Gobble for Groceries Thanksgiving Day By Alicia Dziak
For many people, Thanksgiving includes a feast of carved turkey and all the fixings—a table filled to the brim with buttery mashed potatoes, seasoned stuffing, cheesy casseroles, pumpkin pie and more. But not everyone has the luxury of an over-thetop dinner on this day or many other days during the year, and many people turn to local food pantries to source their meals. In Springville, this place is the Trading Post, located at 38 Franklin Street, which provides numerous food items to local families in need, as well as a kitchen that serves meals. The Trading Post provides meals or food items to over 40,000 people a year, and stocking its shelves is an ongoing priority. One way to help with this initiative is the Gobble for Groceries, a 5K and fun walk that happens Thanksgiving morning. “Gobble for Groceries is a great way to start

Thanksgiving,” said Christine Greene, who chairs the event with Rick Manzone and Joe Wolniewicz. “You’re in and out by 10 a.m.” The event began because a group of local runners who regularly attended Buffalo’s busy Turkey Trot, suggested doing something local that benefited Springville. Gobble for Groceries was born, starting
with only about 25 runners that first year, and has grown to include about 250 participants. Instead of a traditional race entry fee, event organizers ask for a monetary donation for the Trading Post. “With every dollar we get, we can buy $7 of food,” explained Greene. SGCEF Fundraiser to Benefit SGI Technology Program
By Jennifer Weber
The Springville-Griffith Community Education Foundation (SGCEF) Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 6-8 p.m. at the Springville Health and Fitness Club located at 243 West Main Street in Springville. This year’s major grant recipient is the SGI Technology and Engineering Program in support of their purchase of a specialized CNC laser, which will be used across the technology, art and business curriculum at the school. The CNC laser is an extremely versatile tool which can cut or engrave on materials such as wood, acrylic, fabric, glass, cardboard, ceramic and anodized aluminum, allowing students to make professional projects,
prototypes and templates and create work at a higher level. SGI Technology teacher Jonathan Shelley said, “Here in Springville we are in desperate need of some new equipment that will allow our students
to perform at new levels. The CNC laser is that tool; it’s quick and easy and very affordable to run.” Shelly continued, “We are striving to develop classes and curriculum that will allow students to thrive in our technical world, as well as help to develop a creative passionate learner. It also an amazing motivator for students to create things they never thought they could.” The CNC laser will be unveiled at Saturday’s event, with Shelley providing live laser demonstrations engraving glass mugs. The SGCEF is dedicated to enhancing and expanding opportunities for students and their communities served by the school district and serves as an advocate for promoting and fostering collaborations. “Over the past 10 years, the See SGCEF Fundraiser page 2
