ANF staff hosts ‘state of the forest’ meeting
By BRIAN FERRY
Allegheny National Forest leaders had a lot of positives to focus on at the first State of the Forest meeting on Friday. In the past fiscal year, the ANF exceeded its timber harvest target. There were 93 new wells developed and 48 orphan wells plugged. Ash trees destined to die from emerald ash borer infestation were cut at a high rate. Strides were made to help improve the age of the forest. The ANF completes environmental assessments much faster than the national and Eastern Region averages. The Clarion River was named the Pennsylvania River of the Year. The new Chief of the Forest Service made the Allegheny her first national forest visit. To share successes and accomplishments, explain challenges and opportunities, talk about partnerships, and generally give the public a feel for what the ANF is up to, the Forest Leadership Team held its inaugural State of the Forest meeting OCT. 25 at the forest headquarters in Warren. The Forest Leadership Team includes Deputy Forest Supervisor Christopher Cook, Marienville District Ranger Rob Fallon, Bradford District Ranger Rich Hatfield,

according to Warner. “We try to balance shortand long-term needs of people and nature,” Cook said. “We want to connect people with the land.” The harvest target was 42 million board feet. Despite challenges including a one-
month government shutdown, the actual harvest was 46 MBF, Cook said. “We not only met our fiscal year 2019 goals, we exceeded them,” Cook said. “That’s a testament to our staff. We look forward to another good year.

Of that harvest, a little less than half — 46 percent — was “sawtimber” — timber of an appropriate size and quality for use as lumber. Seyler said the relatively low level of oil and gas development was based on economic factors and gave the ANF the opportunity to focus on “building and strengthening relationships with the oil and gas industry, state regulators, and stakeholders.” He gave the example of an orphan well discovered by a hunter that was discharging oil onto the land and into a stream. The hunter approached an oil and gas developer, who then came to the ANF. “We worked collaboratively,” Seyler said. “That oil is no longer coming out. It has been cleaned up through biomediation.” The exact number and location of those kinds of wells is unknown. “We will continue to chip away and build on these successes,” he said. The ANF has been able to move significant projects through the environmental assessments process much faster than the regional and national averages, Hille said. The national average was 25 months. The average for the eastern region was 22
