Memorial Day in the Enchanted Mountains
By Elizabeth Riggs
While Memorial Day weekend may feel like the unofficial start to the summer, take a few moments to reflect on the true reason for this holiday: remembrance. Fly that American flag, immerse yourself in patriotism, take a few moments to reflect on the lives that have been lost and the freedoms we all enjoy and take part in one of the many events happening in the area to celebrate. On Memorial Day, a parade will be held in Ellicottville at 10:45 a.m., beginning on Mill Street and moving up Washington Street to the monument on the village square. The American Legion Post 659 will conduct a service at 11 a.m. featuring a speech from Mayor Burrell and a 21-gun salute from the honor guard. An open house will follow at the Post Club. This weekend, Adventure Bound on the Fly is hosting several events. On Friday, May 26, the store will host a customer appreciation Friday evening social at 5 p.m. on the demo paddle center featuring stand up paddle boards and kayaks to demo free of charge as well as shop staff on hand to teach basic paddle strokes and technique. On Saturday, May 27, guests are invited to participate in a group kayak or paddleboard outing on Cattaraugus Creek from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also, Monday, May 29 will be the kickoff of Adventure Bound On the Fly Guided Fishing Trips. Holiday Valley is also a great place to be this weekend. Its three-pool complex will

Camping Season Is Here! By Alicia Dziak
While summer isn’t quite here, it’s definitely on its way, and with the longer days and warmer temps, it can only mean one thing for all the great outdoorsmen and women out there—camping season is upon us! Whether you prefer roughing it under the stars, being deep in the woods or in a heated cabin near your neighbor, there’s something to suit every camping style. Head to Allegany State Park (ASP) for a hotbed of camping activities. ASP is New York’s largest state park, and boasts hundreds of camp sites and cabins on a variety of trails. There are even fullservice cottages that include bathrooms for those who want to try camping but not quite ready to give up the comforts of home. Try to sneak in a couple nights before school lets out when the park isn’t as busy, or make plans to get there in the summer when there is an abundance of planned activities. Starting in late June and running through Labor Day weekend, visitors can enjoy a full schedule of programs during the week, such as guided hikes and See Camping Season page 5
Local Favorite Moves Down the Street By Caitlin Croft
Katy’s Cafe opened in March of 2012 between the old Ellicottville Inn Building (where Ava Grace Fashions currently is) and the retail store Alexandria. It was an instant success, featuring funky coffee drinks and unique, delicious breakfast sandwiches and wraps. And their lunch options—don’t get me started! I personally am there 4-5 days a week even just to say hi to their awesome staff. There have been so many memories shared in that space and customers became family, but after five years, it’s time for Katy’s to grow into a larger space. Their new location will be in the old Coffee

Residents Support WMA By Jann Wiswall
A dozen or more town and village residents attended the Town of Ellicottville board meeting on Wednesday, May 17 to express support for the NY Department of Conservation’s interest in purchasing a large land parcel in Ellicottville and Mansfield for designation as a Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The 996-acre property,
about a third of which lies in Ellicottville and the balance in Mansfield, is owned by the Dattner Family and includes the former Poverty Hill/Concord Ski areas. It is being appraised by the DEC, which has not yet made an offer. It will be up to the property owners and the DEC to negotiate a sale. According to the DEC, WMAs are actively managed to See Town Board page 4
