Steelbound Plans to Open Doors May 7

Steelbound Brewery & Distillery, the 5,000 square feet building at 6600 Route 219 in Ellicottville (across from Tim Horton’s), will soon be ready to welcome guests from all over WNY. With an opening day planned for Monday, May 7, Steelbound will offer brews, signature drinks and fresh food.

After some name confusion within the industry, the restaurant/ bar changed its former name of Stillhouse to Steelbound. It’s owned by William Bursee, a retired building contractor who now lives in Springville.

While Bursee originally planned to open the brewery in Buffalo, he was drawn to Ellicottville’s beauty, and made the decision to open here when he and his wife drove by the current location and saw the “for sale” sign.

ECS Board Continues to Discuss School Safety

Superintendent Robert Miller told members of the Ellicottville Board of Education on Tuesday that he is looking into the cost of a consultant’s walk-through and safety assessment of the school building in the wake of the March 23 lockout and shelter-in-place.

He said the consultant is a retired New York State Trooper.

“School safety — it’s in the front of my mind due to what happened in March,” Miller said.

He said he has met with the Ellicottville Police Department and the New York State Troopers,

and the next meeting will be with the Safety Committee as he begins to draft changes to the safety procedures.

Miller said the Cattaraugus County Emergency Services Department is always ready to help and local law enforcement agencies can also perform an assessment.

“We have a plan, it isn’t perfect but did it work? Absolutely,” Miller said, adding new procedures will cover safety, technology and professional development.

Holiday Valley Plans $3.2M in Upgrades This week, Holiday Valley announced they are planning a $3.2 million upgrade this year.

“As an independent resort we are very proud of what we have been able to accomplish in our 61 year history,” according to Dennis Eshbaugh, president.

“Together with this year’s projects we have reinvested over $130 million in the resort over the past 25 years.

What this means is better experiences for our visitors throughout the year.”

‘Alexandra’ to Celebrate 25 Years in Business

This year marks the 25th anniversary for Alexandra, one of Ellicottville’s gift shops and keystone businesses. Anyone looking for the perfect gift has a good chance to find it at Alexandra.

Located at 10 Washington St. in the heart of downtown Ellicottville, Alexandra is a contemporary gift store where shoppers will find a wide selection of items including handcrafted pottery and glassware, handcrafted jewelry, bath and body products, picture frames and fashion accessories.

Over the years, Alexandra has developed a large following, especially for cards and paper products.

Owner Joan Ess, of Williamsville, said she has always searched for unusual, well-priced, high-quality merchandise and most is American- or Canadian-made. She is proud to carry handiwork made by women refugees, fair-trade items and products offered by companies that “give back.” She does all the merchandise buying on her own, but manager Lynn Timon helps with reordering.

“We are especially proud to carry jewelry and pottery made by

local, American and Canadian artists, such as hand-painted glassware

by Golden Hill Studio.

We recently acquired a selection of magical gicleé prints by Eli Halpin, an Alaskan-born artist who now resides in Austin, Texas,” she said.

Timon, of Ellicottville, said she has managed the store for 18 years this September, and she feels blessed to work there.

She said the shop carries one product in particular that customers seem to love, which is a line of pottery from Hilborn Pottery that’s handmade by ceramic artist Nancy Hilborn of Cambridge, Ontario.

“It’s a very organic looking pottery that is very unique in shape, color and finish,” she said. “People love it and many people come in to get more pieces

to keep adding on to what they already have.”

Ess said the first store, founded in Buffalo in May 1993, was named after her daughter, Xandra, then it was moved to Williamsville.

“I opened the second location in Ellicottville, in 1997, because I enjoyed the atmosphere and energy of the town and wanted to participate in the growth of the village,” she said.

Although Alexandra has been a presence among the gift shops of Ellicottville for a quarter-century, Ess said her store is not one of Ellicottville’s oldest. She said Earth Arts has been in business for over 40 years and Kazoo II for about 30 years.

The new brewery sits on about 2 acres, with plenty of space for parking. The restaurant portion of the building is two floors, each with its own bar, and has a capacity of 307 guests.

The brewing equipment is located toward the back of the building.

Steelbound, which has been brewed at the current location for the past couple of months, is currently on tap at many area bars and restaurants, from WNY to Rochester to Syracuse.

Tim Hooker of Springville, a former ELA teacher and longtime craft beer brewer, directs the brewing operation.

The flagship location in Ellicottville will offer a variety of beers, from stouts to ales. Bursee said their most popular brew is the Last Minute IPA, which he describes as a juicy, New England style.

Steelbound will also offer signature drinks made with their own simple syrups, making them truly one-of-a-kind.

“Our chef is absolutely incredible,” said Bursee, noting he will even be making his own condiments for the dishes.

Ingredients will be sourced locally and everything will be fresh. A Tuesday night buffet will be available, changing from week to week. To celebrate the opening of the restaurant, they will also be offering a special Mother’s Day buffet on Sunday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that includes unlimited soft drinks and a cash bar.

Bursee said Steelbound will employ about 30 people, 12 of them full-time. He repeatedly complimented his team and their dedication to

the business. “They work tirelessly,” he said. “It’s cool to see that passion.”

As far as future plans go, Bursee hopes to build a large patio in front, overlooking Route 219.

Since he grew up in Buffalo, he likes the idea of the patio looking out onto all the activity going on, instead of being behind the building. Bursee also plans to feature live music, and there is a large stage on the first floor of the restaurant to accommodate musicians.

He also talked of possibly organizing tours in the future that involved other breweries/distilleries in the area.

For many, a sure sign of the warmer days to come is the season opening of many area parks. One of the region’s hidden gems is Griffis Sculpture Park, nestled in the hills of East Otto, a short drive off Route 219 between Springville and Ellicottville.

Since the early 1960s, over 250 sculptures of Larry Griffis Jr. and other international artists have been residing in the woods and fields of the 450acre park, which is one of America’s oldest and largest sculpture parks. Add in miles of scenic hiking trails and the experience is one where art and nature collide.

The park is split into two sections, each with its own parking area. The Rohr Hill Road Site is characterized by towering sculptures set in fields and woods just off the road. The Mill Valley Road Site features miles of trails through a variety of terrain, perhaps most notably the semi-

ECS NEWS Ellicottville Students Mind their Ps and Qs

On Thursday, April 19, Ellicottville Central School’s ESPRA (Ellicottville Students Preserving the Reading of America) Club visited another acronymic organization. WNYBAC, or the Western New York Book Arts Center, is a group of craftsmen and artisans dedicated to the preservation and love of the art of book-making. Located on Washington St. in Buffalo, WNYBAC’s quaint storefront doesn’t even begin to reveal the magic going on inside.

The smell is what hit us first: ink and old wood.

The basement was full of old-fashioned printing presses, the kind where you painstakingly place each

letter of type and roll the paper through.

Rosemary Williams, WNYBAC’s program director, explained every step in the printing process and taught us typesetter lingo. The little letter blocks are called sorts, and the big, organized boxes of them are called California job cases, though no one knew the history of the term. We learned the reason behind the saying “mind your Ps and Qs,” for those are the letters most confused by typesetters. ESPRA agreed that the saying should be changed to “mind your Bs, Ds, Ps, and Qs” because as we were challenged to sort the letters back into the job case, they all looked the same.

After we became acquainted with the process,

it was finally time to use the printing press. “So many books, so little time”, a quote by Frank Zappa, had been set in the press prior to our arrival, and ESPRA chose a vibrant blue ink mixed with yellow to print onto the paper. In the process, we learned about pica, the printer’s measurement unit of choice.

(It’s about 1/6 of an inch).

As the ink mesmerizingly spread across the rollers, we took a look around the basement. Many posters and book pages were set up across the room. Some sorts were smaller than half my pinky nail! Ginna Hensel, ESPRA’S copresident loved learning about the printing process.

E’ville Tech Center Hosts ‘Class to Careers Day’

The Ellicottville Career and Technical Education Center on April 18 hosted Class to Careers Day with tours for eighth grade students during school hours. Later in the afternoon, an open house was held for students, parents and businesses. A business reception was held in the evening.

Terry Fuller, workbased learning coordinator, works with the teachers, students and businesses setting up internships for students attending the tech center. He said a number of businesses were present in the classrooms during the student tours.

“Each one of the instructors contacted a business to come into their classroom and do a presentation to the class and the eight graders,” he said. “So, when the eighth graders toured, there were stations set up in each classroom with a quick interactive activity of some type. The businesses were also available to talk to the eighth graders as well as our students.”

Fuller said each eighth grade tour group had seven to eight students in it and they were allowed to spend 8 to 10 minutes in each class, where they could go and have a quick interaction and be able to ask questions of students, the teacher or the business before moving on to the next class. This gave them an overview of what each class is about.

According to Fuller, this was a new event for the Ellicottville center, but the Belmont center hosted a similar event in February and Olean held one in March.

He said it was the first time the parents, students and businesses have all come together for an event like this at Ellicottville.

Fuller said the Class to Careers event came about

when the Olean Career and Technical Education Center partnered with the Olean Chamber of Commerce this year and invited them to have their monthly meeting at the Olean center, where they had tours and an open house. He said the Ellicottville and Belmont centers piggybacked off of that idea.

“Through a faculty meeting, I had each one of the teachers select two businesses they wanted me to contact and invite to the Business After Hours Reception and the teachers contacted a business to come in during the day to be present in the classroom during the eighth grade tours,” he said.

Fuller said the goal was to coordinate getting businesses into the center to see what it has to offer. He said the business reception gave the businesses the opportunity to collaborate with not only the teachers and administration, but to also answer the questions of parents and students.

“This gives them the chance to take a look at what we have to offer, what the industries are looking for and to see we’re up to industry standard,” he said.

“Later, during the reception, we discussed the internship program and process, and the possible opportunities in our region.”

According to Fuller, the tech centers are doing their best to get out into the community and into the business community even more to promote the internships. They are expanding their connections with the business community to increase internship opportunities for the students, and it has been successful.

“We’ve gotten more kids out on internships this year than we’ve had in the past.

Hopefully, that will continue and be on the upswing,” he said.

Fuller said the internships benefit businesses as well.

It’s a “win-win” situation and that’s kind of how he markets it to the businesses when he presents it to them.

He said businesses have the opportunity to have a student come in and intern. If they like what they see and the student is learning, has the skills and the work ethic they’re looking for, then the business has a potential employee. The business is also gaining an intern or employee that has learned the latest technology and skills.

“The student gets to go to a business where they think they’re interested in that career and they see whether they really like it, or not,” he said. “That can help steer them toward whatever they’re doing college-wise or career-wise.”

Guidance Counselor Vince Oliverio said out of the center’s 10 component school districts, Ellicottville, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Randolph and Franklinville central schools participated.

He said a total of 200 eighth graders attended the event and had the opportunity to visit many of the classes offered at the center including Animal Science, Automotive Technology, Carpentry and Construction Trades, Collision Repair and Auto Body Technology, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts, Heavy Equipment Operations, Medical Assisting, Natural Resources, Power Equipment Technology, and Welding and Metal Fabrication. The center also offers a number of high-tech classes that can be seen in the course catalog.

ESPRA didn’t stop there, however. We decided to get down to the nittygritty, expose the roots of bookmaking…literally. We learned how to make real paper. Janna WilloughbyLoehr, the artist behind Papercraft Miracles, is WNYBAC’s papermaking instructor. She showed us that the art of papercraft was a simple, soothing pastime, and even let us put our hands directly into her pulp bucket. The sensation can only be described as touching a cloud. We mixed glitter, ferns, and old paper scraps into the pulp, then strained and placed our very own custom sheets of beautiful paper onto felt.

Willoughby-Loehr then brought our paper back to her studio to press and dry them. ESPRA will be receiving our handmade paper shortly in the mail.

ECS student Meganne Chapman was very taken with the papermaking experience. “The pulp was a weird soggy texture,” she said, “but the process of paper-making felt relaxing and therapeutic. I had such a fun time.”

Sophomore Megan Hartsell loved the whole trip. “When can we go back?” she asked.

Holly Richardson, the club’s advisor, was ecstatic with the success of the field trip.

“WNYBAC’s dedication to the preservation of the written word is admirable,” the Ellicottville English

teacher said. “Using a 1930s printing press and creating handmade paper are experiences that don’t happen in a typical classroom. Field trips like these are invaluable in the education of a well-rounded student.”

As we sat on the bus ride home, picking bits of dried pulp off our fingers and comparing souvenirs from the gift shop, Becky Nannen was thoughtful. “The love of books is not only about what is in them,” said the English teacher and avid bibliophile, “it’s about their history and physical qualities as well.

Today we were able to celebrate all three of these when we visited the Western New York Book Arts Center.” The WNYBAC experience is a trip ESPRA will never forget.

Bowen Makes Third Straight NYS Class D 1st Team

Ellicottville senior center Elliot Bowen made the Class D All-New York State first team for the third consecutive year, the New York State Sportswriters Association announced Monday.

This time, Bowen was joined on the first team by CCAA East II rival Sam Erickson, a senior forward at Franklinville.

Both Bowen and Erickson made the Times Herald’s Big 30 first team and Buffalo News’ All-Western New York third team in recent weeks. The 6-foot-6 Bowen averaged 19.7 points per game, 12.6 rebounds and 2.7 blocks and 6-foot-5 Erickson

averaged 22.5 points, 11.5 boards and 6.5 assists.

Also for Ellicottville, seniors Griffin Chudy (16.6 ppg) made the seventh team and Austin Grinols was an honorable mention. Chudy was also an All-WNY honorable mention.

The NYSSWA has yet to announce small school girls basketball all-state teams.

Franklinville sophomore Danielle Haskell (26.1 points per game) made the All-WNY first team.

Her sister, senior Allyson Haskell, made the third team.

COMMUNITY New Town/Village Engineer Presents Building Blocks for Organization

The Ellicottville Town Board opened with the approval of the March 2018 Minutes. There was a motion to approve; second and it was approved.

Audit of Claims: There was a motion to pay Town Bills on the Distribution Report #04-2018; a second and the motion was approved.

Supervisor’s Report: Town Supervisor Matt McAndrew attended the Cattaraugus County Supervisors Meeting. It was well attended and many new Supervisors were there. Regarding the Broadband work throughout the county, the majority of the work is going to Armstrong.

Windmill and Solar Farms were discussed and a few are interested. The County will be issuing the census for any municipalities that are not issuing their own. Ellicottville is not issuing their own. There has been no news on the Cattaraugus County Shared Services Agreement from the State. McAndrew will be attending the State Financial Meeting May 10 and 11 at Holiday Valley. The Downtown Revitalization Initiative Meetings were a great

success and the McAndrew thanked the public for the input. There were 80+ in attendance and over 800 responses from the survey.

This is a bigger turn out that some larger towns in Erie County.

There was a motion to accept the March 2018 Financial Report; a second and it was approved. Next there was a motion to approve the Annual Update Document - 2017 Year End; there was a second and it was approved.

Engineer’s Report: New Town/Village Engineer Niles Pierson presented his four phase organizational plan and his budget for the LGE Grant.

Phase 1: Observe and understand current processes and procedures along with roles of all employees within the municipality. Cultivate monthly town engineering meetings as to better facilitate communication.

Phase 2: The Foundation: Implement a better IT infrastructure which would allow for file sharing and better access of documents between necessary parties. Update the second floor of the Department of Public Works Building to serve as a work space for meetings and planning. Develop

new and enhance current processes and procedures.

Phase 3: Implementation: Implement new processes and procedures formulated in Phase 2. Finishing the inventory of assets project.

Phase 4: To Continuously Improve and Adapt: Explore shared services with other municipalities once the department is functioning as a good department.

There was a motion to accept the Department Organizational Plan and Budget for the LGE Grant Money; there was a second and it was approved.

One of the board members asked a question regarding the joining of the Town and Village Water System and if this is something that should be pursued. Engineer replied yes, this is something that is a good idea and would make day to day practices much more streamline for the employees. The Supervisor asked for a plan and timeline of a potential roll out of combining services and advised resources for him to use.

Next, there was an update on the GIS/GPS Locating Project; it is going well and they are almost done with the Village.

There is an inventory of signs being conducted as State regulations are changing requiring all street signage to be double reflective.

The Town sold an old police vehicle for $3,275.00 and a 2007 International Paystar Truck for $17,600.00 New Business: Town services have been given to the Nannen Arboretum to help dispose of fallen branches. There will be three public clean up days: Friday, April 27, Saturday, May 12, and Thursday, May 17; 9 a.m. - noon each of the days.

The Cemetery Mowing Bids were all in and it was awarded to D.J.’s Lawn Service & Snowplowing LLC. There was a motion to accept the bid; a second and it was accepted.

The Town Board asked the Town Planning Board for Zoning Amendments regarding Electronic Signs.

The final amendments were completed at the March 2018 meeting of the Planning Board and there was a motion to set the Public Hearing for the May 16 meeting at 6 p.m.;

The Town has been presented an opportunity to lock in gas rates for the next two years. This will include a shared services credit as well. There was a motion to accept this gas rate; a second and it was accepted.

There were two errors in the most recent water readings, this was due to an error in the calculation and not the physical readings of the meters. There was a motion to approve the credits; a second and they were approved.

Old Business: The Ellicottville/Great Valley Trail has recently had a couple of setbacks with owners of property the trail would cover. There is a meat raffle scheduled at the American Legion for the trail on June 10.

The next meeting of the Ellicottville Town Board will be May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Town/Village Hall.

National Day of Prayer is May 3

The National Day of Prayer, which mobilizes unified public prayer for America, will be observed on May 3.

In the Cattaraugus and Little Valley area, there will be open times of prayer at Victory Tabernacle, 254 S. Main St. in Cattaraugus. Representatives from area churches will be leading prayer starting at 11 a.m. when officials will be praying for students.

Each hour there will be different theme from our nation and communities to health and prayer requests. Closing will be at 4 p.m. Prayer requests are acceptable.

Organizers invite all area residents to join and stay as long as they are able.

Why Weight Loss is So Much More Than Fitness & Food 1

Stop berating yourself. We all beat ourselves up from time to time. Whether it’s comparing yourself unfairly to someone else, blaming yourself for something you cannot control or just taking yourself too seriously, even the most confident of us fall off the loving-yourself wagon occasionally. But loving yourself as you are right now is essential to getting out of your own way.

Find the right reason to lose weight. Sure, we all want to look good and fit in a certain pant size, but losing weight just for vanity’s sake leaves your resolve less than strong. Making change is hard, but connecting to the deeper, life-changing reasons why you want to lose the weight—more energy, better focus, ease of movement, improved health—is a far greater way to motivate yourself when the going gets tough.

Focus on the positive. We think “diet” is a four-letter word because, to us, it’s all about what you can’t have. So instead of focusing on the deprivation, swap your thinking to all of the fabulous things you can enjoy. Living a healthy life is about eating delicious and fresh foods that fuel your body and moving your body in a way that you love every day. What’s not to love about that? Life is good—savor it.

When it comes to rebelling, you probably think of 16-year-olds or people covered in lots of tattoos who like to swear a lot. But over the last few years, I’ve learned that most of us don’t rebel against others as much as we rebel against ourselves.

Think about it: how many times have you set out to accomplish a goal or task only to find yourself procrastinating or flatout sabotaging your own efforts? Started a weightloss plan on a Monday and are eating directly out of the ice-cream tub by Wednesday? Vowed to go to the gym every morning this week only to find yourself oversleeping?

I see so many people who struggle with this day after day that I wanted to share just a few tips for better understanding—and overcoming—this selfdefeating weight-loss barrier.

Get honest with yourself. If you find yourself emotional eating or self-sabotaging, take a deep breathe and ask, “Whom am I really rebelling against?” Many times we choose unhealthy behaviors (almost unconsciously) in defiance of husbands, friends, family or co-workers in an attempt to gain control or have power. Or we are rebelling against ourselves because, deep down, we don’t feel like we’re worthy of the positive changes we’ve set forth to make. These issues could be left over from childhood or may show a lack of confidence in ourselves or an inability to emotionally express ourselves. No matter the reason, do some soul-searching to see what’s affecting you.

Awareness—and loving understanding—is the only way to overcome it.

Don’t treat it like a fairy tale. When it comes to being healthy, there is no “happily ever after.” Living a healthy life is a balance, and it’s about consistency over time— every day for the rest of your life. So don’t think of your weight-loss plan as something that ends on a certain day or at a certain goal. Instead, view it as a journey where you get to keep learning, growing and changing!

Women in the Outdoors June 9 On Saturday, June 9, experience the great outdoors with Women in the Outdoors, presented by Springville Strutters Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

These events are held across the country using experts and trained professionals to teach outdoor skills to women and girls over 12 years of age in a non-competitive environment.

This will be the 19th year the event has been held, and this year’s courses include some new offerings, such as Canoeing and Camping, Owl Painted Tote Bag and Food Prep and Fire. Other courses include Tomahawk Throwing, Let’s Talk Turkey, Archery, Emergency Prep, Walk in the Woods and Self Defense. Registration is required, and the $65 fee includes all equipment use, course instruction (four classes), continental breakfast, hot buffet lunch, great t-shirt, NWTF membership and a one year magazine subscription.

This is a great opportunity to learn something new with friends and family, and is geared toward females ages 12-100.

“Each individual helps the others succeed,” Estelle Greene, one of the event organizers, said of the attendees.

Women’s Day Retreat June 16 On Saturday, June 16, enjoy the Women’s Day Retreat, organized by Jessica Raymond, owner of rSpace yoga studio

There is a range of ticket prices depending on the experience you are looking to achieve. There are a limited amount of VIP tickets for $100 being sold, which include all day access to classes, a morning mimosa, a swag bag filled with goodies, lunch and cocktail, first sign up for SUP yoga, and two holistic healing services for free. Ploetz also noted the district has been assigned to take the Global Geography and History Transition Regents Field Test, as well as the computer-based Grade 8 ELA Field Test, and the Geometry Field Test, consisting of practice questions for future testing.

Also coming up are the Standard 3-8 State Math Assessments, the Grade 4 and 8 Science Performance and Written Tests, and the Regents Exams.

David Halloran Turkey Calls Just in Time for the Spring Hunt

Chances are you’ve met many people with the names Jake, Jenny and Tom –but have you ever met a turkey? Yes, a jake, jenny and tom are all different categories of turkey. Jakes and jennies are young male and female turkeys, and a tom is a mature male turkey.

According to the National Wild Turkey Federation, today, there are roughly 6 million of these wild birds in the United States, but research shows that the turkey population has dropped by 700,000 in the last five years due to suboptimal habitat and over population.

Hunters and conservation organizations work tirelessly each year to maintain the health and population of this species. David Halloran, Ellicottville-native and sportsman, founded David Halloran Turkey Calls to aid in the sanctioned harvesting of wild turkeys.

He makes box calls, pot calls, mouth calls and crow calls by the thousands each year in his shop based locally in Ellicottville.

However, he said it all began at the age of 12.

“There was a neighbor up the road that dropped me off a turkey hunting magazine and actually took me for my first turkey hunt,” Halloran said. “He gave me a turkey call and I said, ‘Oh, you know, I can do that’. I was always crafty as a kid and we had a shop at the house so it just kept going after that.”

By the time he was in high school, Halloran was selling turkey calls nationally and receiving national acclaim. He won the Best of Show Pot Call for his crystal pot call at the 2005 Midwest Call Competition, and at the 2008 National Wild Turkey Federation Grand National Competition –which holds

55,000 people –he won first place in the slate call division.

In 2011, Halloran won the DD Adams award for best sounding pot call in the nation with his Crystal Mistress call. Recently, he was even featured in a Field & Stream magazine article titled The Best New Turkey Hunting Gear for 2018 for his new Ebony and Walnut Checkered Box call.

As his business grows, he has also received offers from outdoor stores such as Cabela’s and Bass Pro, which until this point have not been accepted.

“I don’t dare get into too many big box stores, because even if I’m making them all, the perception is that I’m not,” Halloran said.

Each call is made out of various types of wood to both produce the best sound and nicest design.

He uses a lot of local cedar wood, as well as exotic wood from South America, Africa and Indonesia.

Purple heart, as the name suggests, has a beautiful purple color, ebony wood is a rich black and blood wood from South America is a deep red color.

Since each type of wood makes a different sound, Halloran laughed that there was a lot of trial and error and many duds before he got the desired sound for each call. Turkeys make many vocalizations –such as a purr, cluck, yelp and gobble –so each David Halloran Turkey Call is designed to produce a large number of these noises.

Some calls are struck by hand, some are blown into and others are manipulated by hand. Halloran said they’re like an instrument that hunters need to learn.

He noted that nearly 80 percent of his clientele is from South Carolina to Florida and out to Mississippi and Alabama, while only 2 percent or so

is from New York.

“Turkey hunting down south is like religion. Up here people turkey hunt but it’s not as serious,” an Halloran said.

He said he’s been fortunate enough to make connections with southern congressmen such as Austin Scott of Georgia and representatives from Florida and Alabama. He said he recently made 75 calls for Representative Scott and Representative Palmer (AL) branded with their name and the US House of Representatives seal.

Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful flowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.

Nutrition Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can benefit from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed.

Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply.

Arbor Day Celebration is April 27 at Nannen Arboretum

The Nannen Arboretum is inviting the public to its Arbor Day celebration at 11 a.m. Friday, April 27 in the town center building.

Town of Ellicottville Supervisor Matt McAndrew and the Village of Ellicottville Mayor John Burrell will make a proclamation declaring April 27 as Arbor Day in Ellicottville. An American larch tree, larix laricina, also known as Tamarack, will be planted by the Nannen Arboretum Society and the Tree City USA flag will be raised. Guests will also hear from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) representative Dave Paradowski regarding diseases and pests of trees.

Refreshments will be available.

Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree

planting and care. The idea for Arbor Day in the United States originated in Nebraska City, Neb. J. Sterling Morton and his wife, Caroline, were lovers of nature and the home they established in Nebraska was quickly planted with trees, shrubs and flowers.

In 1872, the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture accepted a resolution by Morton to “set aside one day to plant trees, both forest and fruit.” The Board declared April 10, 1872, Arbor Day offering prizes to the counties and individuals that properly planted the largest number of trees on that day. More than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. J. Sterling Morton became known as the “Founder of Arbor Day.” Shortly after this 1872 observance, other states passed legislation to observe Arbor Day each year with appropriate ceremonies. New York

State celebrates Arbor Day on the last Friday in April, the 27th this year. Planting trees is an act of kindness and optimism. The trees we plant clean the air, beautify our neighborhoods, provide homes for wildlife, conserve energy and topsoil, and help keep the atmosphere in balance.

Life is just better when we live among the trees.

The Nannen Arboretum Society is a not-forprofit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing home garden and natural resource education and an opportunity for nature appreciation and leisure.
