Remembering Our Fallen Heroes

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to the summer, many times involving family picnics, great shopping deals and a day off. Before you pull out those white pants and head to the mall, take a few moments to reflect on the true reason for this holiday: remembrance.

This weekend, make sure your American flag is flying, immerse yourself in patriotism and take a few moments to reflect on the lives that have been lost and the freedoms we all enjoy.

Ellicottville’s annual Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Monday, May 28 at 11 a.m. through the village.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and that means time to enjoy summertime fun! What else is more synonymous with warm weather than making a splash in a crystal clear swimming pool?

Holiday Valley’s three-pool complex opens on Saturday, May 25, and features a toddler pool, a lap pool and an activity pool with a slide and diving board. Relax on the sun decks, grab a drink from the Cabana Bar, or take in one of the many lawn games like Giant Jenga, table tennis and Connect Four.

The pools are open weekends only through June 18, then open daily after that through Labor Day. Pool hours are noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. In July and

ECS Announces Top Students

Ellicottville Central School has announced Kourtney Robinson is valedictorian for the Class of 2018 with a weighted average of 113.13.

Kourtney, who is the daughter of Ted and Tracy Robinson, will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors.

Kourtney Robinson Kourtney has been class treasurer for four years, president of the French Club, National Honor Society vice president, a member of Jazz Band and ESPRA (Ellicottville Students for the Preservation of Reading in America) treasurer.

Outside of the classroom, she has been on the varsity Lisa Krortz soccer team for four years, was captain her senior year, selected as a League First Team All-Star, was a Western New York Scholar Athlete and was the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.

Sky High Premieres New ‘Tarzan Swing’ On Friday, May 18, Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park celebrated the premier of their new obstacle, the Tarzan Swing. “Tarzan and Jane” played by Mike Paterniti and Quincy Widger, demonstrated the element, which involved swinging on a rope that launched from one platform, and landing on a giant cargo net. The obstacle was added onto the end of the “blue” intermediate-level Riptide course.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is Monday, May 28. While it is important to be grateful for our servicemen and women year-round, this is the special day set aside to honor loved ones who passed away in service to our country.

For many, it is a day when families everywhere come together to remember loved ones, share a meal together (hopefully outdoors) and celebrate the freedom we are so fortunate to have. Make this Memorial Day weekend a special time of remembrance and celebration with family and friends — there are so many ways to make it memorable!

One way to honor loved ones who passed away in service to our country is to adorn their gravesites with flowers. In ancient times, the Greeks and Romans decorated graves of the dead with flowers, and laying wreaths signaled high honors.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began during the Civil War when Southern women began decorating the graves of deceased Confederate soldiers. We still celebrate Memorial Day by placing flowers and wreaths on the graves of those who have fought for our freedom; of course, red, white and blue are the most popular colors on this special day.

To get started, arrange three racks of baby back ribs in a large glass or ceramic baking dish, overlapping slightly. In a medium bowl, whisk ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons of soy sauce with ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons of whiskey, ¼ cup of honey, 2 tablespoons of finely grated fresh ginger, 1 ½ teaspoons of white pepper, 1 teaspoon of sesame oil, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and ¼ teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg.

Pour the marinade over the ribs and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours.

Next, make the glaze and dipping sauce. In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup of honey with 2 tablespoons of hot water. In a medium bowl, combine ½ cup of fresh lime juice with ¼ cup of fish sauce, ¼ cup of soy sauce, ¼ cup of red pepper flakes, ¼ cup of cilantro and 2 tablespoons of sugar; stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil. Arrange the ribs on the baking sheet, meaty side up. Roast for about 2 hours, until tender. Baste the ribs with the honey mixture and roast for another 15 minutes, until browned and glossy. Remove the ribs from the oven and baste again with the honey mixture.

Preheat a grill. Grill the ribs over moderately high heat, turning once, until lightly charred, for about 4 minutes. Transfer the racks to a cutting board and cut into individual ribs. Arrange the ribs on a platter and serve the dipping sauce alongside.

Most recently, O’Brien presented to the Springville Village Board earlier this month to tell them about Private Robert Folts, an Ashford native and Springville student who died in July 1943 while serving in World War II. Kourtney is a certified Peer Tutor at ECS. She has volunteered her time playing in the band during graduation and on Memorial Day. She has spent time assisting at the Senior Citizen Dinner, Ellicottville town clean-up, Fall Festival parking, concession stands, raised money for Heifer International and has volunteered at Teacher’s Desk in Buffalo.

Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., in the fall, where she plans to dual major in math and chemistry.

Lisa is a member of Student Council and is currently the president. She is a member of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Drama Club, ESPRA (Ellicottville Students for the Preservation of Reading in America), Jazz Chorus, Jazz Band and French Club.

Outside the classroom, she has been a member of the varsity softball and varsity bowling teams.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS Ellicottville Students ‘Nerd Out’ at the Expo!

Every year, the ECS Math, Science, and Technology Exposition is a blast for students of all ages. On May 15, ECS took “blasting” to a whole new level! With a multitude of unique exhibits, this Expo may have been the best one yet.

Upon entering the Expo, fizzes, bangs, pops, whirs, and cracks were among the sounds that could be heard echoing throughout the newly-opened Ward.

The sixth graders, aided by their science teacher Chelsea Cole, were large contributors to the cacophony of scientific noise. Constructing volcanoes out of various crafting supplies, they made the mounds “erupt” using baking soda and vinegar. When asked what her favorite part of the experiment was, Cameron Kaleta screamed, “Watching them explode!”

Wandering around the fair, there was a variety of not only sounds, but smells. Karl Schwartz’s chemistry students performed a color changing acid-base experiment using cabbage juice and vinegar. The smell was an incomparable experience; a combination of cauliflower and skunk.

sophomore made over 50 colorful bath bombs for students to take home.

Proudly observing, Schwartz made some remarks about the occasion.

“This science, math, and technology Expo is a great event that exemplifies a small chunk of the year of learning, experimenting, and challenging the minds of our students,” said Schwartz. “Student and teacher pride is sure to be part of the evening as students show off new skills, concepts, experiments, and results.”

The student-led activities and experiments were certainly one of the Expo’s true highlights. Katie Krotz, along with Olivia Bacon, both seventh graders, demonstrated the ever-astounding “Hot Ice,” a supersaturated

solution of vinegar and baking soda that forms crystals when boiled. “I haven’t yet mastered the art of crystal-making,” said Krotz, gesturing to a printed image of a perfectly formed stalagmite, “but I’ll get there.”

Student exhibits ranged all the way from the kindergarteners “soundwaves” made from yarn and plastic straws, to an invisible ink activity, snap circuits, foil penny-boats, and the second graders’ recycled robots.

Chris Edwards, the under-appreciated and extremely capable organizer of the event, had both his Architectural Design and Robotics/ Engineering classes exhibit their projects for the year.

with real world features constructed by hand. The Robotics class had handson activities including robot constructing and programming.

Ann Chamberlain, in charge of her JCC Statistics class’s M&M counting exhibit, was happy to be a part of the event. “It’s cool to see all ages practicing science,” said the math teacher and resident ECS mindfulness expert, “and, most importantly, having fun!”

The Expo wouldn’t be complete, however, without the timeless, ever-classic egg drop. Performed by Helena Brierton’s Earth Science students and kindly facilitated by the local fire department, this messy experiment is a sure-fire crowd pleaser.

“The Ellicottville Science

Exposition is a great opportunity for students to highlight what they have learned during the school year, and to share their learning with parents, friends and family members,” said Brierton.

“Younger students get the opportunity to engage in various hands-on activities in science and technology.

The local fire department members have willingly provided their time and services for the annual egg drop competition in which students drop their egg drop designs from 80 feet up. This year, 20 students in the Earth Science classes at Ellicottville were able to compete. Three student

designs were successful in making the 80 foot plunge. This year’s winners included Noah Steinbroner, Jonah Rust and Alex Hunt.”

Science and technology expositions like these shape the future’s young minds. They wouldn’t be possible without passionate individuals like Chris Edwards, Helena Brierton, and all of ECS’s wonderful teachers and administrators.

As the school year draws to a close and everyone, students and teachers, itch for the vacation to start, the Science Expo is a reminder of why students love to learn, and why teachers love to teach them.

Bartoszek, Titans Ready for Summer with the Big 30

Chad Bartoszek certainly knows his way around the Big 30 Charities Classic.

Like most high school football players in the Southern Tier, he grew up hoping to play in the annual senior game between the best in the area from New York and Pennsylvania. He got that chance in 1999, playing for his high school coach, Salamanca’s George Whitcher, in his final game.

After a college career at the University at Buffalo and going to camp with the Indianapolis Colts for two years, he returned to the Big 30 game as an assistant on the staff of former Salamanca coach Jason Marsh.

Now, Bartoszek, the fifth-year head coach at Franklinville/Ellicottville (the last four under the F/E merger), he’s ready to lead New York as a head coach when the 45th Big 30 game kicks off Saturday, Aug. 4 at Bradford High’s Parkway Field. He drew on those years of memories almost two decades after playing in the game when he met with the New York team on Sunday for the Big 30 media day.

“I just sat down and wrote down everything I could think of and it all just started coming back,” Bartoszek said Sunday.

“I think the biggest thing is just the people, the teammates. When you’re in high school you’re kind of trained to not like someone from a different school. These kids are little more connected than we were through social media and other things, different types of travel teams, they connect better than we did but they still are rivals in some senses. So I think (my memories were) meeting new people, meeting new teammates, lifelong friends and of course playing for coach George Whitcher his last coaching game at the varsity level was a huge

honor as he was retiring, and winning.”

Citing the time commitment for a media day, coaches meetings and practices leading up to the game, Bartoszek said he wanted to make sure his family was ready before he accepted the Big 30 invitation.

“There’s a huge time commitment, so the decision was based off family,” he said. “We’ve got two young boys at home and my wife does a lot of that work when it’s football time and adding three extra weeks to that is difficult for her and our family. We’re starting to get to the point where it’s a little easier with the age of our kids and we’ve got a big class of Titans this year that we’re excited to coach. It just matched up.

On top of all that, even if all that was right, it doesn’t mean I would still do it, the biggest thing is just the game. The game has always been something that I appreciated. I appreciated being at, playing in it, coaching and it’s just a such a great game so giving back to it is important.”

Assisting Bartoszek will be Mark Blecha, Harley Butler and Marsh, all on his regular F/E staff, and former Salamanca assistant Aaron Hill, who has worked for USA Football for the last three years.

“I wanted all of our Titans staff to be able to do it,” Bartoszek said. “We asked to get six, they said we could have five. I asked everyone on our staff and a couple couldn’t make it. We had an opening and Aaron Hill’s been a friend of mine, we grew up together, he currently works with USA Football, so we connect a lot through there and he’s got a huge background in coaching and football. He loves the game and it was just an opportunity for him to get back into it a little bit.”

Bartoszek will coach the offense with help from Marsh and Butler, who will work with the lines.

Blecha, the Franklinville athletic director and former Panthers head coach, will be the defensive coordinator and Hill will work with the “back seven” (defensive backs, linebackers).

The game will give F/E’s staff a chance to work with five seniors again: Brock Blecha, Griffin Chudy, Austin Grinols, Deric Leiper and Walter Woodarek. The Class of 2018 helped establish the successful F/E program (32-8 with a Section 6 Class D championship and four finals appearances in four years) as the first freshmen in the merger.

“They were the first Titans,” Bartoszek said.

“They were ninth graders when we started it. They’ve had a full four-year career of being just Titans, so it’s definitely special. It’s kind of strange seeing Brock here today and the other guys who aren’t here (on a senior trip) — Chudy and Grinols and Leiper and Woodarek — they’ve always been around and now they’re going to be gone. Being able to coach them up at the game, hopefully give them a good experience, is important.”

Looking over the rest of the roster, Bartoszek sounds impressed.

“We just got to meet them today and we look pretty good, we look the part,” he said. “We’re missing some Randolph kids and some Ellicottville kids who are on a senior trip, but the kids look the part, they look ready to play. There are some talented, all-state-type players (at) skill positions. I was impressed a little bit with our size we had a the meeting. But none of that matters until you get the pads on and you see how they react to how they get hit by other really good football players, that opens things up. Plus, they’ve got to be in shape.”

Ellicottville junior Steven Rowland erupted at the plate in the Eagles’ varsity baseball regular season finale Wednesday at St. Bonaventure University against Randolph.

The third baseman went 4-for-4 with four RBI against the Cardinals, hitting a pair of two-run singles. He also closed the game, pitching the last 1 2/3 innings. He led a shorthanded playoff effort for the Eagles on Saturday, starting on the mound and recording the team’s only two hits in a first-round loss to Sherman.

Coach Chris Mendell’s Eagles closed the season at 9-11.

ALLISON PRZYWARA Sophomore, Softball

Sophomore pitcher Allison Przywara helped her Ellicottville varsity softball teammates finish the regular season with a victory on Thursday, May 17.

Przywara scattered seven hits over as many innings, holding Sherman to three runs and striking out seven batters.

With a 7-3 road non-league victory, the Eagles finished the regular season 6-10. They went on to fall 2-1 in a nailbiter Monday at Forestville in the Section 6 Class D quarterfinals.

A two-year starter, Przywara is set to return for coach Matt Finn’s team next spring.

Eagles Win Final Regular Season Game, Fall to Sherman in Playoffs

The Rowland brothers, junior Steven and freshman Clayton, marked six of Ellicottville’s eight hits and drove in seven runs, helping the Eagles’ baseball team finish the regular season on with a victory Wednesday, May 16.

Steven went 4-for-4 with a pair of tworun singles and Clayton was 2-for-4 with three RBI in a 10-7 non-league win over Randolph at St. Bonaventure’s Fred Handler Park, capping an 8-9 season before tonight’s Section 6 seeding meeting.

The Eagles took a 5-0 lead with just one hit in the first inning, thanks to four walks, an error and two hit batters, chasing starter Tommy Chapman for reliever Dakota Donaldson.

“We talk about getting the lead out every inning, which we didn't do for the first three innings,” Randolph coach Nate Armella said of his team’s 7-0 deficit through three. “We walked I don't know how many, we hit a couple batters, they only had one hit. Five runs off of one hit, that's on us. That's not anything they did, although give them credit, they played hard. It's frustrating but we responded towards the middle of the game.”

Ellicottville starter Frank Neff took advantage of his team’s early lead, holding the Cardinals (6-10) scoreless through four innings before a four-run fifth, finishing with seven strikeouts and five walks with two hits over 5 ⅓ innings.

“The past couple games we left a lot of guys stranded,” Ellicottville coach Chris Mendell said. “Today we seemed to capitalize a little more.

“But I was really pleased with Frank Neff.

He bounced back from his last performance.

The way he threw today was really good. He gave us a chance to win.”

For Randolph (6-10), Isaac Hind went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Jake Brown doubled and drove in two runs, helping cut the lead to 8-6 by the top of the sixth.

“The way their guy (Neff) was throwing, we had to start getting on him to get him out of the game,” Armella said. “We did get a couple timely hits and he, fortunately for us, go a little bit wild and we were able to chase him. If he stays in that game, I don't know if we get seven runs.”

Steven Rowland recorded the final five outs as the Eagles held on after Randolph cut the lead to 8-6 in the top of the fifth.

“He's hit the ball well all year, Mendell said. “He's been one of our top hitters and he

hasn't pitched a lot but he has pitched some.

We needed somebody to come in and throw strikes and he did exactly what we wanted.”

Mendell said the Eagles’ record, just under .500 and 4-6 in CCAA East II as the Class D playoffs approach, speaks to the competitiveness of their league.

“With the exception of maybe one or two games, we've been in every game up until the fifth, sixth inning,” he said. “Our league is very competitive is the deal. Anybody can beat anybody in our league and that's part of it. There's no easy games. You've got to dig and claw for everything you get. So overall I'm pleased. Would I like to be .500? Yeah, but the kids are playing hard, as a coach you ask them to play hard and they certainly do that.”

Likewise, Armella cited his team’s number of close games to consider this a strong season for the Cardinals going into the Class C playoffs.

“We have a 6-10 record and we could easily be 10-6,” Armella said. “It's just a few things here and there, timely hits, a couple mistakes in the field. But overall this has been by far the best team I've had and they're fun to be around, they play hard. I wouldn't count us out.”

Mendell said he tries to schedule a game at Bona or at Jamestown’s Diethrick Park at least once a year. For Armella, it was the Cardinals first trip to Bona in four years.

“For these guys, they've never been here,” Armella said. “There was a two, three-year stretch where we were here every year.

For these guys, we pulled up on the bus and they're like 'Oh my God, this thing's beautiful,' and they get down here and you let them run around a little bit to soak it in.

But this is a beautiful complex. It's awesome that they let us play here.”

Sherman 11, Ellicottville 1 ELLICOTTVILLE — Austin Freligh drove in four runs, hitting 2-for-4 with a double to lead Sherman’s offense in a road playoff win Saturday.

Derek Sears went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Mike Beatman was 2-for-4 with an RBI double for the No. 9 Wildcats. Caleb Burick and Beatman combined for a two-hitter, with Beatman striking out the side to close the seventh inning.

Steven Rowland had both hits for Ellicottville and struck out eight batters with three walks over five innings. The No. 8 Eagles (8-10) had just nine players available for the game due to a senior trip.

SOFTBALL RECAPS Forestville 2, Ellicottville 1 FORESTVILLE — Second-seeded Forestville (11-4) will play No. 3 North Collins in Thursday’s Class D semifinals after edging No. 7 Ellicottville (6-11).

5 Reasons Why Your Weight Lifting Routine Isn’t Working

If you are one of the many people who feel you are working out consistently, but so far your muscles aren’t looking any more sculpted than when you started, if you’ve been putting in the work but not seeing results, it’s likely that something is wrong with your workout—not your willpower. Avoid five common strength training mistakes with these tips from weight lifting guru Wayne Westcott, PhD, Prevention advisory board member and director of fitness research at Quincy College in Massachusetts, and you’ll be a lot closer to achieving that lean, strong body you’re after.

Mistake No. 1: You’re ditching the warm up. While it’s

tempting to forgo a proper warm up, taking a few minutes for a quick walk or jog on the treadmill will help you get more out of your strength training

routine. “A warm up increases the temperature of your muscles and tendons, making them more elastic so you’re less likely to injure yourself,” says Westcott. Besides, you’ll burn a few extra calories too!

Mistake No. 2: You’re using the wrong amount of weight. Too heavy, and

you could injure yourself, too little and you’re wasting your time. When you’re new to strength training, start with 1 to 2 sets of 15 to 20 reps using a lighter weight (about 50 percent of your maximum lift, i.e., the amount of weight you can lift once).

As you become stronger, graduate to two or three sets of 10 to 15 reps with heavier weight (60 to 75 percent of your max lift).

Mistake No. 3: Your form is sloppy.

Lifting too quickly and using momentum are two common culprits that can lead to injury and make your workout less effective. In fact, slower is better when it comes to weight lifting. “Moving slowly actually allows you to produce more muscle force, without putting extra stress on your joints.

If you’re using inertia, the weight pretty much

carries itself, so you’re not getting as good of a workout,” says Westcott.

(Weight lifting isn’t the only exercise where bad form can hurt you.)

Mistake No. 4: Your routine is older than your favorite college sweatshirt.

It’s easy to fall into a workout rut, doing the same few moves over and over. Swapping in a few new moves every few weeks will help you avoid plateaus. “Your muscles adapt to moves, and you no longer see the same gains in strength after a few weeks,” says Westcott.

“Even changing up your workout slightly—say by swapping your tried-andtrue bench press with an incline press—will shock your muscles and speed results.”

Mistake No. 5: You’re standing still between sets. If you

normally rest between sets, you’re missing out on the calorie-burn boost that’s found in adding mini cardio bursts, like a 2-5 minute jog on the treadmill or jumping rope.

You’ll burn more calories, and you can cross off both your cardio and strength training in one 30- to 45-minute workout, says Westcott.

60th Allegany Nature Pilgrimage is June 1-3

As summertime fast approaches, so do the long days of being outside and exploring nature. As New York’s largest state park, Allegany State Park beckons guests to enjoys its 65,000 sprawling acres, and the Allegany Nature Pilgrimage is a great way to see much of what the park has to offer.

The Pilgrimage includes numerous nature-inspired workshops and programs for all ages, and there is definitely something for everyone. Make your own schedule designed around your personal interests, with programs running from 90 minutes long to a half day.

“Big Tent” evening programs feature informative talks. On Friday, check out Today’s Office Sharon Stiteler a.k.a. “The Bird Chick” ​author and founder of birdchick.com, as she humorously takes us to her many outdoor “offices” leading birdwatching trips around the planet! ​Sharon is the author of 1001 Secrets Every Birder Should Know, Disapproving Rabbits and City Birds/Country Birds, and appears regularly on TV and radio, including outdoor news radio, All Things Considered and has been on the NBC nightly news answering bird questions.

On Saturday evening, get it on Dinosaur Day with Paleo Joe. Cell Phone Nature Photography, led by Chris Myers You do not need a fancy camera in order to create art or document your observations.

We will cover the basics of photography (composition and lighting) as well as cellphone camera operation (focusing, exposure, etc...). Whether you want to make prints, create videos of wildlife, record the sounds of nature, or simply use you images for later identification.

Dragonfly & Damselfly Walk, led by Jeremy Martin We will review the life cycle of these fascinating creatures and then attempt to get up close and personal with a few resident species in the park. Kids will love trying to catch the flying adults and dipping for the nymphs in the water. Most years we have been lucky enough to find them emerging. We will have some nets available, but feel free to bring your own.

Fairy Houses for Little Ones, led by Lauren Makeyenko This program is geared for children ages 8 and under. Nature is full of lots of surprises--maybe even fairies! Kids will be able to build a house in the woods for Camp Allegany’s fairies and nature’s friends to visit. The simple challenge of creating a fairy house gives children a unique activity that encourages them to go outside and connect with the natural world, nurturing care and respect for the environment. Please wear clothes that can get dirty. A short story will be read at the beginning.

Family Folk Concert, led by Nan Hoffman Enjoy the music during and after your chicken or vegetarian dinner on Saturday evening!

musician, performer, recording artist, and workshop presenter.

Her presentations are fun and informative, and much of her material invites audience participation.

History of Allegany State Park - Red House Area, led by Harold Stock Learn a bit about the history of the Red House side of Allegany State Park. We will cover topics including the native people who lived in this area, the Olympic Ski Jump, Red House Lake, CCC Camps and the Park Zoo. Tour requires some driving and mild walking.

Monarch Butterfly Recovery, Health & Habitat, led by David O’Donnell This program is designed to provide updated information on the Eastern Monarch Butterfly population and habitat in NY. Though live displays we will demonstrate the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly, give instructions on proper care of larvae, provide info on signs of disease in both plants and butterflies, discuss native plants and learn the benefits of increasing biodiversity on your own property to promote positive environmental changes that give a sense of individual empowerment.

Splash Hike, led by Lon Myers Come prepared to get wet.

Beavers, crayfish, salamanders, water.... Did we mention you will get wet? Bring water shoes. A fun family activity!

Tree Identification for Beginners, led by Marie Erck We will take a small hike in the area around Camp Allegany, learning to identify trees typically found in Allegany State Park.

Wild Edible Plants led by Adele Wellman Ever wonder what you could eat in the woods? Learn about some of our common edible plants and their uses. Suitable for all ages. ​

In two years, the town of Ellicottville will commemorate its 200th birthday and members of the Ellicottville Historical Society have commenced plans for the celebration in 2020.

Dawn Westfall, president of the Ellicottville Historical Society, is following in the footsteps of Marilyn Siperek, Great Valley’s town historian, who started planning that town’s bicentennial two years ago.

“It was slow going at first because people thought they had plenty of time to plan it,” Westfall said. “But it really does take a couple of years to plan something like this — to get things going, to put the word out and to try to connect with other people.”

No date has been set yet, but Westfall thinks it will be a year of ongoing celebration events similar to Great Valley’s events this year. The town of Great Valley began its bicentennial celebration April 15 — the date the town was established 200 years ago. She said they might do the same thing for the town of Ellicottville.

Westfall, who calls herself a transplanted Floridian that came to the Great Valley/ Ellicottville area 18 years ago, has a huge interest in history and genealogy.

“Family history brings people together.

It isn’t a community unless it has roots and history,” she said. “I enjoy helping people find their roots and make family connections because it gives me a lot of satisfaction.”

Westfall said people at the initial meeting on May 9 came up with a lot of great ideas including concerts, cakes, calendars, home tours, recipes, storefronts and skiing celebrations. Someone on the committee mentioned having an actual Day of Proclamation which, she said, is another good idea.

During their discussions, the committee was wondering when the last Old Home Week was held in Ellicottville. Westfall said they haven’t done a lot of research yet, but they’re thinking it was in the late 1930s or so.

“I was looking in some old Ellicottville Post newspapers that are online and I saw a letter to the editor that the high school students sent to The Post in 1947 saying they were disappointed that they were not having an Old Home Week in Ellicottville that year. I’m not sure if that was the end of the event, so I have to research that more.

I’m sure somebody will help me answer that question,” she said. “That might be a time period that we can pinpoint to develop events for the bicentennial.”

The Bicentennial Committee currently includes the core members of the Ellicottville Historical Society including Westfall, who is president; Ellen Sirianni Frank, vice president; Judy Brown, treasurer; Carolyn Litchfield Bauer, secretary; Mary Elizabeth Dunbar, town historian; and Faith and George Burgard, who recently came onboard to help with the planning. Westfall said anybody can be a part of the planning committee and several other people in the community who are not historical society members have reached out.

At each monthly meeting, there will be a discussion on the bicentennial.

Westfall said they’re just getting started and, even if someone does not want to serve on a committee, they will welcome their ideas. She hopes more people will come and want to participate. She’s thinking groups from different agencies, organizations and former high school classes in Ellicottville will get together to add their input at some point.

“We really want to get other people involved, and we’re looking for those who have ideas. If they choose, people could be armchair researchers and do some research for us because we have all the newspapers online for The Ellicottville Post at fultonhistory.com,” she said.

Westfall also said she’d like to invite Holiday Valley and HoliMont to get involved because skiing is a huge part of what Ellicottville is all about. She said they’ll be looking for some history about skiing in Ellicottville.

“It’s not necessary to have lived here for six or seven generations to be a part of this historical town,” she said.

“We have lots and lots of visitors that could be a part of this celebration as well because they have memories of Ellicottville, one way or the other.”

The next historical society meeting will be held June 13 at 7 p.m. The meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month, May through October, at the Ellicottville Memorial Library at 6499 Maples Road. See their Facebook page for a list of the speakers series.

COMMUNITY Local Law #2-2018 Approved

The May meeting of the Town Board opened with the Public Hearing on Local Law #2-2018.

Next there was a motion to approve the minutes from the April meeting; there was a second and ayes carried. This motion was followed by one to pay the Town Bills on Distribution Report #062018; there was a second and ayes carried.

Supervisor’s Report: First there was a motion to accept the report; there was a second and ayes carried. Town Supervisor Matthew McAndrew Town Supervisor attended Finance School at Holiday Valley and attended classes on topics such as Shared Services and Highway Maintenance. The 2020 Census will be mailed out soon from the State, and people will be able to respond via mail or online. The deadline for the Downtown Revitalization Initiative Grant is approaching quickly. “Time is of the essence,” McAndrew stated. The Board understands that this could be a two year initiative and would be even better prepared to reapply next year if necessary.

There was a motion to accept the Clerk’s, Justices’, Building Inspector’s, Planner’s and Police Reports; there was a second and ayes carried.

Police Report: Don Auge commented on the new part-time Officer, Jesse Barber.

He has already made an immediate impact and is an asset to the department. There was a written correspondence

received from a couple whom Officer Barber aided when their tire popped on Washington Street. In the letter, they thanked Officer Barber for his assistance in changing the tire getting them back on the road quickly. Auge asked the Board for approval to hire Officer Barber on as FullTime Temporary. There was a motion to hire; a second and ayes carried.

Engineering Report: Niles Pierson advised that he has organized monthly staff meetings between Department Heads. The inventory of assets will be complete in the Village and Town by the end of June and ready to enter into the GIS Mapping system. The inventory will aid in more efficient maintenance of our water and sewer system.

Pierson asked that instead of hiring an Assistant Engineer with part of the grant money that they continue to keep on Bob Scharf on through then end of the year. This way Pierson could look into obtaining an intern from the University at Buffalo or RIT and potentially bring them on at the end of the year when Scharf is done. There was a motion to approve Bob Scharf staying on 15 hours per week until December 31, 2018; a second and ayes carried. The processes and procedures of day to day tasks will soon be digitized. Pierson has been researching Information Technology Companies as there will be a need in the near future. He is trying to find a Minority and Women-Owned Business (MWB) to provide this service as 30 percent of the grant money needs

Next the Board made a motion to close the Public Hearing on Local Law #2-2018 regarding Electronic Signs; there was a second and ayes carried. There was a motion on the Town of Ashford Resolution which is in support of Clean up at the WNY Nuclear Facilities; a second and ayes carried.

Old Business: The Ellicottville Great Valley Trail obtained 501(c)(3) status.

Correspondence: The State is implementing a Secual Harassment Training Program throughout the state for municipalities and requirements are in the works.

The next meeting of the Town Board will be at 6 p.m. at the Town/Village Hall on Wednesday, June 20.

Numerous Allegany State Park Cabins Getting Upgraded If you’re an Allegany State Park enthusiast, you know there are hundreds of cabins in the park ranging from the large Taft cabin with two porches and running water to the very basic Creekside cabins just one trail over.

Some cabins appear to have been recently updated, while others could use some TLC. If spending your summer days at the park is high on your priority list, your options for updated cabins are about to increase.

Ryan Cabin Trail Renovations The 10 historic cabins on Ryan Trail received major exterior renovations last summer and fall with the help of HistoriCorps (which saves historic places for public benefit through partnerships that foster public involvement, engage volunteers and provide training and education), a not-for-profit building preservation organization that trains volunteers to learn how to restore historic structures.

Their crews focused on a number of building

tasks on the exteriors of the cabins including stabilizing support piers, installing new roofs and copper flashing, repairing and replacing portions of siding, rehabilitating windows, repairing flooring and steps and was capped off with painting of the entire exteriors.

Alfred State College also participated on this unique collaboration between HistoriCorps and Allegany State Park. As HistoriCorps wrapped up their project work late last fall, park tradespersons went to work over the winter months on making some additional improvements to the cabin interiors.

The pine paneling in each cabin was sandblasted using a special corn media in order to remove the old darkened finish, much of which had graffiti. Wood burning fireplace inserts were installed along with refinishing the fireplace mantles. Once that special process was completed, staff re-coated each cabin interior with clear finish.

Maximizing Visitors Conference to be Held at Holiday Valley

A team of Secret Shoppers recently toured a number of communities in Cattaraugus County, searching for municipalities and entrepreneurs to capitalize on the millions of potential travelers that reside within three hours of the Enchanted Mountains.

Cooperative Extension Seeks Help in Survey

ELLICOTTVILLE — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County has joined with three neighboring counties in a survey of local agriculture to determine its service needs.

Richard E. Rivers, the interim executive director at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County, said Cattaraugus joined Chautauqua, Allegany and Steuben counties in the survey.

It is available both online on the respective counties’ Extension websites and by requesting a printed copy be mailed, Rivers said.

The Agriculture Advisory Committee for the Cattaraugus County Cooperative Extension have long wanted to restart this county’s agriculture program, Rivers said.

They are looking for local information on what products and crops farmers are growing and what their needs are as far as a local source of information.

Cattaraugus County started running its own Cooperative Extension three years ago after many years as a joint operation with Allegany County.

“None of us have the resources to offer a complete program in all the agriculture areas,” Rivers

said, adding that if each county had one agriculture specialist that could be shared with the other three counties it would be a big improvement.

“We hope we can put things together and get the financial backing we need,” Rivers said. “It’s the next step in building up our agriculture program.”

“Then we are going to have to get back with our Agriculture Committee and see what we would like to recommend to our board,” Rivers said.

The board would like to start the program up next year, but will need additional resources.

Correction

Due to reporter error, a story in the May 18 edition about a Great Valley Town Board meeting incorrectly reported that sewage spills led to a fine for the town of Great Valley from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Correctly stated, the sewage systems did not spill, according to Great Valley Supervisor Daniel Brown.

Two $1,000 fines — which have since been reduced to $500 each — were placed on the town by the DEC for failure to register two private subdivision septic systems in the time allotted by the department.

Brown said part of the delay to register was because the sewage systems were privately owned so town officials were not aware they were expected to register them on behalf of the owners.

The Ellicottville Times regrets the error.

County May Transfer Former Ellicottville Cutlery to Village the county legislature’s County Operations/ Public Safety Committee conducted a closed-door executive session on the issue after it was raised by Legislator Joseph Snyder, R-Ischua.

County Attorney Eric Firkel suggested the executive session after legislators spent several minutes discussing the property.

Before the executive session was called, Snyder said the property was in “legal limbo” because the county had not foreclosed on it.

“Ellicottville wants to take control,” Snyder said. “There are a couple of buildings there that are falling down.” He said he wanted to know what the county could do to get it

Cattaraugus County lawmakers are looking for a way to deed a former Ellicottville cutlery to the village, which has expressed interest in acquiring the property.

The former Burrell Cutlery property, 24 Rockwell Ave., Ellicottville, was about to be taken by the county for nonpayment of back property taxes several years ago.

The property was among a handful that County Treasurer Joseph G. Keller recommended be investigated for possible contamination before the county seized the properties for back taxes.

Daniel Martonis, director of the Real Property Tax Services Office said a phase two study was performed on the property along with two other former industrial sites in the county. He said he doesn’t believe there are any underground storage tanks on the property.

The committee adjourned without taking any action.

IN OTHER NEWS, Crystal Abers, director of the Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism expects officials from the company that conducted studies in Ellicottville, Franklinville and Gowanda to attend committee meetings in June to discuss the findings.

Martonis asked for two new positions in the Real Property Tax Services Office, a full-time assessor and a part-time data collector. Martonis said more towns are asking the county to take over their assessing functions.

“People will blame the Legislature” if their assessment goes up, warned Legislator Vergilio “Dick” Giardini,

D-Allegany. He said he didn’t recall anyone’s assessment going down during a revaluation of a town.

Martonis said his experience has shown that in a revaluation, about one-third of the properties go down, one-third stay the same and one-third go up.

“The big thing for me is that people are paying their fair share of the tax,” Giardini said.

“Until everyone is paying 100 percent (assessment), no one is paying a fair share,” Martonis replied.

Martonis has a staff of five in his office. They are assessors for three towns and three more towns are getting assistance. As more assessors get toward the

end of their terms, several are planning to retire.

Some towns have expressed interest in having the county conduct their assessments, revals and data collection. “It’s not a county take-over, but a partnership,” Martonis told the Olean Times Herald.

It’s also Monday through Friday coverage through a voice on the phone at the county Real Property Tax Services Office. Many town assessors have limited hours and are hard to reach.

Martonis said the new positions will help his office to straighten out assessments in the town of Dayton as well as prepare for future assessing work with the towns.

Gowanda Harley Davidson (GHD) will soon move into the space that was once the old Kabob’s Restaurant, adjacent to the Balloons Patio. Shane Steward, GHD’s Marketing Manager, took time out of his busy schedule to tell me all about this new adventure. “We (GHD) go to Ellicottville all the time and have thought about a store in the Village for a handful of years now,” he said. Steward conveyed that Ellicottville “made sense” seeing as the community is moving rapidly toward being a four-season destination. Plus on a sunny summer day you can guarantee there will be a bevy of motorcycles lining the streets of our Village enjoying the shops and restaurants!

Steward explained how this longrunning idea turned into a reality. One of their Service Managers knows an EBC employee and was able to connect GHD and the owner of EBC and quickly after, a deal was brokered. “Peter has been great to work with and has helped rework the inside of the building to better suit our needs,” Steward said.

Since finding out about their opening, many area businesses have reached out to partner for events. “The community outreach here is unlike anything else, we (GHD) quickly realized that we made the right decision. We feel as if we have been welcomed with open arms.”

The store will only contain retail items such as helmets, hats, jackets, general merchandise and all of the gear you

need to be dressed in style head to toe.

“Basically everything but the actual bikes, service department and parts will be available,” Steward noted. When asked how this was possible to have two locations so close together, Steward advised that all dealerships have territories and seeing as Ellicottville was in their territory and they would only be doing retail, it was allowable.

A little history on GHD: They opened in 1947 when John S. Reid decided to leave a steady job to open a Harley-Davidson store. To this day, members of the family still own and operate the Gowanda location and they have grown beyond what they could have ever imagined over the years. GHD has done a wonderful job adapting with the times and generations.

“Not many brands have been able to navigate the ever-changing retail market with such grace as Harley-Davidson and we are proud to be dealers of their products,” Steward said. GHD recently celebrated their 70th birthday and has served three generations of customers.

They are proud to expand on their family tradition of business and begin a new journey in Ellicottville.
