Village Board Addresses Unsafe Property

By Jennifer Weber

The Village of Springville Board of Trustees met on Monday, Nov. 21, opening with a public hearing pursuant to Local Law 2016-6, Chapter 77 regarding the unsafe building located at 110 South Central Avenue. Chapter 77 requires a legal proceeding on whether a structure should be demolished in the interest in public safety, to come before the Village Board in a public hearing instead of the New York State Supreme Court. A property owner who doesn’t agree with the decision of Village Board can then take the issue to New York State Supreme Court. The owner of 110 South Central Avenue has been notified the property is in violation of the code, and the bank that owns the mortgage sent the Village a letter saying they are not interested in the property. Building inspectors found the foundation caving in and dangerous, making

the structure unstable. The structural engineer report stated that “because of the extensive damage to the foundation, possibly the structure wouldn’t stay sound and safe through the year.” In April 2016, there was a police report of trespassing on the premises. The Board expressed concern over what

could happen if the property collapsed on someone who might be inside. No one with ownership interest in 110 South Central was present at the public meeting. The owner has not responded to anything in over three years, and has moved out of town to Orchard Park. Taxes See Village Board page 5

Ever since Edgars department dtore in Boston, MA began having a “Santa’s Helper” appear in the weeks between Thanksgiving and

Christmas in the 1890s, many communities have noticed that the jolly elf appears in their communities too. The Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving, most children would begin

that blessed period of “good behavior.” Springville is not alone in having one of “Santa’s Helpers” check in during the days before Christmas Eve; however, he has chosen a variety of ways to do it. Santa has been very fond of fire trucks. In the Early 1950s to the 1980s, Santa could be seen in East Concord at the Fire Hall, arriving by fire truck. For many years, this was the place to sit on Santa’s lap, as the East Concord Fire Department put on their Annual Christmas Party. In the late 1960s, snowmobiling was becoming a very popular sport in western New York. Each

Get Your Skis Ready for the Slopes

Holland Swims Her Way to States Submitted by Coach Karen Reynolds

Elle Holland has been the talk of the swim season, with her six pool and school records, and a member of the 400 relay pool record. If you came to watch her during the dual season, you know what I am talking about. Her ability to make swimming look so effortless is hypnotizing. She cruises through the water quickly and smoothly. She trains yearround with Orchard Park’s See Holland at States page 4

With the fresh snow and dropping temperatures, it looks like ski season is here and the slopes at Kissing Bridge will be welcoming skiers from Buffalo to Springville. For up to the minute slope updates, visit the Kissing Bridge Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ kissingbridge. The exact and highly-

anticipated opening date is not known, but the rumor has it that the snowguns started blasting last Sunday night. If you have not already done so, it’s time to get out all of your ski clothing and equipment, making sure everything still fits, especially for the ever-growing kids, and checking that all of your families’ bindings function

properly. The biggest disappointment for many when they are about to hit the slopes is that the boots they just bought at the ski swap don’t fit into the bindings of their existing skis. Another huge disappointment is that their skis stick to the snow or that the skis are not holding an edge on icy slopes. See Ski Tuning page 5
