November at Holiday Valley This time of year is all about festive events and the anticipation of the holiday and ski seasons. This weekend, the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC) will once again assemble the region’s talented fine artists and artisans for the Winter Arts Festival on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Valley Main Lodge. Visitors will find original handmade gifts for their holiday shopping list from among the many booths displaying paintings, prints, photographs, pottery, jewelry, baskets, wood carving and fiber arts. In addition to giving your friends and family one-of-a-kind gifts, you’ll be supporting local artists and artisans. Don’t miss out on your chance to find unique holiday gifts for everyone on your list! See page 9 for more info. If you’d rather spend your time in the lodge fastening up your ski boots or sipping on hot chocolate between runs, your wait is almost over. Holiday Valley’s tentative opening day is scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 24. With the dropping temps, snowmaking began late last week and it’s beginning to look a lot like ski and snowboard season! Get ready to hit the slopes and enjoy endless winter fun and over $3 million in improvements, including an automated snowmaking system, a Magic Carpet lift in the beginner’s area, new trails, and an all-new Cindy’s Warming Hut and Mistletoe Lean To. Check out www.holidayvalley. com for the latest updates and snow reports.

Kick off the Holiday Season at Christmas in Ellicottville One of the best ways to describe the downtown of Ellicottville has been as something Norman Rockwell would have conjured up. The New York Times says it is like being “transported to a scene from an old black and white Christmas movie.” As we start thinking of the Jolly Old Elf himself, why not come down to see what the fuss is all about during the annual Christmas in Ellicottville weekend? The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce brings you a
weekend full of holiday primer events to get even the most Grinchy heart growing. From noon on Friday, Nov. 24 to the last horse-drawn carriage ride on Sunday, the weekend is sure to have kids of all ages in the holiday spirit. “Christmas is a time we all look forward to,” Barb Pump, Events Manager for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, said. “We get to spend time with our families and savor each and every memory that we create. Gado Gado Celebrates 20 Years in EVL By Alicia Dziak
First opened in 1997 by Ellicottville native and ECS graduate Suzanne Roberts, Gado Gado has become a staple in the community. Over the years, Ellicottville has changed, the store has changed, and Roberts moved hundreds of miles away to Chicago, but one thing has remained the same— Gado Gado still offers a unique selection of items you can’t find just anywhere. Since 1997, Roberts has seen Ellicottville evolve. “As a destination point, it seems to get busier every year,” she said of her hometown. “Years ago, there was a very definitive slow See Gado Gado page 4

New Village/Town Engineer Appointed
By Caitlin Croft
After months of hard work and consideration between the Village Board (VB) and Town Board, Niles Pierson has been appointed the new Village/ Town Engineer. In Good News, the Sales Tax Distribution of $97,555.50 was received. The Village Planner Report consisted of proposed changes to the 2012 Zoning Code. The Village Planning Board has
been asked to recommend if this version meets the intent of the amendments they recommended to the VB in 2016. The VB has requested the Village Planning Board go ahead and review. In the Engineer’s Report regarding the Lagoon Sludge Removal Project, there is the recommendation to bid out the project in early 2018 to receive competitive pricing. The project/plan schematic will be
