July is Festival and Outdoor Fun Time in EVL By Alicia Dziak

Make July your new favorite month to be in Ellicottville. It all starts on Fourth of July weekend with the annual Summer Music Festival, July 1-3, when you can enjoy three nights of live music by headliners Rusted Root, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and 38 Special on the slopes of Holiday Valley. You’ll also want to spend some time in the Village where you’ll be treated to a pet parade, a strawberry festival, great dining and shopping. Be sure to bring a blanket to the Village Gazebo on July 1 and 2 from 1-4 p.m. for the kick-off of the free Ellicottville Gazebo Music Series. Then come back every week for free concerts every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. from July 7 –Aug. 4. Visit www.ellicottvilleny.com. How about cowboys, clowns and lots and lots of delicious food? Head to the Ellicottville Championship Rodeo, June 30 through July 3. Nine exciting rodeo events, a stick horse race for the kids and a rodeo midway round out the experience. Fireworks follow all the evening shows. Visit ellicottvillerodeo.com. The 14th annual Ellicottville Library Pro Am Golf Tournament will tee off at 11 a.m. at Holiday Valley Resort’s Double Black Diamond golf course on Tuesday, July 5. Gin Mill Mercantile Opens Next Week

By Alicia Dziak

Love the Gin Mill? How about funky gifts, fun décor and fresh baked cookies? Well, you’re in luck! The all-new Gin Mill Mercantile is opening this Saturday and will be filled with all things awesome.

The long-standing Gin Mill restaurant gives off a cool, laid back vibe to anyone who stops in to grab a burger or check out the live music, and surely, the vibe will make its way next door to the Mercantile. “We’ve always wanted to

expand on the t-shirts that we sell at the Gin Mill, but had no space,” owner Maribeth Rick explained, noting that the lack of storage and resources made it difficult for patrons to purchase t-shirts and other merchandise in an efficient way. The Mercantile is located right next to the Gin Mill, at 22 Washington Street. Previously home to Ellicottville Real Estate, the Ricks took over the space this spring, renovating it with new flooring, shelving running along the back wall and by the front window, and an antique counter that came

ECS Superintendent’s Contract Extended Board Preps for September By Jann Wiswall

It may be the last week of school before summer break, but the ECS Board is solidly focused on the 2016-17 school year. Among the motions made at the Tuesday, June 21 board meeting was a proposal from board chair Carl Calarco to extend the contract of

Superintendent Mark J. Ward through June 30, 2017. The motion carried. Ward reported that the first $200,000 of the more than $343,000 in NYS Smart Bond awarded to the district has been received. The funds will be used to purchase 43 ClearTouch Interactive Boards for all of the school’s instructional classrooms and several other locations. Ward

said the boards “should be ready to go in September.” The balance of the Smart Bond funds will be used for essential security upgrades, including new cameras, a server and software. Ward also said that teachers will be trained over the summer on the new Schoology student management system. See ECS Board page 4
