Look Back On The HV Season

It’s been a banner ski season for Holiday Valley. Not only did they celebrate their 60th anniversary, but guests also enjoyed 127 days of skiing and snowboarding, with 210 inches of natural snowfall. The resort opened to skiers and riders on Nov. 26 and the last runs were taken on April 14. (While the resort was originally scheduled to close on April 8, HV remained open for a “bonus weekend” April 13 and 14.) Celebrate Earth Day By Mary Heyl

It may be difficult to imagine a time before “going green” was a ubiquitous concept, but not even 50 years ago, the modern environmental movement hardly existed. However, on April 22, 1970, a nation-wide movement to promote and protect the environment finally made headlines around the world, as 20 million Americans took part in marches, rallies and protests fighting for a healthy, sustainable environment. Today, we recognize this monumental movement as Earth Day: each year on April 22, Americans recognize the importance of creating a

sustainable environment and the role we can play in protecting it—or harming it. 1970 was an important year in an era of protest and social change. From anti-war rallies, to the Civil Rights movement, to women’s liberation, millions of American were taking to the streets, college campuses, churches and more to refute the status quo. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, felt similarly called to defend the environment, as the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California devastated area wildlife and marine life, killing thousands of birds, dolphins,

Hot Start for ECS Softball

By Sam Wilson

Coach Matt Finn said it’s a young team, but that hasn’t stopped Ellicottville softball from a strong start to the season with a 3-1 record through the first week of games. The Eagles return four starters — senior shortstop Evie Cortez, senior first baseman Sarah Sheffield, junior second baseman Linnea Jimerson and sophomore pitcher Allison Przywara — but Finn said the team’s five new starters are off Ellicottville’s Evelyn Cortez scores to a solid start. during a softball game at Salamanca “We’re actually not doing last season.
