Honor Fallen Heroes This Memorial Day

We

BY ALICIA DZIAK

As we wrap up our final look this week at Kids Can Make a Difference, we’d like to commend all those SGI seventh graders who participated in these service projects. A lot of us can learn from these students who volunteered with an organization of their choice. We hope they will carry with them the lessons they learned through the program. Speaking of student achievements, congratulations goes out to both varsity baseball and softball programs on playoff game wins. Both teams advanced past the first round before losing their respective second round games. We were disappointed at the beginning of the year to hear about the absence of the Dairy Festival this year, but we’re happy to report that many of the craft vendors are taking advantage of another Springville event — Fire Trucks and Food Trucks — and will be available there. It’s making the best of the situation and hopefully gives the local fire company an even better turnout for its event. Have good news to share? Email us at info@ springvilletimes.com or stop by our office at 65 E. Main St. in Springville.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to the summer, many times involving family picnics, great shopping deals and a day off. Before you pull out those white pants and head to the mall, take a few moments to reflect on the true reason for this holiday: remembrance. This weekend, make sure your American flag is flying, immerse yourself in patriotism and take a few moments to reflect on the lives that have been lost and the freedoms we all enjoy. Springville’s annual Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Monday, May 28. The parade will form on South Buffalo Street by the log cabin and Veteran’s Park at 10 a.m. and will proceed north on Buffalo Street to Main Street and turn on West Main Street to Maplewood Cemetery. Also on Monday, May 28, the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial Grove Committee will host its

Close Loss Ends SGI Baseball Season in Playoffs

With Absence of Dairy Fest,

Vendors Heading to Fire Trucks, Food Trucks Event BY RICH PLACE

If the 2-1 final score of the Springville varsity baseball team’s playoff loss to Depew on Saturday isn’t enough to show just how close the game was, try measuring the loss in feet. With a runner on second base and two outs in the game’s final

Although the cancellation of this year’s Dairy Festival means crafters and vendors won’t be streaming into the village during the first weekend of June, shoppers will still get a chance to browse their favorite stands this summer. Phil Drozd, co-chair of the second annual Springville Fire Trucks and Food Trucks, said the event scheduled for July 22 is expected to include a handful of vendors seeking to come to Springville following the absence of the Dairy Festival. “All is not lost this year with having a vendor and craft fair in the village,” he said. Crafters and other vendors will be new to this year’s Fire Trucks and Food Trucks event, which will also include the same attractions as last year including a selection of food trucks, live music and a car show. “We didn’t have anything like this last year,” Drozd said about the crafters and vendors. “It actually started out with just a couple of vendors who wanted to set up down there and now it kind of mushroomed. We are hoping for about 20 vendors at this point.” Vendors are expected to be located both in their own stands outside and also inside the old bingo hall. Another change from last year’s event is the date, as organizers

Memorial Day and the Springville Parade BY JOLENE HAWKINS As we celebrate Memorial Day this weekend, do you find yourself wondering how Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day) got started and what it meant? On May 5, 1866 in Waterloo, N.Y., they celebrated by closing businesses and the residents decorated the graves of the fallen soldiers with flowers and flags. After the war, Americans in various towns and cities began having tributes to the countless fallen soldiers by decorating their graves. It is unclear where and when this tradition originated. On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, a leader of GAR, called for a nationwide day of remembrance to be on May 30, for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land. This day was called Decoration Day. So how did our little Village of Springville celebrate it? In 1883, the GAR was making arrangements for flowers (these were grown by the local ladies and used upon this day) to be gathered for the graves of the fallen as well as having music and a small parade consisting of the Marshall of the day, George H. Barker, the Yorkshire band, Crary Post GAR, carrying the wreaths and flowers, the Fountain Hose Fire Department Company all in uniform, Citizens in Carriages. They met at the Log Cabin and marched See A Look Back page 6
