Red House Lake to Reopen for Swimming and Summer Recreation

Good news for those heading to Red House to celebrate the end of the school year. The lake will soon reopen to swimmers, kayakers and everyone looking to spend their summer near the water.

According to Allegany State Park park manager Tom Livak, “All critical concrete work on the Red House dam spillway area has been completed to date so the lake level can be returned to normal elevation once final certifications are completed and adequate rainfall is received. As such, we are tentatively planning to open Red House Lake beach on June 23 or a date soon after when lake levels have returned to an acceptable level.”

The actual date of opening will be dependent upon the weather and the amount of precipitation received to fill the basin. Please look for updates on the park’s Facebook page for confirmation on the exact date.

Quaker Lake Beach will be open daily for peak season beginning on June 23. The Quaker boathouse, located lakeside along the beach, will also offer kayaks, canoes and various watercrafts for rent.

This work is also very weather dependent due to soil moisture tolerances of the material used for widening the earthen dam. Livak noted that, “This work will likely be completed in the next several weeks” but emphasized that the remaining earthen dam and roadway portion of the construction work will not affect recreation on the lake.

Playgrounds Kids and kids at heart

can enjoy two awesome new playgrounds at the park this year. The first is located on the Quaker side of the park, near the Quaker picnic shelter/ area and across the street from the Amphitheater.

The second one is located along Red House beach.

This project is part of a goal Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed to modernize 100 state park playgrounds as part of the NY Parks 2020 Initiative. Under the initiative, the state park system will replace outdated playgrounds at the parks with codecompliant equipment, improve accessibility for people with disabilities and create distinct areas for young and older age groups.

Indian, Reed and Circle Cabin Trails On the Quaker side of the park, past the picnic shelter are the Circle, Indian and Reed trails.

Don’t worry—the orange construction fencing doesn’t mean these cabins will be torn down. In fact, it’s the opposite. These historic cabins, many of which started their life as tent platforms decades ago, have evolved into the cabins that patrons still enjoy today. In order to keep these historic structures in service for years to come, cabins are receiving new structural supports along with new piers, replacing any siding necessary, new roofs, doorway improvements and porch and step repairs or replacement as needed.

A total of 11 cabins will be rehabilitated on these three cabin trails. This project is expected to be completed in July.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS ECS Once Again Ranks High Among WNY Districts

The ECS Board of Education President Connie Hellwig called the school board meeting to order Tuesday evening, June 19 at 7 p.m.

After making brief changes to the meeting’s agenda, Hellwig opened up the meeting to public comment. Rachel Alexander, parent of an eighth grade student, expressed concern about the implementation of one of the school’s disciplinary actions, the out-of-school suspension policy. Alexander questioned the timeliness and fairness of such a policy at the end of an academic calendar year, and asked the board to give more thought and discussion before implementing the policy. She called for “checks and balances” to be put into place so that the decision for such a disciplinary action is not made solely by Robert Miller, Superintendent of Schools.

ECS Students and Faculty Look Forward to Summer Break!

It’s summer vacation, which means two-plus months of time to do whatever you’d like. I asked some ECS students and teachers what they are looking forward to most this summer, and it seems like traveling tops the list!

“I’m taking this summer to relax in the Outer Banks before I’m off to Minnesota for college.

I’m looking forward to spending my days at the beach catching up with my family.”

“I always love to have my summer vacations be educational and this summer is no different. My family and I are vacationing to historic Williamsburg, Virginia. We are going to visit old plantations and museums.

We might even swing by Monticello!”

“I’m going to Orlando for an Irish Dance competition on the Fourth of July weekend. I’m hoping to hornpipe, treble jig, and set dance my way to a ribbon…and meet some great friends along the way.”

Hellwig thanked Alexander for bringing her concerns before the board.

Hellwig presented board member Roger Spell with a plaque honoring him for his retirement from the BOE. The members of the board thanked Spell for his service and congratulated him on his retirement. Spell has served on the board since 2007, and Tuesday’s meeting was his final meeting serving on the BOE. ESSA Miller discussed new information related to the U.S. Department of Education’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

While some standards will stay the same, such as the requirement that the school have a 95 percent testing rate, others have changed.

ECS will now be given points for those students in the district who complete a G.E.D. program.

However, ESSA has determined that schools will receive higher ranks for completed AP courses than dual-enrollment courses.

Miller objected to this difference and said that according to ESSA, dual-enrollment courses cannot be tracked like AP courses, which is why they are ranked higher.

Miller argued that this data can and should be tracked, and that dual-enrollment courses should be recognized the same as AP courses.

Superintendent’s Report In his Superintendent’s Report, Miller shared a recent report from the National Honor Society that recognized ECS students’ success over the past three decades. Since 1979 when the NHS first awarded its prestigious scholarship, ECS students have been consistently awarded.

An ECS student received the scholarship the very first year it was introduced; since 1979, 17 ECS students have received this award to date, making ECS the leading school in Cattaraugus County. Miller said that this year, Kourtney Robinson received it, and she is the first ECS student in five years to receive the award.

Miller reported that ECS ranked consistently high in the Buffalo Business First school rankings, which is based on last school year’s data. The elementary school ranked 22 out of 255 schools, placing it in the 92nd percentile. Miller was pleased to share that the elementary school ranked 8 out of 255 schools in math.

The middle school rose in rank from 37 to 29 out of 191 schools, placing ECS in the 85th percentile. Miller noted that the high school rank did drop from 37 to 45 out of 134 schools, but that the high school was solidly in the 67th percentile overall, and in the 74th percentile in social studies. Overall, the district ranked 26 out of 96 districts in Western New York, and ECS remains the highest ranked school in the county.

Additionally, Miller noted that the district ranked 6th in Western New York for teachers’ experience. Miller said, “People come here to teach and they stay.

It really speaks volumes about our faculty and the community that educators want to come here and teach.” Overall, Miller was very pleased with the district’s rankings. He added that high school science teacher Blair Wood was recently approved to teach SUPA Physics (Syracuse University Project Advance), a program that allows students to

receive college credit for these courses.

MS/HS Principal’s Report Middle/High School Principal Erich Ploetz shared his recent visit to the Shriner’s Hospital in Erie, Pa. with members of the student council. This year, the student council raised over $600 for the hospital, and Ploetz, along with a small group of students, toured the hospital together.

“One of the hidden joys of being student council advisor was this visit,” said Ploetz, commenting on the end of his first year as advisor.

Ploetz said that the last exam of the school year was the Chemistry Regents Exam set for Wednesday, June 20. He added that he and other faculty members were finalizing details for graduation on June 22 and that he was looking forward to his first graduation as ECS middle/high school principal. “I would like to publicly thank all of the students and teachers for their hard work preparing for and administering final exams this year. I know a lot of work goes into this time of year for everyone, and I really appreciate the effort everyone has put forth,” said Ploetz.

Ploetz explained that nearly all of the major events have been scheduled for the 2018/2019 academic year. The live calendar is now available to view on the school’s website, but Ploetz noted that there may be some changes to the schedule. He added that next year’s prom and senior trip had yet to be scheduled, but will be added to the calendar when dates are finalized.

New Business The board approved a request from the Town of Great Valley for ECS to provide transportation for the town’s summer youth program. This program runs from July 9 through Aug. 16. The board also approved the creation of a part-time Special Education Teaching position in the tenure area of Special Education, effective Sept. 1.

Miller was pleased to share a Legislation Resolution from Senator Young congratulating the Ellicottville Girls’ Alpine Ski Team upon the occasion of winning the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Alpine Ski Team Championship for the 2017-2018 school year.

Senator Young Presents Resolutions to Ellicottville Alpine Ski Team

New York State Senator Catharine Young presented resolutions to the Ellicottville girls’ alpine ski team for winning the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Alpine Team Championship.

Freshman twin sisters, Hayly and Logan Fredrickson, both finished in the top 10 in the slalom and giant slalom during competition at Bristol Mountain Ski Resort in Canandaigua in February.

Ellicottville eighth-grader CeCe Carls sealed the team’s score, taking 39th in the slalom and 40th in the giant slalom. “Congratulations to Hayly, Logan and CeCe,� Young, R-Olean, said. “This is the second state championship Hayly and Logan have helped win for Ellicottville. They are top competitors and they prove that Ellicottville is home to some of the best skiers in the state.�

Young said because the Fredrickson twins are just starting their high-school careers and CeCe will be a freshman next year, they will have many more opportunities to bring state titles back to Ellicottville. “The Ellicottville girls’ alpine ski team has many great years of skiing ahead of them,� she said. “Their coaches, families and community should all be very proud of them.�

Leon Historical Society Preparing for Busy Summer

The Leon Historical Society has several opportunities for learning and programs in the works for this summer.

Throughout 2018, the “Pioneer’s Journal� is available for children aged 8 to 12 or older who like to learn history.

The program is available to area libraries, schools and any other interested group, free of charge.

On Saturday, the resort’s annual Mudslide returned to the slopes of Holiday Valley, bringing a thousand competitors of all ages, abilities and costumes to the race and fundraiser. “Preparations went well this year,� said Kristen Sciara, Marketing Manager at Holiday Valley. “The Mountain Crew has been working for about a month or so getting everything set up and ready, and now we have a beautiful day.�

Racers begin at the top at Spruce Lake and choose from two distances — a 3.5 mile or a 5.4 mile course — each boasting numerous obstacles. Both courses end at the giant mudslide down the bottom of the Yodeler slope, and competitors slip and slide their way down the mountain into a giant mud puddle. “We made some fun adjustments to the obstacles to keep things fresh,� Sciara said. “We like to use the natural terrain that’s already here and then use natural materials to build on that.�

One of those new obstacles was located on the top of Tannenbaum and features a series of two giant rollers. Another new obstacle was a balance beam in the ‘big ditch’ area between Tannenbaum and Morning Star, and the third was a wall rope climb on Foxfire for the long course. “The Mountain Crew is great at using some of the winter equipment we have an incorporating that into the race,� Sciara added.

Back for his third run, Jim Hurd and his family are among those returning to the Mudslide this year.

Hurd made the trip down to Ellicottville from Buffalo, but some of his family came from Virginia for a summer vacation. “It’s an annual thing,�

he said. “We go down to Allegheny, spend a couple days up here and usually go motorcycling riding.�

Grier Frazer from Warren, Pa., participated in the Mudslide for the first time this year. Running with a friend, Frazer said she’s trying to get out and do more activities. “We’re hoping to have fun, obviously, but I’m hoping to push myself while doing something different,� she said. “The great thing about this race is it gives people a chance to get outside, have fun, play in the mud and get together with friends,� Sciara said. “And it’s a mud run that’s fun.

It’s not too extreme, it’s family friendly and, here at Holiday Valley, it’s such a beautiful place.�

A portion of the event’s proceeds benefit Jim Kelly’s Hunter’s Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to giving hope through education and awareness, research and family care for Krabbe, Leukodystrophies and Newborn Screening. “We always want people to come out and participate because it’s so fun,� Sciara explained, “but because a portion of the proceeds go to Hunter’s Hope, that’s an extra bonus.�

The Kids’ MiniMudslide is a half-mile long course including several obstacles and the mudslide for kids aged 3 to 12, with start and finish lines at the Training Center. “We made some additions to the kids’ race,� Sciara explained. “It gives kids the chance to experience the mud and obstacle run at a younger age, and it’s fun for the parents, too.�

With two little ones of her own, Jamie Faulk, from Bemus Point, ran the Mudslide for the first time this year after being an observer when her family participated the past few years. “We bring our nieces and nephews and kind of the whole tribe out,� she said.

“We thought we’d give it a try because everyone always seems to have so much fun.�

Also participating for the first time is Ethan Brooks, running with Claire Benham, who’s participating in her third Mudslide. “I don’t really like running, but this makes me want to get out and go running,� said Benham, who, along with Brooks, came from Cuba. “I love all the obstacles that they have. It’s just a fun thing to do with friends.�

But the day doesn’t end with the end of the race.

An afterparty was planned for Saturday night, Sciara explained, and participants can take part in the other things Holiday Valley has to offer. “It always makes for a fun weekend, and it’s always Father’s Day weekend, so we have plenty of dads who bring their family together,� she added.

Next year’s Holiday Valley Mudslide is scheduled for June 15, 2019.

Marsh Set to Take on Her 47th Season of ASP’s Hootenanny

Allegany State Park’s favorite songstress is back for her 47th season at the park’s Quaker Amphitheater, as Sally Marsh will kickoff her ever popular Hootenanny at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28.

For 10 weeks every summer, Marsh entertains campers and other friends at Allegany State Park, where she has led a giant singalong for nearly five decades at the amphitheater every Thursday night, rain or shine, through Labor Day. Anyone attending Sally’s Hootenanny will find guests singing, dancing and having a great time. Marsh is going strong and hopes to still be performing when her 50-year mark of the hootenanny comes along in just three short years.

“The big thing for me happens when the park turns 100, in 2021, and I will have been there doing the hootenanny for 50 years. That’s my goal,” she said.

According to Marsh, there’s really out of the ordinary scheduled for this year at the hootenanny — except she’ll be celebrating her 64th birthday next month. She said her summer theme song is going to be “When I'm 64” by the Beatles.

“It’s kind of like going to a Kenny Rogers concert,” she said. “If you go there and he doesn’t sing his hits and songs that you like, everybody’s yelling, ‘Lucille’ and ‘the Gambler.’ That’s kind of like the hootenanny. I can add a new dance or something else, but the crowd really wants the old, familiar songs.”

Marsh energizes the crowd with her own infectious enthusiasm for music and draws the people into the songs of her hootenanny. She said she loves seeing the kids having fun and not being embarrassed to come up front to sing and dance and enjoy themselves. And, it spans all ages.

“To see the faces of these kids and their families … there is so much joy there. I’m can’t even tell you how lucky I am to have that joy,” she

said.

Honoring veterans is very important to Marsh so every week, she recognizes them for their service to their country. She starts the hootenanny with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the national anthem. Then, in the middle of the program, she leads a song to honor the veterans, which is a big part of the event.

“We also have one night where the Allegany State Park Historical Society honors a veteran and his family by sponsoring a weeklong stay at a cabin in the park,” she said.

Marsh is particularly proud of the people who generously donate items to be raffled off during the summer to benefit others in need.

“People are so generous and kind. We had a blanket raffle last year with over 32 blankets raffled off. We were able to help 28 kids have a nice Christmas,” she said. “We also participated in six veteran-type fundraisers to help out, and probably 10 benefits to help a family save their house that was in jeopardy. Already this year, people are ready to help others again in any way they can.”

The most recent fundraiser is a Sally’s Hootenanny patch that Marsh helped design.

She said some are on hats, but people can also buy just the patches.

Other fundraising items are glow-in-the-dark bracelets that say, “Sally’s Hootenanny: Always one more song.”

Three picture quilts donated by Marsh’s friend will also be available for raffles this year. Marsh said one is all Allegany State Park pictures and the other two are hootenanny pictures.

“They donated these quilts and donated funds, so I could have the patches made. They do this because they all know we are helping people in need,” she said. ““We have a wonderful night every week and we help people while we are there. What more could you ask for?”

Over the years, several organizations have recognized Marsh for her dedication and longevity at the park’s hootenanny, as well as her contributions to the community. On Aug. 15, 2013, the hootenanny group successfully broke the Guinness Book of World Records when they were the biggest group to sing “Old MacDonald.”

The record was 332 verses and they broke it with 356 singing participants on. In August 2014, she organized Smokey Bear’s 70th birthday party that was celebrated at the amphitheater as a fundraiser.

Marsh was inducted into the 14th annual Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame in April 2016. That same year, she was featured in the “Of Distinction” special section published by The Salamanca Press.

In July 2016, she surprised by the ASPHS that honored her with a plaque and Senator Cathy Young (R, Olean) with a Senatorial Resolution for her 45 years of hosting the park’s hootenannies.

“Those are the types of days you never forget.

They are what you call the perfect days, and they are days that you are so lucky to have,” she said. “With the Guinness attempt, we didn’t know for six months if we would make it into the book or not, and it really didn’t matter,” she said. “It was the fact that we did it all together and enjoyed it so much while we were doing it.”

What started as a singa-long around a campfire with a few people has grown over the years to be bigger and better. Marsh said she always looks forward to hosting the hootenannies and seeing all the people because they’re like family. She said the people are what keeps her coming back year after year.

Health & Fitness: Daily Core Use

Over the years, I have written articles promoting the importance of a strong core for athleticism.

However, have you ever considered how important your core is for daily activities?

Think of your core muscles as the sturdy central link in a chain connecting your upper and lower body. Whether you’re hitting a tennis ball or mopping the floor, the necessary motions either originate in your core, or move through it.

No matter where motion starts, it ripples upward and downward to adjoining links of the chain. Thus, weak or inflexible core muscles can impair how well your arms and legs function. And that saps power from many of the moves you make. Properly building up your core cranks up the power. A strong core also enhances balance and stability.

Thus, it can help prevent falls and injuries during sports or other activities.

In fact, a strong, flexible core underpins almost everything you do: Everyday acts. Bending to put on shoes or scoop up a package, turning to look behind you, sitting in a chair, or simply standing still — these are just a few of the many mundane actions that rely on your core and that you might not notice until they become difficult or painful.

Even basic activities like vacuuming, mopping, bathing or dressing, for example — call on your core.

On-the-job tasks. Our widespread dependence on artificial support, such as chair backs that shoulder us from sitting up straight have left many of us with weak spines and soft middles. Jobs that involve lifting, twisting, and standing all rely on core muscles. But less obvious tasks — like sitting at your desk for hours — engage your core as well. Phone calls, typing, computer use, and similar work can make back muscles surprisingly stiff and sore, particularly if you’re not strong enough to practice good posture and aren’t taking sufficient breaks.

Balance and stability.

Your core stabilizes your body, allowing you to move in any direction,

even on the bumpiest terrain, or stand in one spot without losing your balance. Viewed this way, core exercises can lessen your risk of falling.

Good posture. Weak core muscles contribute to slouching. Good posture trims your silhouette and projects confidence. More importantly, it lessens wear and tear on the spine and allows you to breathe deeply. Good posture helps you gain full benefits from the effort you put into exercising, too.

Weak, tight, or unbalanced core muscles can undermine you in any of these realms. And while it’s important to build a strong core, it’s unwise to aim all your efforts at developing rippling abs.

Overtraining abdominal muscles while snubbing muscles of the back and hip can set you up for injuries and cut athletic prowess.

An overall training routine should be what you focus on to develop a strong core. Planks variations are one of my favorite core strengtheners but need to be done with proper alignment and control. Exercises for better core strength can be endless and can meet any individual’s specific needs. Talk to an expert to find a routine that is right for you.

The Ellicottville Fire Department Explorer Program teaches teens ages 13 to 16 about becoming a volunteer fireman.

Rotary Club of Ellicottville Foundation for Youth Helps Fund EFD’s ‘Explorer Program’ For the third year in a row, The Rotary Club of Ellicottville Foundation for Youth donated $2,000 to the Ellicottville Fire Company last week.

This donation will help fund new members this year for the EFD Explorer Program.

This program, in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America, provides an opportunity for any teen (ages 13 to 16) to become a volunteer fireman in training. This program is to help get younger people trained and involved in volunteer fire fighting. Zach Golley, Kyle Germain and Daniel Tapikin are three young men from the Explorers who have joined the regular ranks of the volunteer firefighters over the past years.

“This type of program

fits perfectly with the Rotary Foundation for Youth’s mission and we are happy to help,” said Kathy Trost, secretary of the Rotary Club of Ellicottville.

“Our intention is to try to support two new members every year.

We believe that this helps the Volunteer Fire Company maintain and grow the EFD who provide a tremendous service to our community.

Jill Dunn added that, “we are able to provide this funding because of the generous support for our fundraisers like Tuscan Moon.”

The high cost of equipment for volunteers has been a limiting factor for growth of the program, said Debbie Golley from EFD. She said this generous donation will help grow the program

There are currently seven members of the Explorer program.

Explorer members get to participate in meetings and work nights, as well as fire and ambulance calls. During work nights, they learn about various fire trucks and equipment, like airpacks and practice running the hose. While attending an actual fire, there are restrictions to what they can do to ensure safety, while allowing them to learn. At the scene, they report to the assistant chief or captain for their assignments.

There are currently five members and three advisors in the program.

Fifty-two Cattaraugus County seniors were honored Monday night at the 17th annual Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau Youth Citizenship Awards Banquet at the Holiday Valley Lodge.

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, the guest speaker, congratulated them.

“Investing in our young people pays off in many ways,” he said. “You give us great hope for the future.”

County Youth Bureau Director Anthony Evans agreed.

“The reason you are here is your community service — giving it back and paying it forward,” he told the recipients. “Spending on youth programs should not be seen as a cost, but an investment.”

The recipients and their parents or other family members sat at tables, many with county legislators or other county officials. Each senior rose to introduce themselves and their parents and tell the group where they planned to attend college after high school graduation.

DiNapoli congratulated Youth Bureau officials for 17 years of recognizing youth citizenship, and each of the recipients as well, for their community service.

“A community-minded citizenry,” DiNapoli said.

“We need it more than ever.

With your volunteer effort you each have made your community stronger in your way.”

In the 18 years since their birth, DiNapoli said, the seniors have lived through 9-11, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and many other technological innovations from laptop computers to smartphones.

“Imagine what the next 18 years will bring,” he said.

He also encouraged them to be flexible with their plans for the future. He cited his own experience of being elected to the Mineola Board of Education on Long Island

at age 18 while still a senior in high school. That was in 1972. He spent 10 years on the school board.

“If you think you know what you will be doing in 10 years, you’re probably wrong.”

DiNapoli said the students would experience “a series of unexpected turns,” but to always do what’s right, speak up and to fight for their ideals — “especially when you feel like you are walking alone.”

The comptroller also

advised the students to listen.

He said the breakdown in social discourse is an obstacle.

“We can’t survive it without open and constructive dialogue,” he said.

His last advice to the students was to be generous, help others and stay connected.

“Be that ripple of hope and enjoy the curve balls life will throw you in the years to come. This is just the beginning,” he said.

WV Budget Fails Again in Re-Vote

The West Valley School Board of Education was forced to adopt a contingency budget for the 2018-19 school year after district residents on Tuesday again defeated the budget proposition during a re-vote.

The failed budget proposition comes at an interesting time for West Valley, as it was in the initial stages of a potentially full annexation study with a neighboring school district, depending on results of a pre-annexation study completed by education consultants Castallo & Silky.

The pre-annexation study was scheduled to be presented during a special board meeting on Thursday after press time for this edition.

The budget failed, 219167, and a bus proposition that was defeated in May also failed again, 210172. The 2018-19 school year will mark the second time in three years West Valley will operate under a contingency budget after the budget proposition also failed to pass in 2016.

“I don’t know,” said Superintendent Eric Lawton about why he believes the budget was voted down a second time. “We really explained, I thought, fairly

well to the people who were at the (public hearing) that if we are on a contingent budget we cannot do a full (annexation) study.”

Lawton on Tuesday said the district had three options examined in the study: annex the West Valley Central School District with neighboring Springville-Griffith Institute or Ellicottville or remain on its own. If the study concluded that annexing is a favorable option, the next logical step is to proceed with a full annexation study with that school district, he said, a cost split between both districts.

Lawton said he has talked to multiple attorneys or those knowledgeable with such a scenario and was advised an annexation study is not a contingent expense allowed under such a budget.

“If you ask any administrator they’ll tell you this does not count as a contingent expense,” he said. “I don’t know of any organization willing to take on the study if they don’t know if they’ll get paid.”

During the public hearing on the budget earlier this month, school officials — including Lawton, school business official Ann O’Brien and school board president Stephen Kowalski — all agreed they felt conducting an annexation

Beginning June 26 and continuing every Tuesday from 8 to 11 a.m. through Aug. 2, Allegany State Park officials will host a Citizen Bird Banding session between the Red House Beach parking lot and the covered bridge.

The public is invited to watch the park’s environmental education crew catch, band and release song birds on site as part of the Allegany State Park Summer Bird

Monitoring Project.

Participants can join park staff for a bird band demonstration which includes: capturing birds in mist nets, extracting birds from nets, banding (placing an aluminum anklet with a unique ID number) and recording scientific data (height, weight, tail length, etc.). Attendees will also learn how citizen science helps the park and why bird banding is important for protecting birds and their

habitats. They will even be able to see several different species up close.

The session starts at 8 a.m. with setting up the mist nets and getting the banding station set up to measure, record data and band the birds captured.

Attendees may even get to release the bird back into the wild.

Guests are invited to bring their lawn chairs. The banding will be canceled in rainy weather.
