Whether it’s in like a lion and out like a lamb, or the opposite of that, March in Ellicottville is chock full of activities for everyone. Fast-paced, familyfriendly, laughter-inducing or just plain fun, enjoy it all as ski season winds down and we welcome spring. On Friday, March 3, experience teleskiing at HoliMont’s Free Heel Fling, where $49 gets participants a lift ticket, tele coaching and a chance to win a pair of bindings. For more info, visit www.holimont.com. Saturday, March 4 is the annual Phoenix Rise to the Challenge Race at HoliMont. This popular race features participants in HoliMont’s Phoenix Adaptive program, as well as competitors from all over WNY, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Canada and beyond. See the article beginning on this page. Scouts can enjoy a day on the slopes with their scouting group during Holiday Valley’s Scout Days, March 4-5. Special pricing offers an 8-hour lift ticket for $31, lift and lesson $35, lift lesson and rental $45. Helmet rental $6. Head to Holiday Valley March 11-12 for the biggest family-friendly party of the season. It’s Winter Carnival time— get ready to have some fun! Winter Carnival is held in conjunction with the village’s Mardi Gras weekend, and what Mardi Gras celebration is complete without a parade or two? On Saturday, don’t miss the annual Mardi Gras parade through the streets of Ellicottville. On Sunday, sport your favorite costume and head down Holiday Valley’s Mardi Gras slope for the costume parade, beginning at noon. Don’t be shy—costume judging takes place at the bottom and the winner gets a season’s pass for next year! Following the costume parade, visitors can head to Yodeler for the Dummy Downhill, where people’s homemade dummies will take a ride down the hill and hopefully stay intact. Hungry? Enjoy the Safety Patrol Cookout at the base of Yodeler, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both

Get ready for this weekend’s Phoenix Rise to the Challenge Race at HoliMont! For many, the highlight of the adaptive ski season is this race, happening on Saturday, March 4. Racers come from near and

far to attend—and what started out as a club race now pulls in racers from not only HoliMont, but also from other local ski resorts, as well as neighboring states and Canada. Outside of the Special Olympics, there aren’t a lot of adaptive ski races in the area or

Holiday Valley held the annual Kandahar Festival for U14/U12/U10 athletes, and over 180 athletes gathered for this regional race. From this, athletes can move on to qualify for Kandahar Championships to be held at Gore Mountain in North Creek, NY. HoliMont’s Cameron Johnson took gold on day

one in the Kombi event. Erik Shattenberg of Holiday Valley walked away in the top spot on day two’s Giant Slalom. U10 athletes can qualify for Champs if they finish in the top 15 overall on two runs.
