Opening Day Nov. 18 By Hannes Dziak
Well, it’s that time of year. Alarm goes of at 4:15 a.m.— not that it matters because you were awake all night with heavy anticipation of what the morning might bring. Nope, I’m not referring to Christmas, but to the other “holiday” that many western New Yorkers can’t wait for—opening day of regular season for big game. This Saturday, Nov. 18 marks the start of gun season for deer. Many hunters plan for this day all year, whether it’s planting food plots, setting up cameras to follow deer activity, staying sharp with your aim with target practice, or putting up tree stands and ground blinds. This time of year is much more than just hiding out in the woods for this hunter; it’s about camaraderie. Every hunter has their own tradition. For me, my two friends leave the city life

and move in with my family for the weekend. We stay up late talking about all the deer that will be hanging out by us, have a big breakfast, and head out to our spots before sunrise. There is just something about sitting deep in the woods before the sun comes up. Everything is still, except for maybe an owl saying goodnight to his friend or a coyote signing off for the night. As soon as it’s
light, that’s when the buck of a lifetime shows his head— well, not really, but that’s the thought that keeps us coming back, just like that one good hole of golf that makes you think, “Yeah, I could be good at this game if I played more.” Many days, no deer will be seen; that doesn’t mean the day was a waste though. In my days of sitting in tree stands, I’ve seen beavers,

Gobble for Groceries This Thanksgiving
By Alicia Dziak
Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for everything you have, and also a time to give back to those who might not have as much. In Springville, a great way to give back on Thanksgiving morning is Gobble for Groceries, a 5K and fun walk to benefit the Trading Post. Located at 38 Franklin Street in Springville, the Trading Post provides meals or food items to over 40,000 people a year. Gobble for Groceries helps the cause by asking for monetary donations to support the food pantry instead of a traditional race entry fee. “With every dollar we get, we can buy $7 of food,” explained Christine Greene, who chairs the event with Rick Manzone and Joe Wolniewicz.

Holland Heading to State Meet in Ithaca By Alicia Dziak and Karen Reynolds
This week, Elle Holland, a junior at SGI on the Varsity Girls Swim team, will be attending the New York State Swimming and Diving meet held at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. She will be leaving Thursday morning and competing Friday and Saturday . This is Elle’s second year attending the NYS Meet and she is excited about returning back this season as a stronger and more confident swimmer. She qualified in three individual events; however, she can only swim in two because of the rules in swimming. She has chosen to swim in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke events. Going into the preliminaries, Elle is ranked 59/64 in backstroke and ranked 36/69 in See Holland at States page 4

Spc. Baker’s Name Nominated for New Bridge Over Catt. Creek By Rich Place
Last week, the Concord Town Board nominated Spc. Brian K. Baker, a Springville native who died in 2004 while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom, to be honored by naming the new bridge over the Cattaraugus Creek in his memory. The town board, during its Nov. 9 meeting, unanimously approved the nomination, which is part of Assemblyman David DiPietro’s Commemorate Our Hometown Heroes Bridge and Road Name Program. Concord Town Supervisor Gary Eppolito said the nomination is no guarantee the name will be approved, but said the nomination “is a great thing” and “appropriate.” The information will be sent on to DiPeitro’s office. The new South CascadeMiller Road Bridge over the Cattaraugus Creek, which
carries old Route 219 over the gorge, opened to traffic in May. The new twin Route 219 bridges to the east were named earlier this year in memory of former Cattaraugus County Legislator Gerard “Jess” Fitzpatrick. Baker was 27 years old when he was killed in an explosion in Baghdad, according to a report from the Associated Press. He was assigned to the
