Smethport Alliance Church Wearing masks required builds community cupboard by state; McKean County for those in need of food sees more cases of COVID-19

By CHRISTINE HOLTZ

When Pastor Robert Grimes moved to Smethport in April from Lock Haven, he wanted to find a way the Smethport Alliance Church could better serve those in need. That’s when he and his wife, Esther, decided to build a “community cupboard” to place in front of the church as an additional supplement for those who may be in need of food. Grimes said the idea came from a church that was doing something similar back in Lock Haven. “We’re just a small church so there’s not a lot of things we can do right now, though we wanted to do something that would reach out to the community,” he explained. Grimes constructed and installed the box out in front of the church, while his friend crafted a wooden sign for it which reads “Those who are hungry, take. Those in abundance, give.”

Pastor Robert Grimes of the Smethport Alliance Church stands in front of the new “community cupboard” he built and installed outside of the church on Pine Street. The cupboard was built to supply those in need with an extra source of non-perishable goods.

He said the church will be stocking the cupboard with non-perishable goods and hopes community members who have the means will help as well. “It’s all free food,” Grimes said. “The community is welcome to

take what they need and we hope members of the community will help us keep it stocked.” As of this weekend, the cupboard has been installed in front of the church, located at 202 Pine St., and is now ready for use.

The Pennsylvania health secretary has expanded the mask-wearing order to require masks be worn whenever anyone leaves their home. “This mask-wearing order is essential to stopping the recent increase in COVID-19 cases we have seen in Pennsylvania,” Gov. Tom Wolf said. “Those hot spots can be traced to situations where Pennsylvanians were not wearing masks or practicing social distancing — two practices that must be adhered to if we want to maintain the freedoms we have in place under our reopening.” While the local region hasn’t seen the huge numbers of cases that other counties have, the case count has risen lately. As of last week, McKean and Potter coun-

ties each had additional casees of COVID-19. The total case count for McKean County was 18, with 10 positive and 8 probable cases. The Potter County case count was 16, with 12 positive and four probable cases. Elk County’s case count remained at 15, and Cameron County’s at 3. According to the health department’s Wednesday figures, there were 636 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 87,242. Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine signed the order under the Disease Prevention and Control Act, mandating masks must be worn whenever anyone leaves home. “Person-to-person spread does continue however, and with the reopening, the Commonwealth is beginning to see increases in new cases,” Levine wrote in

the order. She further explained that action must be taken to slo.w the increase, and to avoid mitigation strategies like the ones that shut down the state. The order outlines the situations when a mask must be worn and includes limited exceptions to the face-covering requirement. More and more health experts have called for mask wearing, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who said during a June 30 Senate hearing on COVID-19, “Americans who don’t wear masks may ‘propagate the further spread of infection.’” The mask-wearing order will be sent to state and local officials, law enforcement and others tasked with education about the order for those not in compliance.
