Every year, there comes a special time in the season when those who really take advantage of all Holiday Valley has to offer can enjoy both activities — the end of the ski season and the beginning of the golf season. When these two seasons collide, usually around the first or second week of April, there’s the chance to take that last run of the season, along with the first swing. Thanks to winter lingering around, that special time may have to wait another week as Holiday Valley plans to potentially add a bonus weekend to the skiing season. “We’re definitely open through Sunday, April 8,” said Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at Holiday Valley “At this time, we’re planning to have a bonus weekend, April 14-15, with the Yodeler lift running — weather and skier traffic permitting.” Holiday Valley is advising those interested

Ellicottville’s Cupcaked Racich Retires as HV’s Lounsbury Director Meets Springville

By Alicia Dziak

It’s hard to believe that Cupcaked, at 22 Monroe St. in Ellicottville, just celebrated its six-month anniversary. The bakery, which boasts a selection of brownies, cookies, cake pops and, of course, cupcakes, (many of which come in gluten free options!) has quickly become a staple in the village scene. Just two weeks ago, Cupcaked owner Annie Coe took on a new challenge when she began partnering with 49 Coffee House and Eatery in Springville. The new coffee house, named after its location at 49 East Main See Cupcaked page 6

Upcoming Events at Allegany State Park

By Sam Wilson

Looking at Evan Palmatier, you might assume he’s just like any other high school student on the fields or court for Ellicottville Central School’s sports teams. In many ways, he is, playing with his friends and notably memorizing handshakes or greetings with his basketball teammates during starting introductions. But for Palmatier, a senior playing football, basketball and baseball at ECS, his preparation isn’t quite like his peers’. For every sporting event, he wears a special “hex pad”

After nearly 20 years as director of the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, Mary Ellen Racich will retire in May and pass the torch to assistant director Bill Bredenberg. Racich said she has led the Lounsbury program for so many years because it has been extremely rewarding to see disabled people able to do what others do recreationally. She said it makes their lives more fulfilling and when she sees that, it makes her own life more fulfilling. She said the program’s volunteer instructors are
