Veterans Day is Nov. 11

By Daniel Meyer

Observed annually on Nov. 11, Veterans Day is the single day of remembrance that recognizes the official signing of the armistice, which ended World War I. Military veterans are publicly honored for their service to their country on Veterans Day in a wide variety of ways, including parades, religious services and other community-wide ceremonies that honor the men and women who have served their nation in some capacity. Though World War I ended in 1918, Congress recognized the end of the battle in 1926 by declaring that the anniversary of the armistice should be

commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. Nov. 11 was later approved as a legal holiday in 1938, and was first known as Armistice Day to honor all veterans who served during World War I. Following

the mobilization of service members to represent the United States in World War II, in 1954 the name of the holiday was officially changed to Veterans Day.

Bob McCarthy’s Legacy Lives On Rotary to Host Irish Christmas Dec. 2 By Jann Wiswall

Most people who know Ellicottville are lucky enough to have known its favorite Irishman and unofficial ambassador, Bob McCarthy. McCarthy passed away unexpectedly last spring, leaving a hole in many hearts. But he also left a legacy of selfless generosity that the community is determined to keep alive. One of the best known of those legacies is the annual Irish Christmas event, which raises funds and collects toys and gifts to make the holidays special for needy families in the community. And the Rotary Club of Ellicottville has taken hold of the 17th annual event this year in McCarthy’s honor.

ECS Playoff Update By Indrek Kongats

Last week, Ellicottville Central School teams began their playoffs for fall sports. The varsity football, boys and girls soccer and girls volleyball teams all had their first round of playoff games this past weekend. Both boys and girls soccer lost their first round games by a score of 0-1. The boys played at Sweet Home against Pine Valley; the girls played at Dunkirk against North Collins in an exciting game. Robin Freaney, goalie for ECS, had four amazing saves before the fifth one slipped by her. That was the only goal either team scored. ECS had four good shots on goal as well, ending up 11-6-1 for the year. In football action, the third-seed Ellicottville-Franklinville Titans upset second-seed Silver Creek-Forestville by a score of 56-33. Earlier in October, Silver Creek had defeated the Titans by one point, 27-26, so this victory was especially sweet. The 7-2 Titans will now meet the 9-0 Maple Grove Red Dragons, the number one seed who shutout Randolph See ECS Playoff Update page 4

Breton, Nelson Battle for County Legislator Seat

By Christopher Gordon

The next President of the United States is not the only political race that will be decided on election day, as a number of local and state races will be decided on Tuesday, Nov. 8 as well. One of the key races will

be for the Cattaraugus County Legislature, as Robert J. Breton will look to fend off a challenge from John Nelson III for the District 3 seat, which holds a three-year term. Breton, who will be on the Republican, Independence and Reform Party lines will look to

retain the seat he was appointed to in May following the death of William Weller Sr. Nelson’s name will appear on the Democratic and Conservative Party lines. Also, Rep. Thomas W. Reed See Local Elections page 6
