologist. In order to get the 1,000 hours required for licensing by New York state, the students have to do extra-curricular projects before they can take their state board exams.

“With the two-year program, even if they came every single day to school and never had one sick day, they still cannot get the 1,000-hours in,” she explained. “They have to do an additional internship volunteering and working in a salon and/or a summer school program.”

This volunteer activity at the Hunter’s Hope event is part of the summer school program, Guntrum said,

and volunteer work is good practice for her students.

She said working with the public and any kind of work with kids is good for the education and social skills of her girls.

Anna Grantham, director of Leukodystrophy Care Network (LCN) programs, said 55 families from Canada and across the United States came to the symposium Holiday Valley, which has hosted it several times before.

“After we got here on Monday (July 16), we started with our medical providers on the first part of the week,” she said.

“Then, we had a couple of days where it’s the medical providers and families together. For the rest of the

week, it’s the families just having fun.”

Grantham said they are celebrating 20 years of Hunter’s Hope and they are trying to make a difference.

Kid Camp is held everyday while the parents are in sessions learning from the doctors and other families about LCN. “The neat thing about Kid Camp is a lot of the kids are siblings of affected children, so this time is just as special for them as it is for their parents,” she explained.

“They get to make lifelong friendships with other kids who understand their life. It’s a healing time for them.”

Rotary Club of Ellicottville Launches New Website

The Rotary Club of Ellicottville announces that they have their new website operational at ellicottvillerotary.com The Rotary’s Greg Cappelli said that the club has wanted a website for some time and worked with Heather Sullivan over the winter to create one that was launched a month ago.

The site has everything Rotary, with a landing page explaining what the Rotary does along with where they meet and how to contact the club. An events page provides a list and details on all upcoming events. You can even order tickets online for their great end of summer party, Tuscan Moon.

There is a photos page that contains great pictures from many Rotary events so maybe you can find your picture there. If you have a picture from one of our events, please forward it to us for posting.

There is a special page dedicated to Bob McCarthy, Rotary’s great friend, with many photos of Bob and friends from his many zany events along with his dedication plaque from the library bench.

There are links to Rotary International and Amazon Smile and a contact page if you would like to ask a question or make a comment or send us a photo.

Last but not least is a donation page, where you can choose to donate to Rotary’s two Foundations – Foundation for Youth or Family Support for Ellicottville. Hansen’s Spectacular Sensations Abby Minnekine of Little Valley New Acrobatic Act to the Fair is New County Dairy Princess

Audiences of all ages will be left breathless after watching Hansen’s Spectacular Acrobatic Sensations, a new grounds act at this year’s Cattaraugus County Fair.

The Hansen family will present a fully selfcontained acrobatic thrill show all weeklong.

The acrobatic act features the Hansen family with Shane Hansen, his wife Alecia Michelle, and their three daughters, Olivia (14), Madison (12) and Ella (8). The family tours the United States, performing at fairs and festivals.

Their act includes highspeed juggling, extreme

hula hoops, an aerial ring, Olympic trampoline and a cube spinning display.

Alecia performs on the aerial cloud swing that is over 30 feet in the air.

Hansen said she swings out and dives out, connected only by her feet. He laughed as he admitted that he is afraid of heights and his wife teases him about it.

Hansen likes his feet more firmly planted on the ground. He does a highspeed juggling act that spectators will marvel at as he performs with a modernstyle cube spinning display, a lighted five-foot cube that creates an optical illusion.

Olivia is a trampoline star, along with her father and youngest sister, Ella.

Like her mother, Madison is also an aerialist — probably one of the youngest in the country, according to Hansen. She’s also a hula hoop star.

When the Hansen family is not on the road performing, they call Sarasota, Fla., home.

Hansen said they are on the road about eight months out of the year, so their children are homeschooled.

Both Shane and Alecia were born into performing families, so it was natural for them to become performers themselves.

“We’ve known each other since we were kids, and we lived four miles apart from each other in the same city,” he said.

“My parents did this line of work and Alecia’s parents did the same thing. That’s how we met.”

Abby Minnekine has been in training for the job of Cattaraugus County Dairy Princess for the past three years.

Next week, Abby will be promoting dairy products at the Cattaraugus County Fair as the 2018 Dairy Princess.

She previously served for two years as an ambassador to the Dairy Princess’ court, and last year was selected the Dairy Princess alternate.

Abby, 16, is the daughter of Matthew and Christine Minnekine of Little Valley.

Her grandparents, William and Barbara Campbell, had a dairy farm in Little Valley for 40 years. She’ll be a junior this fall at Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School.

“After showing Holsteins for six years in our 4-H Club, I would like to take

this opportunity to support our local dairy farmers and promote the dairy industry,” Abby said.

Abby has two siblings, a brother, William and a sister Alexandra. Her sister is spending her second year as an ambassador on the Dairy Princess’ court.

While Abby doesn’t live on a farm, she’s shown holstein cows and rabbits with 4-H at the county fair for the past six years. She’s an 8-year 4-H member.

Her aunt and uncle, Ken and Laurie Dechow of

Randolph, have sponsored her by letting her lease a holstein calf she keeps at their dairy farm and cares for daily.

She’s not showing a calf this year, however. Abby will busy herself promoting dairy products and the industry at this year’s county fair.

Abby plays volleyball, basketball and softball for Cattaraugus-Little Valley.

Her club memberships include National Helpers, ECOS and the National Climate Summit. She works at Holiday Valley daycare in the winter months.

Her college plans are to study the sciences and research.

Abby plans to be a spokesperson and goodwill ambassador for the local dairy industry not only at the Cattaraugus County Fair, but in other county events over the next year.

Monday’s demolition derby starts at 7:30 p.m., and is free. The Championship Demolition Derby kicks off at 5 p.m. on Sunday and will be followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

A new midway company is featured this year, Powers & Thomas Amusements, said Golden, who checked them out at the midway at the Chautauqua County Fair last week. “They’ve got a ride called Speed that some people will want to try,” Golden said. A photo is on the county fair’s Facebook page, she added. It is not for the faint of heart.

The rides open at 4 p.m. on Monday, the fair’s first day, and at 1 p.m. each day after that.

There is free parking behind the grandstand.

New to the fair this year is a covered Small Livestock Show Ring, Golden said.

Saturday’s popular Market Class Animal Sale features 300 entries from 130 4-H members. It starts at 1 p.m. in the dairy and livestock arenas.

There’s also a variety of free grounds entertainment again this year, each with three to four shows a day, Golden said. They include: Bears of Bearadise, Hansen’s Spectacular Aerialists, Commerford’s Petting Zoo, Indian River Lumberjack Show, Lee Germain and Judi Magic Show, Pratt Family Chainsaw Carving, and Horses, Horses, Horses.

Several bands will play on the covered stage in the pavilion next to the Corporate Building, Golden said. They include: Bill Labuhn with Cruisin, Craig Wilkins, Paul Zittel and Pure Country and 3-D Line Dancing.

Social Media Propelled Kane Brown to Stardom Fair official on speed of sellout: ‘Definitely the biggest concert we’ve ever had’

When one hears about someone trying to make it big in the country music scene, it’s not uncommon to imagine a talented musician singing at a honky tonk in Nashville or perhaps being an opening act at a county fair or small-town concert.

But when country music meets the 21st century and the world of social media, stars like Kane Brown are born.

In a career that seemed to explode overnight courtesy of a series of original Facebook videos, Kane will bring his young country music act to the Cattaraugus County Fair for a sold out show on Tuesday, July 31.

The viral nature of Brown, who is only 24 years old, seemed to stretch into the show’s ticket sales.

Track seats sold out within about 10 or 15 minutes even with 400 extra seats, according to Kristina Charlesworth Golden, treasurer for the Cattaraugus County Agricultural Society that operates the fair. The bleachers were sold out by noon and the grandstand

lasted about a week, she said.

“By the time we booked Kane Brown, he was on his way up to the top,” she said.

“Once we announced it, he had his huge hit, ‘Heaven.’

We couldn’t have had better timing with him. Kane is going to be huge. Definitely the biggest concert we’ve ever had.”

Brown was raised in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., a city of roughly 9,000 in the very northwest corner of Georgia. In an interview with meetkanebrown. com, a site managed by Sony Music Entertainment, Brown said he was forced to frequently switch schools and shift households because of trouble at home.

“We didn’t have a lot of money, and we moved all the time. There were a bunch of family issues,” he told the website.

A musician by nature, it seemed, Brown performed “Gettin’ You Home” by Chris Young to win a high school talent show. That led to him eventually singing cover songs on his cell phone and posting them on Facebook.

“I would just sing and put them on Facebook, not thinking that anything was going to happen,” he said.

“One day, I just woke up and got lucky. I had 60,000 shares on a song.”

But in hindsight, that was nothing — his rendition of “Check Yes or No” by George Strait tallied more than 7 million views.

His first six-song EP, “Closer,” was released in mid-2015 after raising funds on Kickstarter. A new single, “Used to Love You Sober,” was released in October 2015 and was spotlighted on Beats 1, a worldwide Apple Music radio station.

Brown signed with Sony Music Nashville in 2016 and released his self-titled album in December 2016. It included the hit “What Ifs,” which was recorded with his former classmate Lauren Alaina. When an expanded version of the album was released in October 2017, it included another successful track, “Heaven,” a duet with Chris Young.

“My fans got me to where I am today,” he told the website. “When I take the time to comment back in 10 seconds, they always get excited, and it makes me feel happy, too. It just makes me feel like I’m giving them something for

Charlie Daniels Band to Perform Aug. 1 at Fair

At a county fair that often features young, up-andcoming talent, the arrival of Charlie Daniels and his band on Wednesday, Aug. 1 to the Cattaraugus County Fair will celebrate the long and storied career of one of country music’s pioneers.

After all, Daniels, now 81, had already released 18 studio albums by the time Kane Brown, who is scheduled to perform at the fair the day prior, was even born in 1993. “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which was Daniels’ 1979 chart-topping hit, had been out for 14 years.

“I love what I do and value my career and put a lot into it,” Daniels said in an interview with The Salamanca Press in 2010 before a show at the Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino. “Longevity was always one of my primary goals and I have worked toward that goal all my professional years.”

It’s a goal that Daniels can say he has accomplished — the musician began writing and performing in the late 1950s to start a career that now spans six decades.

“Charlie Daniels has been here before and always has been a big hit,” said Kristina Charlesworth Golden, treasurer for the Cattaraugus County Agricultural Society. “He draws all ages. We have a lot of tickets sold to teenagers who are just discovering the country rock music and tickets sold to those who have been fans for years.”

He’s part of a country music genre that has changed since the era of Johnny Cash and Merle

Haggard. Today’s country stars, as evidenced by artists like Brown, for example, may sound different but Daniels said it’s a change he believes is necessary.

“I think any kind of popular music has to be in a constant state of flux to survive,” he explained.

“That involves some good, some bad and some inconsequential.”

Daniels himself has never been limited solely to the country music genre.

In 1964, he co-wrote “It Hurts Me,” a song recorded

by Elvis Presley. Daniels also played electric bass on three albums for Bob Dylan in 1969 and 1970.

In 1979, eight years after Daniels released his first record, his band recorded arguably their most popular tune – “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” The hit tells the story of a boy named Johnny dueling the Devil in a fiddle match.

When asked why the song became so popular and still remains so today, Daniels said it’s “the novelty of the fiddle and the fact that the good guy always wins.”

Five decades after he began writing his music, Daniels experienced what he calls one of the great moments of his career – being inducted in the Grand Ole Opry. Daniels’ induction was given to him on stage in the form of a Christmas present by fellow country singer Martina McBride.

Completely speechless after receiving the award for some time, Daniels told the audience “I’ve never dreamed that this could ever happen.” “(It was an) absolutely wonderful long held dream come true,” he remarked about the induction during the 2010 interview.

Tickets for the Charlie Daniels Band are $35 for track seating and $30 for reserved grandstand and general admission bleachers. Gate admission must be purchased for $8 presale through July 29 or $12 at the gate.

The Cattaraugus County Fair is just around the corner and Ellicottville 4-H members are working ‘round the clock in preparation.

The 4-H organization, facilitated in Ellicottville by the Cornell Cooperative Extension, is an international organization dedicated to “empowering young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime.” In rural areas like this, 4-H focuses on the particular skills and leadership qualities needed to, for example, run a farm or hunt humanely.

Many Ellicottville students are proud 4-H’ers, as the 4-H organization gives them an opportunity to excel outside of school grounds.

Every year, 4-H’ers have the opportunity to show their animals, produce and art at the Cattaraugus County Fair in the hopes of winning prizes.

Meganne Chapman, a senior at Ellicottville Central School, has been showing at the county fair since she was five.

Starting in Open Class and transitioning to 4-H when she was seven, Chapman proudly shows registered Jersey dairy cows. Recently, she has started entering photos for 4-H and Open Class, for which she has won several prizes.

The showing process for cattle is a rigorous one and at the fair, calves,

heifers and cows are divided into age groups within their breeds.

“The judge,” Meganne says, “is looking for the most correct dairy animal that represents her breed.”

Through 4-H, there is also a Showmanship Class where the judge looks for the best presentation of the handler, not necessarily the animal.

“My favorite part of showing my hard work at the fair is not entirely winning,” says Meganne.

“It’s more for me the

fact that other people can view what I like to do as a hobby. Also, there are people that I only see once a year and the fair brings us back together.”

She goes on to say that, “The most difficult part is the preparation. It doesn’t happen overnight.

Brooke Eddy, a junior at ECS, has been showing at the Cattaraugus County Fair for four years. Also a 4-H’er, Brooke takes great pride in the animals she prepares for showing.

Unlike Meganne, Brooke shows pigs and goats and, in previous years, has shown chickens and lambs.

For her, the best part of the whole process is getting to see all her friends and everybody else’s hard work.

“The most difficult part, I have to say, is the preparation,” says Brooke.

“Getting the animals ready and making sure they’re the right weight is the most important part of the show.”

Mandy Hurlburt, an incoming freshman at ECS, has been a dedicated 4-H’er for six years. This year, Mandy plans to show a hog and a goat, though she has shown a variety of animals, including sheep, dairy steers, chickens and turkeys at previous fairs.

“I love showing at the Catt. County Fair,” Mandy says, “and I love that 4-H helps me to do it. Being a 4-H member has helped me become a better person. I have learned to give back to the community. My 4-H club, ‘The Valley Workers,’ has given back by having car washes where all the proceeds go to St. Jude’s.”

She says that her favorite part is watching others and learning how to get better.

“I also love meeting new people and making friends,” she notes.

Be sure to visit the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds July 30 through Aug. 5 to witness for yourself the hard work and dedication of these young women and 4-H’ers across the area. Don’t forget to stop in at the 4-H Youth Building to marvel at Meganne’s photos, as well as vegetables, fruits, carpentry, confections, clothes and posters all crafted by 4-H’ers. A lucky few may even see their projects go to the State Fair for judging. Despite this, the Cattaraugus County Fair isn’t merely another opportunity for competition — it’s a family-friendly event in which mistakes are made, learning is everywhere, and solidarity is key.

Powers & Thomas Returning to Midway

Visitors to the midway at this year’s Cattaraugus County Fair will see a new offering of rides and attractions owned by a family already familiar with the annual fair.

Powers & Thomas, a company owned and operated by siblings Eddy Powers and Tracy Thomas — along with their spouses Amy Powers and R.D. Thomas, respectively — will begin setting up rides on Sunday after being in Ridgway, Pa. for five days.

The company is a family offshoot of a company operated by the siblings’ father. That organization, which had some of the same employees, visited the fair annually for years, according to Charlie Belknap, marketing, media and public relations official for Powers & Thomas.

“Pretty much everyone has been there and we look forward to going back.” said Belknap. “But we have a lot of upgrades to the show, a lot of amenities that other carnivals don’t have. That’s what gives us that amusement park feel.”

Among the attractions is Speed, a 100-foot high thrill ride dubbed on the company’s website as featuring “a gut-wrenching G-force” ride that is “not for the faint of heart.”

“It’s going to be the tallest ride ever at the Cattaraugus County Fair,” Belknap claimed.

He touted that safety is the top priority of Powers & Thomas, noting the company was recently awarded North Carolina’s Safety Amusement Star Award. The company also takes pride in being clean and friendly.

“Everything is color coordinated and we pride ourselves on safety,” he said. “All of our employees are not permitted to smoke on the midway when anyone is working. Everyone has photo IDs and they are all in uniform. We think of ourselves more as a traveling amusement park than a carnival.”

The midway rides are divided into three groups: kiddie rides, which children ride on themselves; family rides that are designed for members of all ages; and thrill rides for those seeking even more excitement. Many of the rides at the fair are featured on Powers & Thomas’ website.

But what Powers & Thomas brings to the fair doesn’t stop at the rides, Belknap said.

“We have benches and picnic tables for people to sit,” he said. “We want the people to come and have a place for parents and grandparents who are there with their children and grandchildren. Again, our whole thing we are trying to create is that amusement park atmosphere at the fair.”

The company earlier this week left the Chautauqua County Fair in Dunkirk before heading to Ridgway for the Ridgway Fireman’s Carnival that spans July 30 to Aug. 5. Then they’ll head to Little Valley to set up Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

The midway opens at at 4 p.m. Monday and is open every day thereafter at 1 p.m.

Midway rides at the Cattaraugus County Fair are included with general admission. Ticket prices are $8 presale through July 29 and $12 at the gate.

guy who is now executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, but it’s true. I was driving through a nasty fall snow storm and made this scenic town my safe haven for the night, and never left. Talk to other homeowners and everyone has a story, from “I came for the Summer Music Festival” to “we were looking for a different place to ski than where we normally go.” Whatever your answer, the result is the same as mine: you fell in love with the town and its people and now you’re part of this community.

Ellicottville has come a long way from the sleepy town that it was 20 years ago, but that’s not by accident.

A big part of the Chamber’s effort is an aggressive marketing campaign to build both awareness and demand for the community. Every year, we share the Ellicottville story with the media in the U.S. and Canada and as a result, we’ve been featured as a great getaway destination by some of the biggest, most respectable media sources out there, including the New York Times, New Yorker magazine, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the Toronto Star, USA Today, National Geographic Traveller and the Globe

you build your brand with public relations and you maintain it with advertising. Magazine, newspaper writers and travel bloggers are third parties telling folks why you should visit Ellicottville and are seen as endorsing a destination resulting in more visits than traditional paid advertising.

I’m proud to say we are consistently profiled by top notch media sources in our own backyard as well.

Of course, we live in times where we also get our news from online sources, which is why we’ve put a lot of effort into not only putting ‘feet on the street’ as alluded to in part 2 of this series, but also, eyeballs on the screen. The Chamber of Commerce website now boasts over 250,000 unique visitors and on average, over 600,000-page views annually. We have 28,000 Facebook fans and our e-newsletter has over 8,800 subscribers. Our digital ads are often served up to over 250,000 mobile and desktop devices. We continually monitor our digital presence and make changes as the situations arise.

And if all of this wasn’t enough, we continue to work on ‘making

billboards and various other online strategies.

Whether PR, advertising or social media, the common thread is this: showcase memorable experiences, events and people as a way to rise above the noise and media clutter to get people’s attention and make a connection. All of which makes for a compelling combination few communities can compete against and few visitors can ignore. And guess what, it’s going to keep getting better.

This fall, we’re literally building on our success, with the opening of a five-acre sports facility, with three fields and over 700 parking spots that can accommodate everything from lacrosse and soccer tournaments to concerts. Holiday Valley has allowed us the exclusive use of the property and the Chamber has raised the funds to make it ready for use this September for our second annual Lacrosse tournament.

In a way, we’ve come full circle, from a ski town, to a place known for its festivals and now, as a great place to showcase both sports and entertainment events. All of which adds up to a healthier, more vibrant community.

Stock Up During National Blueberry Month

It’s the height of berry season in Western New York, which means time to stock up on all that fruity goodness. Besides the obvious tastiness of blueberries, the tiny, juicy “superfood” have the highest antioxidants of any fruit, and just one cup provides a good amount of fiber and vitamin C without packing in a lot of calories.

While July is officially National Blueberry Month, there’s still plenty of time left in the season, and many berries are available to be picked locally through late August. Enjoy fresh berries now and get enough to can and freeze so you can enjoy the taste and health benefits all year round.

Burdick Blueberries, located at 8267 Thompson Rd. in Cattaraugus, is a pickyour-own blueberries location on 40 acres of eight highbush varieties with grass rows. This local favorite opened for the season last week, and offers not only u-pick berries, but flowers as well. They are open seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For

Wally Holland Says He Has Much to Be Grateful For

So much to be grateful for: old familiar things, and best of all, something brand new.

At my age, new experiences are a rare and special joy. So this is a special week for me, in a couple of ways.

Last weekend, I officiated at nine soccer games in five days. I've been an official for more than 25 years, but I'd never done that before. I'm in no hurry to do it again, if I'm being honest.

Luckily I've been preparing at the gym in Springville, five times a week. And I've cut down on the wine again.

Your knees complain a bit, but you can't let the kids down. I'm grateful that I still have the chance to help out. They lift me up — that's a familiar feeling as well. But it's deeper than it's ever been, now.

England lost in the World Cup semifinals, which is all too familiar. But they did win one match on penalty kicks, which took all of England by surprise.

And I've finished my book: “Dear God, What's on the Second Floor?” It's taken a long time, I know.

My son Wally wrote it with me. He tries to reassure me: “Dad, great works of genius need time to gestate.” What he means is that we're sorry the darn thing took so long, and we're grateful for the chance to share it with our friends.

Wally tells me it will be available this weekend at whatsonthesecondfloor.com, for what they call a “low, low price.” And I imagine I'll have copies as well.

Right now all I feel is gratitude — to the people in Ellicottville, Springville and elsewhere — who've helped me along the way, and to my sons for their help with the book. And I'm grateful for the good fortune that's given me so many stories to tell, and a chance to tell them.
