New Home for The Barbershop Soli Deo Gloria
St. Aloysius Parish By Derek M. Otto
By Alicia Dziak
Do you or the man in your life need a good old fashioned hair cut from one of the best in the business? A visit with Springville’s own JP Nabozny will not disappoint. Nabozny opened his shop, The Barbershop Soli Deo Gloria, in the 56 East Main Street building in September 2013. While he wasn’t actively looking to move, he said that a customer suggested he look into the former Root 39 Salon building, located just up the road at 271 West Main Street. Nabozny reached out to the building’s owner, Angie Shaver, and they were able to come up with a rental agreement. Since the building was formerly a salon, much of the “shell” remained the same. The layout was already open, but Nabozny had a friend construct two new barber stations (which means he’ll soon be looking to hire a second barber!) and a reception desk where he will cash out customers. He added fresh paint and put his own twist on the space by adding his sports memorabilia and TVs. “I wanted it to look like a man cave and not like a salon,” Nabozny added. The barbershop will also feature a coffee bar area

The parish also owns the former Tanner house on Main Street that was used initially as a parsonage. Today it is home to the sisters that served the Parish and St. Aloysius.
This week, we are discussing whether or not the groundhog saw his shadow. I find it interesting that the roots of our animal prediction are something that was brought here by our German ancestors. Believe it or not, the groundhog tradition started with the Candlemas services held on Feb. 2. Parish priests would bless the candles used for the rest of winter. It also marked the period when hedgehogs in Germany would be leaving their dens in the midwinter. An old German poem says: For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day, so far will the snow swirl until May, for as the snow blows on Candlemas Day, so far will sunshine before May. It didn’t take much to combine the two and if the hedgehog saw its shadow, the last six weeks of winter would be determined. In the early days of the republic, most of the German population was centered in Pennsylvania. The woodchuck would replace the hedgehog in See A Look Back page 7
