SGCEF Donates $15,000 to SMART Moves
By Alicia Dziak
The Springville-Griffith Community Education Foundation (SGCEF) recently presented the Boys & Girls Club of Springville with a $15,000 donation to help launch its SMART Moves program. These funds were raised at a wine tasting event in November 2016. The SMART (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) Moves program is a nationally acclaimed prevention program that teaches young people ages 6 to 15 to say no to drugs by involving them in discussion and role-playing, practicing resistance and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills and analyzing media and peer influence. The ultimate goal is to promote abstinence from substance abuse through
the practice of responsible behavior. “After speaking with local families and listening to the concerns they shared about the rise of drug-use in our community, we felt the Boys and Girls Club would be the perfect place to provide a quality, interactive program that would help prepare our area youth to make quality decisions regarding their health,” said Andy Bobseine, director of the Boys and Girls Club of Springville. The SMART Moves program will be offered to club members as part of their standard membership fee. The program will be divided into three age groups: SMART kids (ages 6-9), Start SMART (ages 10-12) and Stay SMART (ages 13-15). each group will engage in age appropriate

allow the club to purchase and install eight new computes with editing software, as well as a projector for presentations. The remaining grant money will be used for staffing, training, materials and community outreach. This program is only one part of the solution to the local drug problem. The Boys and Girls Club has joined the Springville Area Coalition Substance Abuse Task Force to ensure that the program will not duplicate, but rather enhance, support and expand upon existing community efforts. According to Bobseine, “The SMART Moves program will be implemented at the Boys & Girls Club this upcoming fall. The game plan is to take a nationally recognized program and localize it to meet the needs of our area youth. Members of the Boys & Girls Club will be involved in the program and we hope to have the school district involved to ensure that we are serving those who would benefit most from the program.” If you’re interested in supporting SGCEF and the Boys & Girls Club of Springville SMART Moves program through a sponsorship or donation, call (716) 5929337, email support@sgfound. org or go to www.sgfound.org for more information.
