Local schools to share about $2 million in CARES Act funds By MARCIE SCHELLHAMMER
Pennsylvania has been awarded $523.8 million in one-time federal emergency funds to help schools respond to COVID-19 impacts. That includes more than $2 million to be split among the five districts in McKean County, according to a proposal released Wednesday by Gov. Tom Wolf. The funds, from the U.S. Department of Education, were awarded based on the state Department of Education’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund application submitted last week. “Our schools and educators have been working tirelessly to help students and their families during this crisis,” said Wolf. “These efforts must be paired with investments that reflect the unprecedented scale of this challenge. USDE’s approval of Pennsylvania’s
application is an important first step in securing those investments.” According to the proposal, Bradford Area School District would receive $974,704; Kane would receive $311,019; Otto-Eldred, $135,083; Smethport, $252,772; and Port Allegany, $282,508. Districts must apply to the department of education to receive the allocation, and can expect to start seeing the funds within the next several weeks, according to Wolf’s office. Cameron County School District is proposed to receive $159,825. In Elk County, Johnsonburg would receive $120,090; Ridgway, $148,757; and St. Marys, $253,007. In Potter County, Austin would receive $36,901; Coudersport, $168,990; Galeton, $106,684; Northern Potter, $281,950; and Oswayo Valley, $113,462. Under the federal Coronavirus Aid,
Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, at least 90 percent, or $471 million, of the funds will flow through to traditional public schools and charter schools. Each entity will receive an amount proportional to federal Title I-A funds received in 2019 under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The funding may be used for a wide range of purposes, including food service, professional training, technology purchases, sanitization and cleaning supplies, summer and afterschool programs, and mental health supports. Funds must be used by September 2022. PDE is urging school entities to prioritize investments for vulnerable students and families, including those living in the deepest poverty, students with disabilities, English learners, migrant students, students experiencing homelessness, and children in foster care.
Kuhn reaches 1,000 mask goal
U.S. Navy veteran John Kuhn delivered masks to Quinn Aubrey’s in Duke Center. The masks are for members of Otto-Eldred’s Class of 2020.
By JOELLEN WANKEL Rixford resident John Kuhn, a U.S. Navy veteran who set a goal of providing 1,000 masks to local health care workers and area residents in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, has surpassed his initial goal. Kuhn, who is battling alcoholism and PostTraumatic Stress Disorder, set the mission for himself as a way to “honor the fallen by saving the living.” His first donation of masks occurred in early to mid-April, when he provided masks to different hospitals and
senior living facilities. He also dropped off masks at Quinn Aubrey’s in Duke Center to provide options for residents who were not capable of sewing their own or of obtaining the materials to do so. As of April 21, Kuhn had crafted and handed out 275 masks. On May 14, Kuhn made another trip to deliver masks to various locations. Those masks brought him over the 1,000 mark — to 1,015 masks made and packaged for delivery. Kuhn explained that mask 276 to mask 1,015 were made entirely from donated fabric from those who believe in his efforts.
The masks were donated to Chapel Ridge in Bradford for staff and residents and Quinn Aubrey’s will have some on hand for Otto-Eldred’s Class of 2020. Kuhn noted that, while he has reached his goal, this is not the end of his mask making endeavor. Kuhn shares his sober journey and struggles to deal with PTSD on his Facebook page, PTSD Recovery, Lost at Sea by John Kuhn. Kuhn explained the page is intended to be a destination for those who are looking for support or who wish to follow Kuhn’s journey to PTSD recovery.
